SOM - 1927 replay, with a twist

Doesn't look like the interactive project will get off the ground, so I will be replaying the 1927 season using Strat-O-Matic Baseball for windows. I will be skippering the New York Yankees and seeing if I can better the season of one of the greatest teams of all time.

Now the twist, Strat-O-Matic also produced a 1927 Negro League replay season, so I will be taking 8 of those teams, which include such stars as Oscar Charleston, Satchel Paige, Turkey Stearns, Pop Lloyd, Nip Winters and Bullet Joe Rogan.

With the influx of new teams there will be two 6 team divisions on each league, with 2 Negro League teams added to each division.

I will post series reports on the Yankees with occasional look ins around the League. One more added twist, inter-league play is alive and well in 1927.

April 4th through April 6th – Yankees 0-0 @ Harrisburg Lincoln Giants 0-0

We open up against one of the new expansion teams in an inter-league game no less. Harrisburg is lead by CF Oscar Charleston (RL 1927 .331-27-91), P Clifford Carter (RL 1927 20-6, 3.69 era) and SS Rev Cannady (RL 1927 .340-3-63)

My primary lineup all year barring injury/major slump will be as follows, though Pat Collins will occasionally occupy the 2nd spot due to his high OBP.

April 4th – Waite Hoyt 0-0 vs. Clifford Carter
Clifford Carter had a complete game at Island Park as the Harrisburg Lincoln
Giants beat the New York Yankees by the count of 4 to 3.

The game started off with Harrisburg taking the lead in the first scoring 2
runners on 2 hits. The big moment was provided by Oscar Charleston who
brought a roar from the partisan Island Park fans when he blasted a two-run
home run. Harrisburg banged out 9 hits on the afternoon.

Carter(1-0) allowed 3 runs on the game. Waite Hoyt(0-1) was charged with the loss. He allowed 4 runs and 9 hits in 7 innings.

April 5th – Urban Shocker 0-0 vs. Connie Rector
Lou Gehrig knocked 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the New York Yankees defeated the Harrisburg Lincoln Giants 13 to 7 at Island Park.

Gehrig was unconscious all day. The Harrisburg fans hated to see him
approaching the batter's box as he just kept delivering base hits! He ripped
a base-knock in the 1st inning, cracked a two-run shot in the 5th inning and
clubbed a three-run home run in the 7th inning. Even though they scored in
5 different innings, Harrisburg was not able to pull off the win.

Urban Shocker(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 innings and allowing
5 runs. Connie Rector(0-1) suffered the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 11
hits and 4 walks in 4 and 1/3 innings.

'I've spent a lot of time in the cage and made some adjustments and they've
paid off,' Gehrig said. 'I just take the same approach up there. I don't
overanalyze it. I go up there, see the ball and try to put a good swing on
it.'

April 6th – Herb Pennock 0-0 vs. Dolly Cooper 0-0
Rev Cannady collected 2 extra-base hits and had 2 RBI as the Harrisburg
Lincoln Giants defeated the New York Yankees 7 to 6 at Island Park.

Dolly Cooper(1-0) had a fairly solid outing. He surrendered 7 hits and 3
walks in 7 innings. New York threatened in the 9th but their rally came up
short.

Cooper got help from Charles Craig who was credited with his 1st save. Herb
Pennock(0-1) was the loser. He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 7 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings.

John Beckwith was beaming after the game, 'Not only were we making good
contact, but a lot of balls we hit seemed to have 'eyes'! I just love winning
these tight ones! It was just our day - no doubt about it!'
*Note – We were down 7-0 going into the 8th and hung a 6 spot up, but couldn’t some all the way back, exciting game.

The Sox are horrific and went 51-103 in RL in 1927, this wil give us a chance to lick our wounds after the series loss to the hard hitting 9 from Harrisburg. Their best players are (RL 1927 stats) – OF Jack Tobin (.310-2-40), 2B Bill Regan (.274-2-66) and P Del Lundgren (14-21, 4.17) I expect nothing less than a sweep.

Joe Dugan had 2 base hits and Dutch Ruether completed the game without help
from the bullpen at Fenway Park where the New York Yankees beat the Boston
Red Sox 5 to 1.

Ruether(1-0) was solid in the win. He didn't give up much, just 5 hits and 2
walks in 9 innings. New York had a total of 13 hits for the game.

Tony Welzer(0-1) was the losing pitcher. He got hit hard, allowing 13 hits
and 4 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings.

April 8th – George Pipgras 0-0 vs. Hal Wiltse 1-0
George Pipgras went the distance as the New York Yankees defeated the Boston
Red Sox by a score of 10 to 4 at Fenway Park.

Boston was unable to claim the lead after New York went ahead in the 4th
inning plating an isolated run using 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Babe
Ruth clubbed a solo home run. After another out, Bob Meusel stepped up to
the plate and he drew a walk. Tony Lazzeri then lashed a single. Lazzeri
took second on the throw. New York rapped out 14 hits for the afternoon.

Pipgras(1-0) was the winner allowing 4 runs for the game. The losing pitcher
was Hal Wiltse(1-1). He got hammered, allowing 9 hits and 4 walks in 6
innings.

Right fielder Jack Tobin had 3 base hits and Jack Russell tossed a complete
game as the Boston Red Sox defeated the New York Yankees by the score of 5 to
4 at Fenway Park.

Russell(1-0) gave Boston a solid outing. He went 9 innings and surrended up
14 hits and no walks. New York had a chance in the 9th but they came up
short.

Waite Hoyt(0-2) was the loser. Miller Huggins was clearly disappointed after
the game. 'It was a manager's nightmare out there', he said, 'We should have
had this one.'

April 10th – Urban Shocker 1-0 vs. Slim Harriss 0-1
Tony Lazzeri had 4 hits as the New York Yankees outscored the Boston Red Sox 9
to 7.

Urban Shocker(2-0) delivered a fine performance for New York. He went 7
innings and surrended up 8 hits and 1 walk improving his ERA from 6.43 to
4.50. Boston tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th.

Slim Harriss(0-2) took the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 16 hits and
3 walks in 7 innings.

Yanks take 3 of 4, but again the sweep was the expectation. The Bombers are tearing the cover off the ball, but pitching has been sketchy. We are currently tied for 2nd in the AL east at 4-3 with the Baltimore Black Sox sitting in first place at 6-1. Earle Combs is tied with Harry Heilmann for the AL lead in hits with 14 (8th in batting at .400) while Lou Gehrig is tied with Ken Williams of the St Louis Browns for the lead in home runs with 3. Ruth only has 1 at this point.

Around the league the Negro League expansion teams are doing well with Kansas City and Birmingham holding first and second in the AL west and our first opponent Harrisburg sitting in second behind the Giants in the NL east at 5-2. The Detroit Stars are also in second in the NL West at 5-2, trailing just 6-1 St Louis.
