Mariah Carey on New Years Eve

Did anybody catch Mariah Carey's train wreck of a performance on the Ryan Seacrest NYE's show? It was rather bizarre. It was clearly lip sync that she flat out gave up on. Bizarre.

That was terrible, but you saw her keep messing with her ear piece. I think it fell out and she could never recover... or maybe it was broken and never working.

Poor thing...having to sing for real songs she once knew by heart.

Holy crap. As a performer, there are few things that are more terrifying than a situation like that. Especially in a crowd that large, if her monitors weren't working, she would have had no idea where she was in the song, and lip synching would have been essentially impossible.

That sucks. Hasn't this happened before, where she had a horrible live performance on NYE or Christmas? I can't imagine trying to play when there's no way that you can hear your music or have any idea where you're at in the song.

Granted, I'm no performer, but you're telling me that a song she's probably sang in excess of 10,000 times, and she can't figure out where the hell she is in the song?

No, not if she was unable to hear the music.

This isn't like karaoke in your bedroom.

She can hear the music at 1:30 on that video. Maybe her mike was supposed to be live but lip syncing to the missing vocal track?

Yeah, the point is that when you're on a stage like that, in a crowd that large, without the monitors working you literally cannot hear what is happening. You are flying blind. The dancers were still on point, so I'm guessing it was a problem with her in-ear monitor, and everyone else's was working.

I think some may be missing that a monitor is an in ear audio device.
She wasn't trying to read lyrics of a screen like a karaoke bar.

When you play from a stage with all the speakers blasting away, it is literally seconds later before you hear the reverb. If you don't have your in ears you will sound like a babbling fool.

I'm more inclined to believe that she's just a fucking mess who was probably too out if it to figure out where she was.

Apparently she was so distraught she ended up jumping in the East River after the show.

She should have started lip synching the word watermelon. That makes it look like you are singing the words correctly.

This is an important distinction, thanks for the clarification. Totally slipped my mind that not everyone knows what an audio monitor is

I thought it was indicative of something that while perusing all of the 'major' networks on the very verge NYE of 2017 I was greeted by: Carson Daly, Mel B., Mariah Carey, Snoop Dogg, Queen Latifah, Tone Loc, Young MC, Biz Markie and Naughty By Nature. For one moment Pitbull came out and shouted some gibberish, but otherwise every other headlining act was more than 20 years past their prime. If it were only one outlet/channel it might make some sense, but why was every channel running some '90s nostalgia act out for NYE 2017?

Ding ding ding.

They aren't the only ones, but they are the available audience that advertisers are attracted to.

Well, aren't there a lot of surveys saying millennials don't have any sex, so they would certainly make up a disproportionate amount of adults staying home watching TV on New Year's Eve.

But I'm pretty sure the main takeaway (re: why there were past-prime acts in the first place) would be that a lot of whoever you would consider the hottest musical acts of 2016 are getting offered a lot more money to perform at some nightclub.

Also, without ascertaining any truth value to this story one way or another, this was a really entertaining read:

At least in the case of Carson Daly, he is somewhat current. He is the host of The Voice, which my wife DVRs.

Quite frankly I don't know why ABC as a production team doesn't cut out any variables by doing the sound work for all acts. That is, the artists shouldn't be allowed to do their own sound production. It should be uniform for everyone. "We have 5 musical acts, we'll set up the sound production for them so that the only thing we need to do is hand them their equipment, eq a bit on the mixing board and hit the 'on' button". It seems everyone has their own setup going and that introduces the potential for issues.

In my experience (notably much smaller venues than Times Square on New Year's Eve, but still) it is when a production company NOT affiliated with a major act handles the sound that things get shitty. If my band (and most any band I've ever run into) is running our own sound it is typically MILES better than what we get from the house sound guys.

This.

Besides you are talking about stars with custom molded monitors... they aren't using of the shelf equipment from musicians friend.

One also has to wonder if all the other voices in her head drown out what's coming through the monitor.

Everyone who performs at times square lip syncs these days. Witty MAYBE a hot mic sprinkle for commentary.

The sound distribution there is spread out over a half mile. It's a technical marvel to sync it at all. Much less to try and project that.
