EHM 05: Here I am .. Rock Me Like a Hurricane: Year 2
Year 1: We are the worst team in the NHL but we make some news by hiring Wayne Gretzky as our new coach and getting a steal in Phil Kessel in the 2nd round of the NHL draft.

2006-07 CAROLINA HURRICANES ROSTER
Goalies 1. Cam Ward 2. Martin Gerber Ward is the #1 this year, no questions asked. He's improved a lot since last year, and should be ready for a big year, because chances are we'll need him because we're still nowhere we're near where we want to be as a club yet (NHL Preseason #26) but he can win us some games. Martin Gerber provides a solid veteran backup for us to rely on incase Ward slumps or gets hurt, so we're not too worried in net. Defense 1. Dick Tarnstrom 2. Andrew Hutchinson 3. Aaron Ward 4. Jack Johnson 5. Tim Gleason 6. Oleg Tverdovsky We'll look to Danny Richmond in Lowell as our 7th D but for now we're satisfied with what we have. Tarnstrom anchors the point with Hutchinson, who had a surprising rookie season and we hope he can build off of it. Jack Johnson is our future and he'll see a lot of time with Oleg Tverdovsky, our 2nd best defensemen. Gleason and Ward bring up the third pairing. We have a good mix of power and speed and we're hoping we don't need to shake up this D right now, because we want to keep it as it is until guys like Vojuta and Maximkin are ready. Forwards 1. Erik Cole 2. Andrew Ladd 3. Niklas Nordgren 4. Cory Stillman 5. Ray Whitney 6. Jason Allison 7. Rob Brind'amour 8. Matt Cullen 9. Phil Kessel 10. Erik Staal 11. Josef Vasicek 12. Pavel Brendl 13. Jordin Tootoo 14. Radim Vrbata 15. Justin Williams Ladd and Kessel, two rookies, will play between Rob Brind'amour on our second line. Both played well in the pre-season and will get a shot to shine for us early on. Our first line when healthy will include Eric Staal, Jason Allison and Justin Williams, which should be another fun one to watch. Cole, Vrbata and Vasciek will make up line three and we'll rotate around guys for the fourth line while we see what we want to do with our forwards. |

Atlanta @ Carolina Atlanta 3 @ Carolina 4 (OT) 1st star: Ilya Kovalchuck (ATL) 2 G, 1 A, 3 PT, E 2nd star: Erik Cole (CAR) 1 G, 0 A, 1 PT, E (GWG) 3rd star: Dick Tarnstrom (CAR) 0 G, 1 A, 1 PT, - 1 A big time win in our home opener, especially coming in OT. We had some big contributions from our young guys as Eric Staal scored, as did Phil Kessel (with an assist from Andrew Ladd) and Niklas Nordgren. So 3 of our 4 goals were from rookies, second and third year players. Big for us, even though it's 1 of 82, we'll take it, especially with Jason Allison (Go figure) nursing a groin injury, but he should be able to go in a few days. Pre-game notes: - Jason Allison makes his Carolina debut Boston 3 @ Carolina 4 (Shooutout) 1st star: Glen Murray (BOS) 1 G, 2 A, 3 PT, + 2 2nd star: Cory Stillman (CAR) 1 G, 1 A, 2 PT, E 3rd star: Radim Vrbata (CAR) 1 G, 1 A, 2 PT, + 1 Another exciting win, as this time we go to a shootout, where all four of our shooters (Kessel, Williams, Staal, Ladd) score and we win 4-3 in the shootout. Phil Kessel also added a goal in regulation to give him two in two nights (Again on an assist from Ladd) showing that the line of Kess/Ladd/Brind can play together. Cam Ward was solid between the pipes again tonight, and we start off with two big wins early, because we'll need them early and often before we hit a wall. 10/13/06 Pre-game notes: - No changes Carolina 4 @ Atlanta 5 1st star: Patrik Stefan (ATL) 1 G, 1 A, 2 PT, + 1 2nd star: Marian Hossa (ATL) 1 G, 1 A, 2 PT, E 3rd star: Eric Staal (CAR) 1 G, 2 A, 3 PT, + 2 We blew this game by giving up 2 third period goals but we still played well enough. Jack Johnson had his first career point (an assist) and Eric Staal had his best game as a Hurricane since I've been here. Jason Allison also added his first goal as a Hurricane, which is a big boost. We just need to keep putting points on the board and letting the D works itself out. Post-game: Andrew Hutchinson is out the year with a torn MCL, Danny Richmond is called up to take his spot. 10/15/06 Pre-game notes: - Danny Richmond replaces Andrew Hutchinson - Colton Yellow Horn has 17 points in 7 games in the WHL - Peter Mueller has 20 points in 10 games in the WHL Phoenix 3 @ Carolina 4 1st star: Erik Staal (CAR) 2 G, 1 A, 3 PT, + 2, 10 rating 2nd star: Niklas Nordgren (CAR) 0 G, 1, 1 PT, + 2 3rd star: Jack Johnson (CAR) 0 G, 2 A, 2 PT, + 2 Another big win, and this one in grand fashion as we score 3 goals in the third two of which in 14 seconds, with one being Staals game winner giving us another big time win. Eric Staal is playing his best ever for us as he now has 7 points in 4 games, and Jack Johnson continues to look good with 2 points and an 8 rating. We know it's early but we have reason to be excited. Post game: Erik Cole is out 2 months with a dislocated shoulder. 10/17/06 Pre-game notes: Ray Whitney replaces Erik Cole Carolina 2 @ New York Rangers 6 1st star: Jaromir Jagr (NYR) 3 G, 0 A, 3 PT, + 2 2nd star: Hugh Jessman (NYR) 1 G, 0 A, 1 PT, + 1 3rd star: Steve Begin (NYR) 1 G, 1 A, 2 PT, + 1 We were smoked but we've been playing well so we'll hope this is just one bad game. We'll regroup for the next one. 10/20/06 Pre-game notes: - No changes Carolina 3 @ Philadelphia 6 1st star: Peter Forsberg (PHI) 2 G, 1 A, 3 PT, + 2 2nd star: Keith Primeau (PHI) 2 G, 0 A, 2 PT, + 2 3rd star: Brian Savage (PHI) 0 G, 2 A, 2 PT, + 2 We need to give Ward a break, he's struggling but Philly is 4-0-1 so we should know its possible. Kess scores #3, which is nice but it isn't enough as we are rolled. Post game note: Radim Vrbata is out 4 months with a torn UCL. Last edited by DeToxRox : 11-17-2005 at 09:18 PM. |

