Arrow The Brotherhood of Turducken Island

The Brotherhood of Turducken Island

"Get yer hands off me booty!"

WARNING: The Turn 13 Deadline has been posted (24 hour deadline)

Overview:

This is an interactive pirate dynasty. The object of the game is to accumulate gold, or perhaps more distinctly to retire with an accumulation of gold. The Brotherhood of Turducken Island keeps a log book as a ranking system of who among them has the most gold. As gold levels fluctuate, so do the rankings. Retiring locks your gold (and thus your place in the log) in place for perpetuity. Being dead locks you in hell for all eternity and your gold is lost.

The Brotherhood is limited to 20 active pirates. To start the game, slots in the log will be assigned to the first 20 applicants on a first-come, first-served basis, and to set the initial rank 20 gold will be given to the first applicant on down to 1 gold for the 20th applicant. There will then be a waiting list, if needs demand. Application consists of a post with this statement (inserting your chosen pirate name):

Quote:
“[Name] has come to Turducken Island to join The Brotherhood”

NOTE: If you don’t use this exact format, your application will be ignored. The Brotherhood is prickly that way. Simply posting “Count me in” or somesuch won’t cut it…that and a gold doubloon will buy you some grog. Current members of The Brotherhood are encouraged to mock, taunt, and otherwise lambaste any improperly worded applications.

Include your selected rating upgrade in the application post as well (see Ratings below to pick which one).

All pirates and their ships must be given a name. Names should be in the spirit of the game; funny and clever pirate names are encouraged, but don’t be overly crude or out of character. Do not just use your screen name. The GM (that’s me) will be the sole judge of whether a name is appropriate, and will ask a player to change the name as necessary. Please respect this rule. It’s a pirate dynasty, so role-play a pirate.

Each player is limited to one active pirate, with “active” being defined as neither dead nor retired. A player may retire his active pirate at any time, but the effect is permanent. He may then start up a new pirate and retain his place in The Brotherhood. However, if your pirate is killed you must go to the bottom of the waiting list if you want a new pirate.

Ratings

Ratings for this game are given in terms of dice. The worst rating is a d4 (a four-sided die), on up through d6, d8, d10, and the best, which is a d12. High rolls are always good.

Each pirate is rated in the following categories:

Cruising – Your pirate’s ability seek out other ships through navigation and sailing skill

Boarding - Your pirate’s ability to attack and capture ships at sea.

Raiding - Your pirate’s ability to plan and execute raids on ports.

Dueling - Your pirate’s individual fighting ability.

Trade - Your pirate’s buying and selling ability and market connections.

Intrigue =- Your pirate's ability to do sneaky things.

Ship - The quality of your ship (1/2 dr size = # holds)

Crew – The quality of your crew.

NOTE: As part of their pirate application, each player may select one rating they wish to upgrade.

Turns:
The game is turn-based. Hopefully, turns will be fairly frequent, but they will not be on a regular schedule. However, once a turn deadline is announced, the players must post their pirate’s actions within 24 hours (exactly) or they miss the turn and their pirate does nothing, except perhaps to fight a duel. If a player misses consecutive turns, the pirate is considered lost at sea and the player loses their place as an active member of The Brotherhood. Players may give notification in advance to cover absences (basically, the pirate can be put on cruise control), but the idea is to avoid deadbeat participants and keep the action lively.

Each turn, every pirate selects three actions they wish to undertake for that turn, in the order they wish to take them. Actions may be repeated in a turn.

Pirate actions are resolved with one more die rolls by the GM. All pirates start with a d4 for every action, but will gradually improve with bigger dice (d6, d8, etc.). Experience will improve ratings.

A pirate’s ship and crew are represented by dice as well. However, to reflect damage to the ship and losses to the crew, modifiers for these two ratings will only be negative. For example, a d6 ship can be damaged such that it is a d6(-2), which means that two is subtracted from the ship’s die roll result until the damage is repaired. These negative modifiers can be removed through the repair (for ships) and recruit (for crew) actions.

Actions:
Cruising
Raid a port (plan raid)
Dueling (challenge, accept challenge, buy off challenge, flee challenge)
Intrigue
Trade
Repair
Recruit
Recover Gold
Drunken Debauchery (buy off crew)
Wenching
Quest

Note: These are described in greater detail in the third post of this thread.

