OOTP 18 - A new vision of baseball

Forget everything that you knew of baseball from 1969 on. Everything has been revamped and all records have been erased.

Starting in 1969 all players are free agents. Each team can sign any player they are able to. Rosters have been cut down to 18 players per team. League size is 16 teams; with 10 different levels of leagues.

Each season consists of 30 games (one home and away versus each of the other 15 teams in the league).

Only 2 games per week, so every game will be the best players and pitchers versus the best players and pitchers.

Promotion/relegation is used with 2 teams being promoted/relegated. Relegation is easy, the bottom two teams. Promotion will be the regular season winner and the post season playoff winner (which will be the teams ranked 2 through 5 in the regular season; one game per round).

I plan on adding foreign leagues as I get a better feel for the league setup and would like to setup a "champions" league style tournament.

April 1969 - Recap

MLB
The Orioles and Mets have risen to the top so far as each team has won 7 of their 8 games and sit at the top of the standings.

The Yankees started the season losing 2 of their first three as the lost at home to the Giants and on the road to the Phillies but they have won their last 5 games to lead to a 6-2 record, including an 11-2 victory at Baltimore giving the Orioles their only loss of the season.

The A's, Tigers and Twins are all in the hunt for the playoff race as they all sit at 5-3.

On the other end of the spectrum. The Angels are at the bottom with a 1-7 record and are in the relegation zone. The Angels did win their last game, after starting 0-7, as they blanked the Cardinals 5-0.

Just ahead of them are the White Sox and the Red Sox, both sitting at 2-6.

The current breakout star has been first baseman Bob Robertson of the Orioles. He leads the league in hitting (.556), slugging (1.028), WAR (1.3), hits (20), home runs (4), RBI (13) and runs scored (17).

The Orioles have a frightening offense as they also have Bobby Bonds (.485 avg, .818 slg, 0.9 WAR, 16 hits, 3 HR, 9 RBI, 11 R, 2 SB) and Johnny Bench (.848 slg, 1.0 WAR, 15 H, 4 2B, 3 HR, 12 RBI, 9 R).

As a team the Orioles lead the league with a team average of .327 (2nd is .288), OBP of .431 (2nd is .373), slugging of .559 (2nd is .471), hits with 92 (2nd is 81), doubles with 18 (2nd is 14), home runs with 15 (2nd is 11), walks with 51 (2nd is 41) and runs with 68 (2nd is 48).

The Mets have been winning with their pitching, they are the polar opposite of the Orioles. The Mets lead the league in ERA (1.70), opponents average (.202), opponents slugging (.285) and have allowed the fewest home runs (4).

IL
The Toledo Mud Hens have started very strong and lead the league with a 7-0 record as they sit in the league champion's position which would earn them automatic promotion.

Just behind them are the Houston Astros and Pittsburgh Pirates (both 6-1) as they are currently the top two seeds for the playoffs with a three way race for the next two positions with the Washington Senators, Cleveland Indians and Montreal Expos all sitting at 5-2.

At the bottom of the standings are the Rochester Red Wings (0-7). Just above them are the Richmond Braves and Syracuse Chiefs (both 1-6).

Offense has been winning it for the top three as Toledo is hitting .367 as a team, Houston .344 and Pittsburgh .360. They have also been scoring over 10 runs per game at 81, 81 and 72 total runs. Pittsburgh may be the team to be feared the most as they have also been getting great pitching as they have a team ERA of 1.14 as Phil Niekro has been leading the way for them (3-0, 0.64).

May 1969 - Preview

MLB
5/4 - The Yankees (6-2) host the Mets (7-1) as the Mets will have Jim Bunning (3-0, 1.48) going against Mike G Marshall (3-1, 3.90).

5/7 - The A's (5-3) travel to New York to face the Mets (7-1). Oakland has Tom Walker (1-1, 2.40) going against Denny LeMaster (3-1, 2.17) in a matchup between teams in playoff contention presently.

5/7 - The Angels travel to Boston to face the Red Sox. Each team needs a win to try to get out of relegation zone.

