EHM 2005: My (long) Journey to the NHL

After installing the Unfaking update for EHM, I decided to start over, this time in one of the lower North American leagues. I'm taking over the Motor City Mechanics in the United Hockey League which is the worst playable NA league in the game. I picked this team based on some familiar names including Brent Gretzky and the fact I had to hire most of my staff, which gave me the opportunity to create a blueprint for the organization right away.

I have already played through training camp where I brought in enough players from Canadian colleges to fill out two teams. I chose the CIS to get some hidden gems because all of these players have used their Junior eligibility and gone through the NHL draft undrafted. I also go to University in Canada, so I am familiar with some of the players. I scheduled an exhibition tour of some University teams as well to see if any players stand out against my team. I have played exhibitions against UHL teams, and have not started the tour.

Once I get through this introduction phase, the dynasty will be run through Press Conferences and Articles. My ultimate goal is to coach Team Canada, but my first goal will be to get a GM job in the NHL. The career path I would ideally like to take is UHL-AHL-NHL but I realize I might have to go through the ECHL first.

What I did to the team

When I took over, I had a trainer with a 20 in physical therapy, an assistant coach I'd keep on for now, and a player-coach. I wanted to get an assistant GM, a head coach and a few assistant coaches to round out the staff and a scout or two.

I also started looking over CIS teams for guys I knew could make an impact.

The assistant GM I hired was Ross Mahoney who has great evaluation ratings and is someone I can see myself taking along with me from job to job if I need to. My head coach, after several misses, is former NHL goaltender and ESPN analyst Darren Pang. Peter Howe and Mike Price were taken on as assistant coaches while Doug Howe and Andy Wilson were hired as scouts, with Howe being the head scout.

I also signed three players. Philippe Seguin is 21 years old and is coming off a career in the QMJHL. He seems like a solid defenseman and will probably be the number 4-6 guy. Luke Sellars is also a defenseman and has 1 game in the NHL with the Atlanta Thrashers. He is 24 years old and will be one of the team's top defensemen. After a very solid performance in training camp, Bruno Champagne was added to the roster. He is also coming off a career in the QMJHL and one season at Concordia University. He was the best player in camp scrimmages and performed very well in exhibition games against other UHL teams.

Mechanics school Canadian Universities

It wasn't the tour they expected when they left Michigan, but at least the Mechanics didn't lose. Despite outscoring their opponents 12-4, they managed to go 2-0-2 playing schools from Canadian Universities.

They opened the tour with a 1-1 tie against Concordia in Rod Branch's first action of the preseason. Branch made 23 saves on 24 shots in the win. Motor City's goal was scored by Kris Vernarsky.

They won their next game 5-0 against Acadia. Branch made 23 saves for the shutout while Chris Gignac scored two goals and added an assist. Julian Smith, Adam Edinger and Scott Dobben had Motor City's other goals.

The team had trouble beating a familiar face in their next game. They tied McGill 2-2. The Redmen had goaltender Mathieu Poitras in goal who played two exhibition games for the Mechanics earlier this preseason. Bill Ruggiero, who will start the season as the backup, made 19 saves on 21 shots. Konstantin Kalmikov and Peter Szabo scored for the Mechanics.

The Ottawa Gee-Gees were no match for the Mechanics as Motor City won 4-1. Ruggiero made 19 saves and Konstantin Kalmikov had a goal and an assist in the win. Kris Vernarsky scored on a penalty shot while Greg Bullock and Scott Dobben scored the remaining goals.

The roster, which is now at 23 men, will have to be reduced to 20 by the end of the week. It is expected the team will release two defencemen and a forward.

Mechanics cut four, sign one

The Motor City Mechanics finalized their 20-man roster today releasing four players. Defencemen Henry Acres and Chris Wismer and forwards Josh Fey and Peter Szabo were released by general manager Jared Book while he announced the signing of forward Steve Saviano to a two-year deal worth $40,000 per year. Saviano, 24, played in the AHL and ECHL in his career and he will find a spot on the right wing of the first line.

"Steve has a lot of experience," Book said, "and something we really like is his versatility. He can play all three forward positions."

The Mechanics' salary total currently sits at $500,000. The UHL's salary cap is $574,964.

How good are these guys?

With the 20-man roster announced earlier today by rookie GM Jared Book, it is worth considering what this team's chances are.

Right now I consider them the 3rd best team in the league behind Danbury and Rockford. They are a solid bet to make the playoffs and I really like what the new guy has done with this team.

Rod Branch is the fourth-best goaltender in the league and if he can get hot, there's no telling how far this team can go. A solid goaltender is essential to a team in this league.

Newcomer Chris Bogas was named captain and has the potential to make a very big impact for this team. He is one of the top-three defencemen in the league, no doubt about it. Phillipe Seguin is also a very solid PP QB and it will be fun to watch him develop.

Kris Vernarsky has played in the AHL and NHL, and is the team's best player, and will be fun to watch. He is the best centre in the league, and will be even better defensively than he is offensively. Enjoy watching him while you can because he may only be here for a year.

I think they will make the playoffs, but only time will tell, right?

Just some information about the UHL's structure and playoff criteria.

They play 76 games and there are 14 teams in the league. There are three divisions, one with four teams and two with five teams. Motor City is in the Central Division with Muskegon, Kalamazoo, Flint and Port Huron.

The top two teams in each division qualify for the playoffs. I am not 100% on the playoff format right now.

BIG NEWS:

After the win, I get contacted by the Manitoba Moose of the AHL for their vacant GM position and they offer me the job. I didn't expect anything to happen this fast, and although the choice is obvious, it feels wierd leaving the Mechanics right when they are starting to win. But, the next challenge has arisen, and I accept the offer.

I am now a part of the Manitoba Moose, farm team of the Vancouver Canucks.

I didn't expect anything to happen this fast, and although the choice is obvious, it feels wierd leaving the Mechanics right when they are starting to win. But, the next challenge has arisen, and I accept the offer. I am now a part of the Manitoba Moose, farm team of the Vancouver Canucks.
