Phil Garner and MOY voting
I asked this question over at the alternate board, but will Phil Garner get much consideration for Manger of the Year? He only managed the 'Stros for a little less than half the season, but the turnaround they had under him was simply amazing.
Does he have a shot at the award?

I think he'll get some consideration, but I find it hard to make a case for him over Bobby Cox. Everyone knew the Astros had the talent to make a run, so Garner getting them to make it, while surprising, was somewhat expected. However, most everyone wrote the Braves off this year, and they ran away with the East. I think Garner did a great job, but I'd give it to Cox.

Cox did it over a full season, while Garner put together a hell of a 50-game run. If there were some way for them to share the award, I'd vote to do that, but I don't see giving Garner the award over Cox.

Uh, excuse me guys, but shouldn't Tony LaRussa be the favorite?
And no, I don't think Garner should be a legitimate candidate due to his short term.

Id say so...everywhere i red pre-season had the cardinals not even making the playoffs, let alone finsihing in the top two in the division. Id say they have done a bit better then that...the braves were in the same boat, but the cards have done much better. I could see the stros except they were supposed to be in the playoffs...just making it is a dissapointment for them in m mind

It'll be hard to vote for LaRussa when the Cards lineup looks better than the Yankees' lineup, pitching or no pitching. The Braves made the playoffs with what most people considered to be a mediocre team with no starting pitching and huge question marks all over the lineup, having let go of Maddux, Sheffield, and Lopez.
As for Garner, he managed a few more than 50 games (more like 70-something, I think), but I'd have to look at the numbers before I decide that he was a large part of the reason they turned it around. He might be, but something about this smells an awful lot like the "Shannon Stewart for AL MVP" bandwagon everyone jumped on last year.

LaRussa has to be the favorite, in my opinion. The Cards weren't even supposed to sniff the playoffs, much less run away with their division. The hitters did what was expected of them in preseason, but it was the pitching that came through. Given that, I'd throw Dave Duncan a few MOY votes, if I could.
Bobby Cox certainly deserves consideration as well. Phil Garner did a great job since he took over, but IMO that has to limit the votes he can get. |

Well, I picked the Cardinals to win the Central. They were the best team before and during the season. The media gets caught up in one or two signings every year. LaRussa did a decent job, but anyone could have managed that squad to the division crown.
Meanwhile, the Astros lost Andy Pettitte and Wade Miller to season-long injuries then lost Adam Everett, starting SS, for the last half of the season. We were 44-44 under Williams and 48-26 under Garner. We made the playoff drive using minor league scrubs in our starting staff. Carlos Hernandez, Pete Munro, and Brandon Backe weren't supposed to start at all. That being said, I agree with the short stint argument. I would vote for Cox.

No MVP, No MOY, No Cy Young, that's fine, I think I speak for all Cardinal fans when I say that the only trophy we want is that one with all the nice gold pennants on it, and I would prefer they recieve it on either October 27th or 28th.

Yeah, LaRussa has done a great job, but I think he'll lose out because voters will percieve that he had so much talent, how could he not do such a great job (of course the SAME people picked the Cards to finish 3rd and out of the playoffs.. by a good margin).
