Meh. Most people do not even know what a griffin is. Now we can spend the rest of our lives explaining why our mascot looks like the result of some genetic engineering experiment gone horribly wrong.

I would argue he just looks like an eagle. The legs clearly to make the suit more possible. There's not much evidence of Lion there. I guess the tail.

I repeat: ugh.

Too bad the wing looks like a really bad case of armpit hair.

First thing I thought of when I saw the logo was the Racine Case High School Eagles.

Then, again, the UNLV Rebels' logo looks like a lot like the Racine Horlick High School Rebels, who are also scarlet and grey in their colors.

I was there.

The strange thing was, before they announced the griffin, they made several "fake" announcements about other possibilities. Then, when they announced the griffin, everyone assumed that it was just another deke. Not until several minutes had passed did people realize that, in fact, they were serious about the griffin.

Ehhh....I actually loved the idea of a King and Queen mascot roaming the sidelines. Would have been something no one else had. The Griffin isn't bad since it's unique. The pug would have been an awesome WTF.

And fuck the NCAA's moronic policy on this. Your old logo kicked ass.

Yeah- I wish you had kept the old one. But, still, I think you could do a lot worse. It's definitely unique but not too crazy or just downright dumb.

Rumor has it that the new mascot had to be a bird of some sort so that W&M could try to get the feathers back. Not sure if there is anything to that rumor, but I wouldn't be surprised.

It actually could be worse. You could have had a name change like Marquette did for around 48 hours when they changed it to Gold.

Are the official colors green and gold/yellow (or whatever their specific names are) only, or is brown in there too? I don't like the brown/tan legs on the mascot (I know it is half lion, but it is a fictional creature mascot) -- otherwise, it isn't too bad.

For some reason, I really laughed at this. I mean, I love The Daily Show, but c'mon, "Out most famous alumnus is one of the founding fathers and the 3rd President of the United States. Second most well known is a guy who hosts a comedy news program where 'the show that leads into {him} is puppets making crank phone calls'

SI

Well, we'd look cocky if we listed ALL of the founding fathers/presidents that graduated from W&M...

That's magnanimous of you

Speaking of which, we need to head down to Williamsburg at least one more time since we have a season pass. I'll need to PM you before that

Green and gold are the colors.

LS,

Meant to point out that my "meh" earlier in this thread was directed at the mascot, not at your comment.

Any bets as to whether the Griffin lasts longer than Colonel Ebirt?

I think there was too much hoopla for it not to be.

Yeah - it'll stick around for awhile I think.

The question is - will the student body/alumni embrace it? That I'm a lot more doubtful of.

However, if, as hinted, they work the feathers back into the logo, people may be won over.
