A Fictional FOF2007 Dynasty
Welcome!
Hey everyone! I got the itch to start a new dynasty and have it a little less formal than the last one I wrote. I hope anyone who reads the dynasty enjoys it and leaves a comment or two! Set-Up I'm gonna start off by running a preference draft for the first season. I changed only a few sliders, hoping to get the worst possible team I can without having to cut the whole team or anything. I slid my QB slider all the way to the left, and then slid the K slider all the way to the right. I also moved the Pot/Exp slider to the right a little, just so I don't get any young guys that look promising. Then I'll just quick sim the 2006 season with the AI handling everything, then I will take over at the end of the season. House Rules I haven't ever really played with house rules. This time, I'm going to be as strict as I possibly can and make myself follow them. It's gonna take a little while to get used to, but I got sick of having a winning season twenty straight times. Hopefully this will be a little more challenging. I've taken a few of these rules from others, so thank you if you were the one who came up with it! Injuries: 200 Cap Increase: Thanks to yabanci and SkyDog, it seems that a 60-90 cap range will allow the AI teams to keep more players and not let an abundance of talent into the F/A pool. So, 60 to 90 it is. Coaches/Scouts: I can only hire new coaches/scouts if the previous coach or scout's contract has ended (or retired). Summer League: I can only send a player picked in the 4th round or later to summer camp. Franchise Tag: I can only use the tag one time on any specific player. Re-Negotiation: The player has to be in his last year, or a franchise player, in order to re-negotiate, and there can only be two re-negotiations per year. A little twist is that if I have a losing season the previous year, I can't re-negotiate with any player with a want winner rating over 70. Free Agency: Hopefully the cap increase will help here as well, but I'm adopting the "want winner" rating rule here too. If I have a losing season, I can't offer a deal to any player with a want winner rating over 70, 80 if the player was on my team the previous year. Only two offers per week to players on a different team the previous year, as well as two offers each week to players that were on my team the previous year. I can also only make one offer to a player. If I get outbid, then I can't adjust my offer. Lastly, I can only make one offer to a RFA each stage. I think that's about it. If I think of any others, I will update here. Let's Begin! My preference draft is complete! Let's sim this season and then we'll begin my quest to create a football dynasty! Ok, so my draft ended, I saved, and then quick-simmed through the 2006 season a few times, waiting until I had a losing record so I could start with the "want winner rating" rule in effect. It took a few times, but I finally ended up with a 6-10 record.
The 2006 season ended up with my arch rival New England Patriots winning the Super Bowl. It's gonna be tough playing them twice a year. Miami also went 10-6, so this coming seaon should be challenging. Here are the standings from the 2006 quick-simmed season. Code:
Before I click the end season button, my next post will go through our current roster and figure out the plan for this off-season. Last edited by JetsIn06 : 08-12-2007 at 11:39 PM. |

My first impression of my roster...we suck. We have a few excellent players, but most of them are getting up there in age. Our top three players are in 8th year or later. We got our work cut out for us.
First I'm gonna take a look at our roster by position group, and then I'll take a look at last seasons team summary page to diagnose specific problem areas and priortize what we need to do to get past Miami and New England in 2007. 2006 End of Season Roster Breakdown Code:

Off-Season Priorities
So with all the individual ratings and stats out of the way, I need to decide how I'm going to improve this team. We have a lot of weaknesses, not a lot of players to help us fix those weaknesses. What are my priorities for the next few years? 1) Defensive Line (Run stopping) 2) Offensive Line (Run blocking) 3) Secondary (Man-to-Man) 4) Running Backs (Two-back system) 5) Linebackers (ILB-Run stopping, OLB-Pass Rushing) 6) Quarterback (Short Passing, Efficient) 7) Wide Receivers (YAC, Avoid Drops, Courage) Obviously, some situations will present themselves that will make me get away from this list, but my goal is to build a solid core of players that will turn our team into a contender. |

