No Barbering Allowed!

Weirdest story I've read in awhile.

http://www.press-citizen.com/apps/pb...506100308/1079

Quote:
A makeshift barbershop of sorts started two to three years ago by firefighters at Iowa City's downtown fire station is no more.

In the May 2 edition of the Press-Citizen, firefighters were photographed having their hair cut in the weekly "Rituals" feature. The feature showcased "Buckman's Barbershop," a makeshift barbershop in the hose shop at Iowa City Fire Station 1, 410 E. Washington St.

The barbershop was started by firefighter Chris Buckman, who would sometimes cut fellow firefighter's hair during the crew's down time and when the day's work was done. Buckman quit cutting hair after moving to another shift but firefighters continued the practice.

The feature triggered a May 17 letter to the editor criticizing city manager Steve Atkins and fire chief Andy Rocca for condoning "barbering on duty." The letter also stated that the firefighters were "taking away a livelihood from professionals who are trying to make a living."

The Press-Citizen also received letters of support for the barbershop.

Iowa City Fire Capt. Larry Kahler, who was one of the firefighters photographed in the May 2 article, said Thursday that the makeshift barbershop practice has been ordered stopped.

He deferred further comment to Rocca, who declined to say what action he took or whether any firefighters were reprimanded because of the barbershop.

"I handled it internally as a personnel matter," Rocca said. "It's a closed matter for the department and there's nothing for me to add to it at this point."

Atkins said he was aware of the fire station barbershop and the letters to the editor that followed, but he said he did not know what action Rocca took.

"I told him, 'You do whatever you think is best' and that was the end of the conversation," Atkins said.

Honestly, who gets upset with someone giving someone else a haircut? I shave my head. I guess I'm supposed to go to a barber every day and let him do it?

My dad was a firehouse barber. He is probably rolling over in his grave.

If you are failing to make a living as a barber because the firefighters are doing a better job than you...time to find a new way to make a living.

Another thing on that, is there is a profession that is threatened by firefighters, it is painters. I would say over half the firefighters my dad worked with painted houses on the side (because of the 24 on/48 off thing gave them plenty of time for a second job). They also spent many hours painting hydrants during the year (which I bet they don't do in strong union areas).

They are now getting into real estate en masse.

(Now there's a "profession" that desperately needs to be run out of business)

The barbers should get back at firefighters by going to a burning building and using their little hair spritzers to put it out.

So that's what it feels like to have Pepsi come out of your nose. Thanks RA.

I second the motion. Let's move the proposal to the floor for a vote. All in favor say "aye"...

I never thought that by shaving my own head I was taking away the livelyhood of professional barbers... Wow. And to think, I cook for myself too!
