Offensive Breakdown
2007 definitely looks exciting. Here's why:
Quarterbacks Let the Charles Raphael era begin. The redshirt freshman will be the starter in 2007. Raphael is an upgrade from what we've had at QB the last two years. Whether or not Raphael will be the starter in 2008 depends on how fast our recruit, Seth Weaver, progresses in his redshirt year. We didn't think he would have the amount of talent that he's shown this spring. He just might make Raphael a backup in 2008. Seniors Lamar Mardeusz and Vernon Parker will be our backups. Note that we moved Rodney Naquin to WR; he just wasn't cutting it this spring. Running Backs Continuing our look at the vast improvement of our offense, we look to the RBs. 2007 will be the first year of the Thunder and Lightning era at UAB. Juan "Lightning" Koehler (So) has great breakaway speed and is effective on the outside run, while Mercury "Thunder" Razo (So) can wear down opposing defenses with good power and good endurance. Koehler is already better than Bobby Forbes and Moe Stewart were at the height of their careers, and he hasn't played an official down yet. This future Hall of Famer will be the No. 1 RB, while Razo will be the No. 2. Luther Schneider (Jr) will be our main backup RB. Recruit Cole Kemp, who was a major find, it turns out, will redshirt 2007. He could possibly unseat Razo in the future. We are definitely stacked at the RB position. At FB, Percy Schulz (Jr) returns as starter for the 3rd straight year. Receivers Matt Lang (So) will be our starter again this year at WR, and hopefully he won't get injured again. Rodney Naquin's (Sr) transition to WR has been okay, and he is a capable backup. Ben Patton will be redshirted. He'll be the best WR we've had at UAB in a long time. Our best receiver may be our TE, Dean Snyder (So), who had a decent first year as a true freshman in 2006. Arnold Dunn, a true freshman, will be the backup. Offensive Line At center, Dale Peachey (So) returns as starter. Super recruit Donovan Henson will be redshirted. At guard, we'll start Brad Powell (Sr) once again, while we decided to redshirt sophomore Ty Carlisle to maximize his potential. He'll be replaced by Everett Lerner (So). Disappointing recruit Trevor Bullock will also redshirt. At tackle, Leland Harper (Sr) returns as a starter. Replacing C-USA second teamer Mark LaPorte will be promising freshman Colin Downs. Grant Pietraszak, who has even more talent than Downs, will redshirt. Downs and Pietraszak will allow for Koehler to get a lot of outside yardage in 2008. Kickers Korey Elliott (K, Sr) and Jamie Muterspaugh (P, Jr) will return as starters for the 3rd year.

Defensive Breakdown
Now for the defense...
Defensive Line At DE, michael Davila (So) will return as a starter, while sophomore Howie Harms will fill in for the departed Sean Lazetti. Broderick Ornelas will redshirt. At DT, Adam Sawyer (Sr) will be a starter again, while Bennie Nelson (Sr) lost his starting spot to promising freshman Rod Welch. Deron Desmond and Brady Salvatori will both redshirt. Linebackers Gerald McCrory (So) will be our ILB once again. At OLB, we have two blah starters: Luther Wheeler (Jr) and Kurt Roosenraad (Fr). Don't expect any awards here. OLBs Leon Schroeder and Al Stubbs will redshirt. Secondary At CB, Bart Roberson (Jr) returns to start for his 3rd year. The other slot will be filled by freshman Byron Costello. At safety, Brenden Springer (So) and Billy Rudy (Sr) return as starters. Heath Tavares will be redshirted.

