School doesn't matter. One of the GWAL schools would be preferred.

Ok Rick, I'll get you penciled in, hopefully at one of the GWAL schools. Heights and East will be possible openings, maybe.

How about your ratings? There are ratings for offense, defense, recruiting, and scouting. Or you can just give me a level, anywhere between 0-15. Most of the GWAL coaches have levels between 8-11.

How many points is it for level 8?

Make me more defensive-minded with good scouting and recruiting. Something like:
Scouting-25%
Recruiting-25%
Defense-40%
Offense-10%

ok, will do. I can't think right off hand how many points level 8 is. Somewhere around 160 or 180 I believe. You want level 8? I can make it happen based off the info you gave me.

Yeah, level 8 is kool. Start off as the defensive minded whiz kid. Might help me win some games early on.

I am going to be reporting on December later tonight, and possibly January too, but I wanted to run some new ideas by everybody first:

I think I want to get more up close and personal with the GWAL. With the new patch comes a top 25 mid-major poll and a few other changes. I'm thinking about changing the formats to week by week, and having a few awards.

Game of the Week:
Player of the Week:
Other Key Games:

Maybe some other awards. I would still focus on all the FOFC players and do reports on them, and of course I would focus on the mid-major poll, the bubble watch. not only this, but if we have a close conference race, this would allow me to focus on it more than just once a month. What do you guys think? Anything you'd like to see as far as awards, reports, etc?

I'm toying with ideas right now, but whatever I decide would start with next season. I'm not worried about being burnt out on this, I think I might actually enjoy it more if I had more personal interaction with the GWAL teams. What do you guys think? I want to hear ideas.

I'm all for you drilling as deep as you feel like you can with the game, provided it doesn't feel like a chore. If we are reading along, then we are hoping that you stay interested for awhile yet

In terms of pacing, if the stuff is compelling then maybe more focus on February and/or March? I don't think there is a need to tighten the focus on non-conference play, for example.

Dec. 2017 Wrap-Up

There are 2 tournaments to talk about this month, so let's jump into it.

2017 Las Vegas Shootout

In the first round, Creighton beat (15) Cornell 92-56, and Wichita North beat (13) Colorado St. 77-56. The quarterfinals saw a shocking upset as Creighton got hammered by (10) Cal St. Northridge 91-69. The Redskins kept winning, as they rolled by (5) Wright St. 86-74. In the semifinals, Wichita North beat (1) Florida 66-64, then they helped out the rep of the GWAL by defeating (3) USC 82-73 for the Las Vegas Shootout Championship! Congrats to Chris Porter and the Redskins for repping the GWAL well.

2017 Rainbow Invitational

Wichita Heights opened the tournament by losing to (8) Arkansas St. 69-66, then they beat (5) Oakland 69-48 in the consolation semifinals. In the fifth place game, the Falcons lost to (7) Duquesne 61-53 for another horrible preseason tournament finish.

Here are the GWAL standings through Dec. of 2017

Code:
TEAM CW CL Pct W L Pct RPI Prestige -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- #6 Wichita North Redskins 2 0 1.000 13 1 .929 8 66 Wichita Northwest Grizzlies 1 0 1.000 8 4 .667 46 65 Valparaiso 1 1 .500 11 3 .786 25 67 Wichita East Blue Aces 1 1 .500 7 6 .538 211 54 Detroit 1 1 .500 7 7 .500 304 57 Wichita Southeast Buffaloes 1 1 .500 8 4 .667 17 71 Wichita Heights Falcons 1 1 .500 7 6 .538 229 66 Kapaun Mt. Carmel Crusaders 0 1 .000 10 3 .769 38 47 Bishop Carroll Eagles 0 2 .000 7 8 .467 60 59

No doubt Wichita North is the class of the league right now, but newcomer Valparaiso is doing a heck of a job. Also can't overlook Kapaun, even though the lost their first conference game, they did defeat undefeated and then #1 ranked Kansas in early December.

Wichita Northwest (Chris Prewitt) had nice wins against Creighton and Wichita State, but that loss to Kennesaw State (who has a prestige of 24), could haunt them come selection sunday.

Wichita Southeast (Rudy Arellano) has been up and down this season. Early season losses to Idaho St. and Hofstra could be damaging, but they do have nice wins against Wichita St. and power conference teams Oklahoma and Cincinnati.

Valparaiso (Shane Kormelink) has Syracuse as their best win, with no really bad losses. They did beat up on former conference foe Green Bay, and they have nothing to be ashamed of in losing their first GWAL conference game to the Redskins.

