This week and the last few have been just ridonkulous for new albums.

Volbeat Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies is very good, excellent in several spots (the quirkier tracks -- which are an integral part of who Volbeat is - unfortunately drag down an otherwise heavy, almost Metallica'esque album)

Stone Sour House of Gold & Bones, Part 2 is incredible. Might just be my new frontrunner for Album of the Year at the moment, at least after one full listen.

Device self-titled debut is very solid, at least if you're a fan of Disturbed. I feared Draiman would go off in some weird direction, instead he basically made the album I would have wanted from Disturbed (and left me not caring one iota which incarnation he's working with).

Drowning Pool Resillience is out today & is their best since the early days.

One of the strongest stretches for new albums releases I can remember in quite a while.

New Besnard Lakes has hit Spotify. Until in Excess, Imperceptible UFO is maybe just a slight notch down from their last 2 full-lengths... but seeing as I consider both of those masterpieces, it's still a damn fine album.

Its definitely been a year of a lot of solid albums without any standouts. I'd say Foxygen is #1 and Besnard Lakes are #2. Traditional Fools, Happy Jawbone Family Band, and FIDLAR are three bands that came flying out of the gates this year with some pretty good garage rock. Kurt Vile's new album would also be near the top of my best of list so far.

It's really a 1-2 list right now with nothing in the 3-5 slots while I wait for the year to shake out.

First sounds from The Winery Dogs (Mike Portnoy, Billy Sheehan, Richie Kotzen). It's definitely rock, although I can't seem to classify it very well beyond that. There's also what I'd consider jazz moments at times although honestly I think Kotzen's vocal is what stands out positively above everything else.

This. "Line of Fire" and "Your Life Your Call" are my favs so far. People may recognize Gonzalez's voice because he recorded a song on the Red Dead soundtrack a few years ago.

Maybe not listening to just quite yet ... but Five Finger Death Punch just debuted their upcoming single on the Golden Gods Awards ... featuring guest vocalist Rob Halford. "Live It Up" damned well killed, but it hurts my heart to see The Metal God appearing heavily reliant on a cane to walk.

edit to add: I doubt this bootleg video will be allowed to stay up long (5FDP seems particularly aggressive in enforcing their copyright on YT) so if you're interested, I'd suggest watching sooner rather than later.

I was saying it was good. Gibson Flying V and Orange amps are classics. The fact that she personalized it by manipulating the letters in Orange was a cool touch.

A lot of time you'll see T.V. performances where they cover up the manufacturer of the amp or guitar to not give free advertisement. This looks like she just did it for fun.

All I know for sure is that I've literally never heard of them before last week which is kinda odd -- I mean, I can at least identify vaguely having heard the names of most acts on the Urban, CHR, Alt and even AAA charts no matter what I think of their work ... but the reaction consists entirely of women over 40 losing their damn minds about a fall concert that you'd think was like a Zeppelin reunion or a live outing by a suddenly healthy Hendrix or something.

Even my wife's FB kinda lit up over this, entirely with 50+ females losing they damned minds.

It is definitely not going to work for everyone but it is one of my top 5 all time.

Jeff Magnum (who is essentially NMH) basically became a hermit and took 15 years off music (for the most part), without any indication that he ever intended to come back (at least as NMH), so to some folks of that age, it pretty much is the equivalent of a Zeppelin reunion.

Yeah, I'm cool with it ... I just don't know that I could come up with a better description of my reaction (which I had sorta predicted up the thread, and figured warranted at least some reference to expectations vs reality).

Biggest surprise for me -- given the reason I asked in the first place -- was that it was more acoustic/less ambient than I was expecting.

Their U.S. 'tour' also consists of a dozen shows, pretty much entirely restricted to the south, with 4 of those 12 being in Georgia, so you just happen to be in exactly the right place and time to be confused by such a thing, as to those certain folks, that actually would be pretty remarkable.

I was extremely excited they're playing in Asheville at a festival with Animal Collective, but its the one weekend when I already have a vacation out of the state planned, my first vacation in almost 3 years. Needless to say I wish I could change my vacation plans. But I can't take a 4 year old to a 3 day music festival (but I can take her to an away game at LsU, evidently).

Ghost (now known as Ghost B.C. in the US, due to legal reasons) put out a new record last month. Personally I don't think it's anywhere close to as consistent as the first one, but it's still got 3-4 good songs....and of course it's still gloriously, ridiculously Satanic.

This vid's been censored, so it's probably technically safe for work.....but I wouldn't want to try and explain it to my boss, or anything:

I hadn't heard about the new record until pretty much right when it dropped, and they put on a great show last time I saw 'em, so when I saw the news I went to check if they were coming to town...which they were, 5 days later. It was an awesome show, but it was at a little bigger place, and it was just a little bit worse...and I realized that I've had that happen pretty consistently with bands that I've seen multiple times. And it's not just related to the hipster formula of enjoyment being inversely related to popularity....like, the place is a little bigger, so the sound is a little bit worse (which seems counter-intuitive, but always seems to be the case), and it's twice as crowded, so you're a little more uncomfortable, and a little further from the stage, and while there are more people there, on the whole they are less excited/passionate, and it's all less of a surprise to you as well. The band can be super tight (which Ghost certainly are) and just as good as every time you've seen them, yet the experience gets a little less enjoyable every time, just because of the environment. None of which is anything close to newsworthy, or even surprising, it was just kind of a minor epiphany/bummer to (very) slowly realize that's kind of the rule of live music, rather than the exception (at least in my experiences).
