Crash for best picture? I thought it was okay, but not Oscar worthy.

Apparently. I thought it was good, but entirely too convoluted and certainly not Best Picture material.

So, you'd agree then. Shrek 2 was the best movie in 2004.

And as usual. I've seen zero of the nominated best picture movies.

...and haven't even heard of two of them.

Is it just me, or have many actresses referred to themselves as an "actor"? If that's the case, shouldn't they compete against the men for Best Actor instead of Best Actress?

WHAT??? Walk the Line doesn't get Best Picture nomination? With a possible sweep of actor and actress, with outstanding music and storyline...how can it not at least garner a nom? Was the direction supposedly that bad? Anyone hear why it didn't make the cut?

At least King Kong didn't get nominated. That would have been dreadful.

I am very disappointed that Walk the Line didn't get nominated for Best Picture and totally agree with you. I feel that Munich was nominated for director/best picture ONLY because it's Steven Spielberg. I know people will argue with that and say it was a great movie, but it just seems that it got thrown in there and isn't well represented in the other big categories. I know Speilberg is amazingly talented but it seems like no matter what he does he gets nominated - are they nominating him or his work?

Walk the Line was a formulaic, predictable biopic. The acting was great, but it was hamstrung by its script. That's my guess as to why it wasn't nominated for best pic.

I don't know about that. I am sure Speilberg gets more attention than most because of his reputation and on the strength of his past work, but I didn't see "War of the Worlds" nominated for best picture. Man, that movie sucked.

No, but it was nominated for sound editing, mixing and visual effects. I know those aren't a "big deal", but it just makes me wonder. That movie was awful, I don't see why it would be nominated for anything if it didn't have the Spielberg name attached to it.

I didn't think War of the Worlds was awful. The ending was bad, but the movie as a whole was not awful. I've seen much worse.

Yep, I think Walk the Line gets snubbed just because Ray was such a short time ago. Definitely think it should be in there over Munich. From the list that is there though, my vote goes to Capote, but I have yet to see Good Night, and Good Luck yet.

Joaquin will not win for best actor either. I think Hoffman gets that one. Reese seems close to a lock for best actress though, seeing as how she's basically swept every other best actress award.

I have no problem with it being nominated in the categories it's nominated in... especially sound. It's fairly common for big budget sci-fi type films to be nominated in the sound/effects categories. I don't think that's necessarily a comment on the quality of the film, but rather a comment on the quality of sound and visual effects. I know several mediocre films have been nominated in the past in these categories, so it's not a big surprise. I do think being a Spielberg movie probably helped them get nominated here.

I am really surprised that Cinderella Man didn't make the list for best picture and that Russell Crowe didn't get a nomination. I thought that was a great movie and it wasn't exactly a subject that I was previously interested in.

Biggest joke (among films that I have seen) is William Hurt getting nominated for a History of Violence. He was alright, but he was only in the movie for like 7 or 8 minutes. And it wasn't like a Marlon Brando/Apocolypse Now-type 7-8 minutes. If someone would ask me about that movie, I wouldn't even have remembered that he was in it.

Heh, my favorite surprise from the nominations was Hurt being up for Supporting Actor. I didn't expect it, but I love the pick. I though he was great in the short amount of time he was on there. The fumbling key scene was classic.

Didn't expect to see him nominated though just because it was such a small part.

There are tons of Spielberg films that didn't get nominated. This is his first nomination of the decade, and only his third nomination since 1987. Munich got nominated because it was a great movie that brought up some challenging issues.

Walk the Line was a completely unimaginative movie that didn't even attempt to do anything original. It was a shame that such a unique performer as Johnny Cash got such a bland movie made about him.

The screenplay for Walk the Line was based almost exclusively on autobiographies written by Cash. The fact that he was willing to show an accurate portrayal of himself, warts and all, is quite unique, IMO.

I'd *like* to see David Strathairn win, but I doubt he will. For two reasons:

A). He's a great actor who still lingers in the shadows, and

B). I like to see the cotninued success of actors and actresses from the movie Matewan.

You'd never see a film about hot lesbians get nominated, that's for sure. That's really what the people want.

So an ex-"Dawson's Creek" actress got an Oscar nomination, and it wasn't the one who received the most attention last year...

Agreed. Phoenix will not win for Best Actor, and I don't think Witherspoon will win for Best Actress. I do have a question for those of you who believe that Walk the Line should have been nominated for Best Picture over Munich. Have you seen both movies, or just Walk the Line? I saw them both and I thought Munich was the 2nd best movie of 05.

I would've liked to see History of Violence, Syrnia, or Match Point in there instead of Munich. I liked Munich, but it just doesn't fit in with the rest, I don't think it's the same league. I found it extremely heavy-handed, and rivalling Crash in it's lack of subtlety. Not picture of the year material.

I loved Walk the Line, but I'm a huge Johnny Cash fan and biased. I can see how it wouldn't be nominated, but I hate seeing Munich in there. I do however think Reese deserves the win for actress, and also feel there isn't a lot of competition.

The actor race is a lot tougher, I still like Hoffman over Ledger, but I'm not sure that's how it will play out.

You have to pull for Miyazaki in animated also, that's a given.
