TCY/FOF: Wyoming Cowboys Redux
So once again we're back in the mountain valley town of Laramie, Wyoming, ready to restore the Cowboys back to their former glory.
The nice thing about this game is that we won't have Corey Bramlet! Whoohoo! Looking at the roster, though, we may very well wish we had him. I present to you a position by position breakdown of the team: Quarterback Code:
So we've got a ton of youth here. Three sophomores (Gordon redshirted) and a freshman. Gordon's the best of the bunch as far as the future goes, but Hitchcock actually looks like the best all-around current QB. Just who will win the QB matchup is anyone's guess right now. Running Backs Code:
Matthews is head and shoulders the best of this really bad lot. His high endurance (78) means that he'll be a critical part of our offense, which right now I'm leaning towards as the I-formation. we've got four okay fullbacks, I guess. Smith has some real genuine potential to bust out in my opinion and may even transistion over to RB. I decide to shift him over and he turns out to stay at 19/29 with a good enough potential skill set that I slap the redshirt on him. Receivers Code:
We have way too many tight ends on the roster. That being said, we've got a couple good tight ends on the roster. Parrish is a relative beast and I'm hoping my offensive and defensive coordinators are smart enough to realize Rex needs the damn ball. The receivers are a terrible batch. Only Lee is much good according to the bars. Groza is okay, but he's only for a year. Line Code:
We have a relatively speaking fantastic offensive line. Even better, the top guys are all juniors! Oh happy day! That'll give us two years to hunt for the heirs to these big old hosses. Well, granted, one tackle spot will be awfully shaky and I give Anderson the redshirt even though his bars are 11/24, 10, 14, which makes me wonder how in the hell he can have a 42 future rating, but whatever. Do I have the horses to run my preferred 4-3? Why no! That means a 3-4 alignment in at least the first year unless the LBs are really SOC. I think I need new scouts. OLB talent we have. ILB talent, hell no. I move Forbes on over to ILB. We're running a 4-3 after all, it seems, as only Forbes will be decent, assuming he translates well enough. ...He can't be a MLB? Okay, let's try out some of these other OLB guys. Opening Game
AT North Carolina (-5) We take on the Tar Heels in our first game of the year, my first game as a head coach. Although Carolina's favoured by 5, it'll probably end up a 30 point blowout or something. Prediction: North Carolina 30 Wyoming 7 The Tar Heels jump out to an early 17-0 first quarter lead and it's looking like the massacre is on, but then Eric Holliday shows he's more than just our starting LCB by racing down the line for an 89 yard kickoff return touchdown! Holliday also compiled 4 tackles, an assist, and a 29 yard interception return. That brilliant return sparkplugged our offense and defense alike and we broke North Carolina in the second half behind Shane Matthews's 2 TD runs and pull off the upset. Matthews got Player of the Game honours after amassing 144 yards to go with those two scores and C Harry Diaz's 6 key run blocks had a lot to do with our success on the ground. Both Matthews and Diaz were nominated for Player of the Week, a very pleasant surprise. I'm a little disappointed that Holliday didn't get a nomination, as he was the focal point for our performance. Week 2 Recruiting Notes We're going after some pretty big fish, both in the local region and from far away. While I normally like going through week by week and listing all the recruits, it gets tedious and time-consuming, so I'm only going to list off the guys that visit us, along with the biggest names we're pursuing. Visiting C Ricardo McGregor Lingle-Fort Laramie HS Lingle, WY State Rank: #5 State Rank By Position: #1 Rating: 30+ GPA: 2.77 SAT: 859 Idolizes Wyoming Ricardo has gone to Laramie with his parents every Saturday home game the Pokes have had for as long as he can remember. He loves his home state and wants nothing more than to don the Brown and Gold. He's more of a pass blocker than a run blocker, so it's possible he could shift over to LG. One nice thing is that his school has an Athletic Prep of 44, so he may be ready to contribute when he comes aboard. DT Deion Buckner Riverton HS Riverton, WY State Rank: 3 State Rank By Position: 2 Rating: 37+ GPA: 3.74 SAT: 1399 Strength is rushing the passer so we may move him to DE if he signs with us. Not from the greatest football program (24), but a great college prep high school (89). He's not the greatest player on the planet, but I'm determined to pick up what quality talent I can from the home state as long as they don't have issues with academics or attitudes. Big Names For this scenario, I'm going to view anyone with a scouted rating of higher than 70 as a big name, with one exception. This year, we're going after six big names, who are as follows. RB Daniel Horner Palmer HS Colorado Springs, CO National Rank: 377 National Rank By Position: 27 State Rank: 6 State Rank By Position: 1 Rating: 90-- GPA: 2.97 SAT: 943 Values: Distance*/Academics Yeah he's much worse than my scout predicted and yeah his Athletic and Academic Prep scores kinda suck (30 and 42), but this kid excels in Breakway Running and has as his big weakness Punt Returning by the scout. If we can get Horner, it'll be a huge coup and he could possibly take the job from Matthews on Day One. Right now, Arkansas has contacted him and Oregon is our main competition, with a scholarship offer and visit invite on the table. S Jonathan Hines Vallivue HS Caldwell, ID National Rank: 196 National Rank By Position: 9 State Rank: 1 State Rank By Position: 1 Rating: 83 (Not Visited Yet) GPA: 3.14 SAT: 983 Values: Distance*/Academics A kid this fantastic and we're the only ones who have even contacted him. My hunch is that won't last, but if we could get him, man oh man. Athletic Prep of 86 has me salivating too. Sure his attitude is only Fair, but we can handle that. I'm not sure how he'd stack up against our already pretty strong starting safeties, but if nothing else we could redshirt him. QB Dwayne Lichtenberger Oakcrest HS Mays Landing, NJ National Rank: 21 National Rank By Position: 6 State Rank: 3 State Rank By Position: 1 Rating: 75- GPA: 3.85 SAT: 1502 Values: (Distance)*/Academics If he comes to Laramie, I'm nicknaming him Dark Cloud.  This boy would be the golden child of our program and start right away as a freshman. Excellent attitude and a 77/81 Athletic/Academic Prep for the school make him the one player I'm desparate to get. As of this moment, the Iowa Hawkeyes are our top and only competition for him, but I'm sure more will come.DT Mo Zorich Harry D. Jacobs HS Algonquin, IL National Rank: 639 Rank By Position: 39 State Rank: 25 State Rank By Position: 1 Rating: 74 (Not Visited) GPA: 2.62 SAT: 850 Values: (Distance)*/Academics A dude who can stop the run and plug up the hole in the middle with his 6'2 255 body. We're the only ones to pursue him thus far, which is understandable given that he's not the most scholarly guy and on top of it, he goes to a crappy school (15 Academic). He may struggle in the classroom, but when the man has 49 tackles in 6 games, you have to take the chance, especially when you're at weak as DT in the 4-3 as we are. C Ed Sherman Rancho HS North Las Vegas, NV National Rank: 144 National Rank By Position: 7 State Rank: 2 State Rank By Position: 1 Rating: 72+ GPA: 3.79 SAT: 1276 Values: Distance/Academics He's big, brilliant, and comes from one of the best high schools in the country (85/87). With USC coming calling though, Ed's not likely to come to Laramie. In fact, he visited Los Angeles the other day and raved about the school and the coaching staff. We'll be bridesmaids along with Arkansas and Texas A&M is my guess. DE Joel Harwell Torrington HS Torrington, WY National Rank: 221 National Rank By Position: 25 State Rank: 1 State Rank By Position: 1 Rating: 68 (Not Visited Yet) GPA: 3.42 SAT: 1264 Values: Team Prestige*/Academics It is imperative that we get this homegrown product. He's smart, has good attitude, comes from a decent school (60/70), and perhaps most important, is extremely consistent. At all costs, we can not allow this Wyomingite out of the state. Stanford and Virginia Tech have contacted him, but there's no offers or visit requests besides us... yet.