2007 Off-Season: Pre F/A
I clicked the end season button, now the fun begins! I start the off-season with 32 players under contract, 16 RFA's and 6 of my player's entering F/A. I'm also already under the gun because I see that a few of my more solid players will become free agents afer this coming season. I guess we'll deal with it when the time comes. Retirements G Eddie Dennis DT Dana Tate Summer League Because my receiving corps is pretty dreadful, I decide to send a favorite of mine, Korey Porter (15/42), to summer camp. I'm pretty sure he's gonna end up being my starting split end, so hopefully this helps him out a little bit. Franchise Tag I basically have two options here. I can tag my 5th year C, Nick Shields (56/71), which would cost $5,300,000, or my 6th year, projected starting NT, Zack Rellford (50/50) for $8,160,000. I decide to franchise Rellford, because I think it's going to be easier to find a replacement C if Shields ends up signing somewhere else. Let's hope he doesn't. Cuts Well, no one wanted any of my defensive guys when I offered trades, so I cut these two players. DE Fred Amarante 53/57 WLB Marshall Hansen 33/33 Same deal with the offensive players, but I'm going to keep these guys around for now. Re-Negotiations I decided to see what Zack Rellford (50/50), the NT that I applied the franchise tag on, would want if I gave him a long term deal. He wants $15,650,000 over 4 years, so I decide to give it to him. It's tough to come across a big NT that can actually play, so right now I think it's worth it. I also save $6,000,000 on the cap this year, as he would have made about $8,000,000 with the one-year tender. RFA Offers With my one allowed RFA offer, I decide to sign our hopeful starting QB of 2007, Shawn Mahoney (16/46), to a 3-year deal worth $3.7 million. Boo hiss, the Jets.
Seriously though, good luck on the dynasty. Interesting that we have opposite philosophies on offense... I prefer to build strong passing attacks with a corps of good wide receivers and on D, I like the 4-3 over the 3-4, though I'll admit to the 3-4 being seriously intriguing.

There are a few players out on the Free Agency market that look pretty good. With all of the teams in pretty amazing cap shape, I expect to see some really intense bidding wars going on. I don't know how involved in Free Agency I will be yet. Perhaps I'll get a few quality player's at cheap positions, and maybe make one big splash to get someone. Expired Contract Offers I allow myself to offer two of my players who's contracts have just expired on my team each stage, so I decide to offer C Nick Shields (56/71) a deal first. He looks like he's going to be a very important peice of the offensive line. He's only looking for a one-year deal, but I offer him a 3-year deal worth $5.78 million. With my final allowed offer of this stage, I offer Bernard Atkins (47/47), a 10th year run-stopping SS who is also a mentor, a 2-year deal woth $2.3 million. RFA Offers RB Monty Beyer (25/33) signs a 2-year deal for $970,000. Free Agent Offers With $26 million in cap room, I can probably get one or two pretty decent players in Free Agency. Unfortunately, there aren't many quality defensive linemen on the market, so instead, I focus on the offensive line. I make an offer to 7th year player Conrad Willard (61/75), a LG who was injured all of 2006. It's a little risky, but he can play either LG or RG and will provide an instant upgrade on the offensive line as long as he stays healthy. We offer him a 4-year deal worth $13.60 million. With our other allowed offer, we focus on the defensive side of the ball by offering a 2-year, $8.82 million deal to SLB Donovan Castle (64/64), a dominant run-blocker and above average pass-rusher. That is interesting. I've always been a fan of grind-it-out, long drive, run up the middle football. Airing it out just doesn't do it for me. One thing that I never really thought of, is the 3-4 makes it a little more challenging for me, simply because I'm so anal that I won't allow myself to have players on my FOF team that don't fit the real-life size requirements, even if it doesn't mean anything in the game. It makes it a little more interesting I guess. Plus, I absolutely love the 3-4 in real life. |

Previous Offer Results Well, C Nick Shields (56/71) has signed his deal, so that feels good. I really like this guy and think he's gonna be around for a while. G Conrad (61/75) is still thinking about it, and we're the only ones who have contacted him. Our backup safety from last season, Atkins (47/47) is also still thinking. What worries me is that SLB Castle (64/64) has been contacted by 4 other teams. According to the F/A page, the Giants are the favored team to get him as of now. With my house rules in place, I can't up my offer. Just gotta hope he picks us. Expired Contract Offers I offered RB Devin Hambly (39/39) a 2-year deal worth $2.29 million. RFA Offers CB Bennie Zarante (17/52) signs a 2-year deal woth $970,000. Free Agent Offers Wanting to grab a skill position player on the offense before they all disappear, I make an offer to 6th year WR Glenn Collins (49/50). He'll add some much needed talent to the offense and hopefully help our QB get through his second season in the NFL. He gets offered a 5-year deal worth $20.48 million. I then made an offer to ILB Lawrence Allen (53/53) previously from San Diego. He's been contacted by at least tewnty teams, so we made a slightly higher offer than we wanted to in order to get him in NY. We offer him a 1-year deal worth $1.14 million. |

