FOFC Hearthstone Tournament Signup

As discussed in the Hearthstone thread, we are putting together a fun (no prizes) Hearthstone Basic/Common card only tournament for FOFCers.

Rules:

- Everyone has to have their account on the same region. Since we primarily are NA, it needs to be that region. (you can't play games across regions).

- I'll need people's battle tag IDs for us to arrange the head to head matchups for the tournament pairings. If you don't want to publicly post your ID, you can send it to my inbox, and we will keep it between us and your opponent(s) for the tournament.

-To keep it easy, we will do this one as just a Best of 3 Single elimination tournament. In each round, the first person to win 2 games moves on to the next round.

-We won't do any type of hero restrictions on loss, between matches you can keep the same hero for the next game, or you can change to a different hero to play.

-The only deck restrictions we will have is Common and Basic cards only. No Rare (Blue), Epic (Purple) or Legendary (Orange) for this one.

Tournament Bracket:

The tournament bracket will be posted here once signups are closed. With a larger field, it will be a standard single elimination tournament bracket. If smaller number of signups, we will start with a round robin into a small single elimination bracket.

The seedings will be done entirely by random.org based on signup list number.

Schedule:

Each round/matchup will be held over a three day period to allow each player to have the time to coordinate when they will play against their opponent. The schedule for the tournament will be as follows:

- Sunday (12:00 noon EST) through Wednesday (12:00 noon EST): Matchup 1
- Wednesday (12:01pm EST) through Saturday (12:00 noon EST): Matchup 2
- Saturday (12:01pm EST) through Sunday (12:00 noon EST): No matches scheduled

Reporting Results:

The results of each match will be handled by the individual players. In agreement they will send them to me via PM once the matches have been completed.

Signups:

Please sign up with your battlenet ID # as that is necessary for matchmaking. All matches are done via friendly matchmaking in hearthstone friendslist.

Ideally, would like to try to have signups done in time to start off next Sunday, but that depends on how quickly we get folks in this thread. I will post (and edit the thread title) with the signup cut off time when that becomes more certain.

Ok, going to close up the signups and make the bracket.

With 6 people, we will do a short round robin in two 3-person groups to determine seeding as the #1 seed from each group will end up with a first round bye. Using random.org it came back with:

5 3 4 6 2 1

Current Standings: Series won-loss (number of game losses for tiebreaker)

Group A:
Barkeep 2-0 (1)
Vince 1-1 (2)
Lathum 0-2 (4)

Group B:
AlanT 2-0 (1)
Cschex 1-1 (3)
Cmgdodgers 0-2 (4)

The three people in Pool A will play each other this week and the three people in Pool B will play each other this week to determine seeding.

ie: Vince and Lathum will play a best of 3 series, Lathum and Barkeep will play a best of 3 series and Vince and Barkeep will play a best of 3 series.

Based on those games, the three will be seeded A#1, A#2, A#3
Tiebreakers will be:
# of series wins
Direct Head to Head
Least # of game losses across all series
Random.org

Once the round robin is complete, the teams will be seeded for the tournament and the brackets will be:

Game #1: Pool A #3 seed vs Pool B #2 seed
Game #2: Pool B #3 seed vs Pool A #2 seed
Game #3: Winner of Game #1 vs Pool A #1 seed
Game #4: Winner of Game #2 vs Pool B #1 seed
Game #5: Winner of Game #3 vs Winner of Game #4

It's actually pretty fun to go back and build decks without so many staples - not even Legendaries, but rares are the backbone of so many deckbuilds.

I don't know about this - I haven't touched the game since before Naxx came out. I only have a handful of cards that aren't basic that are allowed in our decks. Should be a fun and interesting time, that's for sure.

Edit: Barkeep and I are trying to get our matches in tomorrow evening around 9 Eastern, maybe we can all just shoot to play around that time and rotate through?

So having played some with these rules it's interesting. Most of the decks I enjoy are designed to win by 8 mana or so. These games definitely develop slower though. I do think there is still an ability to have a variety of different decks and styles though which has been nice.

