FOOL 2084 Regular Season

The regular season runs in a little under 9 hours! For those that have the day off, I hope they are enjoying their day.

I have some new "Fun awards" for the end of each season that I'll unveil after the season too. I spent several hours this weekend writing up sql scripts that will auto-generate them for me.

List of Fun FOOL awards:

Best bang for the Buck: Hitter and Pitcher that did the most while being paid the least
Worst bang for the Buck: Hitter and Pitcher that were the most overpaid for the production that they had. (Could be highly paid player that only paid average, or could be average paid player that bombed).
Home Run or Nothing award: For the player that had the most Home Runs with the least overall production. Imagine Dave Kingman
Selfish Pitcher award: As Kevin Costner once said, ground balls are democratic. The selfish pitcher is the one who least allowed the rest of his team to participate. Imagine Nolan Ryan as the .500 pitcher that would either strikeout or walk many hitters.
Unluckiest Pitcher award: A pitcher can't record a win all by themselves, they need help. The unluckiest Pitcher is the one that played far better than their record would indicate.
Running on Empty Award: A good basestealer can be a good addition to a team. A bad basestealer on the other hand can actually cost their team runs. This award is for the player that was the most counter-productive to their team's offense thanks to their bad basestealing.
Can't hit his weight award: For the hitter that hit the furthest below or at least closest to his weight.
Should have stayed home award: For the hitter and pitcher that were the furthest below league replacement value for their position during the season. The team would have been better off if the player just didn't show up for the season.
Stone statue award: For the shortstop that best resembled a stone statue in the field.
Cannon-Arm award: For the catcher with the best cannon for an arm on the field this season both in the field and versus stolen base attempts.
Early Checkout award: For the pitcher that left the game on average the earliest.

Many or most of the awards have some minimum apperance requirements of course. None of the awards will be recorded in game, but I'll post the results after each season.

That's terrific. Can't wait to see those.

BTW, Chief Rum is on vacation. So he will be in attendance tonight (before you say Labor Day, my second job is a service job, it isn't taking today off--ergo, the importance of my vacation ).

I've got sangria instead. Way better for a Monday night mood, in my opinion.

If I started drinking alcohol, I'd screw up something and we'd end up with something crazy happening like Hammersmith winning the RL or something.

We can't have THAT happen, now can we. I'll drink some in your honor. My sangria is the best ever though, so it's a little sad you're missing out.

It's not actually me. I wrote complicated computer bot that anticipates every post by the rest of the league, based on an exhaustive study of everyone's post history.

I chose to do that instead of work on my sorry ass team.

That sounds pretty similar to the 6 hours of creating mysql queries that I did for this league over the long weekend!

BTW, don't know if it will improve my pitching any, but I believe this might be the first time I have done this... My entire rotation is composed of five original Hammersmith draft picks, all brought up through the system. They are all in fact still short of their free agency years (although I signed three of them to extensions already to try to help keep arbitration costs down).

RL Selects Rookie Star of the Month
Monday, May 1st, 2084: Hidemichi Aoki earned April's Rookie of the Month honors in the Republic League for last month's performance. The boyish Ann Arbor first baseman might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level.

Aoki hit .290 with 2 home runs, 10 RBIs and 16 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

Continental League Names Rookie of Month
Monday, May 1st, 2084: Gannon Acheson was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 25-year-old left fielder definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen April's Continental League Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting.

In 25 games Acheson batted .280 for Tokyo, slapping 28 hits in 100 at-bats with 5 home runs, drove in 16 runs and scored 15 times.

Loyola Shines in Gem
Friday, May 5th, 2084: A pitcher's main job is to keep the opposition off the scoreboard and Halifax pitcher Martín Loyola did just that today in a 2-0 victory over the Apex Assassins at Assasins Ballpark. He gave up no runs in his start, permitted 3 hits and had 7 strikeouts.

Loyola's record this season is 3-and-3 with no saves and a 3.47 ERA. He has given up 34 hits in 46.2 innings with 33 strikeouts.

Shiu Launches Number 300
Thursday, May 18th, 2084: "I wasn't trying to hit a homer. I just wanted to make contact."
That's what Zuo-lin Shiu told reporters after he made baseball history today at Patriots Place. The prolific slugger belted home run #300 in the Hartford Harpooners 8-5 victory over the Brunswick Barons.

The standout catcher collected 3 hits in 5 at-bats with 3 RBI and 3 runs scored.

"I guess this puts me in baseball's elite," said Shiu. "I don't feel any different. I probably should, but I don't. Still, it is a nice achievement. I did get a little excited, didn't I?"

During his career Shiu has hit for a .278 average and totaled 1826 hits, 301 home runs and 1202 RBIs.

Castro Rips HR Number 300
Friday, May 19th, 2084: Georgia's 5-3 victory over Baltimore was highlighted by Enrique Castro's 300th career home run. His teammates congratulated him at home plate after he circled the bases.

"I didn't see all of them out there," Castro said with a chuckle, "until I rounded third base." He added sheepishly: "It was only a home run. It's not like I won us a World Series!"

In 4 at-bats the Devils left fielder collected 3 hits in his historic game, scored 2 runs, and had 3 RBI.

His lifetime stats show that Castro has hit .291 and connected for 301 home runs.

Cantú in Command, No-Hits Cyclones
Monday, May 29th, 2084: Mario Cantú made quick work of Tokyo at Howler Meadow earlier today. The 22-year-old hurler tossed a no-hitter for the Halifax Winter Wolves in defeating the Cyclones 1-0.

"I really didn't have my best stuff today," he admitted after the game, "there's a lot of luck involved in throwing a no-hitter. Some days it's better to lucky than good."

In a superlative outing he registered 3 strikeouts and 3 walks.

Luck or not, Cantú will go down in history and will get his name written down in the league record book.

In 10 starts this year Cantú has crafted a 3-3 record and a 4.69 ERA.

Cantu's no-hitter means there has been a no-hitter in three straight seasons!

The last time that happened was 1971-1973 when there were two no hitters from Anthony Jones and one from the ageless Palmer White
