Alright!

Should be a good shakeup in the CL with a few big names swapping teams inside the division.

Tuesday, April 16th, 2058: Venegas Holds Winged Lingerines Scoreless
Júlio Venegas of the Hartford Harpooners spun his magic on the Ann Arbor Winged Lingerines today. He blanked them 13-0 on 2 hits, registering 2 strikeouts and 4 walks.

"The bottom line was I just kept the ball down," Venegas said. "My breaking stuff was down. Everything was down."

Talking to reporters in the postgame interview, the Hartford skipper said, "We got solid pitching, good defense and we took great team at-bats in a lot of different situations. This was just a solid performance by everyone."

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2058: Colorado Hurler Captures 200th Victory
His goal at twenty was to win twenty games one year, pitch until he was thirty, win the league pennant and to make some money. Well, Vernon Woods did something even better -- the 34-year-old Colorado Rancheros star has now won 200 games in his career. That put him in a very select group of pitchers.

He joined that exclusive club today at Ballpark of Colorado by whipping the Hammersmith Hooligans 1-0, holding them to 6 hits in 8 innings while chalking up 9 strikeouts and no walks.

In the postgame interview, the modest Woods said, "It's special to win 200 games. You don't do it by yourself. You do it with good stuff and a good bullpen. You are only as good as the guys behind you. Years from now I might look back on it and give myself a little pat on the back."

The 34-year-old Woods has a career record of 200-149 and has fanned 2647 batters in 2949.2 innings with a 3.48 ERA.

Wednesday, May 1st, 2058: April's Starter of the Month Goes to Crowder
Curtis Crowder's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 4-1 in April, the 28-year-old Hyannis hurler has been named Republic League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 24 in 44 innings, logged an ERA of 2.45 and allowed opponents to hit .261 against him.

Wednesday, May 1st, 2058: Continental League Selects #1 Starter in April
Juan Jofre took a much-deserved turn in the spotlight earlier today as he accepted the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award for April.

The 26-year-old Cyclones starter is a relative newcomer to the league, but nonetheless racked up an impressive 4-0 won-lost record in 7 starts. He has fanned 28 batters in 39.2 innings and sports a 3.40 ERA.

Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 30-year-old William Snyder put together a solid offensive month for Ann Arbor and was crowned April's top batter in the Republic League.

Wednesday, May 1st, 2058: Tokyo's López CL #1 Batter in April
Eduardo López battered Continental League pitchers all April and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around Front Office Offseason League long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 32-year-old López told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I may not take the field and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 26 games, López hit .365 with 12 home runs, 36 RBIs and scored 19 runs.

Wednesday, May 1st, 2058: Republic League Names Rookie of Month
A boyish Rodrigo Ramos emerged as the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Hartford deserved the honor, batting .291 with 3 home runs and 9 RBI. Is the month of April a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Ramos enjoy the limelight.

Wednesday, May 1st, 2058: Big Month for CL Rookie
Roosevelt Veeck gets his bat on the ball fast. The 26-year-old rookie snapped out 32 hits and a .299 average to capture April's Continental League Rookie of the Month honors.

Last month the Baltimore right fielder piled up 3 home runs, 14 RBIs, scored 16 times and had 8 walks for a .370 on-base percentage.

Wednesday, May 15th, 2058: Wall Hittin' on All Cylinders
New York's Andrew Wall accomplished what few others have been able to do -- he hit for the cycle. In baseball, a player hits for the cycle when he hits a single, a double, a triple and a home run in the same game, though not necessarily in that order. Collecting the hits in that order is known as a "natural cycle."

For the day he finished 5-6 with 7 runs batted in and 3 runs scored and helped his Heroes knock off the Ann Arbor Winged Lingerines 26-6 at New York Grounds. In the postgame press conference he said, "I didn't even know I had hit for the cycle until after the game."

A. Wall struck out in the 2nd, hit a two-run single in the 2nd, hit a two-run triple in the 4th, hit a two-run double in the 5th, singled in the 7th and hit a solo-shot off A. Hossack in the 9th.

So far this year in 21 games Wall is hitting .312 with 3 home runs, 19 RBIs and 20 runs scored.

Sunday, May 19th, 2058: Wells Slams Milestone Homer
Hyannis's 14-4 victory over Chico was highlighted by Bernard Wells's 300th career home run. His teammates congratulated him at home plate after he circled the bases.

"I didn't see all of them out there," Wells said with a chuckle, "until I rounded third base." He added sheepishly: "It was only a home run. It's not like I won us a World Series!"

In 4 at-bats the Patriots left fielder collected 3 hits in his historic game, scored 2 runs, and had 3 RBI.

In his 2273-game career Wells is batting .295 with 558 doubles, 82 triples, 300 home runs and 1330 RBIs. He has stolen 365 bases and scored 1321 times.

