Rampage lose in five

Erik Haula and Kirill Kabanov played geat hockey in the AHL playoffs for the San Antonio Rampage, but the Coyotes' affiliate still managed to lose their series to the Iowa Chops in five games. Haula score 8 points in 3 games while Kabanov scored 5 points. The lack of scoring support, accentuated by only three goals not scored by one of Haula, Kabanov or american rookie Jeremy Morin, was finally the killer for the Rampage.

CHL Memorial Cup tournament set

The London Knights beat the Ottawa 67's in 6 games to take the OHL Championship J. Ross Robertson Cup. Libor Hasek, the Knights' goaltender, as well as forwards Marcel Vézina and Alain Leinweber played a key role in the team's win, although they are not to be considered favourites for the Memorial Cup.

In the QMJHL, the Rimouski Oceanic made quick business of the Halifax Mooseheads by defeating them in four games. Belarussian goaltender Timofei Demkov had great playoffs, but it was really the play of diminutive grinding winger Tommy Wiart, who scored 18 goals in 24 games, that was the initiator for the Oceanic. Highly touted forward Doug St. Pierre, who should be a high pick in 2013, was also excellent in the playoffs.

Out west, the Seattle Thunderbirds defeated the Regina Pats in a long series that ended with a 5-2 win in the seventh game. Underager Craig Gingras and undrafted slovak Robert Svec were the main catalyzers for an underrated Thunderbirds team.

The three league champions will now face hosts Belleville in the four team tournament. The Bulls were OHL regular season champions but were upheld by the Sudbury Wolves in the second roudn. They feature a star-heavy lineup featuring goaltender Frantisek Havlicek, defensemen J.C. Cloutier and Emyle Holland and forwards Don Cormier, Bram Stevenson and Julian Dallaire.

Currie, the next phenom?

Mitch Currie, a 17 years old centre from North Delta, British Columbia, took the hockey world by surprise this year by coming into the CHL as a rookie and winning the Most Valuable Player trophy. The 5'10/154 centre scored 69 goals and 149 points with the Portland Winterhawks, even showing prowess on both sides of the ice. Currie is considered the top prospect eligible for the upcoming 2014 NHL Draft.

Sabres win lottery

June 14th 2013 - The Buffalo Sabres have won the NHL Draft lottery and will move up from their fifth place to pick first overall in the 2013 NHL Draft. The Detroit Red Wings, Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets and Philadelphia Flyers will complete the top 5. Remember that the Coyotes' first round pick was traded earlier in the year to the Dallas Stars, who will get to pick back-to-back at 23rd and 24th. The Coyotes' first selection will come at 46th overall with a pick previously acquired from Chicago, and they will select again at 54.