Previous Offer Results Crap. Glenn Collins (49/50) ended up signing with the Redskins. I really liked him too. Oh well. Devin Hambly (39/39), a running back from my team last year, has re-signed with us. Expired Contract Offers There isn't really anyone else on my team from last year who I want to re-sign. RFA Offers I sign TE Grady Connell (13/37) to a 2-year deal worth $1,000,000. He'll probably be my long snapper, and has some nice upside as a receiving TE. Doesn't block too well though. Free Agent Offers I still need a DE to play opposite of Sherman Hopkins (74/74), not to mention one to replace him soon because of his age. I want to offer DE Mack Doyle (54/54), a good run-defending defensive end, a short deal because I think of his as a stop-gap kind of player. Just someone who can hold the fort until I find a replacement in the draft. However, he wants a 5-year deal and has three other teams making long-term offers. I offer him a two-year deal worth $8.5 million. We'll see if he likes it. Because the other WR I offered a deal to didn't accept it, I offer WR Kent Briggs (43/43) a 3-year deal worth $2.89 million. |

Previous Offer Results Awesome! Mack Doyle (54/54), who I didn't think would want to sign with us because he wanted a long term deal, accepted! He'll be the starting DE this coming season. Also, One of our backup safeties from last season, Bernard Atkins (47/47) has re-signed with us. Expired Contract Offers None. RFA Offers I offered backup safety Clyde Thomason (27/42) a 3-year deal for $1.93 million. He accepted. Free Agent Offers Hmm. The Free Agent pool is running kind of dry. With my house rule of not signing anyone with a high want winner rating, some of the better player's are unavailable. I guess I'll pick up some role players. I make an offer to RB Rob Beatty (31/38), a good power back who will be good on the goal line and in short yardage situations. I make an offer of a 3-year deal worth $2.45 million. I want to build a strong special teams unit, so I make an offer to the hard hitting CB William Hodges (33/33), a dominant kick returner and below average defender. He gets an offer of $2.79 million over three years. Last edited by JetsIn06 : 08-13-2007 at 10:20 AM. |

Previous Offer Results More good news, ILB Lawrence Allen (57/57) has signed with us! He should bring some extra oomph to our pretty crappy defense. Rob Beatty (33/38), the short-yardage back I offered a deal to, has also signed with us. Expired Contract Offers None. RFA Offers I offered bckup ILB Warren Logan a 1-year deal for $520,000. He accepts. Free Agent Offers As I stated before, I don't like the FB that was here last season. He has a high overall ratng, but isn't good at run-blocking, which is really what I want. FB Benjamin McDaniel (56/56) is still out here on the F/A market, so I offer him a 4-year deal worth $8.48 million. It seems like my only competion with this player is Miami, a division rival, who offered him $8.12 million over 4-years. I also offer OLB Hardy Grasmanis, a pass rusher, a 2-year deal worth $1.6 million. |

Previous Offer Results Unfortunately, OLB Donovan Castle (64/64) signed with Miami even though I tossed much more money at him. Oh well. CB and KR William Hodges (33/33) did sign with me though, so I have a little more depth and a lethal KR threat. In bigger news, G Conrad Willard (61/75) ended up signing with us as well, so good news there! Expired Contract Offers None. RFA Offers I offered DE Scottie Bonnette (27/38) a 2-year deal worth $1.52 million, and he accepts. Free Agent Offers I love having a dual set of TE threats, so I offer a 3-year deal worth $2.57 million. He's also an excellent special teams player and long snapper, which would allow me to cut my current long snapper who basically does nothing else. I'm running out of cap room ($11.42 million left) and there isn't much left in the F/A market, so I only make one offer this week. Hopefully some other guys I made offers to sign soon. |