5/11 - The Orioles take their intimidating offense to Detroit in a key game for the Tigers and their playoff chances.

5/14 - The Yankees travel to Boston to face the Red Sox. The Red Sox tentatively have Bill Champion (0-5, 10.22) on the mound if he is still a viable option by then. With the Red Sox on the verge of relegation this could be one of the last Red Sox/Yankees matchups for a while.

IL
5/2 - The Senators (5-2) host the Astros (6-1).

5/2 - Big time match as the Toledo Mud Hens put their unbeaten record on the line as they travel to Pittsburgh to play the Pirates. The Pirates just lost their first game of the season to the Expos after starting out 6-0. The Pirates have already had wins this season with scores of 14-2, 18-1, 16-0 and 16-1 prompting suggestions of a mercy rule.

5/9 - Another test for Toledo as the face the Montreal Expos.

5/9 - The Royals host the Indians, two playoff potential teams.

5/9 - The Seattle Pilots travel to Washington in another game with playoff implications.

5/13 - The Pirates host the Indians, this could be when the Pirates start to separate from the rest (my prediction for league champion).

5/16 - The Astros host the Pirates; could be the biggest game of the young season so far.

I am going to focus primarily on the top two leagues and give just occasional run-downs of the lower leagues throughout the season.

Still working out how I am going to handle the postings so bear with me as I find a solution that isn't too tedious but will give the best feel for it.

A battle for the top spot as the Mets travel to Baltimore to take on the Orioles. Denny Lemaster (6-1, 2.25) goes for the Mets against Tom Seaver (5-3, 4.98). In a back and forth game the Mets take a 4-3 lead into the 9th with Dick Selma on the mound looking for the save. With 2 outs and runners at the corners Cito Gaston laces a ball into the gap in left for a double that, more importantly, clears the bases for the walk off 5-4 victory. The Orioles take over sole possession of first place at 16-5 as he Mets drop to 2nd at 15-6.

The 13-7 Yankees look to stay in playoff range as they travel west to face the Angels (6-14) as they are trying to get out of the relegation zone. The Yankees win easily 9-2.

The 13-7 Cardinals try to keep pace with the Yankees as they also travel west as they face the Dodgers who sit at 9-11 (3 games clear of relegation and 4 games out of the playoff hunt). The Cardinals score 16 runs on 21 hits in a 16-4 victory behind a 2 home run, 4 RBI performance by Jackie Hernandez.

The Phillies (12-8) travel to play at Minnesota (13-7) with both teams looking to make the post season. With the Twins leading 2-1 in the top of the 9th the Phillies put together a 3 run inning to take a 4-2 lead. Ken T Johnson throws a 1-2-3 ninth for his 3rd save of the season.

Washington sends Mickey Lolich (9-0, 1.22) to the mound in search of his 10th victory against the Richmond Braves who sit only one game away from potential relegation. Lolich throws a complete game 3 hit shutout in an 8-0 Senators' victory.

The Padres travel to Cleveland to face the Indians. The Indians try to keep pace with the Senators at two games back while the Padres are a game out of a potential playoff appearance with a chance to earn promotion. Steve Carlton throws a 6 hit shutout for the Padres as they pick up an important victory 3-0. The Indians now trail the Senators by 3 games with 9 left to play.

The Seattle Pilots travel to Houston to face the Astros. The Pilots are 2 games out of a playoff spot while the Astros are sitting as potential 4 seed in the playoffs. Houston gives Seattle's Gaylord Perry his first loss of the season with a 5-1 victory.

The Toledo Mud Hens try to stay in a potential playoff position as they travel to Columbus who is just looking to stay out of relegation range. Columbus gets an important 4-2 victory that makes the stretch run a little more difficult for Toledo.

The Angels (6-15) face the Mets (15-6) as they need to string together a few wins to get out of relegation range. Jim Bunning improves to 7-2 for the Mets as they take a 5-0 lead early and hang on for the 5-2 victory.

