BBCF: The Rise of a Superstar (Actually: The Tragic Tale of the Glass Man.)
I've started a career with 1.03 and have been really enjoying it. However, starting at the top of the ladder with USC didn't seem like interesting dynasty material. However, I'm thrilled with a great draft class I just signed that is highlighted by the #2 QB in the nation and decided I wanted to share my enthusiasm. I'm going to do at least a mini-dynasty focusing on Randy who mostly by his own virtue, but also due to the relative lack of progress of our junior QB will start as a true freshman.
One concern is that he has a low work ethic, and has been complaining about off the field issues. Hopefully, he can overcome these and lead us to glory. I'll also briefly examine the rest of our roster which has several other very talented players from our first recruiting class since I took over. Randy was rated 9/18 by our staff before our first training camp. Here he is after training camp. He is the star of this story. (Note, I might consider continuing this dynasty following the Trojans after Randy goes to the NFL if there is interest. Also of note is that I won't be playing too much tonight or tomorrow due to family Christmas celebrations.)

Last year, we finished 11-2 beating the Michigan Wolverines in the Fiesta Bowl. Our AD expected us to build on that success. I decided it was necessary to replace last year's OC who was not good at developing talent.
Now, we've recently hired one of the best Offensive Coordinators in the nation who excels in just about everything and runs the balanced offense that I prefer my team to run. He is excellent at developing all offensive players except for offensive linemen where he is average. However, signing him had a cost as I've had to cut back on my recruiting budget a bit. We kept our defensive coordinator who is above average at most things, but wants to run a 4-2-5. I'm sticking with the 4-3 we ran before most likely. Our ST coach is above average. I'll break down the roster later tonight. |

Some position by position analysis:
QB: Bennie Brady played a bit as a mopup guy last year. He had a few good games including one game in which he was 3 of 3 for 112 yards and 2 TD's, but he also had 2 games where he threw 2 picks in very limited time. Bennie had a chance to win the starting job, but he blew it. Randy will start from day one. The rest of the group has me worried, and I don't really want any of them playing. I'm also pleasantly shocked by Randy Collins early GPA in college. He had a 1.7 in H.S! RB: Alan Hood was the backup last year, but Horace has left. Horace was a very good back with explosive speed. Now, we have Alan as the main guy. Alan is a rumbler who has great inside power, but doesn't have the speed to go all the way. Fortunately, Malcolm Maston has explosive speed. We also have Wes Nelson who was part of the great recruiting class. He was ranked in the top 25 at his position in the nation. He has very good speed, and is a potentially an excellent receiver out of the backfield. FB: Renaldo Pugh was the starter last year, and he wasn't very impressive. However, he has done well in camp so far. However, we added Chukky Odom via the JC route, and he might press Pugh for PT. WR: We had 2 very good receivers graduate last year. Fortunately, we have our very talented receiver Randy Branch back. Randy was overshadowed by Terrell last year. However, he still managed to have 52 catches for 813 yards and 7 TD's. This year, he will be THE MAN among the receivers. Dick Sayers has earned the opportunity to be the #2 receiver, and hopefully the 2nd year Freshman can show that he is worthy. TE: Estes Henderson was the starter last year by default, but now sophomore Dashon Kattus has taken over the starting role. Both are better blockers than receivers, and I don't expect too much production out of the position. OT: We lost our 3rd team All-American RT to the pros. Fortunaely, we have our starting LT back this year. Byron Woods has continued to improve, and is now among the elite linemen. However, his grades have always been a problem and it will be tough to keep him eligible. Russ McGee is the likely new right tackle, and he seems like he will grow into the position. We have good depth, and I'm considering redshirting our top freshman Mike Walker, but he might be good enough that he deserves PT this year. OG: This is clearly, my weakest area. I might ask Mike Walker to play some guard this year, because the current group is so weak. We tried to recruit some stud freshmen, but they all turned us down for other teams. Both starters from last year graduated, and by default Stephen Goss will start. Also, true freshman Eric Bieniemy has surprised us by looking a bit better than we expected so he may start as well. Depth is a big concern for this group. C: Last year's starter graduated, and we are left with Kevin Tripucka as the starter. The junior is average at best, and I consider this area my next weakest group. DE: Darcey Middleton was a key contributor to my defense last year, and I expect him to make some big plays again this year. Bill Hampton has grown a great deal in the last year and he will again start opposite DArcey. WE have excellent depth in this group, and I'm excited to see what they can do. DT: Tim Carney was a key starter last year, but struggled. I think he is more ready to play this year and should thrive in his senior year. Richard Carter will likely start alongside him as I'm going to run a 4-3 most likely. ILB: Our Star ILB went pro early this year. Fortunaely, we had a great deal of depth. Lavern Alexander thrived in limited playing time and he'll probably start at MLB. Clifton Lindell will get plenty of PT as well. Demetrin Brady is a redshirt freshman with a great deal of talent as well. Perhaps, my coaches will convince me to run a 3-4 after all.. OLB: A weaker group, and probably the reason I won't a 3-4. We have 3 average players here, and JC transfer Rodrick Garcia might step right into the starter's role. Pat Davenport might start alongside him, or I might see about moving Demetrin Brady to OLB as a permeant move. CB: This was a weakness last year. We solved this weakness by recruiting 2 of the top 15 CB's in the country in Dwone Secules and Wayne Cole. Dwone has won the early battle to become the starter, but Wayne will play plenty of NB and is constantly pushing for a starter's role. Sam Cole our starter last year, has really improved and is on the verge of being an elite CB. This trio is one of our strong points for sure. FS: This position was a disaster last year. I'm amazed that we won with the weakness at the position. Fortunately, I acquired the top FS in the country who happened to be a JC player. Jonathan immediately steps into the starter's role and turns a major weakness into a strength. However, he will be a challenge to keep eligible. SS: Don Brookins was woefully outclassed last year. Along with our FS, he made very few plays. However, he has taken a quantum leap forward and is looking like a decent SS who has the potential to be special. I wasn't sure that he would improve and managed to get Courtney Carlton to come join us. Courtney was a top 25 SS last year, but looks disappointing so far. K: Kerry Gibbs remains a solid kicker with John Mitchell hopefully working on his kicking strength to take over next year. P: Warren Macklin remains a good to very good kicker, and Joe Graff is good as well.