Previous Offer Results Two more signings today! OLB Harry Grasmanis (46/46) signed his contract with us, and FB Benjamin McDaniel (60/60) joined the team as well. These two should have big roles this coming season. Expired Contract Offers WR Derrick Kirk (17/32) is offered and signs a 1-year deal for $430,000. RFA Offers None. Free Agent Offers Because my projected starting QB is only entering his 2nd season, I offered a 2-year deal to 8th year QB Chuck Hill. He is a mentor and has pretty decent ratigs. The deal would be worth $1.82 million over the two years. Last edited by JetsIn06 : 08-13-2007 at 02:45 PM. |

Previous Offer Results Two more signings! It's week 9 of F/A, so with time running out for players to decide, WR kent Briggs (46/46) has signed with the team. He will most likely start for us on opening day, and brings some much needed talent to the WR position. TE Juan Parker (52/61) also signs and will be used a lot in 2-TE sets, hopefully opening up some space for our starting TE. Expired Contract Offers None. RFA Offers None. Free Agent Offers With cap room running lower and the free agency period coming to a close, I'm going to start focusing on the draft and then fill in any other holes after the draft. 2007 Off-Season: Pre-Draft
As free agency comes to a close, I need to take a look at our squad, as well as the draft preview, to figure out some specific player's I'd like to target, as well as specific positions that need filled or upgraded. Let's take a look at our team first. Needs & Upgrades Backup QB: We signed Chuck Hill (22/32) in the off-season to be a mentor, and he could possibly be our second string QB, but I'd like to have a player that's slightly better, just in case our 2nd year projected started Shawn Mahoney (16/46) doesn't progress as nicely as we hope. Plus, we don't currently have a 3rd QB, so we need to add another, but will probably do it in late Free Agency. Draft Priority: F Starting WR: Kent Briggs (46/46) was added in free agency and was a huge upgrade, but if we could another threat to start opposite of him, we'd upgrade our passing attack from basically nothing to fairly solid. However, upgrading the passing game isn't up there on my priority list right now. Draft Priority: C Future LT: Ricky Downs (52/52) is currently a solid starter, but he's in his 11th season, so a dropoff in talent could be coming soon. I'd like to have a player progress under him. Perhaps I can find one in this draft? Draft Priority: B Backup NT: Having Zack Rellford (50/50) as our starting NT is definitely a good thing, but I'd like to have at least one fairly solid player to spell him on occasion. Draft Priority: C Future DE: We need to add a backup DE, but with starting RDE Sherman Hopkins (74/74) in his 11th season, I'd like to add a capable backup who could can take over when Hopkins retires. Draft Priority: B Starting CB: With Howie Joyaux (51/51) entering his 10th year, and no one else really capable of starting on the other side of the field, CB is a desperate need for us. I'd love to add an elite CB early in the draft. Draft Priority: A Future SS: Both Orlando Graham (75/75) and Bernard Atkins (47/47) are getting up there in age, in their 14th and 10th years, respectively. Adding a good backup that can take over next season would be awesome. Draft Priority: C |

With our team out of the way, let's take a look at the upcoming players that will be chosen in the 2007 draft. We chooose 8th, so to begin, I'll take a look at my Top 10 players of the draft. Code:
Out of the Top 10, there a few guys that I really like. I'm not a big fan of the top two tackles, mostly because of their size. I really like the two safeties, and love the cornerback. Hopefully one of them drops to me. If they don't, I'll most likely end up trading down a little to pick up an extra draft pick or two. Last edited by JetsIn06 : 08-13-2007 at 04:22 PM. |

Here is a shot of R.J. Lando's player card, a CB out of Syracuse that I'm hoping to land witht he 8th pick in the draft. He would instantly upgrade a pretty awful group of cornerbacks, and would start Week 1. I took this before I interviewed him. He came out Overrated but his bars still look good. As of now, he's still my main target with the 8th pick. Last edited by JetsIn06 : 08-13-2007 at 05:14 PM. |

After using all of my interviews, I've determinded that this draft class is pretty bad. The top few players are good, but there is a huge drop off in talent after the top 7 or 8 players. I plan on staying at 8 to take Lando, but then perhaps I could either trade up back into the first round, or maybe even trade my 2nd round pick for a 2nd rounder next year. We'll see what happens. |

