Hammersmith's Julio Rangel throws the first no-hitter in 3 years!!

Friday, April 11th, 2031: Rangel Hurls No-Hitter Against Winged Lingerines
It was a terrific day for Júlio Rangel of the Hammersmith Hooligans at Ballpark of Hammersmith. He stood out with a fantastic 3-0 no-hitter against the Ann Arbor Winged Lingerines.

"I knew I had a No-No going in about the sixth inning, when I noticed no one was talking to me anymore," he said, referring to the time honored superstition of teammates avoiding the pitcher so they won't jinx the no-hitter. "Don't let people fool you. Everybody on the field and in the ballpark knows what's happening. They just pretend they don't."

For the game Rangel totaled 3 walks and 8 strikeouts in a very strong outing.

The Hammersmith pitching coach marveled at his performance, "His mechanics were perfect and I don't think he threw one bad pitch in the whole game. He was that good."

It was a historic day for Ann Arbor's fine first baseman Francisco Salinas. He slammed home run number 300 in the Winged Lingerines 8-7 loss to the Hartford Harpooners at Ann Arbor Grounds.

In his milestone-making game Salinas went 3 for 5, scored 3 runs and collected 4 runs batted in. That home run put him in a select group of ballplayers.

In his 1318-game career Salinas is hitting .301 with 1580 hits, 353 doubles, 17 triples and 301 home runs. He has scored 773 runs and driven in 1140.

Juteau looks like the real deal! But 7 Home runs for only 12 RBI? That kid needs some help in the lineup!

Ben Keyte becomes the 18th member of the FOOL 400 HR club!

Monday, May 5th, 2031: Keyte Smashes 400th Homer
The crowd roared -- they knew they were seeing history -- and Ben Keyte was delighted, too -- the 37-year-old Charm right fielder was making history with his 400th career homer. The crowd buzzed and roared again when Keyte stuck his head out of the dugout for a curtain call.

"Never, as a kid, did I ever think I'd hit even one," he told BNN after hitting No. 400 in a 7-4 victory over Boston. Keyte went 2-2 in the game, had 4 runs batted in and scored 2 runs.

His lifetime stats show Keyte has batted .294 and collected 2312 hits, 401 home runs and 1573 RBIs.

A second No-Hitter of the season, this time by a Rookie!!

Tuesday, May 13th, 2031: Blankenship Tosses No-Hitter Against Napa Valley
No hitters are rare. But the fans at Charm Ballpark received a special gift as Byron Blankenship of the Charm tossed a no-hitter against the Napa Valley Winemakers. He was masterful as he struck out 8 and walked 5 in a 2-0 Baltimore victory. In all Blankenship faced only 31 batters. Blankenship did not appear to have his best stuff in the early innings, but soon got into a groove and made quick work of the Winemakers. He was helped by several defensive gems along the way.

The Napa Valley manager said to the press after the no-hitter, "We had our chances in the first few innings, when he was hittable, but he shut us down totally in the last 4-5 innings."

"I had late movement that seemed to cause them a lot of trouble, especially from the fifth inning on," Blankenship said to reporters.

This season Blankenship has a 6-3 mark in 10 starts with a 4.15 ERA. He has given up 42 hits in 56.1 innings, struck out 51 and issued 38 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .211 batting average against him.

Thursday, May 15th, 2031: Estrada Gets 6 Hits
Jesús Estrada exploded for a barrage of base hits today at Ann Arbor Grounds. The Ann Arbor right fielder had a field day in the 18-4 triumph over the Hammersmith Hooligans, finishing with a 6-6 day and a spot in the league record book.

"My hitting philosophy is pretty simple," he said. "I focus on just seeing the ball and I try to get a good pitch."

Well, Estrada must have focused at least 6 times and apparently got some good pitches, too. It was one of his best days ever with the bat.

J. Estrada hit an RBI double in the 1st, doubled in the 2nd, hit a two-run single in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, hit a three-run home run off J. Rivera in the 7th and hit a two-run double in the 7th.

Estrada is batting .385 with 4 home runs and 28 RBIs this season.

Sunday, May 18th, 2031: Hernández Tops New York for 200th Win
History was made today at Ballpark of Hammersmith -- Alfredo Hernández won game #200 to seal his name in the league record books. The Hammersmith ace downed the New York Heroes 12-4 to gain entrance into the elite 200 Club.

"I was wound up at first. I think I threw too hard," remarked Hernández, "I had to calm down and go out there and pitch... not just throw. I think I got better as the game wore on. I started to think less about 200 wins and more about doing what I had to do."

Hernández's career stats shape up like this: In 2985.1 innings he has struck out 2411, walked 823 and saved 7 games while compiling a 200-135 record and a 3.84 ERA.

Tuesday, May 27th, 2031: Tokyo Shuts out Charm, Davis Winner
Mike Davis was in command in his outing against the Baltimore Charm. He hurled the Tokyo Cyclones to a 7-0 shutout victory, yielded 3 hits and chalked up 10 strikeouts and no walks.

"A complete-game shutout. That's fun territory for me," he told reporters in the postgame interview. "I had good balance and mechanics and was able to keep the ball down. When I do that, good things happen."

In 11 starts this season Davis has notched a 5-3 record and a 5.78 ERA.