Saturday, June 1st, 2058: Fontanez Nets RL #1 Pitcher Award
A 4-0 record with a 2.70 ERA is a pretty good month for most any pitcher. The Republic League thought it was worthy of an award and named Martín Fontanez, starter for the Hyannis Patriots, May's Pitcher of the Month.

He also held the opposition to a .258 average while posting 28 strikeouts in 40 innings.

Checking out his stats for the year, Fontanez has racked up 5 wins and 4 losses in 11 starts, 4.20 ERA and struck out 61 batters in 75 innings.

Saturday, June 1st, 2058:Evans Earns CL Top Pitcher Trophy
R.J. Evans has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in May and stole away with the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

The Pelicans bullpen ace collected 4 saves and 26 strikeouts in 25.2 innings, holding the opposition to a .194 average and posting a 1.75 ERA and a 6-1 record.

This year Evans has 6 saves with a 8-3 won-lost mark and 3.52 ERA.

Saturday, June 1st, 2058: Valéncia Picks Up Best CL Batter Honors for May
Boston third baseman José Valéncia certainly turned heads in May with some impressive numbers. He batted .456 for the month and was voted the Continental League Batter of the Month award.

He banged 7 home runs, collected 34 RBIs, scored 28 times and put up a .541 on-base percentage.

Currently Valéncia is hitting .376 and has collected 17 home runs, 60 RBIs and scored 48 times, while playing in 52 games.

Saturday, June 1st, 2058: RL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Rodrigo Ramos's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Hartford catcher has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In May he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .304 with 6 doubles, no triples and 1 home run. Ramos also scored 19 times and drove in 10 runs.

Presently Ramos is batting .298 with 4 home runs and 19 RBIs. He has played in 48 games and scored 31 times.

During the 2058 season Daggett has hit .286 with 1 home run and 20 RBIs. He has played in 50 games and scored 26 times.

Saturday, June 8th, 2058: 3-HR Binge for Melanson Against New York
Larry Melanson of the Winged Lingerines went on a hitting spree at Ann Arbor Grounds today and earned membership in the select club of hitters who have hit three home runs in a game. He blasted three into the stands in a 8-5 loss to the New York Heroes. Melanson got his name in the league record book, but failed to win the game.

The Ann Arbor center fielder had quite a game as he collected 4 hits in 4 at-bats, 4 RBIs and scored 3 runs.

His teammates were saddened by the loss, saying Melanson more than did his part, but they didn't do theirs.

After his three-home run game he said this to the press: "I'm not happy with the outcome of the game, but it was still a great game for me. I have been making solid contact lately, but not getting any lift. Today I got it up in the air and out of the ballpark. I had my home run swing down pat. Got some good pitches to hit, too."

L. Melanson singled in the 1st, hit a solo-shot off C. Pirvu in the 3rd, hit a solo-shot off C. Pirvu in the 5th, walked in the 7th and hit a two-run home run off R. Durante in the 9th.

Melanson's current batting average stands at .339 and he has chalked up 13 home runs and 37 RBIs.

Monday, July 1st, 2058: RL Selects Rookie of the Month
Despite his newness to the Republic League, last month Albert Hossack put up solid numbers and claimed the Rookie of the Month Award.

In June the Ann Arbor starter went 4-0, tossed 17.1 innings with 8 strikeouts and held the opposition to a .333 average.

If Hossack continues at this pace, he will certainly have a long and profitable Front Office Offseason League career.

In 2058 Hossack has posted a record of 5 wins and 2 losses with a 8.15 ERA. He has appeared in 25 games and struck out 37 in 59.2 innings.

Monday, July 1st, 2058: CL Names Rookie Star of the Month
The best Continental League rookie in June was Napa Valley's left fielder Gregory Daggett.

He hit .353 with 36 hits, 3 home runs, 17 RBIs, and 18 runs scored. He also walked 8 times on his way to a .405 OBP.

Thus far this season Daggett is hitting .310 with 4 home runs, 37 RBIs and 44 runs scored. He has 88 hits in 284 at-bats and has played in 76 games.

Wednesday, July 3rd, 2058: 2500 Hits for Betancourt
The day belonged to Francisco Betancourt of the Hyannis Patriots as he became the latest player to reach the 2500-hit plateau. He did it in Hyannis's 10-0 win over New York.

"It's a moment I'll never forget," said Betancourt after the game, "2500 hits is a lot. It puts you in a very select group. I never expected to be around long enough to reach a milestone like this."

He finished the day with 2 hits in 4 at-bats.

Lifetime Betancourt is hitting .312 with 2500 hits, 105 home runs, 1130 runs scored and 999 RBIs.