Turn reports:

Each pirate will be given results based on their actions in the Turn Report. This will follow a standardized format, as follows:

Pirate Name
Total gold
Total RP

Gold transfers, quests, actions, etc.

Pirate Ratings
Ship and Crew dice (with modifiers, if any)

As part of turn processing, each pirate has a 20% chance of a random event (10% chance good, 10% chance bad).

Additional Description

CRUISING!
Cruising represents the standard pirate “day at the office.” Go to sea, search out merchant ships, attack and board them, plunder the booty, and bring home the bacon. Typically, this is a less-hazardous source of income for one of The Brotherhood than raids, although the rewards are smaller as well.

Frequency = how hard target type is to find (Cruising dr – Frequency dr = ship found)
Defense = how strong the defenders are (Boarding/Ship/Crew dr vs. Defense/Defense/Defense dr)
Booty value = the potential value of the cargo (Booty dr x Trade dr = gold payoff)

Type of Cargo + frequency/defense/booty
• Ye Olde Treasure Ship d6/(d6 + 10)/(d10 x 100)
• Ye Olde Luxuries d10/d12/d12
• Ye Olde Trade Goods d8/d10/d10
• Ye Olde Resources d6/d8/d8
• Ye Olde Foodstuffs d4/d6/d6
• Ye Olde Guano d4/d4/d4

How it works:
1. Conduct a “Cruising for ______” action, filling in the blank with a targeted cargo type. Cargo types are rated for three things: frequency (how hard the ships are to find); defense (how strong the ships defend against boarding); booty value (the potential value in trade for gold).
2. The GM rolls for the pirate’s Cruising rating, and then rolls for ship frequency and subtracts that result from the Cruising roll. If the number is positive, a ship has been found! A zero or negative result means no ship was located.
3. If a ship was located, Boarding is then resolved as follows. Three distinct rolls are made for the pirate (Boarding rating, Ship rating, and Crew rating), and three distinct Defense rolls are made for the ship. The results are totaled, and if the pirate has a higher or tied total number, the defending ship is captured. If the defending ship’s combined roll is higher, it escapes. In either case, if the specific die rolls for Ship and Crew are higher for the defending ship, the pirate’s Ship and/or Crew takes one point of damage.
4. If the defending ship is captured, Booty value is then determined using the appropriate booty die roll. The booty then goes into the pirate ship’s hold. The holds a pirate ship has is equal to one-half of its rating (i.e., a d4 ship has two holds, a d6 three, etc.). If booty is taken but there are no more holds available, the lowest valued booty is pitched overboard. Booty remains in the ship’s hold until it is sold.
5. Occasionally, passengers may be taken for ransom; they are captured in addition to other booty. Also, occasionally a captured ship will be better than the pirate’s current ship, and will replace it. This is a fairly rare occurrence but will happen automatically…mama didn’t raise no dummy pirates.

RAID PORT!
As you will see, raiding ports is the way to rake in the big bucks. However, the price of failure can be high…and sometimes lethal.

How it works:
1. Conduct at least one “Plan a _____ Raid” action, filling in the blank with the level of port you wish to raid. It is highly advisable that you plan the raid at least a turn in advance, so that you can see how well your plan comes together and decide whether you want to proceed with the raid. How good your plan comes together is determined by a Raiding die roll by the GM, and is reported in the turn report. The higher the roll the better the plan. You are never required to proceed with a raid plan, and can plan as many times as you want prior to actually raiding the port. The only exception to this is if you plan and then raid the port in the same turn.
2. Conduct a “_____ Raid” action, filling in the blank with the level of port you wish to raid. You will automatically use the best plan you’ve got, and all other lesser plans for that level of port that you might have made are lost.
3. The GM processes the raid for the turn report. The pirate’s raid value is determined by adding four results: (Raid Plan) + (“Raiding” dr) + (“Ship” dr) + (“Crew” dr). The port’s raid defense value is determined by rolling four of the appropriate dice, based on the port’s strength. Pirate ship and crew losses may be taken due to these rolls. For the raid to succeed, the pirate’s combined roll must be greater than or equal to the port’s combined defense roll. If the raid succeeds, the difference of these rolls also determines the amount of gold plundered. If the raid fails, the pirate will likely be wounded, captured, or killed.
4. Plunder dice are rolled based on the strength of the port and the raid roll difference from step 3. Cargo is also plundered, dependent upon the port’s strength. A citadel yields luxuries, a fortress trade goods, a harbor city resources, a coastal town foodstuffs, and a fishing village guano. Captives for ransom may also be taken.