The Red Sox (4-17) need wins badly or they will be in the IL next season as they travel to Philadelphia to take on the Phillies (13-8) who are looking to get into post season position. The Red Sox lead 1-0 going into the bottom of the 9th before a 1 out double by Joe Foy ties the game and sends it to extra innings. In the top of the 10th a lead off triple by Juan Beniquez kick starts the inning for the Red Sox as they score twice to take a 3-1 lead. Rollie Fingers pitches a 1/2/3 bottom of the 10th as the Red Sox get a much needed victory.

The White Sox (7-14) travel to New York to face the Yankees (14-7). The Angels need to improve their position while the Yankees are looking to keep their post season position strong. The Yankees ride 6 early runs to a 6-3 victory.

In a possible playoff preview the Orioles (16-5) play at St. Louis (14-7). The Cardinals score 4 times in the first inning to take a 4-0 lead. The Orioles get their own big inning in the 4th as they score 5 times, aided by a Cito Gaston grand slam, to take a 5-4 lead. That was the only scoring of the game as the Orioles win 5-4.

The Expos (13-8) host the Pirates (18-3). The Pirates are still a game behind the Senators in a race for the league crown and automatic promotion. The Expos are 2 games out of a playoff spot. Phil Niekro improves to 10-1 as the Pirates pound the Expos 13-1.

The Houston Astros (16-5) travel to San Diego to face the Padres (15-6). Both teams are right in the mix of the playoff race and hoping to get that number 2 seed to earn a home game in round one. The game is a pitchers' duel which goes to extra innings tied 1-1. Houston's Victor Price breaks the tie in the top of the 10th with a solo home run as Houston pulls out the 2-1 victory.

The Cleveland Indians (16-5) have a tough task ahead as they travel to Washington to face the league leading Senators (19-2). Don Sutton remains unbeaten and improves to (8-0) as he throws a 6 hit shutout in a 1-0 pitchers' duel with Fritz Peterson. The Indians win 1-0, cheers can be heard in Pittsburgh as they have now pulled even with the Senators.

Entering the final 8 games of the season. Only the 5-17 Red Sox have been eliminated from playoff contention.

Playoffs as they would sit right now:
(1) Baltimore Orioles (17-5) vs. (4) St. Louis Cardinals (14-8)
(2) New York Mets (16-6) vs. (3) New York Yankees (15-7)

Relegation as it sits now:
Boston Red Sox (5-17)
California Angels (6-16)

Today's Key Games:
Minnesota Twins (14-8) @ Baltimore Orioles (17-5). The game is tight as the Twins lead 4-3 going into the bottom of the 9th. A two out RBI single by Cito Gaston ties the game 4-4 and the game goes to extra innings. Mike Andrew leads off the top of the 11th with a solo home run to give the Twins a 5-4 lead and they hang on for a much needed victory as they look to slide into a playoff spot.

St. Louis Cardinal (14-8) @ California Angels (6-17). The Angels try to get out of the relegation zone and they lead 2-0 late in the game. In the top of the 8th Joe Lis hits a two run home run to tie the game 2-2 and it goes into extra innings. In the top of the 10th Chris Johnson hits his first home run of the season, a 3 run shot, to give the Cardinals a 5-2 lead and they go on to win by that score. The loss eliminates the Angels from playoff contention mathematically.

San Francisco Giants (13-9) @ Detroit Tigers (12-10). Both teams can use a win to stay in striking distance for a playoff birth. Three straight games now go into exra innings today as this one is 3-3 as they enter the 10th. With one out in the top of the 10th Terry Crowley hits his first home run of the season, a solo shot, to give the Giants a 4-3 lead. Don Drysdale retires the side in order in the bottom half as the Giants win 4-3 and stay a game out of a potential playoff birth.

New York Mets (16-6) @ Chicago White Sox (7-15). One team looking to have a chance to take over the top spot in the league and another looking to stay out of relegation range. With the game tied 7-7 entering the 9th Gene Tenace singles home a go ahead run to make it 8-7. In the bottom of the 9th Jerry Kenney knocks in the tying run with his 4th hit of the game and the game goes into extra innings tied 8-8. In the bottom of the 10th with 2 on and 2 out Frank Johnson hits a 3 run blast, his first of the season, for a wlk off 11-8 victory for the White Sox.