Sunday, June 1st, 2031: Harpooners Hurler Named RL's #1 Starter
Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Renaud Lemieux still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in May. The 26-year-old starter for Hartford was named Republic League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 4 wins and 2 losses with 33 strikeouts in his 6 starts, putting up a fine 2.05 ERA in 48.1 innings of work.

Looking at his season stats, Lemieux has won 7 and lost 3, collecting 58 strikeouts and 24 walks in 86.1 innings with a 2.19 ERA.

Sunday, June 1st, 2031: Winemakers Hurler Named May's #1 Starter
António González took home the Continental League Pitcher of the Month honors in May. After all these years playing ball, the 37-year-old veteran still enjoys the game as though he'd just broken camp for the first time a month ago. He's a bit older now with a few more aches and pains, but the old man has reason to celebrate, having gone 5-1 for Napa Valley last month and claiming the Pitcher of the Month award.

He tacked up a 2.74 ERA in his 8 starts, tossing 49.1 innings and striking out 36.

So far this year González has made 15 starts, tossed 82 innings, struck out 55 batters and walked 15. His record is 6-5 with a 4.28 ERA and he has limited opposing teams to a .246 batting average.

Sunday, June 1st, 2031: RL Picks Rookie of the Month
Danjuro Ikeda was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 25-year-old first baseman definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen May's Republic League Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting.

In 21 games Ikeda batted .321 for New York, slapping 25 hits in 78 at-bats with 4 home runs, drove in 14 runs and scored 10 times.

This season Ikeda is swinging the bat at a .305 rate with 47 hits in 154 at-bats. To date he has hit 5 home runs, scored 18 runs and driven in 19.

Sunday, June 1st, 2031: Rookie Reels In Continental League Award
A boyish Dave Juteau emerged as the latest Continental League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Tokyo deserved the honor, batting .375 with 8 home runs and 32 RBI. Is the month of May a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Juteau enjoy the limelight.

This year Juteau has collected a .345 batting average to date with 76 hits in 220 at-bats, 44 RBIs, 15 home runs and scored 37 times. He has played in 57 games.

Thursday, June 12th, 2031: Four-bagger Feast: Luján Slugs 3 for Baltimore
In the Baltimore 7-2 win over Tokyo, Sergio Luján was in a home run mode. He tortured the Cyclones, cracking out three home runs and going 3-4 with 5 RBIs and scoring 3 runs.

"When you're hot, you're hot," said a grinning Luján in the postgame press conference.

"I got some good pitches to hit and got a good swing going today. I cannot believe it happened. I was like, 'I don't know what I'm doing.' It was one of the better days in my baseball career. I was on cloud nine out there and I was enjoying it."

S. Luján hit a solo-shot off M. Davis in the 1st, hit a solo-shot off M. Davis in the 3rd, flied out in the 6th and hit a three-run home run off M. Davis in the 8th.

This season in 68 games, Luján has hit at a .314 clip with 80 hits, 18 home runs, 42 RBIs and 51 runs scored.

Sunday, June 15th, 2031: 2000 Hits for Yamashita
Iwane Yamashita started out as a baby-faced rookie many seasons ago. Yesterday at Assasins Ballpark the Apex veteran joined the league's 2000-hit club. Yamashita achieved that milestone with a 3-for-5 day in the Assassins 10-1 win over the Edmonton Edge.

He spoke to reporters in the clubhouse after the game and said, "Looking at the list of all the great players who have done this is humbling. It is a great honor to be among them."

In his career Yamashita has racked up 2000 hits with a .289 average and .344 on-base percentage. His numbers include 526 doubles, 43 triples and 253 home runs, along with 937 runs scored and 1081 RBIs.

Wednesday, June 18th, 2031: It's Over: Rebels Stop Estrada
Lady Luck was not on the side of Jesús Estrada or his teammates today at Ann Arbor Grounds. Everything went the Chico Rebels way. They not only came away with a 5-4 victory, but also held Estrada hitless in 3 at-bats to put an end to the right fielder's 21-game hitting streak.

"It was a good run," Estrada said afterward. "But it'd be much easier to take right now if we had won."

To date Estrada has chalked up a .381 average with 6 home runs, driven in 50 runs and scored 58 times.

Friday, June 20th, 2031: FOOL News: The All-Star Game Rosters Have Been Announced
It is not an easy task to pick the best players for the annual baseball classic -- the All-Star Game. It is not possible to please everybody. Whether we agree or not, they have been chosen... and here they are. The rosters for this year's Front Office Offseason League All-Star Game have been announced.

For the Continental League, the roster includes:
SP A. Sánchez (BAL)

RF A. Miranda (APX)
3B M. Sherman (BAL)
3B A. Bryant (APX)
RF D. Ackerman (TOK)

.

For the Republic League these players have been selected:

The manager conceded that not every deserving player is rewarded with a spot on the roster. "Every year," he said, "someone is disappointed to be left out. This year's no different -- too many good players, not enough roster spots."

It is the all star break. We will pause here momentarily if anyone wants to ask how one of their players are doing thus far this season. I'll post the replies after the all star game has completed!

Juteau was the 2nd batter selected for the CL team. In the running for the Tanaka Award for sure as a rookie!

Only bested by Mr. Che. Those two will probably swap the award for the next 10 years.

Thanks to the All Star game, I just noticed Hinkle for Apex is 10-1 thus far this season.. while the other start Juan Sierra is only 6-6.. talk about weird!

Sierra is only getting 2.40 Runs of support per game from his offense!
