A land fit for Heroes – World War One Gold – AAR

Now that World War One Gold edition (formerly WW1 – La Grande Guerre) has been released and is not only stable, but vastly improved I will be doing another WW1 after action report with the game. I love reading about and researching the great war and this game is much deeper than Guns of August and is now the best out there IMO.

For those interested the game can be found at Matrix Games - World War One Gold

Now let the guns of August commence

This AAR will focus on the Western Front and I will be playing France, which also means I will play any other nation (England, Belgium, US) that may enter the war on the Western Front. The AI will handle Russia and any nations entering on the Western Front.

Keep in mind updates will be slow during Football season, but will be my diversion when I am "Footballed out"

August 1914 and Germany is massing along its borders threatening both Belgium and France. With conflict inevitable the first step is to pick war plans.

Prior to the start of any conflict Germany donates gold to Turkey, gaining a +1 diplomatic bonus. I respond as Britain by withholding the promised delivery of two Battleships to the Turks, incurring a +1 diplomatic malice, essentially giving the Central powers a +2 diplomacy bonus with Turkey.

War Plans
As France I select plan XIX – This plan will still utilize shock tactics, but is more open and I am not forced to attack Alsace-Lorraine. I have open access to Belgium if Germany attacks, but may also invade either Belgium or Switzerland if Germany does not attack Belgium. This bears substantial consequences with Britain, so I will not take advantage of this opportunity if it arises. I must attack with the I through IV armies, with the option of attacking with the V army.

This war plan gives the following bonuses
+29 to National will of France
+5 (+1) for events of France
+3 (+1) for events of Germany (Who also automatically detect the plan)

I also adopt the following options
Good Morale
+5 NW of France
+2 (+0) for events of France

Prepare Belgium for War
-1 to NW of France
-3 (0) for events of France

Russia Chooses the Grand Duke War Plan meaning an early offensive against Germany in the East and the option Calvary shock, giving them a starting National will of 37 and events drawn of 6 (2 can be kept)

Germany chooses the Schlieffen plan, meaning they will invade Belgium to attack France, deploying 7 armies to the Western front. Hindenburgh also gains a reaction bonus in the east, with the option to pull 2 armies to that front if needed against Russia. They also add the war mobilization option freeing up 4 additional armies for the east and 1 for the west. Based on these choices Germany has a starting national will of 34 and events drawn of 17 (2 kept)

Austria-Hungary selected the Prinz plan, which calls for no early offensive, but allows the placement of 5 armies close to either the Russia or Serbia borders. They also select the Eugen option which place General Eugen in charge of the AH 1st army. Starting national will is 28, events 4 drawn (1 kept)

August 1914 continued

Diplomacy Phase

Pre-turn events played
Prior to the phase Germany plays the event pioneers scout enemy territory, giving them a + 2 to large river crossings.

I am able to steal Western front plans allowing me to see all enemy movement for 2 turns on the Western front.

Diplomatic actions
I send a +2 Diplomat to Britain, we need them in the war ASAP and 2 +1 Diplomats to the USA to begin working on drawing them out of neutrality.

I send 0 Diplomats (basically decoys) to Italy and Belgium.

Results of diplomatic actions
Turkey opens the Dardanelles to the Central Powers and there are swayed 3 points in favor of the Central powers. Turkey joins the war on the side of the Central powers

Great Britain is swayed 4 points in favor of the Entente and elects to join the war on the side of the Entente. Great Britain also enacts a blockade on Germany, which could affect the political stance of the USA.

Belgium is swayed 1 point in favor of the Central powers, but joins the war on the side of the Entente as it becomes apparent that German invasion is imminent.

Romania is swayed 2 points in favor of the Entente.

Serbia is swayed 1 point in favor of the Entente

Bulgaria is swayed 2 points in favor of the Central powers
Italy is swayed 3 points in favor of the Central powers (We need to work on them as it will create problems if the join the CP this early)

Greece is swayed 2 points in favor of the Entente.

Persia grants access to both Entente and Central powers forces

The Netherlands grant minimal agricultural support to Germany

The USA grants access to the Panama Canal to all and low level munitions support to France and Russia.

A busy first month for the diplomats.

You have the option to use 3D animated, 3D retangular (what I use) and 2D square (the traditional tile counter)

You can get to that through the menu, then options screen, it should be available in the demo.

Germany plays the Naval code breaking event and gains +3 to Naval interceptions and +2 to Naval surprise

Austria Hungary adopts a new political choice boosting National Will

Great Britain – Gains 6 recruits points and 2 munitions points. Reinforcements arrive in Bruxelles, Artois, Anzac and the British Indies. Planes arrive in Mons.

Belgium – Gains 8 recruit points

Movement
I move troops to the Charleroi region as an attack is mandatory here to restore supply lines to the British I army under the command of general French, who is now isolated. Great Britain also ships another detachment of troops from Southhampton to bolsters defenses along the road to Paris

Naval Combat
Indian Ocean – British ships under the command of Admiral Milne encounter a German detachment, but the “battle” is scarcely more than a few harmless salvos and the skirmish ends in a stalemate.

Air Combat
Over Sambor – Russia and Austria Hungary continue to meet in the skies, with results ending in a stalemate, though AH has a unit damaged and 1 destroyed.