2007 Preview - Blazer Radio Show
NOLAN: Welcome to the Blazer Radio Show. I'm Skip Nolan, along with Bobby Forbes... Today we preview the 2007 UAB Blazer football season. Year 4 is a make or break year for the coach, B.B. Gunn, but he certainly has the personnel to get the job done this year, eh, Bobby?
FORBES: Well, maybe part of the job, anyway. He's not going to go undefeated, but with these new players, he'll certainly improve from 2-9... NOLAN: UAB fans have never been as excited as they were this preseason, and for good reason. FORBES: Two good reasons, actually - Juan Koehler and Mercury Razo. They call them "Thunder and Lightning". NOLAN: That's right. Koehler is "Ligtning" with his speed and Mercury is "Thunder" - he can get you with power. The wishbone is going to be hard to stop this year. FORBES: It's amazing, too. Razo doesn't look that big, but tell that to the defenses that had to try to stop him in the spring game... NOLAN: Let's look at the 2007 schedule: Code:
NOLAN: Yeah, definitely. UAB should definitely start off 2-0 with Louisiana-Lafayette coming to Birmingham in Week 3. The North Texas game in Week 11 is winnable as well... they should go 3-0 out of the conference. FORBES: But then you have the C-USA slate. Their three toughest games are on the road, at TCU, Louisville and Memphis. NOLAN: Being a rivalry game, they play Memphis well all the time, but I'll say they lose all three of those. FORBES: Really? I think they'll beat Memphis. Koehler and Razo will be on their game by then. NOLAN: As for the other games, they should be able to win all of them, BUT... while the offense looks good, the defense has a lot of questions. The defense will lose a game out of those five for UAB. FORBES: Yeah, I agree. They'll lose the South Florida game... they never play the Bulls well. NOLAN: Yeah, but East Carolina can be dangerous too. By the way, it's good that they avoid Southern Miss. They've lost, what, 100-something to 0 combined in the last 3 years? Terrible. FORBES: Remember, we were on that 2004 squad. We had a bit to do with it. (laughs) NOLAN: Anyway, so you think they'll go 8-3 and 5-3 in C-USA? FORBES: Yeah. NOLAN: I'm at 7-4 and 4-4. I guess we disagree about the Memphis game, huh? FORBES: I'm telling you... Thunder and Lightning will shock Tiger fans. Watch out. NOLAN: Here's what the C-USA coaches think: Code:
NOLAN: Well, it's understandable. The defense has yet to prove itself. I think they could do better than Tulane or USF or Houston, though... Alright, let's look at the national Top 25: Code:
FORBES: Yeah, I think that's fair. But I'm surprised Louisville's not up there as well. They looked strong. NOLAN: But they lost some key starters. Still, they could easily be in the top 25 when all is said and done. Here's hoping UAB will be, too... Well, that's it for the preview show. The week 2 matchup at Fairbanks is just around the corner. See you next time.

Week 2 Preview
UAB (0-0) at Fairbanks (0-0)
Line: Fairbanks by 5 Weather: 28 degrees, sunny TV: none For the third straight year, UAB travels to Alaska to face Fairbanks. However, this time, it's going to be really cold... Alaska cold. The forecast calls for a sunny but very frigid day. Fairbanks is favored once again, but they were favored the last two years, and UAB won both matches. This should be the coming out party for backs Juan Koehler and Mercury Razo. Our prediction: UAB 35, Fairbanks 17.

Week 2 Recap
UAB 52, Fairbanks 21
FAIRBANKS, AK - UAB didn't get 300 yards rushing on Fairbanks this year, but they certainly didn't need that much to win the game. UAB RB Juan Koehler introduced himself to the few UAB fans in the audience with a nice 216-yard performance. He ran for 2 TDs and caught another. QB Charles Raphael, also making his first start, had a nice debut as well. In the 4th quarter, CB Bart Roberson electrified the audience - well, the UAB audience - with one of the longest interception returns for a TD ever in Division I-A: 98 yards. Code:
COACH'S NOTE: Man, Naquin's doing better as a WR than he was as a QB.

Louisiana-Lafayette (0-1) at UAB (1-0)
Line: UAB by 2 Weather: 66 degrees, rainy TV: none After braving the Alaska cold and gaining a big win at Fairbanks, UAB plays its first home game against a bad Ragin Cajun team that was thrashed by Northern Illinois last week. Can Koehler give an encore, this time for the home fans? We think so. Our prediction: UAB 45, La-Lafayette 10.

