Paranoia: Happiness is Mandatory releases next week

I know what I will be doing in just four days.

I will be be happy.. because Happiness is Mandatory!

Friend Computer has signed a licensing deal with Epic Games to release the game November 14th on PC. (I would be unhappy about this, but Friend Computer reminds us in the title that yes, Happiness IS Mandatory)

Paranoia: Happiness Is Mandatory Gameplay | Complete Mission Walkthrough And Impressions - YouTube

The Computer is Happy. The Computer is crazy.

The Computer will help you become happy. This will drive you crazy.

Being a citizen of Alpha Complex is fun. The Computer says so, and The Computer is Your Friend.

Many traitors threaten Alpha Complex.

Many happy citizens live in Alpha Complex. Most happy citizens are crazy.

Which are more dangerous -- Traitors or Happy Citizens?

Rooting out traitors will make you happy. The Computer tells you so.

If you are NOT happy, The Computer will reassign you as reactor shielding.

Being a Troubleshooter is fun. The Computer tells you so.

Do you DOUBT The Computer, citizen?

Troubleshooters get shot at, stabbed, mangled, incinerated, poisoned, blown to bits, and occasionally accidentally executed.

This is so much fun, that many Troubleshooters go crazy.

You work with a team of Troubleshooters. They all carry lasers.

Aren't you glad you have a laser too? Won't this be fun?

STAY ALERT, TRUST NO ONE, KEEP YOUR LASER HANDY!

Combine Real Time (with Pause), with Paranoia's setting (where anything can go wrong, turning in Commies, Mutants, and Secret Society Traitors to face Friend Computer's justice is a good way to advance in Clearance (and everyone is a Mutant, and a member of a Secret Society,) and things are so dangerous that every citizens is granted five extra clones. (Troubleshooters are well known for going through those clones quickly, due to unauthorized friendly fire and being terminated for treason. Some missions in the pen and paper end up with a 600% casualty rate, possibly even before finding out the mission they've been assigned to!

Each character is assigned one of nine clearances, based on how much Friend Computer trusts them to carry out the defense of Alpha Complex, the last bastion of FREEDOM against the Commie Mutant Traitor menace.

Seven of those colors are found in the color palate of a rainbow (Knowing what Rainbows are, is treason). There are two others not visible in a rainbow, but still are an important part of Alpha Complex

(in ascending order)
INFRARED (read Black)
Red
Orange
Yellow
Green
Blue
Indigo
Violet
ULTRAVIOLET (read white)

In general, the higher your clearance, the better off you are. The Infrareds are the proles of Alpha Complex, heavily drugged, assigned all the scut work, and routinely abused. (Not by Friend Computer, of course. Friend Computer would not abuse any loyal citizen. Only Commie Mutant Traitors face Friend Computer's wrath. Such wrath can involve termination.

Everything has a clearance in Alpha Complex. For example, if you are RED, and you are caught trespassing in an ORANGE clearance walkway, Friend Computer will not be happy with you. Too many violations can lead to medication, reprogramming with large spiky bits, demotion, or termination. This leads to interesting (and FUN, right Friend Computer?) dilemmas, such as, "what if the Commie Mutant Traitor is escaping down a corridor that you are not cleared for?"

Running down the corridor is treason.
Letting the traitor escape is treason.
Blowing up the corridor so you can stop the foul traitor without stepping into an area you are not cleared for is, yes, treason.

Aren't these dilemmas FUN?

If I had to throw a mixture of influences that created Paranoia, it would be this:

Take Logan's Run.
Add Catch-22
Throw in 1984
Add a mixture of the Keystone Kops, your average Benny Hill chase scene, Blackaddar, Red Dwarf and the Three stooges.

Then run, because it's likely going to blow up.

I may have to stream this one, in character.

I loved playing Paranoia when I was a kid. That game looks like a worthy simulation.

I never played Paranoia in my D&D days-just seemed way too chaotic a world to have a campaign in. When I was playing Werewolf over at Boardgamegeek, one of the one most popular variants was one set in the Paranoia universe. It seemed like a near perfect combination of the two worlds.

Should I be worried though that a Paranoia game is coming out on my birthday? I will certainly be watching Let's plays to see if its something I want to take a stab at.

That was what I was afraid it was going to be. So glad it is not. I have to find a first person game I can/will play. Turned based (Well, RTS with auto-pause) I can.

Wow. A delay this close to release is not a good sign.

Did anybody end up getting this? It seems to have been released with little fan-fare on Epic.

I read the title of the thread and thought your company was laying people off the week before Christmas.