• Ye Olde Citadel (d12)
• Ye Olde Fortress (d10)
• Ye Olde Harbor City (d8)
• Ye Olde Coastal Town (d6)
• Ye Olde Fishing Village (d4)

Note (beginning with turn 12): Raid plans may randomly expire if not used immediately (during the next turn). Each turn thereafter, I will roll a d10, and if the number is greater than the level of the plan, it expires.

Duels!
Tired of that haughty bastard and all of his gold sitting topside of the Log Book? Feeling a little bloodthirsty? Or just wake up on the wrong side of the hammock? Call one of your Brethren out.

How it works:
1. Dueling is a two-turn process. Start with “Challenge ______” action on the initial turn, filling in the blank with the name of the pirate you wish to duel.
2. If challenged, in the next turn the pirate must take one of the following actions: (a) “Accept Challenge,” in which case a duel ensues that turn; (b) “Buy Off Challenger” (negotiations should take place via PM or e-mail, and anything goes); it’s up to the challenger to withdraw the challenge (which is a free extra action), and the challenger cannot challenge that same pirate again, except in the case of a random event or quest result; (c) flee the challenge; in this case the GM compares the two pirates’ RP+d10, and if the fleeing pirate rolls higher, then he has successfully dodged the duel and nothing further comes of it; if the roll is equal, the Brotherhood requires that in the interest of honor a duel must be fought; and if the fleeing pirate rolls lower, then his crew turns on him in disgust, and he walks the plank for a permanent vacation in Davey Jones’ Locker.
3. Once a duel is to take place, the GM rolls for each pirate’s duel rating; the difference is the number of turns wounded (out of action) for the loser; if the winner’s roll is double or more, the loser is killed.
4. Be on the lookout for spiffy weapons which can boost your dueling prowess
5. Challenges may not be issued against a pirate under the effects of Drunken Debauchery (see below).

Intrigue!

> All pirates have been given an additional rating for Intrigue (d4). This may be increased like any other rating. It is used to determine the relative success of any intrigue actions. Be advised that a d4 is weak when it comes to intrigue, so don't expect James Bond.
> You may take the following Intrigue actions based on the intrigue rating: Steal x (must be a specific target, such as gold, items, etc.), Spy on x (learns information - you may target other pirates, trade ships, ports, etc.), Seek X's Buried Gold , Guard (acts as a counter to any intrigue against you, duration is an Intrigue dr). If you wish to not reveal your Intrigue activities, simply post "Intrigue" as your action and PM the specifics to me.
> Intrigue actions are inherently dangerous, and may result in wounds or even death. Also, if your pirate botches an intrigue roll while working against another pirate, the target pirate is entitled to a free challenge at their option.

Trade!
What the hell are you going to do with two holds worth of bird poop? Sell them, of course. The Trade action is the way to turn cargo into gold, as well as captives into ransom gold. You will get an offer for each cargo or captive, and you can either accept or reject it on the subsequent turn.

How it works:
1. Take a Trade action. You will get offers for all of your cargo and captives in the turn report, based on the cargo value and your trade rating. You may also buy whatever is for sale on Turducken Island or from other pirates with this action. You may make trade offers conditional (i.e., "automatically accept 10g or higher").
2. If you refuse an offer, the cargo remains in your hold until you take another Trade action or otherwise dispose of it.
3. Generally, it is best to accept whatever ransom payment you are offered, unless you are lucky enough to land somebody famous as a captive. Then you can hold out for more.

Repair!
This is the means to repair your ship. The better your ship, the more expensive it is to repair. Each Repair action repairs one point of damage.

How it works:
1. Take one Repair action for each point of damage you wish to repair. Cost is based on the quality of the ship; a d4 ship costs 5g per point to repair, d6 (10g), d8 (20g), d10 (30g), d12 (50g)
2. You can buy a new ship, if available (any available ships will be listed in the turn report), with a Trade action.

Recruit!
This is the means to replace your lost crew, as well as to upgrade to a higher quality level. The better your crew, the more expensive they are to replace. Each Recruit action replaces one point of lost crew, OR upgrades your crew to a higher level.

