Can you play in "leagues" or tournaments online? Be cool if you could get a FOFC setup going.

BTW, no travellers' editions in the collection? I picked up a crappy Dutch travellers version, which has a 9x11 board, rather than the traditinal 10x10 and a 3D6 chance chart, rahtner than the cards, which I think together pretty much destroys a lot of the usual strategies. That goes without mentioning the spelling errors and wrongfully calculated property values.

No, not really any travelers' editions. An Italian and a German version are in small boxes (size of the board folded twice, the Italian components are smaller than the standard version), but that's about as close as I have.

I think getting a stranglehold on the ethnic colors (red, yellow, green) is guaranteed victory. Too often people get caught up worrying about park place/boardwalk, and the railroads. I'd be interested in some head to head monopoly.

the key in monopoly is buy all properties, railroads, utilties, etc that you land on. as long you have money.

never get into an auction bid for it if you can help it.

70th Anniversary Edition is one I need to pick up.

(come to think of it, I still need to get the 50th too, both in the blue box and the (rarer) white box).

My son and I have been playing against each other (along with two AI) on our iPhones. For 35 years, my strategy has always been Orange-centric and I showed him the power of that strategy by humiliating him and the other opponents three times. Now he has caught on (along with the RR cash cow) and I can't beat him much anymore.

I wonder what the monopoly tournaments are like. The scrabble tournaments are well-documented, it's basically a bunch of crazy savants that study the dictionary all day. But what's the monopoly version of that? Or is it just regular people playing monopoly? Apparently there is some kind of tournament circuit.

There have been a lot of strategy books written about the game, many analyzing computer simulations. But the books go way beyond that in talking about trading and the timing of trades as the keys to win. Trades doesn't have to focus on properties but inusrance, first right of refusal, future contingencies as well as barterings. I imagine tournament players, like Scrabble, go beyond how ordinary people (which tend to use 'cheating' and nonsence rules) plays.

My 6-year old son discovered my old Monopoly game at my mom's house. Now he has a new version of it, a Pokemon-themed version and a Spongebob-themed version. I've had my fill of Monopoly for a while as a result.

But going all the way back to Quik's original post, I agree with him - the house rules most folks use change the nature of the game and make it worse. More than a few times when I've played my son, I basically won the game because I landed on Free Parking and got a significant windfall of cash. Not because I had a better strategy while playing, but because of dumb luck.

And not doing an auction on properties that don't get purchased when someone lands on it but doesn't opt to buy it removes a really interesting dynamic to the game.

Also, playing against him reminds me that the game is really at its best when at least four players are involved. You can play with just two, but it's not nearly as interesting.

My daughters (turning 11 and 7 this month) and I have taken to playing Monopoly on the iPad fairly regularly. They are both grizzled veterans and join Dad in all my quirks -- unreasonable affection for oranges and railroads, general disdain for greens and utilities, and continuous efforts to "house rule" our competition with one AI opponent to be most reasonable.

The new $20 electronic version is actually playable. It takes all the slow shit out of the game such as buying houses, etc.

Automated auction for properties is pretty cool

How about this for an all-purpose house rule, designed to lessen the overwhelming luck factor of initial landing spots, but not to eliminate it altogether?

When a player lands on an unowned property, she gets "topper" rights to buy it at $10 more than the highest price offered by the remaining players through their own auction.

So, there's still real value in being the first to land on a good property, but it doesn't overwhelm the game (as really is the case without any rule like this). Actual auctions are fun, this game would mean you'd have a ton of them, and the unknown of whether the "topper" can be pushed off the buy seems... interesting.

Is there a good online platform to play Monopoly in a small group? Not caring about AI, just, a platform to play and keep track of everything and facilitate trades in a workable manner?
