Anyone make Home Brew?
Thinking about getting a home brew kit, and wondered if anyone had any suggestions.

My girlfriends dad did. He loves it and is making more, just don't make light colored beer and stick it in an old apple juice container, especially if you have a 10 year old that loves apple juice.

I used to and I loved it. If you get a kit DON'T get Mr. Beer, it is crap. Look in the yellow pages for a shop that sells home brew kits and spend the extra money on the real kit. I think I spent about 80 dollars on my first kit. Me and my girlfriend at the time had a great time brewing and bottling our first batch, it is really fun to involve someone else.
My first batch turned out well and then I got more into it and started brewing diffrent flavors ( my favorite was a cranberry porter we gave to people at XMAS time) Over time I became good at it. Since we split up I haven't brewed a batch, but mabye I will take it up again. BTW, Another advantage of buying your equipment from a local home brew shop is they usually can give you advice. |

It's been about three years but I have brewed in the past. I second Lathum's advice Mr. Beer is bad. Get the good kit. Be patient. If one batch doesn't turn out well, keep at it. Practice makes perfect. I suggest buying the book The Joy of Home Brewing. The author's name escapes me at this point, but it is very helpful if you are just starting out or a veteran at home brewing. Beside that, it is a surprisingly entertaining read. The best I ever made was a stout brewed with baker's chocolate. It was very potent and had a rich flavor but more crispness than Guinness. My friends loved it. I don't know if I will ever be able to copy it. Maybe this thread will motivate me to get the gear back out and start up again.
Good luck and have fun. |

Thanks. I'll avoid Mr. Beer and report back if and when I venture into the actual brewing.