Tuesday, July 9th, 2058: FOOL News: The All-Star Game Rosters Have Been Announced
Nothing is for certain about the 2058 Front Office Offseason League All-Star Game. It may be dominated by top-notch pitching performances. Or it could turn into a home run derby. Who knows? Pitch by pitch, inning by inning, the game could feature a little of both -- six strikeouts in a row by a nasty southpaw -- or a 3-homer day for some superstar slugger -- plus great catches, thrills, chills and spills -- all the great and the unexpected things that can happen in a baseball game.

Ugh. I was hoping a 1-2 punch would be enough, but we just really don't have enough pieces this year I'm afraid.

Thursday, August 15th, 2058: Castro Spins Shutout
Juan Castro of the Ann Arbor Winged Lingerines was on top of his game today. He tantalized the Colorado Rancheros with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest and came away with a 5-0 shutout.

In the postgame comments, the Colorado skipper said, "He had the changeup working. You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The Ann Arbor hurler had 7 strikeouts, gave up 3 walks and surrendered 2 hits in his complete-game effort.

Castro told reporters after the game, "To be successful in this league, you have to keep the ball down. If you don't, they'll make you pay."

Up to now Castro has compiled an ERA of 6.72 with a 6-9 mark over 27 starts. He has 83 strikeouts in 135.1 innings and has held opponents to a .295 batting average.

Saturday, September 7th, 2058: Martínez Tags Number 300
There was a big sigh of relief by Carlos Martínez after he hit his 300th career homer. The Tokyo center fielder told BNN, "Whew. I'm glad it's over... now I can go back to just playing baseball."

It was quite a day for Martínez. He got his name in the league record books, 1 hit, 2 RBI, scored 1 run and his team, the Tokyo Cyclones beat the Halifax Winter Wolves 10-1.

Martínez knew it when he hit it. He raised his hands in the air, then ran the bases like a high school player clapping and grinning.

He told reporters in the post-game interview, "I was acting goofy running the bases... but it was my 300th home run."

"It was great," his manager said. "He stood there and watched it... we all did. You just felt it was coming... you just had a sense he would hit it soon... he has been having a lot of good at-bats. It was great to get it out of the way."

Martínez has played in 1727 games with a .291 career batting average and 1978 hits. He also has scored 1152 runs and driven in 1068 runs with 300 home runs.

Saturday, September 7th, 2058: López Powers 3 HR Against Halifax
Fans from Tokyo are still buzzing after Tokyo whipped the Winter Wolves 10-1 today at Sony Park. Eduardo López smashed three home runs in the game. This is a feat that few players ever achieve and few fans ever see.

In a tremendous performance the third baseman bashed out 4 hits in 5 at-bats, had 5 RBIs and scored 3 times.

At the postgame press conference, he was asked what it felt like to hit three home runs in one game. López answered, "To get one homer is special... two is great... three is just unbelievable!"

E. López hit a solo-shot off A. Medina in the 2nd, hit a solo-shot off A. Medina in the 3rd, hit an RBI single in the 4th, flied out in the 6th and hit a two-run home run off C. López in the 8th.

López is hitting .323 in 2058 with 47 home runs, 139 RBIs and 98 runs scored. He has 160 hits in 496 at-bats and played in 130 games.

Sunday, September 15th, 2058:Big Day for Hétu: Swats 6 Hits
It was magical day at the plate for the Pelicans Yann Hétu. The 27-year-old center fielder helped lift St. Petersburg to a 20-2 win over the Boston Settlers today at Legends Field. Hétu smacked 6 hits in 6 at-bats to spark his club to victory.

Y. Hétu hit an RBI single in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 2nd, doubled in the 4th, singled in the 5th, tripled in the 7th and hit a three-run home run off M. Suzuki in the 8th.

Thus far this year Hétu has hit .335 with 11 home runs and 73 RBIs.

Sunday, September 15th, 2058: St. Petersburg Hétu Gets the Cycle
"It's too bad I can't do that every day," Yann Hétu said with a smile to reporters after today's game. "It would do wonders for my batting average." Hétu had every right to be in a good mood after hitting for the cycle today against Boston at Legends Field. The Pelicans won the ballgame 20-2, he hit for the cycle, had a 6-for-6 game and boosted his batting average up a few points. The 27-year-old St. Petersburg center fielder chalked up 5 runs batted in and 4 runs scored for the game, too.

Who says you can't have it all?

He told the press that a triple is the tough hit to get in a cycle. "As soon as it left the bat, guys jumped off the bench and were rooting hard for me to have enough gas to get there," Hétu said. "It was hard to enjoy it... I was breathing too hard... you got to really be in shape to run out a triple."

Y. Hétu hit an RBI single in the 1st, hit an RBI single in the 2nd, doubled in the 4th, singled in the 5th, tripled in the 7th and hit a three-run home run off M. Suzuki in the 8th.

Hétu's current batting average stands at .335 and he has chalked up 11 home runs and 73 RBIs.