Entering the final 8 game stretch of the season, the Washington Senators and Pittsburgh Pirates are tied at 19-3 for the league title and automatic promotion to the MLB.

The playoffs for the second spot would be:
Senators/Pirates (the one that doesn't win the title) vs. Toledo Mud Hens (16-6)
(2) Cleveland Indians (17-5) vs. (3) Houston Astros (17-5)

On the other end, the Rochester Red Wings sit at 2-20 at the bottom of the league with the Tidewater Tides at 3-19. Both are in the relegation zone. The Syracuse Chiefs and Louisville Colonels are just ahead at 4-18.

Today's notable games:
Toledo Mud Hens (16-6) @ Pittsburgh Pirates (19-3). The Pirates rode a fine performance by Jim Nash (9-2) to a 5-2 victory.

Seattle Pilots (14-8) @ Syracise Chiefs (4-18). The Pilots try to get into the playoff range for a chance to earn promotion as they get a 3 hit shutout by Gaylord Perry in a huge 16-0 victory.

San Diego Padres (15-7) @ Louisville Colonels (4-18). The Padres edge out a 4-2 victory behind Steve Carlton (7-3).

Washington Senators (19-3) @ Houston Astros (17-5). Houston gets out to a 7-0 lead through 6 as the Senators work their way back into the game with 3 runs in the 7th and 2 in the 8th to make it 7-5. A one out solo home run by John Stevenson in the top of the 9th makes it a 1 run game but the Astros manage to hang on as Hoyt Wilhelm then closes the door. The Astros win a big game 7-6 which puts the Pirates in 1st place all by themselves and puts the Astros just 1 game back of a possible number 1 seed in the playoffs.

Baltimore Orioles (17-6) @ Boston Red Sox (5-18). The Orioles pound the Red Sox (into the IL?) by a 15-4 score. Sal Bando and Bobby Bonds each hit their 6th home run of the season and Dock Ellis improves to 8-1.

New York Yankees (16-7) @ New York Mets (16-7). Denny LeMaster improves to 7-1 as the Mets beat the Yankees 6-3.

Chicago White Sox (8-15) @ St. Louis Cardinals (15-8). The Cardinals win big 12-1 and pull even with the Yankees in the standings.

California Angels (6-17) @ Minnesota Twins (15-8). The Angels help their cause and hurt the Twins playoff hopes with a 6-5 victory as they jumped out with 5 runs in the first 3 innings and held on.

Atlanta Braves (8-15) @ San Francisco Giants (14-9). The Giants' playoff hopes took a bit of a hit as they took a 3-2 lead into the 9th but a 2 run home run by Greg Luzinski (his 6th of the season) would put the Braves on top 4-3. A 1,2,3 bottom of the 9th would give the Braves the victory.

Pittsburgh Pirates (20-3) @ Tidewater Tides (3-20). A beating of all beatings. The Tides could have used a mercy rule as the Pirates bat around in 3 different innings as they win 27-0. To add insult to injury Phil Niekro improves to 11-1 with a 1 hit shutout.

Cleveland Indians (18-5) @ Columbus Jets (11-12). The Indians score 11 times on 17 hits in an 11-5 victory.

Houston Astros (18-5) @ Rochester Red Wings (2-21). Rochester holds a 2-0 lead into the top of the 9th in what could be a huge moral victory. Rico Carty then struck with a 2 run home run with no outs in the 9th to tie the game 2-2. The game would go into extra innings and in the top of the 11th with the bases loaded and one out Ron Santo would clear the bases with a double to give the Astros a 5-2 lead. The Astros would hold onto that 5-2 lead for the victory. What could have been positive momentum may turn into a letdown that leads them to the American Association next year.

Louisville Colonels (4-19) @ Washington Senators (19-4). The Senators had to out-do the Pirates as the score 28 in a 28-2 victory.

Buffalo Bisons (5-18) @ Toledo Mud Hens (16-7). Toledo takes an early 5-0 lead and rides that to a 5-2 victory.

