1856 Off-season Thread
Monday I'll sim to the start of FA.
Also, the draft pool will come from a new feeder league called STREP starting this upcoming year. Essentially it means that you get to start scouting guys you want to draft years in advance since it's setup as a "college" league, but the ages start earlier than that. The draft will be fed entirely with guys from this league starting this year. You'll be able to see it in the latest version of the file that goes up on Monday. I've tested it prior to adding it, to make sure that it did what it's supposed to do and that the players who come out of it aren't super human. It's a nice touch that I think will just add to the immersion factor as we go forward. |

20 TO WATCH IN '56
The coolest part of the feeder league situation is how we're now able to track a player's ascent from a young age. One of these years, we're gonna see a kid who we start tracking at 14 and think "shit, this guy is good. Anyway we can get him to leave early?"
The team names weren't as important down there. For a location, I debated this way longer than I should've. But ultimately, decided that the four states without traditional HS baseball ought to host our teams. (Iowa does, but it's in the summer not the spring. South Dakota has HS baseball but it's not sanctioned by the state association yet. Montana and Wyoming don't have any HS baseball at all. It's all Legion ball.) Anyway...I've decided to wade down to those leagues and to get familiar with the potential guys who we'll be drafting this June. The trick to scouting in this league is that there's no way besides just looking at the whole list to tell who the best prospects are, since the game uses "Top players" to determine who the best guys are right now, except those guys aren't necessarily great prospects. Here are some of the notables to look out for in this next draft year, plus a few others who won't be eligible this year but worth adding to your future draft lists. These guys (and their league) is now available for download online, as well as in the HTML. The draft eligible age for these guys is going to be 19. We'll lower it to 18 if there's a year where we don't have enough 19 to fill at least 10 rounds (the draft is set for 15 for next year...that's all we need to fill out minors in a league like this...) AMARI GRAY, SP, BILLINGS Age: 19 POT: 74 The good news? He's 19 and will turn 20 by the draft. Strong armed lefty with two pitches. Bad news? He only has two pitches. Still, his projections are off-the-charts and if he pans out, he'd still be a viable starter as he's got workhorse endurance to go with the ability to locate those pitches, throw hard and tip-top control. CARLOS PALACIOS, OF, SPEARFISH Age: 19 POT: 74 A five-tool lefty out of the Dominican, this kid will hit for average, has some pop in his bat and boasts a cannon too. Surely a Top 5 pick in the upcoming draft. Only thing that'd make him more valuable would be to move him from the outfield to more scarce position if he can manage the transition. Note to future drafting teams! JIMMY SPEEGLE, SS, HELENA Age: 19 POT: 74 Gentleman, meet the future A-Rod of SLOP. This kid has power, can field the position well (though I'd surely train him for 2nd base) and can run the basepaths too. Like the guys above, he's hardly major league ready yet, but...in a few years, we'll be hearing his name often. Mark it down now. GEOFF LONG, SP, MINNEHAHA Age: 14 POT: 71 You can look, but you can't touch boys. Sorry, but he'll only be 15 on draft day. So you have a few years on this one. But...his potential is off the charts. Throws two pitches well and if you were feeling really ambitious, you could convert him to an outfield; since he can play both. You have to think he's going to develop a 3rd pitch one of these years and when he does..well...I think he'll be topping your draft boards coming around '59 or so. MANNY DAMIAN, 1B, AMES Age: 19 POT: 70 He's a heck of a potential hitter. But he's doesn't have a position. I have a strong feeling someone will find a use for him, though. You can't teach talent and this kid has it in spades. HR Power Potential (105) and Contact Potential (93) indicate that he's a guy you'll need to find a spot for in your future lineups... ANDRE KNOX, OF, MINNEHAHA Age: 18 POT: 70 A strong fielder with power potential, as well as speed. This Jamaican track star will prove useful to your squads in a bevy of ways. It'll be interesting to see how he hits D-League pitching, as I feel like that'll really determine how how he gets drafted come June. He makes the age cutoff, which is the only reason we're not having to wait another year for him. OTHER NOTABLES ELIGIBLES: (aka, I'm too lazy to take their pictures, but at least you can go search for them now...) 19 YR OLDS SP Alex Aguilera, Cheyenne (POT: 68) RF Josh Allen, Sioux City (POT: 68) SP Jimmy Perkins, Des Moines (POT: 63) SP Chris Ricardo, Roundup (POT: 68) 3B Nate Fields, Sioux Falls (POT: 57) OTHER DRAFT ELIGIBLE 18 YR OLDS SP Diego Carrasco, Cheyenne (POT: 69) CF Fred Bishop, Gillette (POT: 68) FUTURE PROSPECTS (Draft eligibility based on birthdays) SP Ernie Hanlon, Sioux Falls (POT: 69) Age: 17 Draft Eligible: '58 SP Ethan Hyatt, Cheyenne (POT: 68) Age: 16 Draft Eligible '58 SP Miguel Jimenez, Great Falls (POT: 68) Age: 15 Draft Eligible: '59 SP Jae Lee, Roundup (POT: 68) Age: 15 Draft Eligible: '59 LF Jimmy Ziegler, Casper (POT: 68) Age: 16 Draft Eligible: '58 LF R.J. Conlon, Des Moines (POT: 63) Age: 17 Draft Eligible: '58 SP Tony Llamas, Laramie (POT: 63) Age: 14 Draft Eligible: '60 CF J.J. Both in-game and HTML. I put a file up yesterday with it in there (game date didn't change, exports before and after are safe)

I just released a crap-load of horrible minor league players. We don't have to field full rosters at each level, do we?

Certainly not. Ghost players are turned on. You only have to field anyone useful and no more than that.

I see that Brooklyn re-signed Bo Fisher to a 5 year deal worth $62.5 million during the pre-FA period. Nice work, since I bet that he'd have gotten a lot more than that on the open market. Chicago sewed up CL Bob McCann at nearly $30m over 3 years too.
Should be interesting to see what everyone else decides. |

FA1 is done. I'm uploading the file right now and will let you know when it's done. But here are the signings that happened during this period:
Quote:
Winnemucca got an owner who spends as much as the former owner (Me, hah) used to like to do. Good to see! Especially stealing Sheehan from a league rival for gigantic bucks. Getting Nieto to go with him? Absolutely bonkers. Watch out for the Choos! Last edited by Young Drachma : 08-07-2012 at 10:09 PM. |

Ok, FA1 file is up. We'll do FA2 tomorrow night. Come correct, your favourite player is probably going to sign a deal after tomorrow night's stage.

Holy crap.... I'm not used to having to come in stronger than the players' demands.
I thought for sure I'd be sitting pretty with some stud SP's today . BTW - is the HTML up to date? |

Yeah son, this ain't FOBL. No frugalniks in fast-sim. No real incentive to be. And no, I haven't updated it yet. But I will here this morning.