2007 Off-Season: NFL Draft 1st Round
And so the draft begins! My favorite time of the year, and my favorite part of the game. I'll do a quick description of each pick and how I think he'll impact the team. 1. Cincinnati takes WR Bob Covington (34/68). They definitely needed a WR, so I see why they took one, but Covington wasn't eveb listed as a Top 10 player. There was a higher ranked WR on the board, but maybe the bars were a little worse than Covington's? Either way, Covington looks like he'll be a good player, but maybe a slight reach. 2. Chicago takes Byron Lagana (51/85), a tackle out of Kansas State. He's short for a tackle (6'0), but he looks like he's going to be a great player for Chicago. He joins the teams other tackle of the same name, Byron Hofmann (69/69), to create one of the best offensive lines in the game. 3. Arizona chooses Walt Connell (55/73), the star running back out of Virginia. He seems like a good pick for Arizona, a team with a pretty good offensive line, a great QB in Russell Herndon (50/69), and a pretty much unstoppable secondary on defense. They should have a much better season in 2007. I'm starting to get nervous. I have 4 more picks to get through before my team picks, and I still really want CB R.J. Lando. However, New Orleans has the 5th pick of the draft and they need a RB, S, and a CB. There are two higher rated safeties, so hopefully they choose one of them rather than Lando, but I'm still nervous. I'm not willing to trade up to get in front of them, so I'm just going to have to hope they go with someone else. 4. Piitsburgh takes RB Desmond Dunn (60/60), a fully developed product of Oregon. He'll try to jumpstart a fairly weak offense who has a young QB and a very young and inexperienced offensive line. 5. New Orleans, who I'm nervous about, ends up taking S Lorenzo Kuhnert (49/76), a star player who will add to an otherwise solid secondary in New Orleans. I'm glad that Lando is still there for me! 6. With the 6th pick, Tennessee takes S Rick Fulcher (42/78), another excellent DB who will add to an impressive secondary. 7. The team with the pick before mine, the Green Bay Packers, select T Gary McIver (40/71), a strong, road-grader type offensive linemen who joins a young and inexperienced line. 8. My pick! R.J. Lando (47/80), a Syracuse product who excels in man-to-man coverage and is a ballhawk, is the choice here. His only true weakness is play diagnosis, but let's hope that he'll play just as strong in the NFL as I think he will. Here is his player card: 9. With the 9th pick, Oakland selects TE Randy Henson (60/79), a big tight end who will make an immediate impact on the Raiders. 10. To round out the Top 10, the Eagles take WR Neal Zimmerman (34/46), and as you can see, the drop off in talent from the 9th to the 10th pick was huge. The Eagles get Zimmerman who at first glance, seems like he will be a 3rd WR in the NFL. I'll continue the draft and update with my draft picks as they happen. I might try and trade up if the oppurtunity presents itself. Another idea is to trade back to pick up an extra pick and a later 2nd round pick, and then trade the 2nd rounder for a 2008 2nd rounder. For my first pick, I'm extremely happy with Lando, and hope he turns out to be a great player for many years. Last edited by JetsIn06 : 08-13-2007 at 08:52 PM. |

I ended up not even thinking about trading into the first round. There were a few players that I liked but I didn't want to trade away next year's picks to get somone that isn't really worth it. I'm still interested in possibly moving down toward the bottom half of the 2nd round to pick up a 3rd of 4th rounder, and then trading the 2nd rounded for a 2008 2nd rounder. At the start of the 2nd round, there are three players that I'm interested in drafting. I have the 7th pick this round, and if I stay at that spot, I'd be interested in taking: WR Ike Delgado, a pretty good WR with an excellent Getting Downfield rating, and my scout also tells me he is very underrated. T J.C. Greene, a run-blocking tackle with good size. He's not developed very much and is listed as overrated, but I still like him. DT Preston Maltman, a good run stuffing NT with good size and good technique. Scouted as hard to read. WR Delgado was chosen by Tennessee with the 5th pick in the 2nd round, so I'm left with either Greene, a T, or Maltmann, a DT. I choose T J.C. Greene (18/60). He'll need some development time, but if he pans out he should be a pretty good player. Here is his player card: |

