Tuesday, April 21st, 2037: Number 2500 for Ward
Newark's Brennan Ward entered the record books today as he collected hit number 2500 at Zion Stadium.

"I am proud of this. Not too many player reach this level. You have to be around quite a few years and you have to get a lot of hits," Ward said after the game.

On his milestone day he went 2 for 4 as the Terriers won 4-0 over the Edmonton Edge.

Ward has a career .335 batting average with a .393 OBP. He has hit 363 homers, driven in 1428 runs and scored 1163 runs since he came into the league.

Based purely on where I ranked them, the league finish will be:

CL

1. Baltimore
2. Edmonton
3. Tokyo
4. Napa Valley
5. Boston
6. Apex
7. Newark

The top 5 teams will all contend for the playoffs, in an ugly free for all.

RL

1. Colorado
2. Chico
3. Ann Arbor
4. Hammersmith
5. New York
6. Hartford
7. Hyannis

Colorado's gonna run away with it; but the next five teams can all contend for that second spot.

Friday, May 1st, 2037: CL Announces April's Best Starter
Norio Takeuchi hated to see April turn to May.
And who could blame him?
The 26-year-old hurler piled up 4 wins and 1 loss for the Cyclones last month and won the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award for his efforts.

Takeuchi stymied opposing batters on 35 base hits and a .199 batting average. He rang up 29 strikeouts in 48.1 innings of work, surrendered 11 walks and fashioned a sparkling 2.79 ERA.

In your league, pitching rules, and you got it. And you have a better lineup than Teach. But Teach has made a mockery of that before...

I think I can safely speak for Tim and myself, and maybe a few others, that we have just now born witness to the birth of our king. He who doth work a golf course, gains much admiration and envy and worship from all.

Friday, May 1st, 2037: RL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
A boyish Jeffery Williams emerged as the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Hammersmith deserved the honor, batting .406 with 1 home run and 13 runs batted in. Is the month of April a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Williams enjoy the limelight.

Friday, May 1st, 2037: Continental League Names Rookie of Month
José Villa's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Boston third baseman has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month.

In April he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award.

During the month he hit .344 with 5 doubles, no triples and no home runs. Villa also scored 9 times and drove in 17 runs.

Clip and save. I don't expect it to last.

I see my diabolical plan to start Betancourt in every game is working.

I'll take 14-12. Hell, after two last place finishes I'll take 12-14.

As for going to bed early, I might fall victim too as I'm going on my first shrimping expedition tomorrow. And, yes, it will be in the same waters Forrest Gump was shot.

I once was like you, my child. Then one day, I saw the light. I realized, I suck. I had always sucked. I always will suck.

Once I accepted this truism, my enjoyment of the game grew in leaps and bounds, and I laugh at the temper tantrums of my golf buddies.

Monday, May 11th, 2037: Number 300 for Che
Baltimore's outstanding right fielder Cong Che joined the 300 home run club today at Charm Ballpark with a booming blast in the Charm win over the Settlers. They topped Boston 14-10.

On his milestone day Che had 2 hits in 4 at-bats with 5 runs batted in and 2 runs scored.

Tongue-in-cheek he told the press, "Don't tell me when I get close to the next milestone. Just tell me after I reach it. It will be easier to hit that way."

Che is hitting .294 during his 1165-game career. He has 1342 hits, 235 doubles, 49 triples, 301 home runs, 892 RBIs, 137 stolen bases and 803 runs scored.

Monday, May 11th, 2037: 2500 Hits for Broomhead
The day belonged to Dan Broomhead of the Edmonton Edge as he became the latest player to reach the 2500-hit plateau. He did it in Edmonton's 6-5 win over Newark.

"It's a moment I'll never forget," said Broomhead after the game, "2500 hits is a lot. It puts you in a very select group. I never expected to be around long enough to reach a milestone like this."

He finished the day with 3 hits in 4 at-bats.

Lifetime Broomhead has hit .314 with 2501 hits, 267 home runs, 1259 RBIs and scored 1157 runs.

I hate playing out of a golf cart. I always seem to be the guy stranded on the far side of the fairway with the wrong club. Plus, my chiropractor said the cart almost undoubtedly played a role in my back locking up last time I used one (sitting I guess isn't the best way to maintain a loose set of lower back muscles).

Not that I want overly much exercise. No way I'll carry, I own a pull cart for my bag and covet my father's motorized one...it has a little remote control for your belt....bzzzzzzt....it rolls off in front of you.

The Hyannis Patriots got a great effort from Eddie Coleman as the 37-year-old hurler tossed a complete-game 6-0 shutout over the Hammersmith Hooligans. He struck out 6 while allowing 5 hits and walking 1.

Checking out his stats for the season, Coleman has registered 2 wins and no losses in 5 starts, 2.25 ERA and struck out 27 batters in 36 innings.

Old Hammersmith farmhands love to come back to kick my team's collective ass. Gilbert Edwards has been handing me my lunch for years now.

Tuesday, May 19th, 2037: Charm Bignell Hits 300th Homer
There was a big sigh of relief by Simon Bignell after he hit his 300th career homer. The Baltimore center fielder told BNN, "Whew. I'm glad it's over... now I can go back to just playing baseball."

It was quite a day for Bignell. He got his name in the league record books, 1 hit, 1 run batted in, scored 2 runs and his team, the Baltimore Charm beat the Newark Terriers 8-7.

Bignell knew it when he hit it. He raised his hands in the air, then ran the bases like a high school player clapping and grinning.

He told reporters in the post-game interview, "I was acting goofy running the bases... but it was my 300th home run."

"It was great," his manager said. "He stood there and watched it... we all did. You just felt it was coming... you just had a sense he would hit it soon... he has been having a lot of good at-bats. It was great to get it out of the way."

In his 1894-game career Bignell is batting .238 with 319 doubles, 30 triples, 300 home runs and 1063 RBIs. He has stolen 106 bases and scored 956 times.

Friday, May 29th, 2037: No Hits for Thompson, String Runs out at 22
Lady Luck was not on the side of Hugh Thompson or his teammates today at Ann Arbor Grounds. Everything went the New York Heroes way. They not only came away with a 4-3 victory, but also held Thompson hitless in 3 at-bats to put an end to the right fielder's 22-game hitting streak.

"It was a good run," Thompson said afterward. "But it'd be much easier to take right now if we had won."

Thompson is batting .383 this year with 10 home runs, 40 RBIs and 39 runs scored. He has 82 hits in 214 at-bats.

I'm not a fisherman. Haven't been in 10 years. A guy from work asked me to go and I said what the hell, I'll drink and take some shrimp home for dinner. When I told my gf she made some Bubba Gump jokes before realizing I live where the damn water scene was shot. The boat won't be as big.

DING DING.

My son, 10, who has been playing since exactly May 10, beat me yesterday. His only advantage was the red tees. Other than that, he beat me straight up. I couldn't have been happier for him. I have major holes in my game, but I take pride in my putting and love the walk in the woods.

Monday, June 1st, 2037: Betancourt Acclaimed Top Pitcher in May
When Vicente Betancourt takes the mound, a Hammersmith victory is usually the result. That was the the case in May.

That's why he was voted the Republic League Pitcher of the Month.

Betancourt throttled league hitters the whole month with an impressive 4-0 mark and 3.22 ERA in 6 starts. The Hooligans star hurler also rung up 45 strikeouts in 44.2 innings.

This year Betancourt has made 13 starts, thrown 97.1 innings, fanned 94 batters and walked 33. His won-lost record is 9-2 with a 2.77 ERA.