Demetrin Brady looks like he will take some time to adjust to OLB. We are going to run a 4-3 despite that. We are also continuing with a balanced offensive philosophy. We will run a majority of our plays out of the I-Formation and Pro Formation.
I think we probably don't have the talent to win the National Championship with a true Freshman at QB, but I want to give us the opportunity to pull it off if he surprises me with early greatness. Unfortunately, we have a previously agreed game with Notre Dame in the very first week, so I can't get Randy's feet wet slowly. However, I'm going to schedule one early easy game in week 2 to hopefully give him some more confidence, then a moderately difficult game, then a potentially difficult non-conference game. At least that is what I'm attempting. I do this by requesting Akron in week 2 at home, a home and away with Indiana in week 3, then a home game against Georgia in week 4. The Zips accepted our week 2 game. Indiana and the Bulldogs both decline our requests. I end up offering Kentucky and NC State home and away series, as Georgia and LSU have indicated that they have no interest in playing us in California. They both accept, and our schedule is full. Our SOS might be weaker than I wanted, but hopefully if we can take care of business, we will get a good final BCS ranking. Here is a look at our Schedule:

We are in the rather interesting position of having Freshman that are either too good, or too bad to be worth redshirting. Therefore, I don't redshirt any of my 80 players this year.
We are about to have our first game which will be a fight right away against Notre Dame. I talk with my coaches and our team tutors before the game about which players might be in trouble academically, and unfortunately, the list is extensive: Our star receiver Branch has a GPA of 1.76. I tell my tutors to work with him 8 extra hours per week, and hope it is enough. Both of our starting DT's have GPA's in the danger range. I have our coaches give them 6 extra hours each. Superstar tackle, Woods is in trouble with a 1.71 GPA. I have our coaches give him 10 hours per week extra work. There are 5 other starters who each get a few hours as well. Hopefully, we have enough extra tutoring to last the year... |

Preview of the ND - USC Game:
Despite being at home, we are 1 point dogs! Our offenses are judged to be fairly close. Our defense is judged to be stronger by most experts, who feel their special teams are better. William Sweeney, their QB is very good and is the man we have to key in on. I'm planning on blitzing him quite frequently. I let our coaches call the plays, but I set their philosophy before the game. It's about time to start! |

We have a full house today of 92,000.
We ran the ball twice, before Randy was sacked on his first passing play. Fortunately, he hooked up with Branch for a 19 yard gain on the next play. Randy was 4 of 4 with a 3 yard TD pass to Dick Sayers on our first drive! We ran for 19 yards and passed for 58 yards on the first drive. Sam Cole intercepts their first pass and returns it 20 yards to their 30! Hood ran the ball down their throats ending with a 2 yard TD to make it 14-0! OH MY! Jonathan, our new FS intercepts their QB's 2nd pass! He returns it 46 yards to the 5 yard line! Unfortunately, their defense hangs tough and we settle for the short FG to make it 17-0 midway through the 1st quarter. Our defense holds them to 3 and out on their next drive. Randy ends up throwing 2 incompletions and we go 3 and out on our next drive. They gradually work the ball down the field and end Sweeney makes a few good throws to set up a 2 yard rushing TD to make it 17-7 just before the end of the 1st quarter. Wes Nelson gets his first carry for us and makes a key 10 yard run to convert a 3rd and 5. At the end of 1, we are up 17-7. Alan Hood shocks me by running over 2 guys for a big 49 yard rush. Wes finishes it off with a 1 yard run off tackle to make it 24-7. We each exchange a few failed drives, before Sweeney hits his TE for a 2 yard TD to cap a balanced drive in which they ran it for 31 yards and passed it for 32 yards. We are still up 24-14 with the 1st half winding down.. Randy ran a great 2 minute drill for 40 yards, but a pair of holding penalties killed the drive. We are up 24-14 at the half, mainly due to those 2 early interceptions and the resulting TD's. Randy Collins at the half: 11 of 17 for 120 yards, 1 TD 0 INT. William Sweeney dissects us on their first drive of the 2nd half as the QB has completed 7 of his last 7 passes, but we hold them to a FG to make it 24-17. Benny Brady has to come in because of a slight cramp by Collins, and Benny completes 2 passes for 80 yards including a 67 yard TD to Sayers! Sayers is making a great impression in his first game as he now has 5 catches for 103 yards and 2 TD's! Charles Staley, their 2nd string back has a 10 yard TD run to cap a drive in which they ran for 55 yards and passed for 23. It's now 31-24 USC. Collins is hurt on the 1st play, and it looks like he might miss some time.. We exchange failed drives and end the 3rd quarter up 31-24. We put together a 65 yard drive to start the 4th, but have to settle for 3 to make it 34-24. Bennie looks VERY good on the drive. We exchange a pair of failed drives in which Bennie throws a poor interception to blow it for us when we were within FG range. Our defense looks a bit demoralized as they complete a long 58 yard pass followed by a 1 yard pass to the RB for a TD. To top it off, our starting DT was injured on the drive. We are now up 34-31 with 5 minutes left. Hood runs over guys for 35 yards, but ultimately we get stopped short when going for it on 4th and 2 to give them the ball back with 2 minutes left! Our defense sacks Sweeney twice to get them into a 3rd and 21. They can't convert the 3rd or 4th and 21, and we get the ball back. Hood runs the clock down to 12 seconds before we kick the 44 yard FG. Game over. 37-31 win! Let's take a look at the boxscore. Let's also see how badly Randy is hurt. |