UNC Asheville (Charlie Shocker) -- 2-11, 1-3 Big South. They have 2 wins: Tennessee Tech and Wintrhop. It looks to be a long season for them.

Georgia State (Charlie Woods) -- 5-7, 0-2 CAA. They lost their first 2 CAA games to Hofstra and UNC Wilmington, 2 tough teams. They did have a nice win against Auburn in early December.

Wichita South (Kuji Chagulia) -- 5-10, 2-2 Horizon. The Titans are struggling in conference play a bit, as they did win a tough game against Green Bay, but got hammered by Butler, and also lost to Loyola-IL.

Creighton (Deacon Palmer) -- 10-4, 2-1 MVC. The Bluejays have opened up MVC play by hammering Evansville and Wichita State, and lost by 12 to Northern Iowa. Aside from that, they had their tournament in December, in which their run was cut short earlier than expected.

Hawaii (B.B. Gunn) -- 3-9, 0-0 WAC. Hawaii's only win in December was against Savannah St., then they lost 6 straight games to end the year 2018.

Here is the top 25 poll as we enter the year 2019.

Glad to see Wichita North doing so well. Definitely a changing of the guard to see Miami and Seton Hall both in the top 3.

Here are the standings through January 2018, and I gotta say, it's wide open at this point.

Code:
TEAM CW CL Pct W L Pct RPI Prestige -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kapaun Mt. Carmel Crusaders 6 2 .750 17 4 .810 15 47 Wichita Southeast Buffaloes 7 3 .700 14 7 .667 30 71 #22 Wichita North Redskins 6 3 .667 18 4 .818 29 66 Wichita Northwest Grizzlies 5 4 .556 12 8 .600 82 65 Detroit 5 5 .500 11 11 .500 118 57 Wichita Heights Falcons 5 5 .500 12 10 .545 116 66 Valparaiso 4 6 .400 14 8 .636 65 67 Wichita East Blue Aces 3 7 .300 9 13 .409 169 54 Bishop Carroll Eagles 2 8 .200 10 14 .417 102 59

Right now the only teams that are really eliminated from the conference race are East and Bishop Carroll.

This is another reason I am thinking about going week by week. When we have such a tight race like this where anything can happen, I feel that a monthly report just doesn't do it justice.

Wichita Northwest (Chris Prewitt) had a nice win against Kapaun, but also had a loss to Wichita Heights, who seems to be a little bit improved over last season.

Wichita Southeast (Rudy Arellano) had a good January, kicked off by a 22 point win over highly ranked Wichita North. They did have a 20 point loss to former conference foe Wichita West, a loss that could hurt them come tourney time.

Valparaiso (Shane Kormelink) had a tough January, as Mr. Kormelink just can't seem to figure out how to compete in GWAL conference play. Their best game in January was a 7 point win against Wichita North, one of the Redskins' 3 conference losses in the month.

UNC Asheville (Charlie Shocker -- 4-17, 3-8 Big South, last place. The Shocker started the month of January off in a good way, beating Liberty and VMI, but then lost their last 6 games by an average of 22 points.

Georgia State (Charlie Woods) -- 10-11, 5-6 CAA, T-6th. They've won their last 4 games, and had narrow losses to James Madison and George Mason. They have a favorable schedule in February, and could make a push to the top of the conference.

Wichita South (Kuji Chagulia) -- 7-16, 4-7 Horizon, T-7th. The Titans won 2 games in January, against Wright State and Cleveland State. The move to the Horizon doesn't seem to be paying dividends.

Creighton (Deacon Palmer) -- 15-7, 7-4 MVC, T-2nd. The Bluejays had terrible conference losses at Drake and Bradley, otherwise they would probably be in control of things in the MVC. Fortunately the MVC seems to be wide open, so anything can happen.

Hawaii (B.B. Gunn) -- 9-11, 6-2 WAC, T-1st. B.B. really has Hawaii playing good basketball in conference play, with nice wins against Saint Marys and Utah St. They did lose to Gonzaga and Boise State though, who are also at the top of the conference. It'll be an interesting February for Hawaii.

Here are the polls through January 2018.

Kapuan has to be feeling a little disrespected in that poll.

I know that the Northwest team was senior dominated last season. What is the makeup this year? Upper-classmen again or are there some younger players contributing? Just trying to get a sense for what the trends look like at the program over the next couple of seasons.

Kapaun was one of the bottom feeders of the league for a while, I think it will take a consistent run of good seasons before they get respect.