Wyoming (1-0) AT #13 Texas A&M (1-0) (-13) (TV 4)
We pulled off the upset against the Tar Heels and earned ourselves a televised game against the imposing Aggies. My hunch says we're going to get our tails beat down here and in a big, big way. Texas A&M is just too damn good. Prediction: Texas A&M 54 Wyoming 3 It's a flat out slaughter. Our offense is so anemic that we not only score 0 points, but we have 33 net yards in 39 plays. Wow. The news gets worse when I find out we have our first serious injury of the season. DE Randal Blackner, our starting RDE has to have knee surgery and will be out 7 weeks. Recruiting brings us some better news. Visiting DE Joel Harwell The #1 player in Wyoming is officially stopping in to visit Laramie. Big, big news, though storm clouds are on the horizon, what with the Washington Huskies joining the ranks of those who contacted him. Just as long as they only contact, we're fine with that. Big Names Quick Updates RB Daniel Horner It's still just Oregon and I with offers, although Michigan State has joined Arkansas in the contact ranks. S Jonathan Hines The Idaho product now has Kentucky and LSU rushing in with offers, which is giving me some real pause for concern. I just have to hope that the distance factor is important enough that he'll swing to us in the end. QB Dwayne Lichtenberger Dwayne's from the #1 ranked overall HS I just discovered, which is pretty cool. Iowa and I are still in the race for him, but Maryland has stepped in as well. I don't see it as being likely that he'll join the Terrapins though, as that's too close to home for his tastes. DT Mo Zorich We're still the only ones pursuing him thankfully. C Ed Sherman Already with offers from us, USC (his most likely destination), and Texas A&M, he gets golden ticket offers from Arkansas and Purdue as well. One of the hottest commodities in the country and he's likely headed to USC. Eaglesfan27, you can start grinning now at the thought of this boy on the line. WR Carlton Powell Bald Eagle Area HS Wingate, PA National: 896 National By Position: 89 State Rank: 38 State Rank By Position: 5 Rating: 70- GPA: 2.52 SAT: 777 Values: (Distance)*/Team Prestige A guy who's probably not as good as his numbers suggest, he comes from a mediocre school (25/35), but can really turn on the afterburners after he gets the catch. If he gets caught in coverage though, he's not nearly as likely to make the catch as some receivers. It's us, San Jose State, and Temple with offers on the table. Right now I'd consider the Spartans the biggest threat. Toledo and Northern Illinois have also contacted him, but that's all.