Injury Report:
QB Randy Collins suffered a minor nerve injury in his elbow. He is probable for the next game. OG Stephen Goss suffered a severely pulled Quad and is doubtful for the upcoming game. OLB Sean Badger suffered a dislocated clavicle and is very doubtful. I end up asking my young RT to try to play LG until Goss can come back. Randy will start as usual. Bennie showed me that he can play well if Randy can't go the whole game. Sean will be removed from his primary backup OLB spot and Brady will have to show that he is learning the position quickly as he might get some time as the primary backup. Here is the top 10 poll: 1. Now we host Akron. We are 22 point favorites against them.
Their offense is averaging 123 YPG. Ours is averaging 457. Their defense is averaging 541 YPG. Our is averaging 389. Our special teams are also ranked better than theirs. Their "star" player is RB J. Gregg who has 60 yards on 25 carries last game. I expect us to beat them by at least 30. |

We have a full crowd of 92,000.
Their QB shocks us by coming out gunning and hits a 25 yard pass on their first play. They follow that up with a 33 yad bomb! Our defense wakes up and stuffs them the next 3 plays, and they miss the very short FG. Randy gets sacked on his first two pass attempts, and we have to punt early. We run the ball well on the next dive, before Randy completes 3 passes in a row including a 2 yard play action pass to Branch for the TD. 7-0 lead. Their QB is playing out of his mind and he drives them down the field, and their HB dives in from the 1 for a TD to make it 7-7 just before the end of the 1st quarter. At the end of 1, it is 7-7. Our our next drive a short pass from Randy to Branch is turned into a 62 yard TD, but holding calls it back. We end up punting as we can't convert the 3rd and 15. We force them to go 3 and out. Randy is holding onto the ball too much and it's leading to some sacks, but he just hit Bell for a 37 yard reception. However, the next play an offensive pass interference followed by a sack kill our drive. We exchange a few failed drives, but then Malcolm Maston shows his amazing speed (which is why I'm using him as much as I am) and he burns the defense for a 65 yard TD run to make it 14-7. At halftime, we are leading 14-7. Surprising. Collins is 10 of 13 for 109 yards 1 TD 0 INT, but 4 sacks for 12 yards. On our first drive of the second half, we give the ball to Hood over and over again. He ends a 80 yard drive with a 1 yard TD run. He had 58 yards rushing on the drive. 21-7. Brian DeMulling our former starter, and now backup FS makes a great interception and returns it 62 yards for a TD to make it 28-7! Dwone Secules, our freshman CB intercepts the first pass of their next drive. Finally, our defense is waking up. Randy chose to scramble on a play and was injured on a big hit from the MLB! I wander if Randy is going to be injury prone? That doesn't stop Alan Hood from finishing the drive with a 11 yard TD run to make it 35-7. We force their QB into 3 incompletions. It's nice to see our defense finally play ball. At the end of 3, we are up 35-7. Sheesh, our defense gives up a 51 yard pass that had no business being caught. Richard Carter, our big DT, forces a fumble which we recover. They get a meaningless TD with 5 minutes left, but miss the extra point. 35-13. That seems to piss our offense off, as they start running with passion again. Maston finishes a 65 yard drive off in which we ran it 49 yards with a 19 yard TD run. The game is over. 42-13 win. Our offense was very good thanks to a excellent running game. The defense sleep walked through most of the 1st half. Hopefully, Randy isn't hurt too bad. Let's look at the box score. |

I have received excellent news as none of my players have been declared academically ineligible.
Furthermore, Randy just had a minor sprain and he is expected to be 100% next week! OG Stephen Goss is still doubtful and despite him having given up 2 sacks, I'll probably start my freshman OT Walker at LG again.. OLB: Sean Badger's clavicle dislocation will keep him out again this upcoming week. Backup FS Brian DeMulling suffered a fractured arm and is doubtful for several weeks. Today's game is against Kentucky. They have the 70th rated offense in the nation led by RB R. Hoak. Their defense is 90th rated in the nation. Our offense is rated 13th in the nation by averaging 498 ypg with Alan Hood as our main star. Our defense is ranked 70th giving up 408 ypg.
The main matchup is Alan Hood who is averaging 158 ypg (6.6 YPC) against the Kentucky Front 7. Kentucky's run defense is 20th in the nation. We hope to inflate that number today. Interestingly, our offensive coordinator is suggesting that we run the ball more this game, and I'm agreeing with his recommendation. |

We are 16 point favorites. We have a full house here today.
We shanked the opening kickoff giving them great field position, and Rickie Hoak started off with a few good runs against us. One their 2nd pass, Demetrin Brady gets his first sack as the new OLB position! We end up forcing them to fail the 3rd and 18 and they punt. Our first drive, we come out running and start off with a two big runs by our FB and HB. Unfortunately, Randy gets sacked on his first pass attempt. Branch drops a key 3rd and 8 pass and we have to punt on our first drive. We force them to go 3 and out. On our second drive, Alan is stuffed on 2 runs. On 3rd and 11, Randy hits Dick Sayers in stride for a 69 yard TD! We force them to go 3 and out, then string together a long time consuming drive in which we run for 63 yards. Unfortunately, two penalties kill the drive and we attempt the 37 yard FG which we miss. 7-0. Demetrin Brady has another key tackle on their first play. We force another 3 and out as the 1st quarter ends. We are up 7-0. We run the ball a few times, and Randy converts a 3rd and 4 by scrambling to keep the drive alive (and doesn't get hurt when he is tackled.) We have a nice drive in which we ran for 30 yards and passed for 46 yards finished by a 10 yard TD striker from Randy Collins to Randy Branch! 14-0. With 10 minutes to go in the 2nd quarter, we have outgained Kentucky 232 yards to 17 yards. We force them to go 3 and out. Our next drive, Malcolm Maston shows his excellent speed as he breaks off a 49 yard TD run! We had all 64 yards of the drive covered on the ground. 21-0. Kentucky strings together a few good runs, and Richie Hoak makes a 41 yard TD run in which he ran over our middle linebacker and then juked the safety before outrunning the defense. 21-7. Our next drive, Randy Collins makes a few good throws to convert 3rd and 7 and 3rd and 9. Alan Hood was injured on the drive, but he could come back later in the game. Randy Collins is doing a great job of running the 2 minute drill, but a 3rd and 2 is dropped by the FB and we eventually end up punting from their 45. Halftime: We are up 21-7. Randy Collins halftime stats: 9 of 13 passing, 144 yads, 2 TD's 0 INT, 2 sacks for 3 yards. Our first play of the 2nd half, Malcolm Maston makes guys miss left and right for a dazzling run of juke moves for a 25 yard rush. 2 plays later, Randy Collins hits Cliff Bell on a streak for a 47 yard TD off of a play action fake! 28-7. Richie Hoak has a few good runs, but our MLB slams him into the ground and his shoulder looks dislocated.. he is done for the day. We stuff their backup RB and force them to punt. Our next drive is highlighted by a great pass from Randy to Randy Branch for 25 yards, as well as a nice amount of pounding it on the ground. Unfortunately, Alan is stopped on a 3rd and 2 and we settle for a short FG to make it 31-7. We force them to stop well short of midfield, and drive down the field before getting stopped short. We settle for a 51 yard FG. 34-7. They fumble the kickoff and we recover! Randy Collins hits Randy Branch for a 14 yard TD on the post route! 41-7. This is exciting because this Kentucky team actually has a decent offensive line and some good talent on the defense. End of 3. 41-7 lead for us. Randy converts a 3rd and 17 (that was from successive holding penalties) by completing a 22 yard pass to Dick Sayers! Sayers appears to be his favorite target. Randy has some spectacular passes to drive us down the field that ends with a 12 yard TD pass to Bell! 48-7! Their backups drive the field pretty well against our backups. Mike White looks like a much better QB for them from this series.. Mike White scrambles 1 yard for the TD on 4th and 1 to make it 48-14 with 2 minutes left. They recove the onside kickoff! Mike is tearing up our second team defense, but we stop him short of another TD. Game over 48-13. I love how well Randy Collins played today. This was a glimpse of how great he can be. Also, our defense was rock solid. We outgained them by a huge margin. Let's look at the box score.

