Google Wave

Pretty neat stuff...man, if we aren't careful, Google could easily become the new Microsoft...virtually impossible to live without.

hxxp://wave.google.com

Have a look at the video and fast forward to about the 5 minute mark to skip all the fluff. I did watch the whole thing and I think my favorite bit comes about the 1:12 mark...PHENOMINAL!!!!!

Ya I'm excited about Wave. I've signed up in hopes of getting to be one of the beta users, and I'm crossing my fingers.

This was announced way back in May, but the latest news is that Google has announced that 100,000 will be invited to use a public beta of the service at the end of Spetember.

Wave looks pretty cool, but I would imagine that you would need to have a list of contacts using wave for the service to truly catch on. Unless you can invite friends (like the early days of Gmail), I don't know how useful the early public beta test will be.

Google Wave: A Complete Guide

Quote:
Google Wave has a lot of innovative features, but here are just a few:

- Real-time: In most instances, you can see what someone else is typing, character-by-character.

- Embeddability: Waves can be embedded on any blog or website.

- Applications and Extensions: Just like a FacebookFacebookFacebook application or an iGoogle gadget, developers can build their own apps within waves. They can be anything from bots to complex real-time games.

- Wiki functionality: Anything written within a Google Wave can be edited by anyone else, because all conversations within the platform are shared. Thus, you can correct information, append information, or add your own commentary within a developing conversation.

- Open source: The Google Wave code will be open source, to foster innovation and adoption amongst developers.

- Playback: You can playback any part of the wave to see what was said.

- Natural language: Google Wave can autocorrect your spelling, even going as far as knowing the difference between similar words, like “been” and “bean.” It can also auto-translate on-the-fly.

- Drag-and-drop file sharing: No attachments; just drag your file and drop it inside Google Wave and everyone will have access.

While these are only a few of the many features of Google Wave, it’s easy to see why people are extremely excited.

Yeah, I saw this a while ago as well (was surprised it hadn't been posted already) and I wonder if this becomes the new Facebook just like Facebook took over where MySpace left off?

Personally, I'm not a Facebooker nor was I a MySpacer...just not my thing as socializing isn't my priority while I'm online...and I'm not sure how Wave would make my online experience any better right now? There certainly is more potential for it to be more functional for my online habits versus Facebook or MySpace, but I don't know if I'd be someone using Wave all that often.

Don't get me wrong though, it still looks pretty cool.

Hopefully Wave frees up some of your time so you can come back and take your rightful spot among FOWL ownership.

I don't think it's supposed to be a social networking kind of thing... can you share photo albums and stuff like that? That's my primary use of facebook... to keep up with some friends.

After watching the demo I could really see Facebook fading away because this is much more interactive, if you can imagine that.

I've always thought of Wave as more of a collaboration tool, not really a social network. I'm not really an out-of-the-box thinker though, so I could be wrong.

Ya, it sucks that Google uses the fact that my friends and I enjoyed The Hangover to make money so that they can drive crazy-cool innovation within the industry. What a drag.

They demo'd some of the embedding API and showed how you could create a post on your blog and then have the comments show up in Wave, real time. So, somebody says they like my post and ask a question about it...that shows up, as it's being typed on my blog, in my Wave client. I can then type a reply in my Wave client that will show up on the blog, real time, that can be viewed by the world...all real time. That kind of functionality is essentially the next step for Facebook...except, Google is going to take that step first.

But Facebook is so much more, and to be honest, I want to Wave with people on a much more restricted basis than those I Facebook with.

I believe Google's Facebook competitor is Orkut, which based on this video will have Wave embedded.

I think that wave is supposed to be a protocol, and it will be possible to create your own wave server. You don't need to give all your data to google if you don't want to.

I got an invite. My codes are going fast, so I don't know if have any spare ones. It's pretty useless right now -- I have no contacts, so I can't collaborate with anyone. Even the invites I did sent out haven't actually been dispersed to anyone yet. I have no idea if it's any good until I can actually do something.

Like many of the things on the internet these days, I'm surprised that there are so many people who can use these things at work.

I spend 85% of my time on a computer at work where we still are forced to use IE6 and most things are blocked. I just can't see how things like this are useful to me, no matter how cool they look.

I guess with the iPhone (and Blackberry's and to some extent, the Pre), people can Facebook and stuff at work (I don't have any of those...yet), but something like Wave looks like it requires a full browser, my work would never allow it.

From what I have heard, Wave requires HTML 5, which IE8 doesn't even support. Would need someone to confirm that though. So those of us stuck with IE6 at work, would have no chance in hell of seeing anything involving Wave.

Program chokes on trying to initialize and something goes red in the "tray" of my start bar.

I got a Wave invite today from a friend (actually, I suggested to her that she give it to somebody who could use it, but she still sent it my way). Have no earthly idea what I'd ever use it for.

Thanks to a friend, I have access to the developers sandbox (using his second account), but I guess if you not a developer there is not much to see there, especially as you can only communicate within the sandbox.

Still waiting for google to send my invite to the proper beta.

Random thoughts from the sandbox:

After playing around, it becomes more obvious than ever that wave will only come into it's own when you have lots of friends online.

Robots could be a little more user friendly. I obviously have not seen the beta version of the software, but it seems like it will be tricky for newcomers.

Deleting things seems like a bit of a chore, and I have not yet figured out how to get rid of extensions.

So I received an invite to Wave yesterday and, along with some friends, I'm wondering how people are using this. How does it improve on just using Google Documents for collaboration or GMail/GChat for conversation? I assume the extensions will play a big role in the future, but how are people using it now?

Just got access to this... as a collaboration tool, it looks very exciting. The main thing is how I'm going to get the proper contacts in there as well.