How it works:
1. Take one Recruit action for each point of crew you wish to replace, or to upgrade your entire crew quality level (if available)
2. Replacement cost is based on quality; a d4 crew is a mere 1g per point to replace, d6 (5g), d8 (10g), d10 (20g), d12 (50g).
3. Occasionally, full crews will offer their services on Turducken Island. Being the greedy buccaneers that they are, they will join the pirate who offers them the most gold to sign on. Basically, it’s an open bid process that ends with the turn deadline. Take a Recruit action and list your gold offer. If you end up being the pirate who offered the most gold, you get that crew. Ties are broken with an RP+d10 roll.

Drunken Debauchery!
Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate’s life for me. What, you think it’s all fun and games for the pirate captain? The rank and file need some entertainment every now and then, too. And they take it pretty much when they want it.

How it works:
1. Drunken Debauchery is a mandatory action. The first one comes at random, but after that and each additional one the GM makes a Crew die roll to determine how many turns until the next one.
2. A Drunken Debauchery Action actually lasts anywhere from 1-4 actions (a d4 roll) in duration.
3. You may take this action at any point of the turn you wish, but some or all subsequent actions for that turn and the next may be lost due to the hangover.
4. You may prevent a Drunken Debauchery by buying off your crew with gold. This requires an action, and you pay an amount equal to a Crew die roll. You may only do this once per Drunken Debauchery.

Wenching!
Satisfying your crew’s lust is a way to improve their morale as well as put off their urge to get drunk. It’ll cost you, though, and as with most things involving women, it’s never a sure thing.

How it works:

1. Take a Wenching action, committing as much or as little gold to the action as you wish (minimum 1g).
2. The GM sets the “wench level” by rolling percentage dice, obtaining a number 1-100. A low result equates to slutty tavern maids, a high roll means seriously hard-to-get hotties. The dice are then rolled again to obtain the pirate’s wenching result, adding to that roll the amount of committed gold used to seduce the wenches as well as a Crew rating roll.
3. If the pirate’s final wenching result is higher than the wench level, the crew scores. The next Drunken Debauchery is ignored, and the crew receives a +1 modifier for all actions taken through the end of the next turn. If the result is lower, well, it’s okay…it happens to every guy.

Recover Gold
1. Gold may be buried by a pirate at any time as a free action. This prevents it from being taken or lost in bad ways. However, buried gold cannot be spent unless it is dug up.
2. You dig up buried gold using a "Recover Gold" action, simply stating how much of your buried gold you want recovered.

Quest!
• There are two types of quests: posted quests and individual quests
• Posted quests are open to any and every pirate of the Brotherhood; any available posted quests are listed with the turn report
• Individual quests are offered to a specific pirate as a random event, or as the result of another action.
• The successful completion of either type of quest will result in good stuff (gold, booty, special items, better ratings/crew/ship, etc.)

Question

Rule Changes (effective Turn 11)

Reputation Points (RP) have replaced the pirate’s Harrrrr! rating. Therefore, RP represent another form of ranking among The Brethren, and any tie-breaker situations using reputation would use this number with a random element added in, such as (RP+d10).

Accumulating reputation points will also be the means to improve ratings (or “level up”). Each level will allow the pirate to select a rating to increase (note: ship & crew may not be leveled up in this manner). The levels are 25 RP, 50 RP, 100 RP, 200 RP, and so on upward, doubling the previous number. Pirates who have already attained a level or two may select their improved rating(s) immediately.

RP are earned as follows:

Each unit of gold earned [0.1]

Ships captured (each):
Guano [1]
Food [5]
Resources [10]
Trade goods [20]
Luxuries [30]
Treasure [40]

Successful raids (each):
Fishing village [5]
Coastal town [10]
Harbor city [20]
Fortress [40]
Citadel [50]

Hostage [value #]

Dueling victory [opponent’s RP/10]

Navy ship defeated [variable]

Quests completed [variable]

*A note about Masters and Minions: Masters get full reputation points, and minions half points

**A note about gold: Gold received from other pirates does not count toward reputation! Be aware that this has a significant bearing on Master/Minion relationships.

***A note about cargo: Reputation points are not directly awarded for cargo, but for the gold earned when the cargo is sold off.

****A note about hostages: Due to the notoriety one gains from word-of-mouth, hostages provide reputation points both directly and indirectly (ransom gold).