Week 3 Recap
Louisiana-Lafayette 21, UAB 16
BIRMINGHAM - Juan Koehler had a big day, but it wasn't enough as the Ragin Cajuns held on for the upset. Amazingly, the Ragin Cajun defense was able to put a lot of pressure on UAB QB Charles Raphael, forcing him to hurry his decisions. A crucial interception in the fourth quarter may have prevented UAB from getting the winning points it needed. Code:

Week 5 Preview
UAB (1-1) at Cincinnati (0-2)
Line: UAB by 7 Weather: 76 degrees, sunny TV: none After the shock loss to La-Lafayette two weeks ago, UAB travels to southwest Ohio to face Cincinnati. UAB is looking to prove itself against one of the weaker teams in C-USA. So far in the so-called "Thunder and Lightning" era, we've seen a lot of Lightning (RB Juan Koehler) but haven't heard much Thunder (Mercury Razo). Why is that? "You know, Juan is our No. 1 back," coach B.B. Gunn said. "Right now, he has the hot hand, so we're going to give him the rock as much as we can to take advantage of it. Mercury's not doing anything bad. We're sure that if Juan cools off, Mercury will step in there and do a good job." Our prediction for the game: UAB 24, Cincinnati 14.

Week 5 Recap
Cincinnati 45, UAB 17
CINCINNATI - Could this year's UAB team have been overhyped? UAB's running game piled up yardage, but the Blazer defense let them down as Cincinnati's run and shoot drilled UAB. Mercury Razo finally had his coming out party, rushing for both of UAB's touchdowns. Code:

Week 5 - Recruiting
We had our first two commitments: G Dominic Pirtle (KY, 65+) and DE Les Riffle (GA, 64-). They'll help us out in the future.
Week 6 Preview Army (0-3) at UAB (1-2) (-8) UAB seeks to halt their two-game losing streak against a team that has a losing streak of their own: 13 games. Army's bound to break the streak some time, but this is a chance for UAB to right the ship before getting into the meat of the C-USA schedule. Our prediction: UAB 21, Army 17.

That's a very good point. Unfortunately, he's the most mobile QB on our squad, and that's not saying much. I might have to reevaluate how I recruit QBs; we do need more guys that can run it and give us that triple option.

Week 6 Recap
Army 45, UAB 28
BIRMINGHAM - Three games in a row, UAB was favored to win. They've lost all three of those games. UAB led this one 21-14 at the half, but then the game got away from them. If you look at the stats, UAB did most things right. They won the total yardage battle. They had over 230 yards rushing and controlled the clock. They even had comparable passing yardage to Army, with 225 to Army's 299. However, UAB had 4 turnovers to Army's 2. In addition, UAB had 6 penalties (losing 35 yards) to Army's 1 (5 yards). "We gotta reduce the turnovers and penalties," said B.B. Gunn. "If we keep making mistakes, we're not going to win." UAB's safety Warren Caban had a 69 yard interception return in the first quarter. Koehler is a frigging beast, though, and I'd love to see him ported over to FOF when he graduates to see how he does in the NFL.

Recruiting Two more commitments, one of which is a biggie: RB Alvin Castillo 6-1, 208 College Park, GA (North Clayton) Rating: 85+ It's becoming too easy to land premier running backs. This is the fourth blue-chip RB in 3 years now. He's the number one RB IN THE NATION this year, and the #2 overall prospect NATIONALLY. And he's coming to UAB! His strong point is power running. With him and Razo on the team, I'm seriously thinking of running a Power-I formation from 2008. More evidence of this guy's potential? In 9 games in high school this year, he's had 1539 yards on 240 carries and 21 TDs.