2007 Off-Season: NFL Draft 2nd Round (Cont.)
I'm thinking about trading back up into the 2nd round to draft the DT, Preston Maltmann. If he is gone, there is also a solid OLB, Hunter Settelmaier, who I like. If I traded my 3rd and 4th round picks, I could move up to the bottom of the 2nd round, the 28th pick more specifically. I'm gonna sim down to the 20th pick and see if these two are left. At 2(20), both players are still available. Maltmann is the top DT available, and Settelmaier is the third best OLB available. Well, I simmed ahead one pick, and Maltmann was taken, so hopefully Settelmaier makes it to 2(28). I think I actually might like him more anyway. I'm now at 2(28), and Settelmaier is the second-best OLB available. However, the team that picks at 28 needs an OLB. I'll see if I can trade up with them. I offered San Diego, whose pick was 2(28), the 3(10) and the 4(9), for the 2(28) and the 7(29). They accepted, and I actually got an extra pick that i didn't think I would get. I finalize the deal, and select OLB Hunter Settelmaier (22/71). I like that potential! |

2007 Off-Season: NFL Draft 5th Round
I sim to my pick in the 5th round, hoping that I can find someone worth picking. It's pretty tough. I don't really have anyone interviewed that's at the top of their position right now, so I might just have to take a chance on someone. With the 5(8) pick, I select DT Brian McKenzie (20/38), a 323 pound space-eater. He's not a good pass rusher, but is a solid run stopper. |

I'm still having trouble finding someone to draft this late. Still have no one interviewed around here, so I take a chance on a project player. With the 6(7) pick, I pick C Donnie Perroni (29/70), who has huge potential. I might see if he can move to guard, but maybe he'll simply backup our starting C. |

2007 Off-Season: NFL Draft 7th Round
I have two picks in the 7th round, and I already know who I want. Both are slight reaches, but I like taking underrated guys late, hoping that maybe they turn into something a little special. With the first pick, I take T Hugh Stargell (12/37). With my second 7th rounder, I select S Henry Becker (21/48), who should add some depth to my secondary. |

2007 Off-Season: Post-Draft
The draft is over, so let's see how my rookie players may fit in this coming 2007 season. 1. CB R.J. Lando (47/80): Lando will become an instant starter on the team. He'll join veteran Howie Joyaux (51/51) in the secondary, and will upgrade the defense significantly within the first few weeks of the season. 2. T J.C. Greene (18/60): He needs a bit of time before he reaches his potential, but with the starter, Ricky Downs (51/51) entering his 11th season, he will work hard to become the starter within the next two or three years. 3. OLB Hunter Settelmaier (22/71): Settelmaier has a TON of potential. I hope that he makes an impact this season, and then ready to start next season. Current starter Levon Zimmerman (48/48) will keep his spot for now, but may find Settelmaier creeping up behind him as the season goes on. 4. NT Brian McKenzie (20/38): McKenzie will most likely be a backup in the NFL, but will provide some much needed depth for us. We drafted him to be a run-stuffer, so he'll go in mostly in goal-line situations. 5. C Donnie Perroni (29/70): Another player with excellent potential, I haven't decided what I'm going to do with him yet. I just re-signed my current center and he'll probably be here for a while, so maybe I'll try to move him to guard and see how he does. If he reaches his potential, this willl be one hell of a 6th round pick. 6. T Hugh Stargell (12/37): Drafted for depth, Stargell might have a tough time making the team. I don't see him making it past training camp. 7. S Henry Becker (21/48): Becker and current backup Clyde Thomason (27/42) will battle it out for the backup safety spot in training camp and in the pre-season. Becker and Thomason both have excellent special teams abilities, but I would give Becker the nod if I had to choose right now. We'll see what happens in camp. In the end, I came out with at least one instant starter, two players who will probably end up starting by the end of the season, and one who has the potential to become a dominant offensive linemen a few years down the road. |

Trade Offer
The Buffalo Bills have offered me a trade. The offer me a 2008 4th round pick and TE Bryant Cornell (21/42) for my 2nd year starting QB, Shawn Mahoney. I decline, as I'm not ready to trade my starting QB for basically nothing in return. |

