The latest official patch made some changes to the content of the defines.lua file. This means that Mods won't work until they release an update or you add the changes yourself.

Pagans comes out May 28. This probably a pretty big change for the game

I'm excited. I wish there were more events to take part of and greater strategic value, but this game is so good even in Vanilla that I don't care. I need to download the GOT mod though.

Just purchased this on Amazon:

Amazon.com: Crusader Kings Pack [Download]: Video Games

Crusader Kings Complete + Crusader Kings 2 + around 20 DLC packs for $14.99.

I've never played the game yet, any recommendation on a good site (or thread) on how the game works/strategies/noobie advice

Best thing to do IMO is just dive in and play around. Ireland is the ideal spot to first play and learn the game. You have a contained area to work with and can concentrate on uniting Ireland to form the Kingdom.

Once you've done that, you can head east to Wales/England or south to Brittany.

Yup. Ireland is a great place to start. When I get frustrated, I tend to go back to Ireland anyways.

There´s a pretty in-depth guide in over on the paradox forums :

Paradox Interactive Forums

here´s the same as a PDF : File-Upload.net - Guide-to-CK-II.pdf

it´s before most (all ?) of the extensions, but does a good job explaining the major mechanics of the game as well as putting the dots together in the "how are things tied together?" department. Also does a good job conveying the basic thoughts behind it all, i.e. the real life side of things with the feudal systam of the middle ages as the games cornerstone.

Nice! I've still never managed that, have gotten Wales, Ireland and most of Scotland before being overwhelmed by a united England a couple times

Wales is one of my favorite places to play in. Used to love Italy too, until The Republic wrecked everything, even for those who didn't buy it like I haven't.

I think the CK2 deal is just Steam keys for everything. It has been in the past at least.

I got a little lucky, I have to say. The Norwegians took over England in 1066, then the Danes took over and ruled for 200 years before I usurped the crown. During that time, I concentrated on build up Wales and being nice, before eyeing Ireland (and then Scotland) at a duchy by duchy stage - while quickly picking up provinces that were dumb enough to rebel against the Danes (being English, there would be a rebellion every 10-15 years or so) with overwhelming force (Ie, before their civil wars were squenched). The Danes let me be, and at a certain point, their other wars (at one point, they controlled England + most of Norway + Sweden + Jerusalem in addition to Denmark - only HRE and Byzantines were bigger) got to them, and they have been retreating for the past 50 years or so. By the time I finally usurped the Kingdom of England (only about 15 years ago - were in 1274), I controlled a big chunk of the throne anyway.

It uses steam. I bought it on amazon, went to a page with all the keys and then added them one-by-one into steam. Took about 5 minutes, but now everything is in Steam.

I really need a mod that limits or eliminates HRE. No fun when every game just ends up as blob city

I find its case by case basis - CK+ (which needs to be updated for new patch) is very anti-blobbing, and can help. That being said, I've seen games (like my current one) where the Mongols split up completely, switch to Christianity, or the HRE completely falls apart.

CK 2 and a bunch of the pre-TOG DLC is on sale for 75% off on Steam as part of TOG release week.

Good in case you have any gaps you wanted to fill, such as my finally buying The Republic for $2.49.

Not sure. I know if you have a Steam key for a non-Steam version, you can activate it, but GamersGate doesn't and is completely separate.

I have to say I think TOG is one of, if not the, best DLCs ever made. It's amazing how delightful raiding and capturing potential concubines as a Norse is.

Man, 15 years ago, it we had been told that we were going to spend 40 on a game, and then the developer was going to make us spend another 40 just on extra content for the game, we'd have all cried "FOUL!"

We'd have just said that it should have been in the original game all along, and what a ripoff it was. Amazing how MMO's and micro-transactions have trained us that just a little bit here and there will be alright, in an effort to extract us from our money.

And boy does it ever work now.

The pre-order bonus for EU4 includes a free copy of CK2.

Which I already own. So for the six people on here who don't actually own it...wait a couple weeks, and assuming I can gift it, I shall.

Edit: Yes, per Paradox, you'll be able to gift it, so when I get the key, I'll figure out some amusing way to gift it to someone here.

WOOT.

Epic!!

GOT mod - playing as the Martells...it took me all of 9 years to place a Martell on the throne. Here's how I did it.

Married Quentyn to Danerys (pursuing multiple plans here). Unfortunately they've had no kids yet. Married Arianne to some lordling (she's had 6 kids - 3 girls and 3 boys). Trystane starts as betrothed to Myrcella (regular marriage, not matrilineal - this is key). Had a Faceless Man luckily show up and offer to kill someone at the cost of maiming Doran. Wheels turning - said yes. Waited for Trystane and Myrcella to get married, then Faceless Man killed Tommen. Doran died shortly after from his maiming, and Arianne succeeded him. Trystane and Myrcella had a son (Ameron). Trystane died in a duel with a Jordayne (only blemish in my plan). Arianne (me) plotted to kill Myrcella. Plot succeeded. Myrcella dies - Ameron Martell ascends to the Iron Throne!! Now if Dany and Quentyn "The Learned Spear" would only have a girl I could matrilinerally betrothe the two of them and return the Targaryen's to the Iron Throne.

Also, the ability to continue a game from CK2.

Fans of Crusader Kings II will be able to maintain the empires they have established and guide them through the age of exploration in an all-new strategic experience, continuing their personal stories of expansion and conquest.

The way it's stated makes it seem like it might be just for preorders.

Quote:
Early adopters will also receive a new Saved Game Converter for Crusader Kings II, which will read the details of a saved game from a Crusader Kings II and convert that into a game that can be played in Europa Universalis IV.

Hopefully not just early adopters, though if it is a conversion tool just given out with preorders I think others will likely find a way to use it.

Crusader Kings II: Sons of Abraham announced | News | PC Gamer

Quote:
Paradox Development Studio has just announced the fifth expansion for Crusader Kings II: Sons of Abraham. Two long-requested features, playable Jewish characters and the ability to interact with the Catholic college of cardinals, will make their way into the medieval murder your brother and steal his stuff simulator. The ability to part the seas and march your armies through has yet to be confirmed, but quite a bit else has.

The focus of this expansion, contrasting the previous Old Gods DLC, is on the Abrahamic monotheistic faiths, with special attention paid to Christian, Muslim, and Jewish characters. Catholicism will now operate under a college of cardinals. Nine cardinals will be active at any one time, appointed by the Pope. You will be able to affect this process by grooming your courtiers for a church career, keeping on good terms with the Pope, and putting money into a campaign fund.

When the Pope dies, the active cardinals will elect a new one. If your Pope is elected, you will gain powerful abilities such as the ability to be granted a crusade on a target of your choice. Controlling several cardinals not only increases your chances of having one of your candidates elected Pope, but also makes it almost impossible for you to be excommunicated.

This is going to get me back into playing Catholic counts. One of my favorite things to do in Machiavelli: the Prince was control the College of Cardinals. I can't wait to do the same thing here.

Has anyone picked up the new DLC? I'm not really sure what all the new features are, but I am trying to get the details before I buy,

I bought it but haven't done anything with it yet.

Along with the new DLC though is a pretty big patch for the game which changes quite a decent amount of things. I can't go dig up patch notes right now, but should be checked out even for those not getting the DLC