There's a bye week after the sand-kicking we got from Texas A&M, giving the other guy whose injured a week to heal up his minor knock. Sophomore DE Jesse Hill, who leads our team in sacks with 1.5, takes over at RDE for Blackner, making redshirt junior DE Adrian Horan the LDE passing down specialist.
Visits RB Daniel Horner One of our top recruits, he of the 90-- rating, names Wyoming as one of his visited schools. We're the very first college he's visiting and he's got a glut of contacts that I'm not going to list. In terms of offers, he's wooed by us, Oregon, and South Carolina. One thing to keep an eye on however, is that his home state school of Colorado has contacted him and if the Buffaloes swoop in, we may well lose him. WR Frankie Johnson Ben Lomond HS Ogden, UT State Ranking: 12 State Ranking By Position: 2 Rating: 38+ GPA: 2.71 SAT: 1045 We're the only school interested in him thus far. His biggest asset is catching the ball, his worst liability returning kicks. With his high school a 54/50, he may be able to contribute right away as a freshman, given our sorry receiving corps. T Floyd Lewis Gallup HS, Gallup NM State Rank: 11 State Ranking By Position: 1 Rating: 35+ GPA: 3.17 SAT: 1168 Values: Team Prestige*/Distance Wyoming is the lone non Sol-8 school to chase after Lewis right now, who comes from a fantastic 91/81 school which somehow isn't rated among the Top 100 High Schools in the country. Odd. Anyway, his deal is pass protection and it's very possible that he could start at RT as a true freshman, eventually becoming the heir to current LT Michael Taft. Big Names S Jonathan Hines Iowa State, Kentucky, LSU, and Wyoming have all offered him and it'll be a dogfight for his services. Note: I visited him finally and he's 83--, so he may not be all he's cracked up to be. QB Dwayne Lichtenberger Still holding steady with Iowa, Maryland, and us. Since he weights negative distance and academics equally, I have a hunch he'll end up a Hawkeye. DT Mo Zorich He came back 74-- after my visit to him, but Mo'll still be a huge upgrade in the middle. California and Marshall have contacted him, but no more than that. C Ed Sherman The list: Arkansas, Purdue, USC, Texas A&M, Washington, and us with offers, USC the lone visit thus far. WR Carlton Powell A lot of contacts, but the race is on between us, San Jose State, and Temple for his services. I think you can pretty much count the Owls out though, as I said. It comes down right now to if he'll be a Spartan or a Cowboy. DE Joel Harwell In spite of quite a few schools contacting him, they seem willing to concede him to us, for he's had no other offers beside the one we gave him. Apparently he really liked the visit he had here last week.

It's no problem at all to do single spacing and I agree it looks a lot better.
 But time to continue! #47 Mississippi (2-1) (-2) VS Wyoming (1-1) Well, now... things don't get any easier when we finally get back to high-altitude War Memorial Stadium. The good part is, Ole Miss is from the lowland delta areas and hopefully they won't be recovered from the sudden shift of altitude yet. We'll probably still lose out, as we have morale issues after that Texas A&M pasting. Prediction: Mississippi 30 Wyoming 17 The scoring open and closed with Brown and Gold field goals, but that's about the only good we could muster as the Rebels hammered us in between the bookends. The slaughterfest got so bad, the backups were brought in towards the tail end of the fourth quarter. On the bright side, Matthews returned to his first game form by rushing for 90 yards and 2 TDs and Eric Holliday played brilliantly, getting 8 tackles to go with his second interception of the year. We definitely need a new QB for next year, though. Our signal-callers are just awful. To that end, I've tabbed a couple of emergency guys to pick up in case Lichtenberger falls through. Our lone offensive star, RB Shane Matthews, sprains his ankle and is questionable for 3 weeks. He'll just have to play through the pain. If he doesn't play, we don't win. It's as simple as that. Visits None. Big Names RB Daniel Horner Bad news. Colorado offered him a scholarship offer as I feared and he's visiting them. Time to start looking for a second option at RB. Damn, damn, damn. Other offers include Arkansas, Oregon, South Carolina, and of course, Wyoming. S Jonathan Hines A slew of offers on the table for him. In alphabetical order: Iowa State, Kentucky, LSU, Virginia, Wyoming. I'd say us and the Cyclones of Iowa State are the top two choices at the moment. QB Dwyane Lichtenberger Georgia steps in with an offer, making them a possible contender along with Wyoming and Iowa. Maryland isn't really in it. One thing to keep an eye on: UCLA has contacted him and if the Bruins offer him, he'll probably go there. DT Mo Zorich After weeks of no love, Mo's suddenly turning into a hot commodity. Air Force, Iowa State, and us are the three schools enticing him with a free ride. I'm sorry to say that the Falcons probably have the inside track due to their superior academics, with the distance basically being equal. C Ed Sherman At 7 scholarship offers, he's the one we have the most competition for. Arkansas, Clemson, Purdue, USC, Texas A&M, Washington and Wyoming all want General Sherman there. But again, USC is the only school he's visited. We'll still keep trying, though. WR Carlton Powell Nothing's changed from the three of us, San Jose State and Temple pursuing him. I've got a hunch that we can land him. DE Joel Harwell Much like Mo Zorich, Joel is suddenly flooded with offers. In addition to we who've been courting him from the beginning, there's now Colorado, Indiana, and Washington to consider. We've abruptly gone from being the top choice to probably #3 behind Washington and fucking Colorado.  I'm starting to really hate the Buffaloes.

Lousiana-Monroe (0-3) VS Wyoming (1-2) (-18)
For the first time since I've been here, we're favoured to win and the truth is, we should be able to beat the Indians soundly. But of course, upsets have been known to happen in this crazy world of college football, as we proved in our first game against UNC. I think we'll still win, but by a close score. Prediction: Wyoming 24 Louisiana-Monroe 17 The Indians came, they saw, and they got crushed. Last game we bookended the scoring with a pair of field goals. This game we bookended the scoring with Shane Mathews TD runs as he busts his ass despite his injury. He finishes with 155 yards rushing and 2 TDs and a team-leading 3 catches for 28 yards. Yep, team-leading. Jovon Bouknight we have not. Our defense just tore apart ULM. We had our first pair of two sackers in redshirt freshman walkon DE Lincoln McIntosh and, shockingly enough starting free safety junior Mo Allard, who led the team in solo tackles with 7. Not to be outdone, the man, the legend, Eric Holliday, recorded 4 tackles, 3 assists, and an interception for a touchdown, third pick of the year and second defensive TD. I just wish he wasn't a senior. Strong safety Irving Dixon also returned an INT for a TD. If nothing else, we've a fantastic secondary. Wyoming 45 ULM 21 Code:

Mathews picks up his second Player of the Week nomination and Mo Allard gets his first PotW consideration, though neither one wins. There's some critical injuries in the blowout. Burt Eden, our starting RCB, is out for 7 weeks with a knee injury. Rex Parrish, our only real receiving threat, separated his shoulder and is gone for the year. Eden's injury isn't so bad, as sophomore CB Quinn Pruiett, who was being redshirted for some reason, is actually a lot better DB, so off comes the redshirt for Quinn and onto the field as the starting RCB. Senior TE J.T. Bondy replaces Parrish, but it's not going to be pretty at all for the rest of the year. E-mail messages inform me that a few recruits have made their decision. I just scan the titles and don't read the message as I prefer to look in the actual recruiting section. Just a minor quirk of mine. So here goes. I'll reveal the decisions at the end. Visits S Jonathan Hines Good news here, as we're the very first school he comes to visit. Given his emphasis on distance and the fact that we're the only college below 1000 miles who's shown interest, I've got a good feeling about our being able to snag him. Big Names CB Matthew Hodgins Chesapeake HS Chesapeake, OH National Rank: 426 National Rank By Position: 23 State Rank: 15 State Rank By Position: 2 Rating: 85 (Haven't visited yet) GPA: 3.57 SAT: 1366 Values: (Distance)/Academics Exceptional at punt returning, but allegedly weak in the kick returning game, he's also likely to be very raw on the field, but well-prepared academically (14/83). With Holliday graduating this year, he could immediately contributed in the punt return game. Despite the fact that he wants to go far away from home, his only offers right now are from Bowling Green, Miami (OH), and Toledo, all nearby universities. Enter us and I think we've got a good shot at a guy who's fallen through the cracks somewhat. QB Dwayne Lichtenberger The good news is that we're one of his final four. The bad news is that UCLA threw him a scholarship offer and as feared, he's loving on them and visiting Los Angeles. His final four consists of Georgia, Iowa, UCLA, and Wyoming. DT Mo Zorich Man oh man, we're just getting blindsided left and right here. Yet more offers come in for the man whose stock continues its rapid rise. Air Force, Arizona State, Iowa State, Southern Mississippi, Utah, West Virginia, and Wyoming. That's 7 offers, an amazing amount for a guy who hadn't attracted much attention in the beginning. Worse yet, the first place he's visiting is Utah. He's probably gone. C Ed Sherman General Sherman's up to 9 offers!  Arkansas, Clemson, Florida State, Purdue, USC, Texas A&M, Virginia, Washington, and Wyoming. Naturally since we have unluckiness coming at us left and right, we find out he's visiting Florida State, too.WR Carlton Powell Louisana Tech jumps in on the offer list, but they're probably not all that serious a contender relative to us and San Jose State. Temple keeps hoping he'll change his mind about the negative distance. DE Joel Harwell Colorado, Indiana, Washington, and Wyoming are still the four offers the top player in Wyoming's got. Washington really has the inside track I'd say, followed by Colorado and us. A tiny bit of good news in that we're still the only school he's visited. And so the critical conference clashes commence. The Aztecs, from one of the most beautiful cities in the US, are an 0-4 laughingstock, which gives us reason to hope that we can beat them. The oddsmen like our chances as well, putting us up by a full touchdown. While it's never for certain in conference games who will win, and while some of San Diego is mountainous, SD State is not University of San Diego, which is is high altitude. Game, set, and match Cowboys. Prediction: Wyoming 28 San Diego State 14 At the end of the first quarter, it was 7-7. From then on, it was all Cowboys all the time at War Memorial. The Aztecs got absolutely crushed. They were pounded so badly that Shane Mathews and his top backup ran for 97 and 95 yards a piece and the San Diego State QBs were intercepted 5 times, twice by my man Eric Holliday and twice by Holliday's safety conspirator, Irving Dixon. Big Names CB Matthew Hodgins He's 85--, but so what? He'll supplant Holliday some day. His final five: Bowling Green, Colorado , Miami (OH), Toledo, and Wyoming. We'll need a big game from our defense and a return to life from our running game to pull it off, though. RB Kim Bolin, he of the 51++ scouted rating and better academics, went to Georgia Tech. I didn't know this until I went looking for him in the Committed/Contacted section and didn't find him. Come to discover by looking at all Committed RB that he hied it to the Yellow Jackets. Too bad. That would've been a hell of a Thunder/Lightning combo. In the future, I'll read the emails. I also just discovered that reading emails is important to see who's clamoring for a scholarship among our walk-ons. With 11 scholarships to burn after our 16th recruit, we can afford to give some of them free rides. Two pretty bad MWC conference teams clash this week. Despite the line, it's really anybody's game, in my estimation. Not that anyone will pay attention, because everyone's eyes are focused on the following game: #45 Colorado State (5-3, 4-0) AT #17 Utah (7-1, 4-0) (-5) (TV3) That'll pretty much decide the conference, barring a major collapse by whomever the winner is. As for our show, eh, let's predict a Runnin' Rebels victory to try and turn this around. Prediction: UNLV 24 Wyoming 20 Damn. We start off okay with a tied 1st quarter, but then the Rebels whip on us and demolish our defense, which is looking even crappier than our offense lately. There are some minor bits of sunlight, however. Shane Mathews breaks the century mark with 105 yards rushing and 2 TDs and Randall Blackner destroys the Rebel o-line for 8 tackles, 2 assists, and a my tenure-record 3.5 sacks. Imagine if he hadn't been lost all those weeks, what kind of numbers he might have put up. Cool point: UNLV's QB is named Hunter Fox. How frigging awesome is that? No matter what happens, I *must* get him on my FOF team when I transfer his draft class into there. He's a senior, so that means he'll be part of the first or second class, depending on how FOF 2K4 works (It's been forever since I've played solo and transferred TCY classes into FOF).More Fox notes: Bernie Hunsinger (JR), is rated at 34/34, vastly superior to Mr. Fox (20/20), but for some reason he got suspended for the year and has no starts. There's no new injuries to report really, but we do get back CB Burt Eden (Sr) and could return a couple other former starters who are questionable, including TE Rex Parrish (Sr), but Parrish will be the only one I put back in the lineup because hey, he's a senior. Recruiting G Mack Messner Unchanged Jonathan Hines has yet to commit anywhere and is still stuck between Iowa State, Washington, and Wisconsin. Since our starters are juniors and the one backup is a redshirt sophomore, we're fine at the safety position. Probably pick up some walk-ons, but eh, no biggie. Oh, the Game of the Week? Colorado State 0 Utah 30 The Utes now sit alone atop the MWC and with a #15 ranking besides. Our rivals' loss has us gleeful.