2007 Off-Season: Pre-Late F/A
With the late free agency period coming soon, I need to take a look at my team and determine what holes I still have to fill. I'm hoping that there are a few players worth taking, because I still have to upgrade or fill in holes in a few areas. Unfortunately, I'm running out of cap room. I have $7.42 million left, and I need to be able to sign my rookies, especially my 1(8) pick. Needs and Upgrades 3rd String QB: I have a young, starting QB, and a mentor who is a capable backup, but I still need to round out my QB depth chart with a 3rd stringer. I guess it's not that important who this ends up being, but I'd like to have someone that can hold his own back there. Elite WR: I doubt I will find one of these in late F/A. but it's always a possibility. Currently my best WR is Kent Briggs (46/46), so having an elite WR would open up the offense a ton. Kicker: My current K is Alonzo Harvey (65/65), but he's in his 15th season and had an awful year in 2006. Hopefully I can find a decent replacement in late F/A. Backup DE: I need a solid run-stopping specialist to round out the depth on my defensive line. Backup NT: Two will do, but if I can find another big body to provide depth in the middle of the line, I'd be happy. |

2007 Off-Season: Late F/A Stage I
Holdouts Veteran SLB Levon Zimmerman (48/48) has decided to hold out for a better offer. I just drafted OLB Hunter Settelmaier (22/71), so if he continues to hold out into the season, Settelmaier will become the starter. I don't plan on giving Zimmerman any more money unless something crazy happens. :knock on wood: Rookie Contract Offers I hate when my rookies hold out, so I'm hoping that all of them sign their deals quickly and are able to attend training camp. I offer 1(8) pick R.J. Lando (47/80) a 6-year deal worth $25.88 million with $12.48 million guaranteed. He accepts it and will be in training camp on time. I offer a 4-year deal worth $6.14 million with $2.48 million guaranteed to T J.C. Greene (18/60), the 2(7) pick in the draft. He accepts. OLB Hunter Settelmaier (22/71) gets an offer for $5.68 million with a $2.4 million signing bonus, and accepts. Donnie Perrono (29/70), a center out of Kansas State accepts a 3-year deal worth $1.67 million with a $120,000 signing bonus. NT Brian McKenzie (20/38) accepts a 3-year deal worth $1.73 million with a $180,000 signing bonus. I offer S Henry Becker (21/48) a $1.56 million deal with a $10,000 signing bonus. He accepts. 7th round pick Hugh Stargell (12/37) accepts a 3-year deal worth $1.56 million with a $10,000 signing bonus. Expired Contract Offers None. Free Agent Offers I'm severely strapped for cash right now. I only have $1.7 million left in cap room. I decide to cut Levon Zimmerman (48/48), the OLB who was holding out for a better contract. With rookie Settelmaier (22/71) on the team, Zimmerman would probably have been benched eventually anyway. I'll use the money to fill the remaining holes, which now includes backup SLB. After cutting him, I end up $3.53 million under the cap. I offer a 1-year deal to QB Wendell Clayton (12/30). He would be the 3rd string QB, and would only cost $520,000 against the cap. I then make a 1-year offer to DE Perry Baxter (39/39), a solid player who would have a big role off the bench. Last edited by JetsIn06 : 08-14-2007 at 03:45 PM. |

2007 Off-Season: Training Camp
60 players enter training camp for my team. No one holding out, all rookies are in, so I'm feeling good right now. I really feel like I upgraded my team a lot. I have a few defensive players losing or gaining weight to fit in more to the prototypical 3-4 weights, but I'm really hoping that some of my rookies have good camps. I'm spending a little more time on defense and some more time doing team functions this training camp, as well. So I had a lot of ratings drops, and one big ratings boom. Most of the dropping players are getting up there in age so I'm not surprised. Next I'll go through some position battles I need to look for during the pre-season. |

2007 Pre-Season: Position Battles
There are a few spots on the team that I simply have an over-abundance of players. I'm going to take a look at a few of those spots where there are two players that I can both see making the team. Wide Receiver The battle here is between two 2nd year players, Bernard Peeples (17/40) and Korey Porter (16/37). Peeples is slightly better as a receiver, and is a much better special teams player, so I give him the edge as of now. I'll give them both some playing time in the pre-season to determine who stays. Tackle This battle is a little different. Wade Gunn (36/43) is much more talented right now than rookie Hugh Stargell (15/37), but because the team is re-building, I want to keep the team as young as possible, making the most out of late round draft picks to conserve cap room. This will be an interesting decision. Safety Clyde Thomason (29/41) and rookie Henry Becker (22/41) will also try to outdo each other in the coming pre-season games. They are both pretty good when it comes to special teams, so I think this will come down to how the two players do during the pre-season games. |