Syracuse Chiefs (4-19) @ Montreal Expos (14-9). Syracuse stuns the Expos and hurts their playoff chances with a big 9-3 road victory. The Chiefs are now 2 games clear of the relegation zone.

Seattle Pilots (15-8) @ San Diego Padres (16-7). The Padres ride a great outing by Bobby Bolin who improves to 9-1 in a 3-0 victory. Seattle drops to 2 games out of a possible playoff birth.

The Montgomery Rebels are in the PCL. Middle of the pack last I checked.

Still trying to work out a way to cover all of the leagues. May take a season or two to get into a good approach.

St. Louis Cardinals (16-8) @ New York Yankees (16-8). The Yankees take a 3-1 lead through the second but it is short lived as the Cardinals score twice in the third to tie the game. Paul Blair leads off the 6th inning with a home run, his 6th of the season, to give the Cardinals a 4-3 lead which would be the final. The Yankees are now at risk of missing the playoffs after having been in range to make them for much of the season.

San Francisco Giants (14-10) @ Cincinnati Reds (12-12). The Giants need wins in a hurry if they want to make the post season. They come up big with a 10-2 victory.

Boston Red Sox (5-17) @ California Angels (7-17). The Red Sox pretty much need to win out to avoid relegation. The Angels are one game away from potentially being safe but are currently in the 2nd relegation position. All runs come by way of home run as the Red Sox hit two solo shots and the Angels get one home run from Bill Melton, but his was a 3 run shot as the Angels win 3-2, the loss leaves the Red Sox at least 3 games in relegation position with only 5 to play, they should prepare for the IL next season.

Philadelphia Phillies (14-10) @ Atlanta Braves (9-15). The Braves are playing to remain safe while the Phillies are hoping for a late surge to make the post season. The Braves lead 6-2 after 6 innings. In the top of the 7th the Phillies core 3 times, aided by a Lee Green home run, to get back to 6-5. The score stays 6-5 heading into the 9th. The Phillies string 4 singles together in the inning to score twice and take a 7-6 lead which they would hang onto for the comeback victory.

Baltimore Orioles (18-6) @ Chicago Cubs (8-16). The Orioles are looking to keep the top seed while the Cubs are trying to stay one up on the Angels. The Orioles win a tight 2-1 game behind Tom Seaver (6-3). The Cubs are back at risk as the Orioles maintain the top spot.

Minnesota Twins (15-9) @ Chicago White Sox (8-16). The Twins are looking playoffs while the White Sox need to stay a game up on the Cubs and Angels so they stay in the safe zone. The Twins win 7-4 as Jim Wynn hits his 10th home run of the season.

New York Mets (17-7) @ Oakland A's (10-14). The Mets need a win to keep pace with the Orioles and avoid allowing the Cardinals to draw even for the 2nd seed. The Mets unload on the A's 9-1 for the victory.

Toledo Mud Hens (17-7) @ Montreal Expos (14-10). The Expos keep their slim playoff hopes alive and deal a blow to Toledo with a 5-3 victory thank to a 2 home run game from Dick Allen.

Washington Senators (20-4) @ Seattle Pilots (15-9). The Senators keep pressure on the Pirates for the top spot and hurt Seattle's post season chances with a 7-3 victory thanks to a 4 run 8th inning.

Tidewater Tides (3-21) @ Buffalo Bisons (5-19). Buffalo leads 4-3 in the top of the 9th when Tidewater gets a 2 run single from Douglas Bozeman to take a 5-4 lead which they would hold for the victory. They need a few more of those to get out of relegation and the Buffalo fans have to start worrying about relegation a little more.

Rochester Red Wings (2-22) @ Louisville Colonels (4-20). Rochester gets a combined 2 hit shutout as they win 3-0 as the race to avoid relegation is getting very tight with only 5 games to play.

Richmond Braves (9-15) @ Pittsburgh Pirates (21-3). Jim Nash improves to 10-2 as the Pirates maintain first place with a 3-1 victory.