Injury Report:
FS Brian DeMulling is still hurt from his elbow fracture. Everyone else is 100%. Notable Facts: Randy Collins 198.7 QB Rtg is 2nd among starters only behind Gordie Webster of Penn State. Gordie is a Junior who has thrown for almost 1000 yards with 11 TD's and 1 INT and a 78% completion percentage. Randy's stats on the year: 198.7 rating, 585 yards, 76.3% complete, 7 TD's 0 INT. Alan Hood's 464 yards is 6th in the nation. The leading rusher is Steve Montoya of Nebraska. Steve has 539 yards with a 7.38 YPC average. He has 4 TD's. Byron Woods is 3rd in the nation with 9 KRB and 5 Pancakes. Virginia Tech's Steve Bollinger leads the nation with 13 KRB and 9 pancakes. Depth Chart Issues: Stephen Goss moves back into the starting LG position, but I keep Mike Walker as the primary backup there. I also promote him to the primary backup at RT. Demetrin Brady played well, but I move Badger back to the primary backup at SLB now that he is healed. However, I leave Demtrin as the primary backup at WLB. Recruiting issues: P. Berton, a WR, from Hartnell Community College is really impressing me. He is reportedly very interested in us, and I might go after him. He already has 4 long TD catches. J. Long from Granada Hills in California already has 3 picks in his senior year and also has 179 yards rushing. He is also very interested in coming to USC. Top 10 Poll: 1. Michigan 2-0. 2. Texas 3-0 3. Penn State 3-0 Game Planning Issues: Our offensive coordinator wants us to pass more, but I decide to stick with the run first, pass second game plan that we used last week. I think this will help us counter NC State's high powered offense, if we can maintain time of possession. Preview: Our offense is averaging 548.7 YPG vs NC State's 432.7 YPG allowed on defense. W. Blundin is a key man on defense for them and leads the team with 3 sacks. Their offense is averaging 426.3 ypg led by D. Pauley who has thrown for 800 yards with 7 TD's and 3 INT. Our defense is giving up 342.7 YPG. Their special teams are rated better. Our offense and defense are both rated better. The key matchup is listed as Alan Hood vs their front 7. They are only giving up 96 YPG on the ground and rank 19th in the nation against the run.

We are 17 point favorites. We have 92,000 fans here today.
We get the ball first. We put together a 4:12 second drive in which we ran for 33 yards and passed for 29 that is capped by a 8 yard TD run by Alan Hood. He had 22 yards on 3 carries on the drive. We force a 3 and out on their first drive. Our offensive line gets hit with back to back holding penalties which kills a good drive, but Randy Collins made a great scramble and throw to get us back within FG range and we hit the 50 yarder. Randy is a perfect 4-4 for 63 yards so far. 10-0 lead. North Carolina State puts together a decent drive, but we stop them outside the 40 and they punt. Randy overthrows Randy Branch on a wide open play fake to blow a 3rd and 2 and we punt. End of the 1st quarter: 10-0 lead. They put together a decent drive, but miss the 45 yard FG. On the first play of the drive, Alan Hood injures his foot. The early word is that his day is done. This doesn't stop us from putting together a 5 minute drive in which we ran for 36 yards and passed for 35. The drive was capped by a 3 yard TD pass from Randy to Randy Branch! 17-0. We hold them to a 3 and out. Our starting C, Rusty Williams goes down with an injury late in our next drive, and that will be a costly loss as we don't have depth there. We drive within the 10, but end up settling for the short FG to make it 20-0. Randy made some excellent passes on the drive as we passed for 48 yards on the drive and only ran for 15. We've been giving up long kickoff returns all day, but we hold them to 3 and out. We have the ball deep in our zone with 50 seconds left. We make a few completions, but will not score before time runs out. 20-0 at the half. Halftime stats: Randy Collins 13 of 14 passing for 143 yards and 1 TD 0 INT. 1 sack for 1 yard. At the half we've outgained them 303 yards to 69 yards. On their first drive of the 2nd half, We force them to go 3 and out. I LOVE how our defense is playing against this good offense! We run the ball for 32 yards before getting stuffed and settling for a 44 yard FG to make it 23-0. On a 3rd and 9, Tim Carney nails the QB as he is throwing it. Pauley their starting QB looks like he is seriously hurt. However, he drove them into FG range before he was hurt and they convert the 43 yard FG to make it 23-3. They stop us after only 5 plays and we punt. Our inside running game isn't as effective with our starting C out. We stop them short of midfield. Jonathan Green, our FS, has an excellent punt return to give us starting field position on their 48. Our first play of the drive, Randy Collins hits Randy Branch in stride on a post route for a 39 yard gain! On the next play, Randy Collins locks on Randy Branch and throws his first pick as their SS made the interception. End of 3. 23-3 lead for us. We exchange failed drives as penalties are really hurting our offense. Their backup QB, Jason Peterson, directs a masterful drive in which he passed for 86 yards and ended it with a TD toss to Grimes his leading receiver up to this point. 23-10 with 7 minutes to go. They force us to go 3 and out and start their next drive on their own 35. They drive down the field a bit before Jonathan Green makes a spectacular interception to end the drive. Randy does a great job of avoiding the rush to make the 1st pass of the next drive a completion. We run the ball for 55 yards on the drive topped by a 29 yard TD run by Wes Nelson our heralded Freshman RB! Darcey Middelton sacks the QB on the next play and punches the ball free, we recover the fumble! We are content to run the ball and the clock and finally settle for a 35 yard FG to make it 32-10. Their QB tries a long pass as the game is about to end and Dwone Secules, my heralded Freshman picks it off and returns it 17 yards. Game over. 32-10 win I'm really happy that Nelson and Maston have shown they can carry the load on the ground if needed, but I hope Alan isn't hurt too bad. Also, I think Randy does really well with the run first mentality that helps reduce the pass rush. Let's look at the box score. |