We have no chance to win this and that's all I'm going to say about that. After the Utes take the victory, they'll have wrapped up the MWC title unless I miss my guess. Prediction: Utah 65 Wyoming 3 I get the points we score right, as we tack on a field goal in the final quarter of play. Once again, we're slaughtered, though I was 30 points off on the Utah score. Yep, we've been playing so badly that the freaking Lobos are favoured to beat us. No one's going to watch this game or pay any attention to it, though, becaue of the following National Game of the Week: BYU 5-5 (5-1) AT #14 Utah 9-1 (6-0) (-5) (TV 1) Huge game for both teams. If the Cougars win, they're bowl-eligible and probably go to the Desert Bowl. If Utah wins, they're the MWC champions and have a very slim outside chance of making it to a BCS bowl. We have to win. I can't go down to a winless in conference opponent. Prediction: Wyoming 13 New Mexico 10 ...And of course, Shane Mathews' 97 yard rushing day with TD, Eric Holliday's record 99 yard kickoff return TD, and Randal Blackner's explosive 10 tackles, 5 assists, and 3.5 sacks are ruined when Edgar Hitchock fumbles the ball in the closing seconds of the game and some jackass Lobo recovers and returns it 15 yards for the winning TD. Despite the terrible year on the field, off the field we land the absolute best recruiting class in years. To have that stellar a class is simply mind-boggling, especially given how poor we were. For FOF 2K4, I'll nominally be taking over the Tennessee Titans, but the CPU will be handling everything. Why the Titans? I like Nashville. The Miami Dolphins are my favourite team, but if I took them I'd be having a vested interest and wanting to equally commit to both halves.
And that's just not going to fly, as this dynasty is largely TCY focused. Ironically enough, the Dolphins win the AFC Championship in 2004 and lose by one stinking point to the Dallas Cowboys in the Super Bowl, 28-27. The Titans finish 7-9. ...I just imported the draft... and Eric Holliday is nowhere to be found. Well, that makes this not fun. QB Joseph Davidson of Florida State. who recently finished 4th in the Heisman voting, is universally regarded as the top QB prospect, so I'll see where he goes. He is indeed the first QB picked and he goes #18 overall to the Detroit Lions. After training camp, I scan all the rosters and free agents. Not a single blessed Cowboy rookie. Oh well, guess Holliday decided to pursue interests other than professional football. Davidson breaks out of the Lions camp as the #2 QB behind Trent Dilfer. There's every reason to expect he'll be the starter in a year or two. Since there's no cool FOF news, I'll zip ahead to the start of 2005 in TCY. I promptly discover that the following staff members have left or retired: Great Lakes Scout Midwest Scout Mid-Atlantic Scout Defensive Coordinator Ouch! Geoff Snyder, some LB, couldn't cut the grades so he got booted out of school. I'm pretty sure he didn't start, so whatever. New Staff Changes Syndicate Coordinator Travis Moreland 32 years old Academic Eligibility: Decent Syndicate: Terrible Donations: Pretty Good Our guy last year was literally Lousy at both Academics and Donations. This led to me getting slammed hardcore in Donations and finishing with a 22 overall rating largely because of it, despite my 95 recruiting mark. Defensive Coordinator Brett Otteson 38 years old Playcalling: Pretty Good Injury Avoid: Terrific Rehab: Terrible Congeniality: Lousy DL: Good LB: Good DB: Decent I think Coordinators can grow in this game, so my gut feeling says he'll develop into a fine DC. He's already pretty good all around except for his rehab and personality problems. Offensive Coordinator Jerry Meier 27 years old Playcalling: Excellent Injury Avoid: Good Rehab: Decent Congen: Decent QB: Decent RB: Good WR: Pretty Good OL: Pretty Good K: Lousy Eh, who cares about the kickers? This kid is a steal and I hope he'll be with us for a long, long, long time, though it probably won't be long until a bigger school comes calling. We won't have such horrible offensive results this year, I guarantee that. The scouts I'm not going to go into because I don't want to. There's some exciting stuff to report on with regards to the rosters, but because the Print function once again refuses to output the file, I'm going to have to hold off on that.

