FOOL 2038 Regular Season

FOOL kicks off its 78th season tonight at 9pm ET!

Prior to the start of the season, the Heroes of New York have made an announcement that they will be wearing a new jersey starting the 2038 season.

The new Heroes jersey is modeled below by future Hall of Famer Juan Sierra:

The 2035 Benny Myers award winner Callum MacIan here is seen in the new Heroes jersey:

FOOL announces that two new members have been elected to the FOOL Hall of Fame in St. Louis, Missouri. A third player has also been chosen by the Hall of Fame Veterans committee.

Wednesday, March 31st, 2038: Hall of Fame Inducts Hensley
Another pitcher was inducted into the Front Office Offseason League Hall of Fame today, but this time, it wasn't a starting pitcher. Instead, Mike Hensley proved that relievers were worth such a distinction for a career that spanned 1468 appearances. His dominating presence led to 555 saves and a 2.50 ERA, while he struck out 1772 in his 1764 innings. During his career Hensley also chalked up a 117-95 record.

"A lot of people think that relievers aren't important enough to be considered Hall of Fame material," the bullpen ace said during his speech. "But my teammates knew differently. All the starters loved having me come in after one of their good performances because they knew they'd get a win that day. I'm just glad that there are other people that agree with them."

Mike Hensley ended his career at the age of 44.

Wednesday, March 31st, 2038: Francisco Salinas Enters Hall Of Fame
Francisco Salinas, the great second baseman and consummate professional, was inducted into the Front Office Offseason League Hall of Fame today.

At the induction ceremony, he grew misty-eyed as he recalled the highlights of his playing career: his first base hit, his first home run, and -- humorously -- the first time he was thrown out at home plate.
Salinas says he barged through his third base coach's stop sign. As he returned to the dugout, his manager simply glared at him.

"His eyes just burned a hole right through me. If looks could kill, I wouldn't be here today," he chuckled.

More often than not, Salinas pleased his managers and coaches during his superb career.

His all-time numbers show Salinas compiled a .291 batting average and collected 2303 hits, 425 home runs and 1658 RBIs. In all, he played in 2064 games.

Wednesday, March 31st, 2038: Santos Enters FOOL Hall of Fame
Tomás Santos, a standout third baseman throughout his Front Office Offseason League career, has been inducted into the Hall of Fame.

During the induction ceremony, he credited the coaches, who taught him to play the game and the teammates, who taught him to be a professional.

However, the most important influence, Santos said, was his father.
"Pops never gave up on me," he said, "no matter how often I felt like giving up on myself.

In his 2798-game career, Santos hit .342 with 3556 hits, 159 home runs, 2140 runs scored and 1247 RBIs.

I can't tell from that picture (or can't remember anyway)--what uni is that that Hensley is sporting? Considering we have a thread on it.

That is the Montreal Majestics jersey. He ended up wearing that in to the hall due to popular support.

Man, buck's like an addict on crack for VI.

Man, I know how hard that stuff's to come up with, so if we get one, great and thanks Alan. If we don't, oh well, let's get to some fake baseball.

For me, the VI is just a wonderful icing on top of the cake--would love to see it, but I certainly don't expect Alan to put one together. He does so much as it is.

I would like to say I would do some more writing myself, but every time I try to commit to something, I get taken away from being able to do it by everything else I have going on. Maybe some day (wistful...)

Haha. I understand that the VI takes a good amount of work to come up with, but it is one of my favorite parts about FOOL. I enjoy reading it every single time Alan does one. Of course if he were to skip a week or two or stop doing it all together more power to him. But I can't help but look forward to it in the mean time

I actually usually have more that I want to put in the VI than I usually have room. I try to keep them somewhat short so they are "readable". So often I have articles that slide by for multiple years.

I do a ton of watching as the league goes by, so it really is mostly just a place to comment on things that I.. errr the VI finds interesting!

Goodluck all. I am afraid I am an also ran this year!
broomhead has hit the wall and dropped 20pts, I lost Long without finding a replacement. my brutal catcher is even brutaller, but i still have a crack rotation and a weak bullpen. JUST good enough to be mediocre and miss the playoffs while not getting a good draft pick.

Good luck folks.