As for your squad over at Northwest, there are only 2 seniors on the team. One of them averages less than 2 minutes a game, the other is the second leading scorer on the team. That will be a blow. Of the 5 current starters, you have 1 sr, 1 jr, 2 so, 1 fr. Your leading scorer is a sophomore, averaging 19 points a game. Unfortunately, after the starters, it gets pretty weak. You've got a frosh, a sophomore, and a junior that look like they will contribute next year, aside from the 4 non-senior starters that you have. That is looking like 7 players that have a chance to contribute next year. As far as recruiting goes, you've signed a 4 star recruit.

I guess the easiest way to say it is that you should be 7, maybe 8 deep next year, of players that can contribute. Then you've got a couple more that could be roleplayers. The future looks bright for a postseason berth over the next couple years.

Will have more time to work on this, as I just got laid off my third shift job last night. Good news/bad news situation, I could use the extra time.

Does anybody have anymore comments on my potential changes to this for next season? I'm thinking I may go with Hoopsguy and just keep November and December the same, and go week by week once I get to January, when the conference season begins. Or.. I could just go week by week on all of it, maybe highlighting key non-conference games too. I am completely open to suggestions on what you might like to see. Thanks in advance.

Nice to see that the GWAL is finally getting some respect, as the Buffaloes are considered in. No big surprise as both North and Kapaun are locks at the moment.

Let's look at the final standings for the 2017-2018 season:

TEAM CW CL Pct W L Pct RPI Prestige
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
#12 Wichita North Redskins 13 3 .813 26 4 .867 16 66
Kapaun Mt. Carmel Crusaders 12 4 .750 23 6 .793 13 47
Wichita Southeast Buffaloes 9 7 .563 17 11 .607 39 71
Wichita Heights Falcons 9 7 .563 17 12 .586 74 66
Valparaiso 8 8 .500 19 10 .655 55 67
Wichita Northwest Grizzlies 7 9 .438 15 13 .536 94 65
Detroit 6 10 .375 12 16 .429 129 57
Wichita East Blue Aces 5 11 .313 11 17 .393 156 54
Bishop Carroll Eagles 3 13 .188 11 19 .367 119 59

It was really a 2 team race all season, and it came down to the next to last conference game, when Northwest beat Kapaun to give North the game edge. As both teams won their final conference game, that gives Wichita North the GWAL regular season title. The team I'm most happy about is Heights. Hopefully Ralph Snowden is turning it around.

Wichita Northwest (Chris Prewitt) had a nice non-conference win against Baylor, and defeated Kapaun in February, but other than that, not much good to say. They struggled and limped to a sub .500 finish in conference.

Wichita Southeast (Rudy Arellano) hung tough against both Kapaun and North, losing by just 6 to both of them, but finished conference play by losing to Wichita East and Valparaiso, which may mean they have to win the GWAL Tournament to get to the big dance.

UNC Asheville (Charlie Shocker) -- 6-23, 5-13 Big South, 9th. Well Asheville was able to accomplish their goal and not finish last place in conference, and even though they only won 2 games in February, they played some good ball. Of their 6 losses in February, 3 of them were by 5 points or less. Oh what could have been.

Georgia State (Charlie Woods) -- 12-17, 7-11 CAA, 9th. They started the month off great, with 2 close losses and 2 wins, then Towson beat them by 26, Northeastern beat them, and non-conference Lipscomb beat them. Woods' squad limped to the finish and will try to regroup for the CAA Tournament.

Wichita South (Kuji Chagulia) -- 9-21, 6-12 Horizon, 9th. The Titans had a 4 game losing streak to start the month of February, then beat Wichita West and had a nice win against Illinois-Chicago, but their first season in the Horizon wasn't the greatest. Fortunately, Kuji probably won't lose his job yet.

Creighton (Deacon Palmer) -- 12-4, 22-7 MVC, 1st. The Bluejays won the MVC by 2 games, and are currently on a 10 game winning streak. They even managed to score 100 once in the month. They are rolling!

Hawaii (B.B. Gunn) -- 11-17, 8-8 WAC, 5th. The best win for Hawaii in the month was a 4 point victory at Gonzaga, but they had a really bad loss against New Mexico State, along with a blowout loss to Saint Marys. It'll be interesting to see how they respond in the WAC Tourney.

2018 GWAL Quarterfinals

(8) Wichita East stunned (1) Wichita North 74-71.
(4) Wichita Heights got by (5) Valparaiso 70-69.
(2) Kapaun Mt. Carmel beat (7) Detroit 54-40
(3) Wichita Southeast beat (6) Wichita Northwest 77-76.

