Have any of you spent any time in Fayetteville, North Carolina? I may be headed there this season and am wondering what to expect. Any insight is appreciated.

It's called FayetteNam for a reason. Military, military, and more military and all the benefits and troubles that usually come with it. (I still find great irony in the fact that one of America's greatest and most important military bases is named for one of the worst generals the Civil War ever produced.)

Stick to the base and you're fine. I wouldn't wander around anyplace else.

Second what Wolfpack and gstelmack said. I didn't live there myself but growing up in central NC I had the same impression of Fayetteville as they do it appeas.

I had the choice of going to Bragg or Drum before heading to Bliss. From what I heard from my neighbors, drugs and gangs are a pretty big problem there because of the two main interstates that run nearby.

I was stationed there for 4 years. Do not, under any circumstances, go to any of the bars after sundown, unless your real name is Chuck Norris. If you want some good nightlife, you need to go to Raleigh or someplace.
Definitely bring your golf clubs. |

Well I'm not military so I wouldn't go near the base. I'd be going to broadcast for their summer league team. Sounds like a rough town.

My brother lives in Fayetteville. He's a green beret, so he does OK there.
My impression of the town was that it was a total armpit. I spent a few days there about a year and a half ago, and I was glad to leave. The Special Forces Museum is kind of neat. I guess if you're on base, it's OK. |

It is the roughest place I've ever been, and I've been in countries that were engulfed in civil war. It may not be so bad now, with all the deployments. Also at one point it had the highest rate of gonorhea of any similiar sized city in America. So, wear a raincoat. |

You will enjoy it if you like tattoos and $6 (or however much they are now) hair (buzz) cuts. Also, probably not the best place for meeting ladies (if you are single).

Been there plenty of times and there are plently of ladies. You just have to know which Trailer Parks they are in.
No, seriously it's like any other Army base I was stationed at: Strip Bars Pawn Shops Car Dealerships (where if you have an LES then you have a car) Check Cashing places Liquor stores It's not that rough. Just a lot of testosterone floating around.
