Monday, October 31st, 1983: FOOL News: Free Agents File
Front Office Offseason League announced the start of the free agency period today.

Players with expiring contracts began to file as the clock struck midnight and general managers were already making the rounds. With the opening of free agency came a predictable chorus of speculation from the media.

While most teams are likely to make at least some small moves, it's still uncertain who the movers and shakers will be. Reporters expect a lot of attention to be lavished on the cream of the free agent crop, including these players:

1. Raúl Ortíz, 32 year-old starting pitcher
2. Dave Hardee, 36 year-old starting pitcher
3. Gilbert Perreault, 32 year-old starting pitcher
4. Gareth Simons, 24 year-old shortstop
5. Paul Wilson, 30 year-old starting pitcher
6. Jonas Leis, 30 year-old starting pitcher
7. Arturo Pereira, 30 year-old starting pitcher
8. Cipriano Bruno, 30 year-old reliever
9. Roger Frederick, 32 year-old reliever
10. Máximo López, 28 year-old reliever

Signings can continue throughout the off-season, although most of the high quality players are expected to conclude negotiations long before then. Most players want to be well paid, but they also want to get settled so they can start the process of moving family across town or across the country.

This is going to be an interesting free agency.

Oh and YAY Ibarra, one of possibly many we'll have over the next couple of years.

If it is worth much, when I did a ton of run throughs trying to find better player valuations a while back, Bobby Barrett was the only player who considered himself fully to be a "Super-Star" player in all regards in his own self-evaluation and contract demands. I found that interesting since he hadn't fully blossomed yet at that point.

Did you re-sign him before he hit his peak years (26-27-28) or so? Mostly just curious.. I would expect based off of the experiments earlier that he would ask for more if it was when he was age 27 or 28.

signed him in 1980, so he was 27.

edit: he has 2 years left.

About to kick off tonight's sim. Before I do, I would like to thank everyone who responded to the survey that I sent out today to all of the current owners other than Brittdad who had just joined. I received well written, well thought out responses from every team except two. I want to wait until tommorrow before I respond to any of them so I can see the responses from the last two teams (if they choose to do so).

I think the equally challenging part is how many years to offer and if any should be option years.

I passed on Simons, hoping to snag lesser talent. Still not ready for prime time and I don't know if Simons is a part I need a couple years from now.

And I'm unable to part with Lang, now we go for 3,000 hits; 1,000 RBIs; 200 3Bs; and 1250 SBs before he retires.

Way to go, Tasan. Wow, that's a lot of cash.

And ekcut gets Tim Dale, he who turns down money for MLCs. I offered him an MLC, too, of course, but I never seem to win those on really good players.

I will say this, though, I offered MLCs around like candy, and there were some bites for the Crackers.

Thats a real nice sign. I didn't go quite high enough, though same years. He's gonna be real good I think.

I'm happy with Henry for the discounted price of 29 mil.

Did Ramon Chavez sign with anyone? I didn't see him in the list.

And ekcut gets Tim Dale, he who turns down money for MLCs. I offered him an MLC, too, of course, but I never seem to win those on really good players.

I will say this, though, I offered MLCs around like candy, and there were some bites for the Crackers.

Yeah it is. I crunched my budget for the next 5 years to make sure he fit comfortably. It does, with room to spare.

Nope, side effect of the extended playoffs meant a shorter day 1 of free agency and less players signing. There are stilll the following free agents left:

1 5-star
2 4.5 star
3 4-star
1 3.5-star

Whew, I'm glad Simons signed then. I did NOT want to go through what I had to get "Slider".

Oh and does anyone want 2B Chris White? I'm really not sure why I signed him. For some reason he wound up on my list and got an offer though. I really need to do these things when I'm fully awake.

Last thing I needed was another strong starting pitcher (I mean, next to other needs). But I saw him out there. I wondered who would nab him. You're right, I think Cringer did very well there.

Oh come on, admit it. You were beaten out by $2 and a bag of fritos!

Not sure if I'll ever be able to prove my theory on MLCs but Hartford did not export tonight, the next two teams numerically are Atlanta and San Diego though.

San Diego musta got the good ones then, because I signed a ton of prospects--almost all of whom are probably marginal.

I think Tim Guru has labeled it "Chief Rum's Phil Deen Approach To Minor League System Development".

It's a good start.

So Hartford is #1 numerically? Figures.

Well I'm done with big splashes unless a certain player somehow suddenly hits the market. I'm not holding my breath either.

That's evil. Much as I didn't like that deal, DC got hosed in the aftermath. I don't know if he even offered Pereira, but I know he was out there, and then Simons doesn't even accept the offer he himself said he would accept? I can't stand that. The Meet Demand button should practically be an automatic extension signing (but purposely, the game should make the "Meet Demand" numbers high, even higher than the market, which of course, OOTP struggles to do).

What player is that? Barrett? Billy Smith?

One thing that I always laughed at, but never really mentioned it because I didn't want to sound petty.. Every team has a team number in the 200s except the two expansion teams that came in the mid 1960s who had team numbers in the 400s.... and Valdosta. For some reason I had a team number in the 500s.. no idea why.. but I always laughed at that

On a serious note, I have plans to do some testing in regards to how MLC sign, and try to have a solution to balance it out a bit better in this league.. but I kind of have bigger fish to fry this week evidently...

I didn't let him go. I offered him extensions all year long. But it wasn't good enough. I'm fine to let him go for all of the money you offered him, as my plan is to spend minimally for the entire decade.

Valdosta...

I have been thinking of moving one my minor league franchises there and sullying the good name of the Peanuts. What say you, Alan?