That has to be the closest set of Quarterfinal games ever, and what's amazing is that none of them went OT.

(8) Wichita East kept the cinderella bid going by beat (4) Wichita Heights 64-50.
(3) Wichita Southeast was all over (2) Kapaun 87-70.

For the first time ever to my knowledge, the GWAL Championship game will not feature either the #1 or #2 seed. Amazing.

2018 GWAL Championship

(3) Wichita Southeast beat (8) Wichita East 76-75 in OT to win the 2018 GWAL Postseason Championship. Congrats to Rudy Arellano.

As for my postseason predictions, we know that the Buffaloes are in. Wichita North and Kapaun have to be locks, which would give the GWAL 3 teams in the NCAA Tournament, definitely the best season ever as far as that goes.

As for secondary tournaments, Valparaiso should definitely be in the NIT, and Wichita Heights could sneak their way in. At the very least, the Falcons should make the CBI. Then we have Wichita Northwest and their 15-15 record, but a healthy 114 RPI. That may be good enough to get them into the CIT, but I doubt it. As much as I hate to say it, I think Chris Prewitt and the Grizzlies are done for the year. Wichita East will be sitting at home as well, despite their great run in the GWAL tournament, as their 14-18 record won't earn them a bid. Detroit and Bishop Carroll will also be sitting at home.

Big South Tournament

UNC Asheville did not qualify for the tournament, as it only has the top 8 teams. Their season is over.

CAA Tournament

Georgia State lost in the first round to (8) Northeastern, 71-51, most likely ending their season.

Horizon Tournament

Wichita South lost to (4) Butler 76-65 in the first round, ending their dismal season.

MVC Tournament

Creighton beat (9) Missouri State 101-88 in the quarterfinals, but lost to (5) Drake 83-72 in the semifinals. They should still be dancing.

WAC Tournament

Hawaii beat (4) Boise State 70-69 in the quarterfinals, then got a break as they got to play (8) New Mexico State in the semifinals and beat them 77-75 in OT. In the WAC championship, their run ended as they lost to (3) Saint Marys 63-49. It was a good run, but their season is over.

Other Teams and Coaches of Interest

Clemson (Shane Dreiling) finished with a 20-11 record, 10-6 in conference, good for 5th in the ACC. In the ACC Tournament, they lost to (12) Virginia Tech 70-68 in the First Round. Ouch!

Oklahoma (Marty Frankamp) finished with a 17-13 record, 8-8 in the Big Twelve, good for 6th in the conference. In the Big 12 Tournament, they got hammered by (11) Iowa St. 63-47 in the First Round.

Memphis (Mitch Linn) finished with a 25-5 record and 13-3 in C-USA, winning the regular season title. They also finish with a #13 ranking. In the conference tournament, they lost to (9) UAB 89-84 in the Quarterfinals. What an upset!

BYU (James Cole) finished with a 21-10 record and a 12-4 record in the MWC, good for second place. In the MWC tournament, they beat (7) San Diego State 76-70 in the quarterfinals, but lost to (3) New Mexico 64-55 in the semifinals.

Arizona (Bryan Chadwick) finished 27-7, but only 12-6 in the Pac Ten, good for 4th place. In the Pac 10 tournament, they beat (5) California 78-70 in the quarterfinals, then beat (1) Oregon 76-56 in the semifinals, then beat (3) UCLA 97-79 to win the Pac Ten Championship!

Arkansas (Ryan Hujing) finished 13-18 overall and just 4-12 in the SEC, good for 5th place in the SEC West and the 10th seed in the tournament. In the SEC tournament, they fought hard against (7) Kentucky but fell 66-61, ending their season.

GWAL

Kapaun Mt. Carmel is the 6th seed in the NCAA West Region. They will take on the winner of the play-in game for the 11th seed, between UTPA and Indiana.

Wichita North is the 3rd seed in the NCAA Midwest Region. They get 14th seed Texas-San Antonio in the first round.

In the shocker of the year, Valparaiso got the 11th seed in the NCAA South Region. They will take on 6th seed Texas A&M in the first round. I really expected Valpo to be an NIT team, this is a pleasant surprise.

Wichita Southeast is the 11th seed in the NCAA East Region. They get 6th seed Dayton in the first round.

Wichita Heights is the 4th seed in the CBI, they'll host 13th seed Weber St. in the first round.

As expected, Bishop Carroll, Wichita East, Wichita Northwest, and Detroit have seen their seasons end.