Injury Report:
Ok, I'm wondering if my HB is a wimp. Apparently, he let a little toe infection bring him out this last game. In any case, our trainer thinks he should be ok to go this week and Alan will get the rock (and some antibiotics.) Our backup C, Rusty Williams, suffered a severe groin pull and will miss at least a week. FS Brian DeMulling is still suffering with his fractured elbow and will miss this game. Everyone else is 100%. Notable Stats: Randy collins rating dropped to 186.9 which is still 3rd in the nation among starters. Alan Hood dropped to 11th in rushing yards after his shortened effort last week. Randy Branch is 2nd in the nation with 4 TD's, but his 285 yards has him only 21st in the nation for yardage. Byron Woods excellent effort has him 2nd behind Bollinger in KRB and Pancakes, but by a much slimmer margin. Tim Carney is 2nd in the nation among linemen with 3 forced fumbles. Jonathan Green, our former JC, star FS is tied for 3rd in the nation with 2 interceptions. Depth Chart Issues: My mistake, Rusty was actually our backup C who split time with the starter, but now our backup C is a scrub. I ask our Freshman Mike Walker to play backup C as well as RT and LG. No other changes. Polls: 1. Texas 4-0 2. Michigan 3-0 3. USC 4-0 4. Wisconsin 4-0 5. LSU 3-0 6. Florida 4-0 7. Iowa 3-0 8. Florida State 3-0 9. Minnesota 4-0 10. Ole Miss 4-0. Georgia dropped to a 11th despite still being 2-0. Miami dropped to 14th due to a 27-24 loss to Boston College. Purdue was smacked down by Notre Dame 48-25 and dropped to 17th. Penn State lost to Minnesota 36-30 and dropped to 16th. Auburn loss to Tennesee 22-19 and dropped to 18th. Preview and Gameplanning to come after I get back from Christmas celebrations. Preview:
Today we play Stanford. They are 3-1 (NR) and we are 4-0. Stanford's offense has been very good with an average of 453 yards per game. They are averaging almost 300 yards/game in the air. Our offense is averaging 531.5 YPG. Our defense is also ranked higher giving up 325.5 ypg compared to 376 ypg for Stanford. Our special teams are believed to be equal. Stanford is led by star receiver Jim Banks who has 30 catches for 441 yards and 3 TD's for an average of 14.7 YPC. Our defense is 18 in the nation against the pass, averaging 204.2 yards per game allowed in the air. Gameplanning: Our offensive coordinator suggests we go with a more balanced offense, that doesn't run quite as much. I'm somewhat reluctant to agree with him, but do so with a slight modification to his plan that has us run just a bit more than he wants. Our defensive coordinator wants us to run a lot of Nickel formations against this high flying offense, and I agree with his recommendations. We are 16 point favorites at home. Let's get this one started. |