I'm hoping young Aitken does well enough in the rotation to make up for the lesser production in the lineup now that Roy has moved on.

Streak carried over from last season.

Wednesday, April 7th, 2038: Heroes Halt Keith's Hit Streak
The Colorado Rancheros won the game 5-3 over the New York Heroes. At the same time the Heroes mound corps did what no other team could do. They stopped the 25-game hitting streak of Rancheros left fielder Mike Keith. But that was still not enough to win the game.

"Our pitchers may have focused a bit too much on stopping Keith," the New York manager commented afterward. "He had a nice hitting streak going, but the Rancheros have other hitters and they did their job today."

Another, bigger, better, longer hitting streak carried over from last season:

Monday, April 12th, 2038: Hartford Snaps Dawson's Streak at 30
All good things must come to an end -- and so it was today for Frank Dawson as he saw his 30-game hitting streak end. He went hitless in 3 at-bats at the hands of the Harpooners. It wasn't all bad for the 30-year-old first baseman and the Chico Rebels, as they defeated Hartford 5-3 at Rebels Ballpark.

When asked about his hitting streak, a smiling Dawson laughed and said, "I guess my luck ran out today."

This year Dawson has collected a .382 batting average to date with 13 hits in 34 at-bats, 8 RBIs, 2 home runs and scored 10 times. He has played in 7 games.

Saturday, May 1st, 2038: Hsi RL's #1 Pitcher in April
Kuei-lin Hsi's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 4-0 in April, the 31-year-old Chico hurler has been named Republic League Pitcher of the Month.

He fanned 25 in 38.1 innings, logged an ERA of 2.35 and allowed opponents to hit .270 against him.

Saturday, May 1st, 2038: Lemieux Garners CL #1 Pitcher Award
Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Renaud Lemieux still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in April. The 33-year-old starter for Napa Valley was named Continental League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 4 wins and 1 loss with 35 strikeouts in his 7 starts, putting up a fine 2.33 ERA in 46.1 innings of work.

Saturday, May 1st, 2038: RL's Best Batter Picked
Hou Chen battered Republic League pitchers all April and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award.

"I've been around Front Office Offseason League long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 32-year-old Chen told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I may not take the field and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month."

In 23 games, Chen hit .330 with 9 home runs, 28 RBIs and scored 21 runs.

My wireless card has been throwing fits so I wasn't able to make another export for today. Thus I'm rolling with an AI pitching staff and AI lineups. Hopefully it doesn't come back to hurt me at the end of the season.

Seasoned by several years of professional experience, 30-year-old Dave Juteau put together a solid offensive month for Tokyo and was crowned April's top batter in the Continental League.

He batted .409 with 7 home runs, 30 RBIs and 15 runs scored.

Saturday, May 1st, 2038: Republic League Names Rookie of Month
Gaël Pichette was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 21-year-old first baseman definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen April's Republic League Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting.

In 25 games Pichette batted .333 for New York, slapping 33 hits in 99 at-bats with 7 home runs, drove in 30 runs and scored 17 times.

Saturday, May 1st, 2038: Adams Gets April's Rookie Trophy
With April's Continental League Rookie of the Month title slung over his shoulder, Mark Adams has no reason to be modest about his statistical output. But he was, telling BNN reporters, "I just put the bat on the ball a lot and a lot of them fell in. It was just my month to shine."

The 26-year-old blistered the baseball last month as he posted a .350 batting average, 14 hits, 2 home runs, 11 RBIs and 8 runs scored.

Sunday, May 2nd, 2038: Klassen Hurls Masterpiece
A pitcher's main job is to keep the opposition off the scoreboard and Boston pitcher Rick Klassen did just that today in a 2-0 victory over the Tokyo Cyclones at Ballpark of Boston. He gave up no runs in his start, permitted 2 hits and had 3 strikeouts.

This season Klassen has 3 wins and 2 losses and a 3.96 ERA.

Taking on a stupid expansion team is really going to mess with my career winning percentage. What a bad idea. I do have a plan in place for the team though and it revolves largely around being bad for a while longer.

Saturday, May 22nd, 2038: Nadeau Hurls Patriots to Shutout Victory
Jean-François Nadeau of the Hyannis Patriots just toyed with the Hammersmith Hooligans today, blanking them 3-0. He was almost untouchable, baffling them on a 3-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts and 2 walks.