Victory: Belgian I Army (The plucky Belgians advance out of Antwerp, but will be forced to pull back due to supply issues)

Eastern / Balkan Front summary (Surprisingly active considering the heavy early snowfall)
Ostrau – Germany defeated Russia
Carven Kuk – Bulgaria defeated Serbia
Cariovia – Bulgaria defeated Romania
Gole – Turkey defeated Russia
Stryj – Austria Hungary defeated Russia (A very poor choice by Russia to attack here)
Kulm – Russia defeated Germany
Janow – Russia defeated Austria Hungary

November/December 1914 aftermath
Sea raids by the French around Danzig fail

France, Great Britain and Belgium all adopt the War doctrine of trench warfare. It is about to get ugly on the Western Front.

Great Britain takes control of the Eastern North Sea.

Our sole attack was necessary to relieve pressure on the British I Army, but Germany’s attacks in very poor conditions surprise me, and cost them dearly.

One welcome note is that three straight months of fighting at Metz has concluded, giving both sides a welcome respite.

Next up: The first interphase of the war (Research, Budgets, Political actions, etc)

Interphase - End of December 1914

Inter-phase – End of December 1914

France
Recruitments – I commission weapon upgrades for all infantry, 3 artillery units, 2 Infantry units and a minefield at the whopping cost of 121 economic points (Budget Forecast -67)

Munitions -I set production at 2 per turn at a cost of 3 economic points (Budget Forecast -70)

National Will – (This attempts can help or hurt National will depending on success) I offer a sincere peace treaty to Austria-Hungary, order 2 attempts to restore national order (This will also help the economy since we have strikes) and recognize Italian war goals. National will is currently 21.

Technology – No new research is available until 1915, so I lower investment to 5 (Budget forecast -68)

Great Britain
Recruitments – I commission 3 Infantry units, 1 Artillery unit, 1 Headquarters and a minefield at a cost of 45 economic points (Budget Forecast 12)

Munitions -I boost production to 3 per turn, total cost of 6 economic points (Budget Forecast 10)

National Will – I put in requests for a war loan, attempt to free Fortress Garrisons, make an attempt to restore national order and finally an attempt to improve wartime economy. I can gain up to 4 or lose up to 4 National will points. National will is currently 25.

Technology – No new research is available until 1915, still I raise my investment to 10 (Budget forecast 0 - Balanced)

Belgium
Has no money available as they are under partial occupation and can make no attempts to raise National will, which amazingly still stands at 40.

Inter-phase aftermath – End of December 1914

France – Changes to National will, +1 for Parliament mood, +1 for Italian war goals, -1 for strikes, -1 for rebellions, -1 for loss of home cities, -1 for combat losses. Current National will is 19.

Great Britain – Changes to National will, +1 Parliament mood, -1 for strikes, -1 for rebellions and a total of -8 for blockade failures and inter-phase choices. (Ouch) Current National will is 17.

Belgium - Changes to National will, +3 for production, -1 for parliament’s mood. Current National will is 40 (+2) which is great for an occupied country.

Note: I am only going into detail on the countries I control here. Summaries for other countries are below.

National will of other Entente countries after inter-phase.
Russia – 22
Romania – 37 (+1)
Serbia – 40 (+2)

Central Powers
Germany – 17
Austria-Hungary – 9
Turkey – 20 (+1)
Bulgaria – 40 (+2)

LOL, it does take some getting used to. Once you go through the tutorials and it becomes familiar it gets better. I also keep the manual open for quick reference to make sure I don't miss anything. Once you get a grasp of what needs to be done in each phase I promise it will get easier.

Events and Diplomacy - January / February 1915

Events Phase – January / February 1915

The Entente draws the Laurence of Arabia event, allowing mobilization of Arab troops

Germany plays the Mati Hari event, allowing them to see everything on the Western Front for two turns due to plans being stolen. They also steal the Russian coup de tat event, which could prove costly to our allies in the east.

Sieges in progress

Nice remains under siege in the west and the siege of Krakau continues on the eastern front.

Diplomacy Phase – January / February 1915

Pre-turn events
None

Diplomatic actions
Great Britain sends ambassadors China and Greece and requests an audience with leaders of the USA.

France sends diplomats to Japan and Luxemburg

Results of diplomatic actions
The United States raises munitions support to France and Russia to a medium level and is swayed 1 point in favor of the Entente.

Persia is swayed by 4 points in favor of the Central Powers and enters the war on the side of Germany. They also send reinforcements to Turkey, as well as economic aid. This will make things hairy for British forces in that region.

January / February 1915 aftermath
A lot more action than I would have imagined given the weather, it is actually the period of most activity to date.

France loses 2 National will points due to combat losses and 1 each for the loss of Montmedy, Arcis sur Aube and Briey, but also gains a NW point due to improved stability after a general strike fails. The French warfare doctrine moves to the Firepower doctrine.

Great Britain loses 2 National will points due to combat losses and 5 as a result of Naval disaster in the North Sea. Britain gains 3 NW points due to improvement in stability after a general strike fails. The Brits also move to the Firepower doctrine.

Belgium joins France and Great Britain in moving to the Firepower doctrine.

Turkey sees National will rise 1 after the conquest of Kars

Germany sees Nation Will rise by 5 after routing Britain in the North Sea and 3 after the conquests of Montmedy, Arcis sur Aube and Briey.