We have a sell out here in Los Angeles today.
Larry Ritchie and Jim Banks connect on a 20 yard pass on the 2nd play of their drive. Banks is going to be a tough cover today as he is truly an elite receiver. Our defenders play tough once they cross our 40, and we force them to punt on their first drive. Our first drive ends in failure and we punt it into the endzone. The 1st play of their next drive, Larry Ritchie, their QB, shocks me by running for 31 yards on a play. Larry Ritchie uses his arm and his feet to drive down the field and ends the drive with a TD pass to White, the other WR. 7-0 Stanford. We have a short drive, but have to punt from in our own zone. Ritchie drives them to our 1, but we stop them 3 straight times from getting in from the 1. They then miss the FG, but we are offsides and that gives them another attempt and they connect on the FG. 10-0. We run the ball well the next drive, but fail to convert a 3rd and 5 and have to punt from midfield. End of the 1st quarter: Down 10-0. Ritchie is picking apart our secondary, and he hits Craft, his 3rd receiver, for a 41 yard TD catch. We are down 17-0  Malcolm Maston has a big highlight reel 29 yard rush to get our next drive going. He juked at least 3 guys on that run. Dick Sayers drops a key 3rd down pass, and we have to attempt a 52 yard FG which we miss. Still down 17-0. Larry Ritchie converts 3 3rd downs with his feet to keep the chains moving... But, we stop them outside the 25. They convert the 42 yard FG to make it 20-0. Randy makes a great pass on our next drive to Dick Sayers down the field for a 56 yard gain. Hood runs it in from 11 yards out on the next play to make it 20-7. We needed that drive to give some confidence going into the half. Our defense comes up big with a 3 and out and gets us the ball back with 2 minutes in the half on our own 33. Randy hits a big pass to TE Estes Henderson for 33 yards to get us in FG range. However, he hits a few more passes, then hits Alan Hood with a flair pass and Hood runs over a defender and into the endzone for a 6 yard TD! 20-14 just before the half. Halftime: 20-14. Collins stats at the half: 9 of 14 passes for 150 yards and 1 TD. Standford's Ritchie's stats: 9 of 17 for 199 yards 2 TD 0 INT and 5 carries for 41 yards. We get the ball to start the 2nd half. Despite, his initial wish to throw it more, our offensive coordinator seems determined to run the ball. We run the ball 8 times before Collins throws a 9 yard screen to Maston. However, it works and we methodically drive down the field until Bennie Brady throws a 2 yard TD to our FB Renaldo Pugh. Collins was out due to a cramp. We ran 55 yards and only passed 25 yards on that drive. 21-20 lead for us. That drive consumed over 7 minutes. We force a 3 and out and get the ball on our own 35 after a nice punt return by Jonathan Green. We exchange failed drives, but their punter makes a horrible kick and we get the ball on their 29 for a short field. Unfortunately, we fail to connect on a 3rd and 6 and we settle for a 27 yard FG to make it 24-20. End of 3 quarters: 24-20 lead for us. We've only given us 5 yards passing in the 3rd quarter. Jonathan Green comes up with a 26 yard punt return to give us good field position inside the 48. We put together a balanced drive which ends in a 10 yard TD pass from Randy to Henderson our TE! 31-20! Jonathan Green intercepts the 2nd pass of their next drive which was a long pass. We then proceed to run, run, and run some more. We run the ball 11 times for 77 yards ending with a 3 yard TD run by Alan Hood. 38-20. That took the clock down to 2 minutes left. Game over. 38-20 win! We played horribly the 1st half, but had a tremendous second half. We only gave up 37 passing yards in the 2nd half, and only 82 yards total in the 2nd half. Alan Hood had another very good game as Malcolm Maston continues to be a very impressive #2 back who is a nice contrast to Alan's power. Randy continues to really impress for a freshman QB. He isn't making many mistakes, and he is being more decisive with his decisions and not giving up as many sacks any more. Of course, our Offensive Coordinator is taking the pressure off by running it a lot. Let's take a look at the box score. |

DARN DARN! Alan Hood's Heisman Trophy campaign has been cut short. He is academically ineligible! Also, my Freshman CB Wayne Cole has been declared ineligible. They are both big losses, but I think we can win even without them.

Notable Stats:
Randy's QB Rtg is now 183.3 which is 3rd among active starters. His 108 attempts is lowest among the top 10 on the list. Depth Chart Issues: Malcolm will start at HB due to Alan's suspension. Malcolm's speed will certainly bring a different dimension to the offense. Wes Nelson becomes the primary backup HB. Let's hope the true freshman can shine. Robert Rolle, the sophomore CB, becomes our primary nickel back. This is a significant drop from Cole. I decide to leave the injured guys out this upcoming week to heal further. Poll: 1. Texas 5-0 2. Oregon is 2-1 and not ranked. We are now 2nd in both polls. Our offense is much better than theirs. They only average 396.3 yards per game most of which is through the air. Our defense is better as they are giving up 433.3 YPG. Their run defense is 12th in the nation and will be a big challenge for our new starting HB. Gameplanning: I hate to do it, but with Alan out, it's time to lean more on the Frosh. I tell the offensive coordinator to plan on throwing it at least 5-10 more times today. We'll be going with a much more true 50-50 split on the run-pass play calling. Our defense will feature more of 4-3 package than last game as Oregon does have some credible running backs.

This game is on the road and the Ducks have over 43,000 fans here today.
They get the ball first, and drive down the length of the field with relative ease. Looks like another slow start for our defense. Bob Smith their HB ends the drive with a 5 yard TD. Smith had 43 yards rushing on the drive. We start off with an 18 yard strike from Randy to Randy. A few plays later, Collins is unable to convert a 3rd and 9 and we have to punt. Fortunately, we hold them to 3 and out. Randy is showing some inaccuracy this game, and it kills our drive after a few plays. We exchange a few failed drives. On our next drive, Randy is really playing well completing 3 passes in a row, before he decides to scramble. Unfortunately, he got popped by the SS and was injured on the play. Our trainer says he is almost certainly done for the day. Bennie will have to make it happen. Bennie isn't able to convert the 3rd and 6 the next play and we hit a 49 yard FG. 7-3 Oregon. End of the 1st, we are down 7-3. We stop them after a few plays. Our next drive, Malcolm is stuffed on the 1st run, but on his 2nd run, he jukes two guys, then runs down the sideline for a LONG TD! 71 yard rush! 10-7. Malcolm is such an explosive player. The next drive they get to midfield, before Darcey Middleton sacks the QB and causes a fumble! We recover. Bennie can't connect on a 3rd and 5, and we settle for a 50 yard FG. 13-7 lead for us. Bennie is having a hard time hitting open guys, and we are exchanging failed drives. We've been shuttng Flores down, but he scrambles on a play and then throws it just before crossing the endline for a 46 yard pass to his man. Then, two plays later he hits Myers his best WR for a 10 yard TD catch. 14-13 game with 3 minutes left in the half. On our next drive, Cliff Bell makes a great leaping catch to save Bennie's high throw and convert a 3rd and 6. We get just across midfield, before being stopped and having to punt. Halftime: 14-13 lead for Oregon. Randy Collins stats: 5 for 9 for 74 yards. 0 TD 0 INT. Bennie Brady: 1 of 4 for 8 yards. On the first drive of the second half, Bennie converts a 3rd and 7 with a pass to Branch. He then converts a 3rd and 3 by scrambling for 4 himself. He gets us across midfield, but we are stopped outside the 40 yard line. Bill Hampton has a huge sack to stop their drive, and we get the ball in good field position thanks to a decent return by Jonathan Green. Our Freshman tackle, Mike Walker has a holding penalty that negates a 22 yard pass completion. However, Bennie comes back and throws a 54 yard pass. But, it is also negated by a holding call on our center! Ugh. Penalties killed us this drive. Our defense holds them to a 3 and out to get us back the ball. Renaldo Pugh our FB is injured on the 1st play of the drive, and it looks potentially serious. Bennie does a decent job of leading a balanced drive in which we march 49 yards, but that was 5 yards too short. We settle for the short FG. 16-14 lead. We hold them to 3 and out as the 3rd quarter ends. End of 3, 16-14 lead for us. We exchange failed drives, but a poor punt gives us excellent field position on their 24! Unfortunately, we can't move the ball at all and we have to settle for a 42 yard FG. 19-14 lead. Malcolm is really getting stuffed. They put together a good drive, but we stop them at the 27 yad line. They miss the 44 yard FG!! Unfortunately, Bennie is hurt slightly, and our 3rd string QB throws an interception on his first play. Flores hits a 55 yard TD pass on the next play! They fail the 2 pt conversion, and it is now 20-19 Oregon. We have 6 minutes left to win this thing.. Bennie is back, and he starts off with a 12 yard strike to Cliff Bell. On 2nd and 9, his long pass to Branch is overthrown. Bennie's next throw is towards Branch, but the MLB intercepts it! We force a 3 and out and get the ball back with about 4 minutes left... A personal foul on the punt return gives us good position on our own 40. We drive down the field but are unable to convert a 4th and 8 from the 38. It looks like we are going to lose.. We force them to punt, but Jonathan Green is unable to return it all the way. Game over. 20-19 loss at Oregon Malcolm Maston has shown me that he is a true homerun threat, but he is an all or nothing guy. He had the 71 yard TD, but had about 35 yards on his other 20 carries. He was great as a #2 back, but I miss Alan's undeniable consistency. Let's look at the box score. |