Recruiting Class Update Although TCY Today had our recruiting class ranked at #33, Rivals.com lists it at #45 overall. Utah's class, #19 according to TCY Today, ranks #28 by Rivals.com's lights. USC and Georgia are #1-#2 according to Rivals, #2-#3 in TCY's view. The biggest drop from TCY to Rivals is Ohio State. Ranked the #1 class according to TCY, Rivals calls them #28. Nice to see the difference of opinion. And now, a look at your 2005 Wyoming Cowboys' position-by-position breakdown: Code:
We've got ourselves a real position fight between Hitchcock, Gordon, and Lichtenberger, with Brown as an outside possibility. All have their strengths and weaknesses. After closer review of the QBs during the spring practices, Gordon will start with Hitchcock and and Brown serving as the #2 and #3 guys, so we can redshirt Dark Cloud Lichtenberger and Bennie Dotson. Mathews hangs on to his starting job at RB to open the year, but Horner is both his top backup and the 3rd down back. Shane better play well, because if he doesn't, Daniel will swiftly move in to the #1 role. FB doesn't matter much on this team, though I suppose I'll recruit one. Code:
We have our first undisputed true freshman starter in Flora, who'll make people forget about Rex Parrish in a hurry. Bensen will be the top backup. Code:
Those three freshmen we got improve the receiving corps in a big, big way. Four, if you're counting Flora. Lee returns as a starter and Upshaw upstages the much more celebrated Powell to win the other side. Jackson will be the third receiver and Powell redshirts to allow him time to grow into his potential. Code:

Deshell naturally starts again and Jonas just barely beats out Gillispie to retain his starter's spot. It's too bad these are all fifth year seniors. Tackle is going to be another top concern in recruiting, for once we lose Taft and Maumalanga to graduation, our situation turns dire. Lewis beats out Gustafson for the top backup spot. Code:

Pribbernow is the most disappointing guy on the team. He has a wealth of talent but he just doesn't translate that into actual ability, either in bars or in performance. 2nd Team All-MWC Randal Blackner naturally retains his starting spot, but Harwell beats out Pribbernow and Hill for the opposite side, although Pribbernow will substitute in on passing downs. I know in FOF if you change their positions, they can improve, but does that happen in TCY? Anybody ever changed positions and had bars improve? He'll not only replace last year's First Team All-American at LCB, but he has an INT rating of 100! and also assumes punt-returning duties. We jump right into the thick of things in Week 1 as part of a Home and Away two year series with the Wildcats. I like playing these guys because they're not too far from hometown of Racine, WI and they usually have their summer camp at UW-Parkside, that cesspool I went to school for a few years. I think there's a fair chance of beating these guys, but it'll be razor-close either way. Both teams are powered by their defenses so it should be a low-scoring affair. Prediction: Wyoming 10 Northwestern 7 One team got held below 10 points and sadly, it wasn't Northwestern. The Wildcats reminded us that they're a Big 10 team and we're not by kicking our asses and holding us to just two field goals. Not the start I'd imagined at all for this year. The only bright note for us was Shane Mathews picking up where he left off last season, rushing for 117 yards. Here's to hoping that this year he breaks the 1,000 yard mark. Two guys idolize Wyoming this season, but after seeing how bad the last idol guy turned out, I've resolved to only recruit idolizers who have a shot at contributing. Wyoming's best recruit this year is another DE, with the awesome name of Shawn Conquergood, but guess what? We don't offer his major. That sucks! So no Conquergood for us.  Visits RB Tyrell Gillis Colstrip HS Colstrip, MT State Rank: 3 State Rank By Position: 1 Rating: 51+ GPA: 2.74 SAT: 1171 Idolizes: Wyoming Tough runner who isn't the fastest, but has that grit that allows him to get extra yardage. He's concerned about Horner being a freshman on the roster, which I can understand. The truth is we're pretty stacked in bodies at RB, but I can't pass up the chance at a lover of Wyoming who can contribute. Big Names FB Herman Griffin Oakcrest HS Mays Landing, NJ National Ranking: 120 National Ranking By Position: 4 State Ranking: 5 State Ranking By Position: 1 Rating: 81+ GPA: 3.73 SAT: 1228 Values: Academics/Team Prestige Big-time power running fullback who isn't necessarily the one you'd want toting the ball on third down. Oakcrest is ranked the #2 high school this year, thus dropping a spot. This kid is smart and talented and our chances of landing him aren't too hot considering how crappy our business program is. He was happy about Dwayne "Dark Cloud" Lichtenberger, his old teammate, on the roster, though, and he's one of two Oakcrest players I'm pursuing. Georgia already has a scholarship offer and invite to him as well. G Bo Grady Dougherty HS Albany, GA National Ranking: 39 National Ranking By Position: 2 State Ranking: 2 State Ranking By Position: 1 Rating: 71 (Not Visited Yet) GPA: 2.83 SAT: 973 Values: (Distance)/Academics His major is Algebra, which is probably our strongest program right now, so he'd likely hurt that, but that's fine. I'm only concentrating on building up specific majors, specifically Differential Equations after how the last class turned out, just to see if I can indeed get the program built up. Specializes in pass protection and could start as a true freshman, especially since we're losing our ENTIRE line. Florida is the only other offer right now, but he's not likely to be a Gator. Too close to home.

