HDD Question

I've got a HDD that is preventing my computer from going through POST. I hear a clicking coming out of the drive. Is it completely hosed? Anyone know how expensive HDD recovery services are?

Yeah, clicking is bad. Probably dead, but I'm still surprised that the BIOS doesn't detect it. I don't know for sure, but I think the professional data recovery services will run in the thousands of dollars. If the BIOS knew it was there you could try various software recovery programs, but that obviously will do you no good.

For future reference, I use a program called HDD Health to monitor my drives. It basically interprets the SMART information from drives and gives a percentage rating of drive "health". Easy to use, and could be useful as an early warning system. Right now I have two drives at 100% but one is at 63%. I am watching for that number to get lower and then time for a new drive. And more importantly, moving the data off the bad one.

I would hook it up to another system via USB/ESATA and see if the files are still there. Pull those files off and buy a new hard drive before it completely dies.

Has anyone tried freezing a failed HD, and did it allow you to get your data off of it?

I've never tried it, but I do know people who have successfully pulled data off a drive by doing that.

Data recovery services are ridiculously expensive.