Injury Report:
Randy Collins has a severely bruised Sternum. My team doctor is recommending playing him, and I will do so. C Rusty Willams and FS Brian DeMulling are both still injured and I will rest them one more week. Notable Stats: Despite his poor short showing, Randy Collins has a QB Rtg of 178.8 which is still 2nd among starters. Only Texas' QB Lyle Scales has a better rating. Lyle is a Junior. Lyle has a 182.7 rating. He has thrown for 1,516 yards 68.7% 14 TD's and 3 INT's. Despite the missed game, Alan is still 14th in the nation in rushing. Our tackle Byron Woods now leads the nation in KRB's with 20. He also has 13 pancakes and hasn't allowed a sack all year. Depth Chart Issues: No changes. Randy will start, but with his injury, I'll try to go with a less pass intensive offense, but this could be problematic with our all or nothing HB's. Polls: 1. Texas 6-0 2. Wisconsin 6-0 3. Our offense is 8th and our defense is 13th. Their star player is QB John Collins who has completed 54% of his passes for 1209 yards with 11 TD's and 4 Interceptions. Their HB is also quite good and he is averaging over 120 YPG. R. Hall will be watched closely this game. In the secondary, we have to watch out for F. Brown who is among the nation's leaders with 4 interceptions. Gameplan: We are going to go with a balanced offense and defense, with a slight emphasis on running the ball. |

Washington State has over 36,000 fans here today.
On their first drive, Russ Hall their star RB has a huge screen play that gets them inside the 10. However, our defense is excellent the next 3 plays and we hold them to a 23 yard FG. 3-0 Washington State. I let out a sigh of relief as Randy scrambles for 4 yards, but gets up ok. He helps us drive within their 20, and we convert a 4th and 1 to get a first. The next play, Randy connects with Randy for a 14 yard TD pass on a long curl route! 7-3 USC. Randy was 3 of 3 for 35 yards on the drive. John Collins leads them down the field methodically and hits Brent Lincoln for a 30 yard TD on a blown pass coverage. 10-7 Washington State. Randy leads us down the field with 2 great plays including a 21 yard Screen pass to Maston, but penalties just kill us inside the 20. We settle for a 45 yard FG. 10-10. End of the 1st: 10-10 with Wash State driving. The long drive ends with a 42 yard pass from John Collins to Brent Lincoln for their 2nd TD. 17-10. Randy guides the team on a 72 yard drive in which we passed for 58 yards and ran for 14 yards including a 2 yard TD run by Renaldo Pugh our FB. 17-17. DE Jon Stover lays a big hit on their HB and forces a fumble! We recover. inside their 35. We cap the short drive with a 11 yard TD pass from Randy to HB Wes Nelson!! 24-17 despite the XP hitting the crossbar. We stop them on 3 and out except that a roughing the passer penalty keeps the drive alive. That ends up being very costly as John Collins connects with Bob Hand for a 53 yard TD just 3 plays later. 24-24 with 3 minutes left in the half. On the first play, Randy Collins executes a beautiful play fake and throws a perfect rainbow for a 59 yard completion to Sayers! A few plays later, Randy is sacked on a 3rd and 1 for a loss of 4 and we settle for a 29 yard FG. 27-24 lead for us. 34 seconds left in the half. End of the half: 27-24 lead for USC. Randy Collins stats: 14 of 15 passes for 230 yards, 2 TD's 0 INT's. 2 sacks for 5 yards. John Collins stats: 9 of 11 passes for 205 yards and 3 TD's. We drive down the field, but Sayers fumbles the ball after catching it just inside the 20, and the Cougars recover. 2 plays later John Collins hits a 74 yard pass to his 4th receiver Boselli for a TD! something has to change with our pass coverage as we are being burnt deep often. 31-27 Washington State. Randy drives us within the 30, but can't convert a 3rd and 6. We attempt a fake FG in which Witherspoon throws it to Demtrin Brady, but Brady can't catch the errant pass. John Collins hits another long pass to Bob Hand for 40 yards. Sheesh. Fortunately, we stop them on the next few plays and they have to settle for a 42 yard FG attempt which is wide right! Still 31-27. On the first play of our next drive, Randy Collins is hurt and has to leave the game. On the next play, our 3rd stringer McGeoghan hits Bell for a 77 yard TD pass! Is anyone playing defense today? 34-31 lead for us. This is unbelievable. John Collins hits Boselli for a long 47 yard catch on the first play of their next drive. A 82 yard drive (11 on the ground and 71 in the air) is capped by a 3 yrd run by Hall for a TD. 38-34. End of 3: 38-34 lead for Washington State. Bennie makes a terrible throw on 3rd and 6 despite Randy Branch being open, and the OLB intercepts it. 2 plays later Sam Cole intercepts John Collins pass!!! The next play Bennie Brady hits Cliff Bell in stride for a 68 yard TD pass!! 41-38. They drive down the field, but we stop them outside the 25. They miss the 42 yard FG wide right!!! 11 minutes left and we lead 41-38. We drive 77 yards in 6 plays ending with a 5 yard TD on left tackle by Malcolm Maston. 48-38 lead for us. Their first play of the next drive start with a big sack by Bill Hampton. We sack the QB the next play as well, but he converts 3rd and 24 with a 27 yard pass to his HB. Jon Stover gets a great sack for 15 yards a few plays later. We get them in another 3rd and 24 the next play, and they can't convert. They end up punting. 6 minutes left in the game. We run the ball 11 times ina row, and burn 4 minutes of clock before kicking the 53 yard FG. 51-38 lead. They drive across the 50, but time runs out. Game over. 51-38. The positive: Randy Collins had a spectacular game. Wes Nelson, the true freshman, shows that he deserves the starters job as he got more carries despite being the 2nd stringer. The negative: Our defense looked terrible this game. Yes, we were playing a very good QB, but we still looked very bad on defense. Let's look at the box score. |