Non-GWAL

Arizona is the 2nd seed in the NCAA West Region, getting 15th seed Eastern Washington in the first round.

Creighton is the 7th seed in the NCAA West Region, getting 10th seed Saint Marys first round.

Clemson is the 8th seed in the NCAA East Region, gettin 9th seed Chattanooga first round.

Memphis is the 4th seed in the NCAA East Region, getting 13th seed New Mexico first round.

BYU is top seed in the NIT Midwest Region. They will host the winner of the game between 8th seed VCU and 9th seed Fresno State in the second round.

Oklahoma is the 4th seed in the NIT East region and will host 5th seed La Salle in the second round.

No postseason for Arkansas, Hawaii, UNC Asheville, Georgia State, or Wichita South.

Awesome to see the conference have two Top 25 teams and get four in the dance. Frustrating to see my team on the outside looking in, especially after a one point loss in conference tourney to team who won it all.

Hoping to see some good recruits and a better squad next year. Time to cheer for our rivals for a couple of virtual weeks.

The only national recognition for any of the GWAL or FOFC teams or players was Wichita North JR Rafa Carmona who was on the All-NCAA 2nd team. Here is a look at all the GWAL awards:

I know that it was a hard choice for the NCAA to decide on the GWAL coach of the year, with several worthy candidates. But Darren Schoenfeld from Kapaun got the nod.

Nobody from UNC Asheville got an award or an all league place.

Georgia State put Roderick Dixon on the All-CAA First Team.

No awards for anybody from Wichita South.

Creighton had several players recognized. Gavin Anderson was MVC Player of the Year. Joining him on the All-MVC First Team was Walter Overturf. On the All-MVC Second Team was Ira Macy. And on the All-MVC freshman team was Terrell Hague.

Hawaii put Marcel Segard on the All-WAC First Team, and had Daryl Brown and Demetrio Reyes on the All-WAC Freshman Team. A good sign for them, putting 2 on the all freshman team.

Here are the recruiting rankings for the 2017-2018 season in the GWAL.

Code:
# Team Conference Best Player Rtg 5* 4* 3* 2* 1* -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 48. Detroit GWAL C Nathan Matney *** 0 0 3 0 0 49. Valparaiso GWAL PG George Duckworth **** 0 1 1 0 0 61. Bishop Carroll GWAL SG Christoper Capps *** 0 0 4 0 0 95. Wichita East GWAL PG Jose Folks *** 0 0 2 0 1 98. Kapaun Mt. Carmel GWAL C James Beckner *** 0 0 2 1 1 112. Wichita Northwest GWAL PG Ron Hazard **** 0 1 0 0 0 310. Wichita North GWAL PF Nicky Schuh ** 0 0 0 1 1 342. Wichita Heights GWAL PF John Gober * 0 0 0 0 1 356. Wichita Southeast GWAL 0 0 0 0 0

Great to see the 2 newest members with the best recruiting classes. Another bad year for Wichita Heights and Wichita Southeast. No 5 star recruits this year for the GWAL, but 5 of 9 teams in the top 100 and Wichita Northwest coming in at 112 is a good sign for the future.. I hope.

Good news for UNC Asheville as they had the top recruiting class in the Big South. It was also 189th in the nation.

Georgia State had the 186th best class in the nation, and 6th best in the CAA.

Wichita South had a respectable ranking of 126th in the nation, but only 7th best in the Horizon. Look for their struggles to possibly continue.

Creighton had the top recruiting class in the MVC, and it wasn't even close. The Bluejays had the 47th best class in the nation. Next best in the MVC was Indiana St. at 111.

Hawaii had the 139th best class in the nation, and 5th best in the WAC.

Mount St. Marys has been promoted from the Northeast League to the Ivy League, while Princeton has been demoted to the Northeast League.

GWAL Coach Evaluations

Both Garry Prendergast (Detroit) and Shane Kormelink (Valparaiso) were given free passes this year due to being new coaches in the GWAL. Kormelink is in no danger of losing his job, Prendergast has some work to do.

Chris Porter (Wichita North) and Darren Schoenfeld (Kapaun Mt. Carmel) had spectacular years. Their jobs our very secure, but I know there is a great possibility one or even both could take a higher profile job this season.

Ralph Snowden (Wichita Heights) had his best year in the GWAL, including a CBI championship victory. I won't say his job his secure, as the Falcons need to keep improving, but it's safe for now.

Mike Brown (Wichita East) has bought himself one more year with the cinderella run to the GWAL Championship game, but he is still on the hotseat.