San Diego Padres (17-7) @ Syracuse Chiefs (5-19). The Padres move into a playoff spot with a 6-2 victory as Syracuse remains in the very crowded race to avoid relegation.

Columbus Jets (11-13) @ Houston Astros (19-5). Houston wins 6-1 thanks to a 5 run 8th inning as they look to secure at least one home game in the playoffs.

Cleveland Indians (19-5) @ Kansas City Royals (11-13). The Indians keep pace with the Astros with a 7-1 victory.

7/2 - MLB
Detroit Tigers (13-12) @ Baltimore Orioles (19-6). The Orioles send Dock Ellis (8-1, 3.03) to the hill looking to keep their solitary hold on first place. With the Tigers up 2-1 in the 9th Sal Bando takes Milt Pappas deep for a solo shot to tie the game 2-2 and send it to extra innings. The game remained locked at 2 until the top of the 14th when the Tigers bat around and score 4 runs to take a 6-2 lead which would be the final.

Chicago White Sox (8-17) @ Boston Red Sox (5-20). A loss here all but guarantees the Red Sox will be International League bound next season. The Red Sox score 5 times in the 4th to take a 5-0 lead. The White Sox struck back as they put up 4 in the 7th and 3 in the 8th to take a 7-5 lead and would go on to win 7-6.

New York Yankees (16-9) @ Minnesota Twins (16-9). Two teams vying for the last playoff position. The Twins would take a 5-0 lead into the 8th. The Yankees would score 3 runs in the 8th to get to 5-3 and then 5 runs in the top of the 9th to take an 8-5 lead. The Twins would load the based in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs and Fred Reed would live out all kids dreams with a 2 out game winning grand slam in the bottom of the 9th as the Twins win 9-8.

California Angels (8-17) @ Chicago Cubs (8-17). The second relegation spot is wide open and the loser of this game would move into that spot. The Cubs win big with an 8-0 shutout.

New York Mets (18-7) @ St. Louis Cardinals (17-8). The Cardinals move up in the standings with a 7-2 victory.

Pittsburgh Pirates (22-3) @ Cleveland Indians (20-5). The league leading Pirates have Phil Niekro (11-1, 1.87) going against Don Sutton (9-0, 1.29) for the Indians in what could be an epic pitcher's duel. Niekro earns his 12th victory of the season as Sutton is handed his first loss as the Pirates win 6-2.

Louisville Colonels (4-21) @ Columbus Jets (11-14). Louisville needs to string together some wins to avoid relegation. The Colonels lead 6-2 after the 5th inning but the Jets score 5 in the bottom of the 6th to take a 7-6 lead. Columbus would go on to win 8-7.

Buffalo Bisons (5-20) @ Richmond Braves (9-16). Buffalo would like to put two games between them and Louisville with a win. The game could see a lot of scoring as the starting pitchers both have ERA's over 6. In surprising fashion the game is a tight 4-2 game in which Buffalo wins to put 2 games between themselves and relegation with just 4 games remaining.

Seattle Pilots (15-10) @ Rochester Red Wings (3-22). Seattle has an outside chance at the playoffs if they can win while the Red Wings need wins badly. Seattle keeps their slim chances alive with a 7-2 victory.

Montreal Expos (15-10) @ Tidewater Tides (4-21). Much like the last game, this game is one team trying to keep playoff hopes alive and one just trying to get out of relegation. Montreal wins big, 11-1.

Syracuse Chiefs (5-20) @ Toledo Mud Hens (17-8). Syracuse could use a win to make a gap between themselves and relegation while Toledo is in a playoff race. Toledo rides a 3-1 lead through 5 innings to a 3-2 victory.

Houston Astros (20-5) @ Kansas City Royals (11-14). The game means little for the Royals but the Astros could be in contention for a number one seed in the playoffs with a victory. Houston pounds them 13-1 with a 5 home run explosion.

San Diego Padres (18-7) @ Washington Senators (21-4). A big game for both in terms of post season and the Senators can stay within one of the league title. The Padres get a 4 hit shutout fro Bobby Bolin (10-1) in a 3-0 victory.