The only secrets I'm using are the ones from you guys, here on FOFC. I've just been lucky, especially on the offensive side of the ball. I only recruit guys with good grades and at least a 1000 SAT, and most of those guys want academics and close distance. Now that UAB's academics are on the rise, we can meet those conditions. I do have to say that I go after any player in Alabama, and outside Alabama, any red- or black-coded player with a fit score of above 80 is fair game. (My only other restriction so far is recruiting within a 400 mile radius.) I know that knocks down my credibility a bit, but hey... it's my first dynasty, and UAB is a tough team to build up.

Week 7 Preview
UAB (1-3) at TCU (1-3)
UAB looks to halt its surprising 3-game skid this week at Fort Worth, Texas, as they face the Horned Frogs of Texas Christian University. Amazingly, TCU, ranked #22 nationally in the preseason, is near the bottom of the C-USA standings. Seems like the time is right for UAB to get their first win against the Horned Frogs since B.B. Gunn took over. However, it's not that simple. TCU's losses have come against Missouri (2-2), nationally-ranked East Carolina (4-0), and rival SMU (4-1). Meanwhile, UAB has lost to Louisiana-Lafayette (1-3), Cincinnati (2-2) and Army (1-3). Plus, this game is at Fort Worth and TCU is favored. It would be nice to get a win here, but we don't see it. Our prediction: TCU 34, UAB 20.

Week 7 Recap
UAB 33, TCU 22
FORT WORTH, TX - So what if TCU is down this year? UAB will definitely take this win. Juan Koehler continued his big freshman year with his fifth-straight 100-yard game, while Mercury Razo added 49 more rushing yards, as UAB won a game that, surprisingly enough, wasn't as close as the final score might indicate. UAB (2-3) scored all of its points in the first half, going into the locker room with a shocking 33-7 lead. TCU couldn't get its rushing attack going, and the Horned Frogs (1-4) had to rely on their passing game to try to mount a comeback in the 4th quarter. They were somewhat successful with that, getting 15 points in the final period. However, UAB's secondary forced TCU to attempt mostly short passes, running the clock down in the process. This was the first win over TCU for UAB since B.B. Gunn brought the wishbone to Birmingham. However, Gunn wasn't that happy afterwards. "It's a good win, but we gave them an interception in the 4th quarter that led to a TD," he said. "It could have been worse. We have to be careful." Code:

Nah, I'm not. I know, I know... what a wimp. But this was my first dynasty, and I wanted to make sure that I wasn't in over my head. Actually, it's funny that you bring it up, because ever since Alvin Castillo signed, I've been thinking about starting over and running a dynasty on All-Star. No way in hell would the number 1 RB in the nation sign with UAB in real life, not with the way things stand now. Four blue-chip backs in 3 years? Come on. Obviously the recruiting is way too easy for me now (even though the game planning gives me fits). In fact, I'm making my decision right now. I'm going to start a new dynasty on All-Star and see how that goes. I may crash and burn, but it's worth a try, right? I've had TCY too long to not try it.

Funny.. I always wonder if I should down grade a level since it would be nice to see fit scores without calling someone. To each his own, I've just always played every Gindin game on the hardest level - but I've had fun reading your dynasty!! |

Yeah, I'd be sad to see this UAB team fold, but I'll follow the next one too! =D

Sorry guys... I couldn't let this dynasty die. I wanna see what Thunder and Lightning can do before all is said and done.

Week 8 Preview
#18 East Carolina (5-0) at UAB (2-3)
Line: ECU by 18 Weather: 60 degrees, sunny TV: none As you all know, East Carolina has been on fire. They are 10th in the nation in points per game, and their run-and-shoot is among the top 15 in all national passing categories. Their one weakness is probably allowing too many points on defense as of late, but they keep winning. UAB is high off of their big win at TCU last week, but they have to keep their emotions in check, or they won't win this. Coach Gunn has decided to start mobile QB senior Vernon Parker over Raphael, who has been quite interception-prone. How will that turn out? Who knows, but it doesn't look good for UAB, no matter the QB. Our prediction: ECU 41, UAB 23.