They have the 3rd best offense in the nation so far. Our offense is #2 in the nation. They have the 58th best defense. We have the 42nd best defense. Their star player is QB Chad Neufeld. Chad is a Junior who is projected as one of the best in the nation. Chad's current stats are 174.1 rating, 69% complete for 1573 yards with 14 TD's and 3 INT's. He also has 20 carries for 126 yards and a TD. Their MLB is a senior who is going to play in the NFL for certain. He has 59 tackles, 9 for a loss, and 3 sacks on the year, and he is a rue intimidator. He's had a 15 tackle game last week and he is playing very well right now. Gameplan: My coaches are recommending a new pass heavy offense that I devised a few weeks ago. I'm going to go with my offensive coordinator's wishes.. Not surprisingly, my defensive coordinator wants us to use a lot of nickel and dime and focus on stopping the pass. I agree. |

I'm pleasantly surprised to see our MLB Clifton Lindell get an interception on the 3rd play of the game. Randy scrambles for it on 3rd and 13. He gets 8 yards, but we have to punt. They drive inside the 30, before Sam Cole intercepts an old route and returns it for 20 yards! We drive 30 yards before stalling and end up settling for a FG. 3-0 lead with 7 minutes in the 1st quarter left. Don Foreman caps off a 65 yard drive in which they rushed for 48 yards with a short rushing TD. They miss the Extra point! 6-3 lead. End of 1: 6-3 lead for Washington with us driving. Randy Branch suffers a neck injury whenhe is hit in the endzone! He drops the ball. On the next play, Randy Collins connects on a 15 yard TD with Insley our 4th WR. 10-6 lead with 14 minutes in the 1st half left. Tim Carney forces a fumble on a big hit on the RB, but they recover. However, we force a 3 and out. We seem to have rattled Neufeld with those 2 interceptions early. We drive 78 yards in 3 plays capped by a 27 yard TD run by Wes Nelson! 17-6. Tim Carney drives Neufeld into the ground.. Neufeld is hurt, and it doesn't look like he is going to return! After exchanging failed drives, Randy Collins directs a 11 play 81 yard drive in which we gained 68 yards in the air. The drive ends with a 4 yard TD pass to our FB Renaldo Pugh. 24-6 with 3 minutes left in the half. On their next drive, MLB LaVern Alexander intercepts the ball at midfield. With just a minute left, Randy leads a fairly good 2 minute drill to get us inside the 33. We settle for a 50 yard FG just before the end of the half. 27-6. Halftime: 27-6 lead! Randy Collins Stats: 20 of 26 passes for 249 yards 2 TD's 0 INT's. Sacked once for 2 yards. Sheesh, Randy leads a good drive, but on the 5th play, a toss, he is hurt without being touched. Our trainer thinks his day is done. Bennie proceeds to get sacked twice in a row, and we end up punting. Most of the 3rd quarter is a defensive struggle with relatively little ball movement. End of 3: 27-6 lead for us. In the 4th quarter, Nat Jackson, their backup QB hits the TE for a 56 yard play and a few plays later Don Foreman, their HB, runs it in. 27-13 with 8 minutes left in the game. Bennie leads a good drive down the field, but our 4th string QB Mike Witherspoon throws the 1 yard TD to end the drive. 34-13. Nat Jackson leads a quick explosive drive which ends with a TD pass to the TE. 34-20 with 3 minutes left. We run the ball down the field and run the clock down to 30 seconds before punting. Game over. 34-20 win for us. Positives: Randy Collins had an excellent game before he was hurt. Negatives: I'm facing the high likelihood that Randy is too fragile to play every week. Hopefully, as he develops physically, he will be less injury prone. Let's look at the boxscore. |

Excellent news!
Both RB Alan Hood and CB Wayne Cole have been re-instated. We lost 4th WR Marquis Insley to suspension, but that isn't a huge loss. That is true in large part, because WR Randy Branch isn't hurt too seriously and he is probable for this week. Injury Report: FB Renaldo Pugh broke a bone in his hand and is doubtful for this week. WR Randy Branch has a neck contusion, but is probable for this week. OG Troy Johnson has pulled his Quadriceps and is doubtful for this week. OG Stephen Goss has dislocated his elbow and may miss the rest of the season! C Rusty Williams is still fighting a pulled groin, but he could play this week. DE Terry Smith has elbow bursitis and is questionable for this week. Depth Chart Issues: Alan Hood re-gains his spot as the #1 back. I think Malcolm is a better compliment so he stays at #2 and Wes will be the #3 back for now. Chukky Odom takes over the starting FB spot for the injured Pugh. Our starters are still good along the offensive line, but our depth is seriously stretch now. As a result, I have Williams come back from his injury as the primary backup at C. Walker is going to start at RG. Our backup guards are both relatively poor players. I rest Terry Smith as we have excellent depth at DE.