"I'm sweating now because it's hot in here," Nadeau said in the clubhouse after the game. "But it didn't even feel like I was sweating out there."

One of his teammates said it was easy to play behind him today. "It was like he's just playing with the hitters and doing whatever he wanted to do."

So far this season Nadeau has a 3-6 record, 9 starts, 44 innings, 41 strikeouts and a 8.18 ERA.

Tuesday, June 1st, 2038: RL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
A veritable toddler to the Republic League, Eiichi Watanabe just sewed up the Rookie of the Month trophy for May.

Over the past month the 25-year-old third baseman for Hammersmith hit .342 with 39 hits, 5 home runs and 23 runs batted in. He also logged 5 walks and compiled a .400 on-base percentage.

This season Watanabe has hit at a .272 clip with 36 RBIs, 8 home runs and 26 runs scored.

Tuesday, June 1st, 2038: Tokyo Hurler Nabs CL Rookie of the Month Crown
Jeremy Aitken is beginning to make a name for himself and he did it by posting a 5-1 record and a 2.78 ERA in May. For his spectacular mound performance last month he has been named BNN's Rookie of the Month in the Continental League.

The 21-year-old newcomer isn't at all intimidated by his lack of experience, at least not outwardly. In fact, by the way he has pitched beyond his years, you could easily mistake him for a veteran.

In 6 starts for the Cyclones Aitken has struck out 22 batters in 45.1 innings, holding opposing hitters to a batting average of .253 during his hot streak.

In 11 starts this season Aitken has crafted a 8-2 record with a 3.14 ERA.

Apex's Seved Krantz breezed through the Edge lineup today, collecting a 1-hit shutout and a 5-0 victory along the way. Krantz fanned 8 as well.

"I didn't really feel like I had my game today," Krantz confessed, "but some days are like that -- you just gotta go with what you have."

In 2038 Krantz has posted a record of 3 wins and 3 losses with a 3.74 ERA. He has appeared in 10 games and struck out 33 in 67.1 innings.

Nice timing, just in time to be 1-hit by Apex!

What a ridiculous game.

Surprisingly there have been 33 6-hit games in FOOL history before this one. I guess this is what happens when the wind blows out at 21 mph in Ann Arbor

Saturday, June 19th, 2038: Shaw 6-8 Against Winged Lingerines
Players get multi-hit games all the time. But a 6-hit game only comes around once in a blue moon. It happened at Ballpark of Hammersmith when Walt Shaw of Hammersmith scattered 6 hits all over the ballpark against the Ann Arbor Winged Lingerines.

He walloped 6 hits in 8 at-bats in his career-day performance to help the Hooligans get by the Winged Lingerines 31-12.

In a talkative and jovial mood after the game, the center fielder of the Hooligans exclaimed, "Whoa, my swing was really, really there today. I made some good, sweet-spot contact and when that happens... good things happen... like 6-8. I could get used to a lot of days like this one."

W. Shaw singled in the 1st, singled in the 2nd, flied out in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, hit a solo-shot off L. Rodríguez in the 6th, hit an RBI double in the 7th, grounded out in the 8th and singled in the 9th.

Shaw is hitting .322 this year with 6 home runs, 26 RBIs and 38 runs scored. He has 83 hits in 258 at-bats, 26 walks and a .399 on-base percentage. Shaw has played in 66 games.

Friday, June 25th, 2038: Ueda Gets 200th Victory
His goal at twenty was to win twenty games one year, pitch until he was thirty, win the league pennant and to make some money. Well, Naofumi Ueda did something even better -- the 33-year-old Colorado Rancheros star has now won 200 games in his career. That put him in a very select group of pitchers.

He joined that exclusive club today at Ballpark of Colorado by whipping the Hartford Harpooners 4-1, holding them to 2 hits in 8.2 innings while chalking up 5 strikeouts and 2 walks.

In the postgame interview, the modest Ueda said, "It's special to win 200 games. You don't do it by yourself. You do it with good stuff and a good bullpen. You are only as good as the guys behind you. Years from now I might look back on it and give myself a little pat on the back."

In his career Ueda has a 200-132 won-lost record with a 3.90 ERA.