Pre-game notes: - Gerber starts in net Carolina 6 @ New York Islanders 4 1st star: Dick Tarnstrom (CAR) 0 G, 4 A, 4 PT, + 1 2nd star: Jason Allison (CAR) 1 G, 3 A, 4 PT, + 1 3rd star: Cory Stillman (CAR) 2 G, 1 A, 3 PT, - 1 Sitllman comes alive in the 3rd with 2 of our 3 3rd period goals and we go on to get a big 6-4 win on the road vs a potential Eastern power. The two new guys, Tarnstron and Allison both put up 10 ratings and Andrew Ladd scores his first career NHL goal to give us a big time W. 10/24/06 Pre-game notes: - No changes Minnesota 5 @ Carolina 6 (OT) 1st star: Oleg Tverdovsky (CAR) 1 G, 1 A, 2 PT, + 4 2nd star: David Vyborny (MIN) 2 G, 1 A, 3 PT, - 1 3rd star: Christian Ehrhoff (MIN) 0 G, 2 A, 2 PT, - 2 Phil Kessel comes up big for us with 2 goals, but Oleg Tverdovsky is the star, scoring the GW in OT and playing a hell of a game on the point. We're making these games exciting again but it's good for the game and it's building a lot of character for our team. 10/25/06 Pre-game notes: - Jason Allison gets a night off - Colton Yellow Horn is named WHL Player of the Week (3 G, 6 A, 9 PT) Carolina 3 @ Washington 7 1st star: Jeff Halpen (WAS) 1 G, 2 A, 3 PT, + 2 2nd star: Alexander Semin (WAS) 1 G, 1 A, 2 PT, + 2 3rd star: Eric Lindros (WAS) 1 G, 0 A, 1 PT, E Phil Kessel scores for us but it's not enough as we're hammered 7-3 by a very solid Washington team. Nothing else to really say about this one. 10/30/06 Pre-game notes: - Jason Allison goes back in the lineup - Cam Ward starts in Net Carolina 2 @ Pittsburgh 5 1st star: Tom Poti (PIT) 1 G, 1 A, 2 PT, + 2 2nd star: Ryan Malone (PIT) 2 G, 0 A, 2 PT, + 2 3rd star: Shane Doan (PIT) 1 G, 1 A, 2 PT, + 1 Another tough loss, compounded by the fact that Jack Johnson slightly fractures his hand and will miss 10 days or so which means we're going to struggle finding another D to take his place during his absence. We offer a contract to one of our older prospects playing in the UHL, that's how desperate we are for D. 10/30/06 Pre-game notes: - No changes Carolina 5 @ Ottawa 6 1st star: Martin Havlat (OTT) 1 G, 3 A, 4 PT, + 4 2nd star: Bryan Smolinski (OTT) 1 G, 2 A, 3 PT, + 3 3rd star: Dany Heatley (OTT) 1 G, 0 A, 1 PT, + 1 Kessel and Ladd score goals for us, and Jason Allison has his own goal and 2 assists, but we give up a late one to Healtey give Ottawa the win. We gotta' be somewhat happy with this loss if it can be possible as Ottawa improved to 7-1 and is the class of the East. We're banged up and young but we're continually getting better, so don't let this minor losing streak make you think other wise. Last edited by DeToxRox : 11-19-2005 at 05:55 PM. |

Wow you obviously don't know anything about hockey then.....if he doesn't have any assists shows that he is on the line with idiots who can't score. since he's got 7 goals he is doing all the scoring. |

Ha, right now Kess is playing with Ladd/Brind'amour who are better playmakers then goal scorers, but Kess also has 3 goals on the PP with Staal and Allison which is helping. |

Ha, I'm a fan of them too, NS.
Yellow Horn and Mueller should be representing the Canadian WJC championship team, and I cannot wait to see how they do. |

We got lit up vs Nashville, and it's not an excuse but the Preds are a top team in the West, but still, we need to get better on the road. With that said, this team has been incredibly improved thanks to our young guys and the Vets in Tarnstrom and Allison. Last edited by DeToxRox : 11-29-2005 at 12:41 PM. |

Eric Staal had another huge stretch though with 9 points in the 5 games, as he Allison and Kessel continue to deliever big. Our problem is still the D. We rank 5th in the NHL in goals scored but last in the NHL in goals allowed. Erik Cole is back in the lineup for us which is a huge relief. We'll be able to play three very solid lines with him back in. |
