Simpsons Fans - Seasons 1 & 2 Boxed Sets Worth it?

I love the Simpsons. I'm nowhere near as dedicated as some of the hardcore fans who can quote almost every episode but I do try to catch the new shows and reruns if I'm home. Unfortunately, I don't know the series well enough to remember what the differences were in each season. I read some reviews of the Simpsons Seasons 1 & 2 DVD sets on Amazon.Com and decided to go with Season 3 instead as my first Simpsons boxed set. Do you recommend Season 1 & 2 as well? I remember the Simpsons as getting better as the show went on and the middle of the series as being the best. Any recommendations?

The first seasons are still damn funny, though. Homer is voiced by a different actor, which is entertaining.

The end of season 3 is where it really hits its stride. The last episode of season 3 (Homer's brother, voiced by Danny DeVito) is produced by Conan O' Brien. From that point til around '98/'99, it was fannntastic.

Homer in season 1 wasn't voiced by a different actor, he was just using a different voice. In some of the episodes, you can hear him using old Homer's voice (the Halloween one with Homer cloning himself, he says "Let's all go out for frosty chocolate milkshakes!").

Yes, buy all Simpsons DVD's if for no other reason than nostalgia. Season 3 is the best of the ones out right now.

I have Season 2, and I think the commentary is worth it. They say some interesting and funny stuff in the commentary.. plus you get all of the episodes! I'm not sure about Season 1's episodes.. but I might get it to hear what they say on the commentary.

Well a lot of season 1 is not that great in my opinion, but I've found them worthwhile, but hey, I'm a huge fan. Season 2 I think is worth getting, there are some pretty good episodes on it. Plus it's interesting to compare the very family-oriented style of episodes in the early going to the "wacky adventures" style of show many years down the road.

Yeah, I enjoy some of the commentaries in Season 3. I may be the only Simpsons fan not to know this, but I never realized that was actually Michael Jackson doing the voice for the crazy guy who thinks he's Michael Jackson in the episode where Homer gets committed. Jackson isn't credited, I always thought it was an MJ impersonator. According to the commentary, there was a an MJ impersonator singing the songs but Jackson called them up and wanted to be on the show as long as he could have a scene with Bart. I guess the commentary was done before Jackson's second incident with the law because I thought it was *wink* *wink* interesting that he specifically wanted to guest star with the boy in the show.
