We did this on FOFC like...two years ago?

With maps too, not this street view bullshit - which kinda makes it a "luck of the draw" whether you get any real clues.

I had one clue with french language, so that was easy. Then I had one with just a bridge with a truck on it...that was frigging useless.

Cool though. I seem to be checking in right around 9-10k. Lucky if I can get the country so far though on the ones that I've gotten. Had one where I could see .fi on a sign so i knew it was finland, but ended up on the wrong side of finland (how was i supposed to know).

Just played and got 11904

GeoGuessr - Let's explore the world!

seems pretty neat but pretty easy also. In most cases you can pan around enough to find something that gives some sort of hint in the way of language on a sign.

depends on what pictures you get. i seem to get empty roadways with no buildings on at least 40% of my pictures so far.

You can travel along the roads until you find a sign or other familiar looking landmark. I found a sign that read "Welcome to Andamooka"

No traveling on the roads or Googing anything...just from the screenshots presented: 10,101. I was only fundamentally off on one (guessed Germany and it turned out to be Idaho), the rest of 'em I had pegged quite closely.

14K on my first try because I had been to two of the places, one in BC and another in Brazil. Then 10-11K on my subsequent attempts with some half an earth errors.

Yeah - I just realized that - that would have helped my scores I'm sure. That seems like cheating though. I think you should have to do it just from panning around at the location you're at.

Feel like this is the way it should be done, and this was my type of score.

I cheated (googling/traveling) to get 28091. One thing I learned - there's lot of places in the world more beautiful than NJ.

It'd help if I could distinguish different types of asian characters.

Oregon looks like Mississippi.

Messed up a Russian one due to a deceptive sign I took a gamble on.

10084 without moving around.

With no traveling or googling, I got a 8k on my second trip, with the bulk of it coming from my recognizing the flag of Thailand.

Kinda takes the fun out of this when you get an empty stretch of roadway with literally nothing on it...no signs or anything.

some are damn frustrating, like getting dropped off on an empty road with very "normal" vegatation (some bushes, some grass, some small trees). So, argentina or russia ? Oh, it´s sweden ?

(to make up for it, the next one was next to the Stuttgart train station that i´ve been to a dozen times and another one where the city name was featured prominently on billboards)

18455 was my highest so far.

definitely a fun idea

I wish there was a way to share the pics of some of the tough/decrepit pictures you get dropped into. I just got dropped into a bunch of beat-up, abandoned-looking apartments in the middle of nowhere Ukraine.

Alternatively, I just randomly plunked a marker down in the UK because I saw them driving on the wrong side of the street in this pic, and ended up 77 km away.

I guessed Chipping Norton (apparently) and it was actually Highclere.

Highest score yet (without moving around):11,049.

New non-moving high score for me - 11,995. Should have been spot-on on the one in France, I saw a sign with the town's name, but didn't zoom in the map far enough to see it and got tired of scanning the shoreline of the whole damn country.

Talk about luck...14,879 points off of blind guesses.

The Florida Keys was pretty easy, but...some random farm field in the Ukraine? An intersection in the middle of Brazil? Some gardens in Japan? A two lane dirt road in the brush in Australia? Nailed 'em all by randomly clicking on the map.

It ain't getting any better than that, so I quit.

Note I only go off of that picture and I don't move the map forwards or backwards.

I just got 18k with no moving the map... was able to identify Sao Paolo, Brazil and Ketchikan, AL from signs, and then had the most lucky guess of some dirt road in Australia within 200km FTW

12,326 on first try. Only missed the first one by about 20 miles ... I guess it was somewhere in Miami. Had the right country on a Norway location, and lost a coin flip on an Australian/New Zealand spot. Thought I had another American one because the mailbox looked like the Omaha World-Herald ... instead in was western Pennsylvania.

Asia-focused

New high score. Picked out a canal and properly placed it within 88km by luck to garner a good 3333 points. That plus a bunch of Asian signs (although I still ended up a fair ways off in Japan) carried me to 12,555 without moving.

This is way more fun if you don't move around and just try to judge based on the plant life, street markings, building style, sun location, language of anything written, types of cars on the road, what side of the road the pic comes from, etc. So far my best is just under 11k, but I have done it about 30 times now.

Anyone get a lot of duplicate pictures?

46 meters off of a place in Dunedin in New Zealand. Got Dunedin Keysmiths for the city and then Castle Street/Anzac Square intersection to narrow it right down.

All went to pot after that of course (Poland/Montana - what's the difference)? But 46 meters!

TRUE STORY

I hadn't had much luck playing with this (especially since it kept crashing by iPad browser), but saw that post and thought "hey, maybe just getting one really good guess is the way to go."

So, I click on the link at the top.

It's a picture. Um, I recognize it. Not vaguely, but... it's the beach at Ocean City Maryland. Right in sight, not even one click, I see a restaurant where I have eaten at least ten times. I know exactly where this is. When I place my pin, I'm trying to get into the right quadrant of the exact intersection... I'm on this.

Your guess was 0.004 km from the correct location and gave 6479 points.