• The length between Drunken Debaucheries will no longer be tied to reputation. Also, I’m going to add the ability to “buy off” the crew and postpone the next drunk (gold cost = die roll of crew level). Buying off the crew is an action.
• Cargoes will no longer be listed with a (g), which is confusing. They will instead be listed with a (t) to indicate that their value will be multiplied by a trade roll to determine their final worth. Example: [3t guano] Likewise, hostages will be listed with an (h) since ransom values are not tied to trade ratings. Example: [8h hostage].
• I like the random events and will increase their frequency up to 20% chance per pirate per turn. Basically, if the d10 roll is a “1” than it’ll be a negative event, and if it’s a “10” it’ll be a positive one.
• Pirates who are “lost at sea” will no longer be permanently lost unless there is a pirate on the waiting list. However, bad things will tend to happen to pirates who miss consecutive turns.
• Outside of standard trade and ransom actions, a challenged pirate’s assets are frozen until the challenge is resolved, and may not be “stashed” with another pirate.
• NEW ACTION: “Recover Gold.” Gold is considered to always be with a pirate physically unless it is buried. A pirate may bury any portion of their gold whenever they wish as a free action, but retrieving any buried gold requires a separate “Recover Gold” action.

Intrigue

Q & A Section

Feel free to post any questions about the game. The questions and their answers will be listed here. Please delete your question posts once they are answered so that the thread doesn't get too clogged up.

Question:
Quote:
How do recruits work and is it random how good they are, or does your reputation help that? Or are all recruits/crew the same upon recruitment?
Answer:
Your current crew can always replace losses using one or more Recruit actions and the appropriate gold cost (based on the crew's quality level).

Better full crews can be recruited, and go to the highest bidder. Ties are broken with a HARRRRR! roll. The availability of such crews is random but fairly frequent. After all...Turducken Island is a hopping spot for pirate crews.
= = = = =

Question:
Quote:
Be we putting these orders away from prying eyes or hoist them with ol' Skull and Bones for the rest o' the Brotherhood to see?
Answer:
Hoist 'em up th' mast for all yer Brethren to see! If ye wish to bluff, make use o' th' "edit" button, but only up until the turn deadline. Any edits or orders submitted after the deadline are null and void, and yer hungover pirate piddles in his pants for all three actions.
= = = = =

Question:
Quote:
Can a pirate sell one o' 'is port raidin' plans to another of The Brotherhood with a Trade action?
Answer:
Pirate to pirate trade of all kinds can occur, and no action is needed. I'll just need an affirmation from both parties that a deal has been reached; be sure to state item(s) and price(s).
= = = = =

Question:
Quote:
Can a pirate contract with another couple o' cap'ns to take down such a worthy vessel and split the spoils? If yer answer be 'aye', then tell us how it would werk! Then I pose the same question for raids.
Answer:
Aye, indeed. Pirates may undertake combined Cruise or Raid actions, and combine their efforts (die rolls) against the defending ship or port. Crews and ships of all involved pirates can take losses or damage.

To enable this, both pirates must affirm their intention to work together, naming the other pirate, and must do so for each action as well as on the same action (1-2-3) for that turn, as follows. One pirate becomes the Master and any other pirates cooperating must becomes a Minion for that action or actions. The Master is the one who controls the Minion's action(s). It's a matter of trust, ye see.

Example:

Bloody Barry
1. Cruise Treasure Ship (master of Blackbeard = Cruise Treasure Ship)
2. Trade (master of Blackbeard = Cruise Treasure Ship)

Blackbeard
1. Minion of Bloody Barry
2. Minion of Bloody Barry

Note that in the above example, the first action is a combined effort, and the second action is a betrayal that leaves Blackbeard facing any located treasure ship alone!

= = = = =

Question:
Quote:
As part of a raid/cruise with multiple ships, may ye designate which of the ships receives the cargo or is it always the Master? Of that same ilk, if booty overflows one of the holds, does it de-fault to the minion ship's hold because it be a waste to see it go to Davey Jones' locker and pirates don't strike me as folk who let red tape like that get in the way of booty.
Answer:
Cargo goes to the Master, bumping any lesser-valued cargo (as needed) to the Minion. The two ships are working together in all respects, but because of the nature of the relationship for that action, the Master always takes the pick of the litter. The Master can always pay off the Minion with gold to balance things out. That's a free action, by the way.
= = = = =

Question:
Quote:
If you have plans for a raid, how long are they good fer?
Answer:
Until you use them (or any other plan) for that same type of port.
= = = = =

Question:
Quote:
Can you accept a trade offer blind (ie look for an offer and accept it all in one trade action)?
Answer:
Aye. Just note that with the TRADE action.
