I feel bad for Bills fans. I think Jets fans and Ryan were perfect for each other. Was defense really the problem in buffalo?

His FA tour was about as drama free as he could make it.

I'm guessing if he does, it will be a week or so after the Super Bowl.

Here's a crazy offseason prediction:

Chip Kelly comes close to pulling the trigger on a massive trade up to get Mariotta, but gets overruled by Loria. Instead, he gets Manziel from Cleveland for a whole lot less. A few years back, he had Manziel going to Oregon and didn't offer Mariotta until Manziel changed his mind and went to A&M.

Lurie. Loria is the asshole who fucked over Montreal.

And, no. Chip Kelly is smart enough to realize Manziel is not an NFL QB.

No finding a coach willing to coach the team seemed to be the key requirement.

I think Mariota has the tools to be a big time NFL player. I was watching some film breakdown show and they were showing what all he was responsible for on the field.

On one play: first he would read the line to see if he should hand it to the RB, if not he would swing left to see if a WR screen was there, if not he would swing right to see if a WR screen was available there, if not he would take off down the line to run the ball and if he was cut off he still had the option to pitch to one WR while another headed up the field to block. This was all after the snap.

It had my head spinning.

Fox had a loaded manning team and went 1 and done 2 of 3 years. It's impossible to say if he's a good coach cause even Dave Shula would have done similarly

Did you see how weak Manning's arm looked yesterday? How badly his timing was off even on short throws? How is that John Fox's fault?

He did nearly lead Carolina to a Super Bowl win, but Vinateri kicked a last second FG. This was two seasons after they went 1-15.

Then there's the fact that Manning isn't exactly a clutch player in the playoffs. Whether it be Mora or Dungy or Caldwell or Fox. When exactly does the blame get laid at Manning's feet for his latest post-season implosion?

Yeah I'm not sure the Carolina years were chock full of talent either. Jake Delhomme ffs.

Great opportunity for the G-men to pick him back up, lead the defense for a season, then take over for Coughlin (I think this is Coughlins last year regardless of what happens, personally).

Denver released the whole coaching staff. Glad Denver has replaced the 49ers at the top of the "dysfunctional organization" flagpole.

If they promote Gase, then that is essentially what they're doing. This just feels like the NBA where the star player runs the coach out of town. Unfortunately, it rarely works out too well.

Maybe Manning has told them he's retiring? But it seems like that would be the wrong time to introduce anarchy into the organization.

I hear Marc Trestman is available!

According to Ian Rappaport (who is pretty close to Jeddy Boy York), looks like Gase is the 49ers' favorite candidate and they are trying to get him in for a second interview tonight. This may happen quickly.

Enjoy he is nothing special. He had a horrible game plan yesterday and deserved to be fired as did the rest of this coaching staff. We can do better elsewhere.

Agreed but also think he is basically Jeff Fisher so what ever someone thinks of Fisher applies here. They are good coaches but not great.

Funny comment I saw under one of the Fox articles mentioning "bring back Shanahan and Cutler".

I do wonder about the Shanahan angle possibly. Why else would you can Fox unless you already know who you want?

Give them a couple years of 3-13 then see how 'in line' with it they are.

Kubiak just said earlier he was staying in Baltimore.

A couple general thoughts on this (and the 49ers struggles in whole):

(1) Generally, picking a head coach is as much of a crapshoot as the draft. The Patriots took heat when selecting Belichek and the Dolphins thought they were getting a savior with Saban. Gase likely has a 50-50 shot of succeeding if he's the guy, especially with the caliber of defense he will inherit;

(2) I would be careful about killing Gase on his gameplan for two reasons. First, as limited as Manning was, it's really difficult to build a successful gameplan on that especially if he looked much, much better in practice. It's easy to say, "well just run the damn ball more" when the Colts are putting 9/10 in the box and squatting on receiver routes because they know Manning can't throw more than 20 yards deep. Second, it's difficult to know how much of the gameplan was made at the direction of Fox who is known to be ultra-conservative. Remember, in most situations, the role between the HC and OC is that the HC calls run or pass, and the OC is supposed to pick the chosen run or pass more likely to succeed in that situation;

(3) I feel more confident in criticizing the Harbaugh/Roman offensive strategy because it is clear they made some poor choices in training camp in instituting their plan and carried that through the regular season. Harbaugh/Roman, perhaps with pressure from the front offense, were determine to turn the 49ers into an "air-it-out" philosophy but they did not have the personnel to do it. The only game which the 49ers had any consistent offensive success was in the Chargers game late in the season, when they ironically went back to the run option/single back set up that worked for them so well in years past. Conversely, the Broncos had numerous games this year where they were lights out. Remember that 49ers' Sunday night game for Peyton's record? Then, Peyton got injured and it's pretty easy to compare the downfall in overall offensive production with his injury. Nevertheless, the Broncos changed their whole offensive strategy on the fly mid-season and had consistent success with it. That tells me a lot about their coaching staff, after going through the Harbaugh/Roman experience this past year.

Overall, however, you simply can't be confident in the Broncos' plan letting everyone go for a bad performance where Peyton was injured. Similarly, I don't care who the 49ers get, or how bad Harbaugh/Roman are, whether the next guy they get is good is simply a crapshoot. I would much rather be in the New York Giants/Pittsburgh Steelers position than the 49ers or Broncos at this point, due to head coach stability.

Maybe or maybe not. It depends on who they hire. More intriguing question: Could Peyton ask the Broncos for his release and pursue a starting position elsewhere? If so, where would be a good fit?

I guess the confusing thing to me about Denver, is, essentially, they fired their coach because Manning does what Manning almost always does in the playoffs. Which is choke.

What exactly did Denver think they were getting there?
