dola- another factor is that when the game is in the summer kids are out of school. Everyone 17 and under can watch all the games during the week. Who will be home to watch games during the work/ school week?

How is the situation in the USA any different from the rest of the world? No matter where the WC is held, there will be parts of the world where people will be at work, asleep or doing other stuff (like watching 4 NFL football games over one weekend). Besides, FIFA cosiders itself bigger than everything else in the world and won't be too concerned about losing viewers from the USA if they can win them back elsewhere. And they'll probably stay away from Super Sunday.
Now, whether sponsors feel the same way is a different story. I'd suspect that some of the big ones prefer 10M viewers from the USA over 20M random Eastern European and 20M African viewers.

Anyway, the key issue here is that the whole 'move to January' thing hasn't been part of the whole proces until after the tournament has been placed. That's where 100% of the soccer world will be influences and forced to change the normal schedules.

This.

40 million viewers who make 5 dollars a day don't mean shit to coke.

Six FIFA officials were prepared to sell their votes for up to $1.5m each to push through Qatar’s bid to host the 2022 World Cup, according to new revelations disclosed Tuesday.
Evidence presented to a British House of Commons’ inquiry reported claims of corruption behind Qatar’s surprise win in hosting the 2022 tournament, including a network of bribery that implicated senior FIFA officials.

Absolutely shocking

At the same time, this will be regarded by FIFA as political infringement with soccer stuff, which to FIFA is worth a suspension for that national team.
And then there's the FIFA preseidency election in a week or two and a half.

Probably the best move, not by fans by individual countries. If you can get a contingent of 20-30 of the biggest national teams stating they will boycott, FIFA would have no choice but to re-vote.

What I find puzzling about this is that only Blatter and the guy from Qatar are standing. Why does no one want the job?

UEFA is even worse - only Platini is offering himself.

I don't get it! So much power and no one wants it?

To this day, I mean, I get the 2018 World Cup. Maybe we don't all agree with it. Undoubtedly, Russia sent slightly larger bags of money than England to FIFA headquarters. But, I mean, everyone knows who Russia is- big place, (former) superpower, used in a lot of Bond films. It's really not that crazy.

But, Qatar?? This isn't the US beats the Soviet Union in 1980 upset. This is Jamaica beats the Soviet Union while fielding a team with only 4 players, one of which is John Candy

Isn't AC nearly impossible to work on that scale with little humidity? I'm most excited about 2014 and the possible fallout when Argentina wins.

Before we get too crazy, realize this is the architect saying it'd be "too expensive" to AC the stadiums. Qatar isn't exactly known as the most frugal of places.

Well, to be fair the Soviet Union would have trouble getting a puck through John Candy and into the net, there simply wouldn't be room.

From SI's Richard Deitsch:

Quote:
World Cup soccer fans: An update on the remarkable piece ESPN's E:60 did on Qatar:

The network was at its journalistic best last night with its report on migrant workers being brought in to build 2022 World Cup facilities -- and dying at awful rates. Last night the video was available on the website of the post-production team for the project, Bluefoot Productions.

Today Bluefoot has a note on it:

"We apologize, but due to ESPN affiliate sales contract rules, we are not allowed to post the feature online for three weeks. We will update you with any changes to the re-air schedule."

It's a short-sighted decision and I hope ESPN management makes an exception here to open up the video to the public on its social channels or Bluefront. People will still view the television re-airs but the piece deserves to get the widest possible run, and it's one that makes the network look very good. This is a moment where ESPN can use its usual over-the-top promotion for good.

Rules can be amended and I hope management reconsiders.

That's totally fair. I'm happy to admit that I'm prejudiced against old Swiss guys named Sepp Blatter. It may not be very 21st-century, of me, but frankly I'm just glad I got that off my chest.

According to Deadspin, no changes in WC hosts, despite findings of corruption all over.

Spoiler Alert: After FIFA Probe, Qatar Gets To Keep Its World Cup

Quote:
The summary of a year-long investigation into the bidding process for the next two World Cups will not be released until tomorrow, but the gist has already leaked via the English press. Basically: everyone involved was corrupt, but the 2018 and 2022 tournaments will not be taken away from Russia or Qatar.

Each time this thread is bumped, I put about a 0.01% chance on reading that the World Cup has been moved to another country. I know it's highly unlikely but it's still on the table