Somehow we're only three point underdogs. The Eagles should be much more favoured, even without QB Bob Meggett, last year's Heisman Trophy runner-up, now in the NFL as the rookie starting QB for the Carolina Panthers. He beat out Gus Frerotte after being signed as an UDRFA to boot. Double Anyway, getting back to the college world, we should get hammered bad. Prediction: Boston College 35 Wyoming 3 The best part about this game was when Jimmie Lee ran the opening kickoff back 91 yards for the TD to put us up 7-0. From there, it was all downhill as BC handles us easily. Our passing game still sucks, but freshmen RB Daniel Horner, who rushed for 56 yards on 10 carries, and LOLB Duane Ferderer, who led the defense with 7 tackles, an assist, and a sack, showed sparks of promise for the future. What's that? We're favoured at home against a Big 12 team? That'd be correct, for the Jayhawks' lone strength is a deadly secondary and our passing game is, well, non-existant. I let the AI handle my gameplans, but our two-headed monster of sorts at RB should power us to our much needed first win on the year. Prediction: Wyoming 24 Kansas 10 ARGH!!!! That very secondary dooms us as they intercept Lamont Gordon for a TD return that proves the differencemaker in this game. Paradoxically enough, all three of our scores come off of passing TDs. Despite this sickening loss, there's good things to take away from the game. Daniel Horner rushes for 71 yards on only 6 carries, Frankie Jackson has 5 catches for 90 yards and 2 TDs, and Bucky Haugen rings up our first multi-sack performance of the year with 2.0. Starting WR Jimmie Lee (Sr) has Tonsilitis and will miss two weeks. This necessitates Frankie Jackson (Fr) moving into the flanker spot after his big game. In non-injury starting news, RB Daniel Horner (Fr), will replace Shane Mathews (Jr) as the starting tailback. Except for one game, Horner's consistently outrushed Mathews this year and I think he gives us the better chance to win. Big Names FB Herman Griffin Florida, Georgia, Nebraska, Wyoming is still the current tale of the tape. G Bo Grady Florida, Georgia Tech, and Wyoming are the three official contenders, but he's got a ton of schools contacting him, so I suspect that'll change soon.

Mizzou is primed to beat us as they're a lot better team than their record and we don't exactly have anything going for us on either side of the ball right now. Prediction: Missouri 27 Wyoming 10 Sigh. The Tigers kick our butts from one end of the field to the other. Once again, we have trouble getting a cohesive defense put together and our offense doesn't move until after halftime. By then, it's far too late. Particularly troubling to me is the lack of pass rush and pass defense we've been displaying. We aren't getting anywhere near the sacks and pickoffs we did last year. RB Daniel Horner breaks free for his first century mark college game, with 143 yards and a TD. Backup RB Shane Mathews contributes 2 TDs of his own. Our secondary compiles three interceptions from unlikely sources and we seize a critical conference-opening win. We also snap a 10 game losing streak dating back to last season. DT Bucky Haugen (Sr) displays his injury-prone nature in breaking a clavicle and going out for approximately 7 weeks, the second time in as many years he's sustained an injury. I've found it's extremely relaxing and fun and a great de-stressor for the heavy courseload I have this semester. It's taken me a while, but I've finally found the right balance between information and playing to make a TCY/FOF dynasty enjoyable and worth staying with for me.

That's awesome! I can't wait to see it. One of the things I'm most proud of with this dynasty is the information.. tables I guess you could call them, that I've made in Notepad, such as the Awards thing, All-American MWC recruits, Heisman voting, Top 25 recruiting classes, etc. I know it's something simple that anyone could do, but they really add to my own immersion in the dynasty.

He really liked having his old teammate DT Deion Buckner to talk to on his visit, but if Buckner is any indication, Reese'll probably redshirt. Despite our woeful record and in spite of the lambasting visited upon us by the Cougars last year, I can't help but hope that we might have a chance in this. Their defensive line is soft and that portends well for our relatively powerful backs and mighty opposite line. Of course, their offense is much more potent than ours and that might decide the day. Forgive the tiny flourishes creeping in; I've been doing reading for Shakespeare. Prediction: BYU 35 Wyoming 30 Well, I was right about one thing. It turned out a relatively high scoring game by MWC standards. Unfortunately for the Cowboys, we were on the short end of the stick. Despite two interceptions by our D, including an incredible 40 yard runback for a TD by much-maligned MLB Shannon McNeil, our running offense was stymied and we once more showed nothing in the way of a pass rush. In what's been a miserable recruiting season thus far, we finally break through with some good Visiting news. Visits FB Travis Asquith Bonneville HS Idaho Falls, ID National Rank: 98 National Rank By Position: 3 State Rank: 2 State Rank By Position: 1 Rating: 92 (Not Visited Yet) GPA: 2.86 SAT: 1230 Values: Distance/Academics We *just* got in under the wire after I dug him up last week. I say that because he's chosen his final five and we're one of them, along with Arizona, Florida, Georgia, and Illinois. Our program sucks compared to everyone else's, but the closest campus next to ours is 800 miles away. We've a chance perchance. A great third-down runner, his weak point is unfortunately run blocking. DE Ike Wynn He's repeatedly told us he's not going to consider us and what does he do? Makes us the fourth school he's visited along with Nebraska, Texas, and USC. It just goes to show what determination can do. There's still one more visit, obviously, but I've a good feeling that we even made the final cut. Our conference is still more or less divided between the Powers (Utah, CSU, BYU) and everyone else. LOLB Duane Ferderer (FR) got his first double-digit solo tackle game with 10 tackles and 2 assists and RDE Randal Blackner (SR) woke up out of his season-long slumber enough to record 9 tackles, 5 assists, and 1.5 sacks. If the MWC ever did this in real life, I'd fall over in shock. Oh, what a thriller played out between CSU and Utah! In the end, a blocked extra point is what decided it. My hunch says all three corners will go hard for the starting spots, which will be wide open. The first real good bit of news we've had this recruiting season.

