Just happened to click on a news page that has a livestream. Must admit to getting goosebumps at the crowd going crazy at the window opening and a guy giving an anouncement (and now every new development).
There´s few more impressive sights than a packed St Peter's square at night ...

I´m very sceptical towards religion in general and the organisational aspect of it (no matter which of the big and small religious fractions), but i must admit that seeing this i understand the magnitude of it all. It is a big deal, plain and simple.

Jorge Mario Bergoglio is the new pope, 76 year old from Argentina. Will go by Francis, is the first to choose the name. Pretty conservative ...

From what I just read, it can be either. Sometimes regnal names are SoandSo I, sometimes they don't become I until there's a II.

That, and when some kind of compromise is needed to get a guy elected, it's probably a lot easier to have a shorter-term presence. People are going to be a lot less willing to settle on a pope they don't really want if he's going to be there for 40 years.

St. Francis was pretty awesome, as far as saints go. I don't know too much about saints or Catholicism, but he's always kind of stood out to me, the little I've heard about him. Though it seems like it'd be an ideal name for a younger, hipper pope.

I think this is a good selection. I mean, you were NEVER going to get a Pope who was going to be for gay marriage, c'mon. However, he seems to be very austere. He doesn't like living in luxury and would rather live in sparse accommodations and take the bus to work (as he did in Buenos Aries). He also is very big on social justice and against neo-liberal economics (so was Benedict XVI, but Francis is more so).

Also the St. Francis is known for having a vision from God telling him to "clean up my house" (paraphrasing). It appears this is what Pope Francis wants out of his Papacy.

When people say we need a younger Pope, maybe so, but John Paul II when he was elected in 1978 was the youngest Pope in 130 years. So it does occasionally happen, but even in earlier centuries it was common for Popes to be elders of the Church.