It's the finale of the pre-season, my last look at anyone who's on the hot seat. I feel like I've had a decent pre-season, but we all know that it doesn't really mean anything. 2007 Pre-Season: Wrap Up, Final Cut Down, and Season Outlook
So we went 3-1 during pre-season, not too shabby. I really don't know how the team is going to do this year. I really feel like I upgraded a ton of spots and don't feel like I lost out on too much. Starting QB Shawn Mahoney (16/46) had an okay pre-season, completing 27 of 52 passes, and threw for 1 TD and 0 INT's. I'm really looking forward to see how he progresses. Starting RB Darren Lindsay (88/88) really worries me. He didn't run for over 3.0 YPC in any games besides the first one, where he only had 5 carries for 22 yards. The defense, as a whole, played really well, only allowing 39 points over the 4 games, and shutting out the offensive powerhouse Atlanta Falcons. Unfortuneately, I can't keep all 60 players on the roster. I have to cut down to 53, so here is everyone who didn't end up making the team: WR Bernard Peeples (18/40) RT Wade Gunn (36/43) Both of these players were in pretty tight position battles. I went through each game, taking a look at the stats. It was tough, but I think I made the right choices. The remaining cuts weren't as difficult. K Alonzo Harvey (53/53) TE Grady Connell (15/38) FB Travis Shaw (50/58) RB Devin Hambly (35/35) C Peter Manson (21/45) Now I'm set with my final 53-man roster! Here's a quick look at the opening day roster. Code:
Here is a look at my 2007 schedule. Code:
I actually got really lucky with my schedule. I play a bunch of teams that really aren't that great. I don't play any team that's ranked before the Top 10 team. I do play the 10th ranked team twice, and the 13th ranked team twice, so those will be some very tough games, but I couldn't really ask for a better schedule. Lastly, here is a look at the Week 1 NFL Power Rankings. Obviously, no one seems to like us. Code:
I am a little more optomistic than this, but we will definitely need some luck on our side if we want to reach the playoffs. Wish me luck! Last edited by JetsIn06 : 08-15-2007 at 10:43 PM. |

Transaction News
Just after I decided on my final 53, I realized that I don't have anyone that can return punts. I check free agency and find a safety, Joel Fisher (13/28) who is rated 69/88 in PR. The funny this is, a current S on my team, Clyde Thomason (30/41) was in a battle with rookie Henry Becker (25/43). I actually liked Becker more, but still had an extra spot, so I kept Thomason. But now, I have to cut Thomason to make room for my new punt returner. Sorry Clyde. I sign Fisher to a 1-year deal worth $630,000. |

Game Notes: We gave up SEVEN SACKS! What a weird game. As you see, it ended up being a tie, but if you look at the drive chart's you'll see that I should have easily won the game, and then should have easily lost the game in overtime. Luckily, a series of holding penalties put them out of field goal range. There were two really scary momemts, as early in the game starting QB Shawn Mahoney went down. I thought he was gonna be out for the year or something really bad, but he'll be full strength in 3 weeks. Then, our starting RB Darren Lindsay went down, but he'll also be full strength in about 3 weeks. Post-Game Injury Report: Burt Fisk, FS, is now 100%. Brian McKenzie, NT, is now 100%. Henry Becker, FS, is now 100%. Ricky Downs, LT - Knee Tendinitis, Probable, full strength in about 1 week. Bernard Atkins, SS - Sprained Ankle, Probable, full strength in about 1 week. Herb Wassick, WLB - Pulled Groin, Probable, full strength in about 1 week. Wendell Wood, RCB - Sprained Knee, Probable, full strength in about 1 week. Kris Demann, WILB - Sprained Thumb, Probable, full strength in about 1 week. Darren Lindsay, RB - Hyperextended Elbow, Doubtful, full strength in about 2 weeks. Chuck Hill, QB - Bruised Shoulder, Probable, full strength in about 2 weeks. Winston Clinton, RB - Hyperextended Knee, Out, full strength in about 3 weeks. Andy Whiting, LDE - Shoulder Tendinitis, Probable, full strength in about 3 weeks. Shawn Mahoney, QB - Hyperextended Elbow, Out, full strength in about 3 weeks.
