Wedding Wear

Heading to a wedding next weekend, and, like usual, unclear on what level of formality the suggested attire rises to. A 4 p.m. "Summer Semiformal" wedding in Virginia. Seersucker OK?

Almost 15 minutes and still no "Weeding Wear" parody thread. Color me surprised.

And most of the responses seemed geared toward "semiformal" as opposed to "summer semiformal".

I think summer semiformal is dress slacks and a nice short sleeve shirt.

Hmmm. Looking it up online it would suggest I'm wrong. Dress suit is summer semiformal? Ok ... whatever ...

I would do slacks, shirt and a tie, no jacket. Beter to be a little overdresed than underdressed and you can always lose the tie.

I think Lathum is right. The "summer" part means don't worry about a jacket.

I'd probably show in in dark jeans, nice shirt, blazer, no tie, but I usually under-dress, so..

Blazer with slacks or summer suit like a seer sucker or cotton. I'd wear a tie.

I did blazer+slacks at the summer wedding I went to last month and I was conspicuously underdressed (as in the only guy not in a suit), although I looked good anyways, so I was just like "fuckit!"

Wouldn't the very definition of semiformal be "no tie"? That would seem to me to be a key differentiator between "semiformal" and "formal". Whenever I see "semiformal", I wear dockers and a polo.

I'm thinking that you should wear nice pants, and a shirt + tie. I'd also pack a polo, just in case you think you can pull that off for the reception.

You should wear a sportcoat or jacket, but not be worried whether it's a suit versus separates. You should wear a tie to the wedding itself. Be prepared to lose both items if it appears you are uncomfortably over the mark for the close guests in your age group.

Seersucker is fine if you are among the roughly fourth of the male population that can pull it off without looking ridiculous. You'll have to make the call there.

It is just far better to be overdressed and loosen up than to arrive dressed too casually and feel uncomfortable as a result. Play it smart. Chicks and wanton bridesmaids tend to dig the overdressed guy, anyway.

Semiformal usually means a suit, but I imagine it varies greatly by region.

I don't think it is ever appropriate to wear jeans to a wedding, especialy if the dress is semi formal

I define it as no jacket/ suit. I always wear a tie and can lose it to go to a button down if need be

I think it varies by region as well.

The bottom line is I am likely going to dress how my wife tells me to.

What about the jacket instead of the tie?

of course you can just lose the jacket as well, I just think it is an unneeded layer.

I also think it depends on two things:

1) Will this be an open bar reception?

2) How hot and loose will the ladies be?

Yea, in hindsight, I don't even know what the hell semi-formal is. I should have abstained.

I always make it easy for myself: Any invitation that isn't listed as "casual" dress gets returned as "decline invitation". I'm not busting out my moves on the dance floor in office meeting gear.

That isn't the point. The people whos wedding it is specificaly requested the attendees dress a certain way and thos wishes should be respected.

Got married outdoors in New Orleans in summer a couple years ago. Linen is your friend. And for god sakes, wear a tie.

P.S. Seersucker would work just as well. But wear the goddamn tie. It's one night.

The point is, they aren't going to care at the end of the day. Trust me I know, I got married, have tons of pictures and have never once questioned or thought about what anyone was wearing at my wedding.

Not the point though I feel the same way as you do regarding my wedding.

But the reason you should dress is respect for your friends.

To me, semi-formal means suit w/tie, but not tuxedo.

Call me old fashioned, but suit, collared shirt and tie is usually the standard unless you're told specifically what you should or should not wear.

Oh, and as an aside, I am firmly against the bow-tie style that has become more and more popular lately.

oh, ok, I guess you are the defacto expert because you had a wedding. I guess you just don't see the point that is is respectful to the couple who specifically requested a type of dress on the invitation. Hell, you could show up in a bathing suit, I doubt it would ruin their day.

That really wasn't the point I'm making. Mainly I was trying to say don't over think it. Wearing a bathing suit would be idiotic.

One might say it would be idiotic to not respect the wishes of the couple getting married

semiformal is black tie. formal is white tie. summer in front of the semiformal and it being during the day means you can dress it down - still need a tie. I agree with QS - much better to be a little overdressed than worst dressed.