Chris Prewitt (Wichita Northwest) didn't have the kind of season I had hoped for, but he doesn't have to worry about his job. I expect good things from the Grizzlies this year.

James Davis (Bishop Carroll) has been here for 3 years and the Eagles have gotten worse each year. He's about as close to the hotseat that he can be without actually being on it

Rudy Arellano (Wichita Southeast) took a small step back in the GWAL, but did win the GWAL tournament. His job isn't in jeopardy, but he does need to keep improving.

Not too much going on in the coach movement department. Chris Porter was offered jobs by George Washington, LaSalle, and Rutgers, all jobs with prestiges lower than Wichita Norths. Thanks but no thanks.

Deacon Palmer had offers from Gonzaga, Utah State, and Portland. So Deacon, you have a decision to make. Utah St. and Portland I would pass on, but Gonzaga, they are usually a pretty big time program. Then again, you just wiped the floor with the rest of the MVC when it comes to recruiting classes. So this is where I stop, because we have our first decision of the offseason.

Do you want me to let you know about other offers that come your way? That was only the first round of recruiting, there are sure to be more. Or.. do you just want me to decline all offers that you might get?

Round 2 of the head coach offering saw some interesting offers. Rudy Arellano got offers from Oregon and Green Bay. Now Green Bay would be a lateral move, and I didn't really think that would be good. But I encouraged him to go to Oregon, which was 28-10 last year finishing as the national runner-up. It would be a great job for him, but Rudy is loyal to a fault, and insisted he was comfortable at Wichita Southeast.

Deacon Palmer got offers from Lafayette and Green Bay. Not good moves for him, so he will be staying at Creighton.

Chris Porter got offers from Oregon, Miami, and Green Bay. Chris declined Green Bay with a quickness, and said he couldn't decide between Oregon and Miami. Both are tough conferences, with former GWAL coaches coaching in them (Bryan Chadwick at Arizona, Shane Dreiling at Clemson.) The difference was that Oregon had a better recruiting class, their roster shapes up a little better for the future, and the demands weren't as high. Miami's AD wants to be in the Final Four next season, while Oregon's AD would just be happy with competing for the Pac Ten Title. So Chris Porter is the new head coach at Oregon. Congrats to him.

I moved quick to hire the next coach at Wichita North. Let's welcome Rick Jolley (rjolley) to the GWAL as he will be taking over the helm of the Redskins. Here is his card.

One thing that I forgot to mention is that James Cole resigned from BYU to take a position with Florida St. He is the new head coach for the Seminoles. A curious move in my opinion, because they have only had a winning record for the last 3 years, and have no real postseason success. I guess James wanted to be in a BCS conference and took the offer when it came. Good luck to him.

GWAL Coach Expectations

Rick Jolley (Wichita North) is new to the GWAL and he gets a free pass this year.

Safe Jobs

Shane Kormelink (Valparaiso) was the surprise coach last year, leading his team to an unexpected NCAA berth.

Darren Schoenfeld (Kapaun Mt. Carmel) has really brought them up from their death beds, with 2 straight postseason appearances.

Rudy Arellano (Wichita Southeast) has 5 straight postseason appearances, including 2 in a row in the NCAA's.

On the Fence

Chris Prewitt (Wichita Northwest) took a step back last year. A postseason appearance this season will help the cause.

Garry Prendergast (Detroit) had a miserable first season in the GWAL. A winning record is the very least they need to bring to the table this year.

Watching Closely (1 step from the Hotseat)

James Davis (Bishop Carroll) keeps getting worse every year. If his win total declines this year, he may be on the way out.

Ralph Snowden (Wichita Heights) did bring the GWAL their first postseason title last year, but they should be competing for an NCAA title every year. I expect them to keep raising the bar and make at least the NIT this season.

On the Hotseat

Mike Brown (Wichita East) has been a huge dissapointment. It's postseason or bust this year.

Other FOFC Coaches

Charlie Shocker (UNC Asheville) just needs to avoid last place again this season in conference. Right now the AD is satisfied.

Charlie Woods (Georgia State) is expected to finish with a .500 conference record and the AD is satisfied.

Kuji Chagulia (Wichita South) is being watched closely by the board. They still want him to improve and are expecting a postseason berth this year.

Deacon Palmer (Creighton) is expected to reach the Sweet Sixteen this season. Right now the board is satisfied.

Kuji Chagulia (Hawaii) needs to make the NCAA Tournament according to his AD. The AD is satisfied for now.