Yeah, I was watching a game between Lathum and Barkeep for a few rounds until I realized I was essentially seeing his deck as he played, which seemed like an unfair advantage.

Sprain not a break for my mom, so that's good news. Unfortunately, my availability is pretty crappy the rest of the week. Busy tonight, I have a window from about 8 EST to 9:30 EST on Thursday, but I work from 5 PM - 1 AM EST Friday night. I'm free Saturday morning until 5 PM EST, but booked all of Sunday.

Glad your Mom is ok, I can be available Thursday night around that time, barring anything unforseen happening. Saturday AM is possible, but tricky.

Yes, probably for fair play we shouldn't spectate each other when they are playing these tournament games at least as it could give an unfair knowledge about what they may face in their decks. Once eliminated in the tournament stage it probably is not a big deal though, I assume no one is going to tell others what they may face.

I'm looking forward to my games, playing cschex tonight and cmgdodgers tomorrow night. I feel like I am an ok player, but both of these guys are likely better than me. (I know I have gotten plenty of pointers from cschex about arena stuff). With hearthstone though, if I get a lucky draw I think I can hang in there though and pull out a win or two I hope!

I have not played with my decks that I put together for this that much so am interested in seeing how they work. I think it was pretty fun going through the library and putting in cards that I have not used in a while or maybe even ever just to fit in holes for my decks. Without the rare/epic/legendary cards, I am missing win conditions on most things I play, so as barkeep said will be quite a different style of playing. Maybe really similar to arena games.

I think we're just waiting on 2 series + 1 game .

Lathum v Vince
cschex v cmgdodgers
Barkeep v Vince (1 game)

Once those are all done, I'll work on updating the tourney brackets with the results. Hopefully we can finish off these games this week and start the next round next week!

So far the scores in have been:

Barkeep 2 vs Lathum 0
AlanT 2 vs Cschex 0
AlanT 2 vs Cmgdodgers 1
Cschex 2 vs Cmgdodgers 1

I have in progress:

Barkeep 1 vs Vince 1

Still yet to play:

Lathum vs Vince

I have updated the tourney bracket with the current standings and what seedings would be if things stand as is. Obviously the two remaining series in Pool A can shake things up a bit though.

Edit: HERE is the post with the updated tourney bracket

Yeah, my schedule's tough regularly, and a golf tournament today (which I won, hooray) has made it difficult. I'm off all day tomorrow, but I lead a Warcraft raid from 6-9 PST. I'm free Tuesday night after about 5:30 PST.

If I'm not around, it's because I'm getting dinner.

I know that I've been the bummer for scheduling purposes. If we want to hang an 0-fer on me against Lathum and get the knockout phase underway, I'm totally ok with that.

Tomorrow I've got a short window before my raid from 5-6 PST. I can probably be a little late to the raid if necessary, but I will have 12 other people waiting on me. If not tomorrow, Saturday morning or Sunday will probably be best - going to the Bob Seger concert Thursday and I work from 2-10 Pacific on Friday and Saturday night.

I chatted with him day before yesterday. This is in no way an attempt to throw him under the bus, but his schedule really keeps us from hooking up. He has a combination of work/ raids/ social events that are keeping him busy. The time change doesnt help either.

I think Alan needs to make a ruling. Either give Vince the forfiet due to scheduling issues, or I am willing to take it due to the fact Barkeep crushed me and Vince won a game from him.

I think the next time we can play would be Monday, and I'm not certain that works for him.

Let's say that if we can't get it done by Sunday evening, call it a forfeit on my end. I'll take the lower seed in the elimination format. If you've got a specific time on Sunday that works, let me know and I'll block it off on my end. Otherwise just shout at me.

Looks like Lathum and I are going to get our games in here in a few minutes. Thanks for your patience, everyone else.

Edit:

In two close matches (better card draw on the first game and I was toast for sure), I got by Lathum 2-0. On to the elimination round!

Ok great! So the next round matchups are set!

Lathum vs. Cschex
Vince vs. Cmgdodgers

I'll send out messages to everyone also to make sure they are seen.