We must win this game. Our entire season depends on it. There's a very good chance that we will, too. Their best asset is their safeties, led by last year's High School All-American Jon Fulton, who's started all 8 games this year and has amassed 2 interceptions with 69 tackles and 24 assists. DE Kyle Burch, their other High School All-American recruit, redshirts this year. Prediction: Wyoming 24 San Diego State 14 Well, wouldn't you just know it but that bastard HS All-American Jon Fulton kills our offense and wins the Player of the Game award with 11 tackles, an assist, and a 48 yard interception return. The Utes lead the conference with an 8-0 (5-0) record, the Cougars second at 5-3 (4-0), and our archrival Rams third, clocking in at 8-1 (4-1). They're liable to be the only three teams that are bowl-eligible, as the Falcons drop to 4-5 with the loss and now must win out to get bowl consideration. Enter Brady, a smart guy who will be in the mix from his freshman year most likely. I like this recruit. S Grant Parten Cathedral City HS Cathedral City, CA National Rank: 220 Rating: 77+ GPA: 3.67 SAT: 1407 Major: Jurisprudence (32/100 - 84th) High School: 38 Athletic/92 Academic Commits to: Wyoming! Excellent! Like a lot of the DBs I've recruited, his strength is in intercepting passes. He can more or less write his ticket to whatever safety position he wants to start in next year, though that's less a mesure of his probable current ability than the quagmire we've got back at safety to come. He goes a long way to getting us out of the swamp, though, and is a feather in the cap. Maybe this class can be saved after all.

The Boise State game...grr....not only did it almost snow in SEPTEMBER, but we lost in the 4th quarter after our QB decided to THROW A PICK. It's like Bramlet all over again. Only difference is, Doss isn't as good and we don't have Bouknight to catch passes. Ugh. I have little hope that this year won't be as bad as last year's heartbreak hotel. I think Joe Glenn is too nice and we need a meaner coach here with a bigger playbook. But that's just me.

Here's a break in the college action to look at the NFL QBs I've been tailing.
After 10 weeks: QB Bob Meggett has started all 9 games for the NFC South leading 7-2 Carolina Panthers. He's completed 60.5% of his passes for 1926 yards and a respectable 12 TDs to 10 INTs ratio. His QB rating of 80.7 is good for 17th in the NFL. There's little doubt this UDRFA pickup and former Heisman Trophy runner-up is the biggest surprise of the offseason and a strong contender for Offensive Rookie of the Year. QB Joseph Davidson, in contrast, has just one start and three game appearances for his 4-5 Detroit Lions. In limited duty, he's completed 58.2% of his passes for 459 yards and 2 TDs versus 3 INTs and a 70.4 QB rating. He has much more upside than Meggett, though, and the 4th place Heisman Trophy finalist projects to have a far better career than Bob in the end. Back to the college game. Wyoming (1-7, 1-3) AT Air Force (4-5, 2-3) (-16) The Falcons are hungry to win out and hopefully catch a bowl game. We're just starved for a win period. I don't realize until after I sim the game that we've bloody been running a 3-4 all these weeks. No wonder we've been losing. Prediction: Air Force 35 Wyoming 7 We're up 9-3 at halftime and I start to have hope that we're going to pull out the upset.. but then the Falcons shriek and rake us to death in the second half, leaving us a group of dead, disgusted Cowboys. West HS Tracy, CA National Rank: 944 Rating: 63- GPA: 2.60 SAT: 980 Major: Algebra (53/100 - 58th) High School: 29 Athletic/25 Academic Commits to: Wyoming We could conceivably have a mostly true freshman line next year. Ed Sherman will likely be the C and Floyd Lewis will start at one T spot after getting backup duties this year. Stephenson might well start at the other T position. DT Chester McGee Arroyo HS San Lorenzo, CA Rating: 38- GPA: 4.00 SAT: 1317 Major: Differential Equations (44/100 - 70th) High School: 74 Athletic/99 Academic Commits to: Wyoming I feel a lot better about this guy than a lot of our other recruits. True, he may not start, but he's smart as hell and pumps up the program we're trying to make one of the tops in the country. Chester also provides an entry point into a great high school that I plan to hit hard next year. ILB Morris Reese Riverton HS Riverton, WY Rating: 43+ GPA: 3.64 SAT: 1376 Major: Electrical Engineering (45/100 - 68th) High School: 24 Athletic/89 Academic Wyoming All-State Commits to: Wyoming Ironically enough, Riverton High in the home state town of Riverton is becoming a pipeline school. DT Deion Buckner came in last season and ILB Morris Reese follows his buddy there. Reese may or may not redshirt, but I'll be damned if I'm going to let the AI run a 3-4 on me again. DE Ike Wynn Pandora-Gilboa HS Pandora, OH National Rank: 4 Rating: 80++ GPA: 3.06 SAT: 1061 Major: Geology (27/100 - 91st) Ohio All-State Commits to: Nebraska We simply reached too far for Wynn, but that's fine. Never know unless you try and at least we were one of his five finalists.

Yeah, I'm in agreement with you. I really miss going to the games at War Memorial and heading to O'Dwyer's for the away games. It was a great stadium and bar to catch a football game. Is Seldon looking better as a back? It seemed to me he showed flashes of talent last fall. You may be right about the coaching situation, though to be fair, he did get us back to a bowl game and bowl game victory, so give him another season, I'd say. I'd love to catch some O'Dwyer's cod and chips right about now. There's nothing in La Crosse that compares to it and there's no current movie theatre just across the street and down the block like what I had there. Although there is a budget theatre, which is a lot easier on my shriveled wallet.

Seldon does look better than last year, but....I think they are really not using him the right way and our O-Line is SOOOOO young and inexperienced, that they're not reallly helping or Doss out. There were probably 10 times last game where the center had bad snaps to Doss and he is having to scramble a lot more than Bramlet did, so that can't help.
I think that all in all, our defense looks outstanding and it's a shame we can't put up more points for them.
