Damn. Well, last year we opened up well before floundering... Maybe this year we'll kick it in gear and snag a bowl game by the end. I know if we'd have made a bowl game last season, I would've found the money from somewhere to go.

Returning now to the 2005 TCY Cowboys after that IRL Pokes discussion

Last week's MWC Scores
New Mexico 23 BYU 20
Utah 35 UNLV 10

Big, big upset by the Lobos in knocking off the Cougars. CSU gleefully accepts the promotion into second place and BYU is now 5-4, needing to split the last two games to sniff a bowl game.

I turn off Scouts adjust Game Plan so we don't run into that 3-4 debacle again, even though I never set our game plans anyway.

Wyoming (1-8, 1-4) AT New Mexico (4-5, 2-3) (-10)

Well, well what do you know? We get the euphoric Lobos at home. They're eager to win out to make themselves bowl-eligible and we're as usual hurting for a win. I don't think we'll get one here. It's just been a bad season.

Prediction: New Mexico 30 Wyoming 14

Despite the 4-3, our defense implodes in the 4th quarter, ruining a textbook day by our offense and we fall by an aggravating margin of a single TD. Shane Matthews returns a kickoff 95 yards for a TD and Irving Dixon returns an interception 44 yards for the same result. Daniel Horner recovers from his mediocre play to bust out for 97 yards rushing and Frankie Jackon continues to be Lamont Gordon's favorite target as the third receiver, with 5 catches for 91 yards. So close to the century mark in a lot of cases, but just short. Kind of like the game.

Oh, LOLB Duane Ferderer recorded 10 tackles and 3 assists as well.

The Aztecs do us a big favor in taking down the Runnin Rebels, more or less assuring that we should be able to avoid finishing last in the conference this miserable season.

An interesting situation's set up now, where the Lobos and the Cougars are both 5-5, 3-3 and 4-2 respectively in conference. BYU gets the treat of Utah at home on TV4, whereas New Mexico takes on conference dog UNLV on the road. Yeah, I'm thinking this is Advantage: Lobos too.

DT Bucky Haugen (Sr) breaks his clavicle for the second time this season, his third injury in two years, so he's done. We also lose 3rd-string RB and backup FB Ike Smith (RS Fr) for approximately 6 weeks to a pulled quad.

C Les McQuarters (RS Jr) is in danger of failing Sports Management II, so he gets some more blocks. I don't know what it is with guys on our team barely passing Sports Management I deciding to take Sports Management II, but whatever.

Who cares if he's not a fantastic talent? He's a crown jewel for our rapidly building Differential Equations empire and he comes from the kind of high school I'd love to pipeline to. More importantly, he's a body that can fill in at safety.

#20 Colorado State (9-1) (-28) VS Wyoming (1-9)

Asswhite asskicking awaits.

Prediction: CSU 70 Wyoming 0

We surprisingly make a game of it, though not much of one. LOLB Duane Ferderer (Fr) has his most magnificient game of the year with 11 tackles, 5 assists, and half a sack. I think it's safe to say who's going to win the newly created Team Freshman of the Year award. QB Lamont Gordon (Sr) actually got a lot better as the season wore on and by the end even emerged as an okay QB. It's a shame that just when he's starting to click, he's graduating.

And so a long and ugly season comes to a close at last.

I'd normally go through my end of season spiel in this post but I'm ticked off because the File Output will NOT WORK!

I tried deleting the printer and installing a different one. No.
I tried checking Offline and then back Online. No.
I tried unchecking Keep Printed Documents and then rechecking KPD. No.

Nothing works.

I'm about ready to shoot the damn thing.

Me too, on both counts.

I'll wait to do the end of season post though until I stop feeling like a vampire's drained me.

Other MWC Games
Utah 7 BYU 41
Air Force 41 San Diego State 12
New Mexico 24 UNLV 12

BYU pulls off the biggest MWC upset in the relatively short history, shocking #7 Utah and sending the Utes down in the polls all the way to #12 and potentially shutting them out of a repeat BCS bid.

What this week's results create is a fascinating situation as the final conference standings show:

Code:

Yep, no less than five bowl-eligible teams. At least two will make it, probably three. Four or all five is a big stretch, though.

I think there's some encouraging signs for the future despite the gloom of this year. Duane Ferderer had a relative beast of a freshman season and Daniel Horner looked good once he started. Once we get a decent QB back there, our WR numbers will improve as well.

I'm excited about this guy. Somehow he got buried in the scrap heap and nobody was giving him any attention, so we snagged him. Any time you have a ++, you have to be thrilled. He might struggle academically, but with the other smart guys we're getting in, we can cover for that. Possibly starts as a true freshman.

The Broncos took him out from under our noses, requiring us to go digging around for another kicker. I'm not too torn up. He wasn't that great a find anyway.

Uhh, crap! I didn't know if you invited them to visit, they could commit without a scholarship offer and take a valuable slot on your recruiting class. There goes my replacement kicker I'd lined up. Note to self: Next season, if you're not going to offer a scholarship to a guy, don't invite him to visit. Oh well, at least he's a brain.

No High School All-Americans join MWC schools this year. I consider this a good thing, after the asskicking Jon Fulton gave us.

Same match, same result, as the Buckeyes embarrass our archrivals in upsetting them on national television. After the game, a lot of people talked about how the Rams don't deserve to be in the Top 25. I agree.

Rose Bowl
#6 Penn State 38 #9 Utah 21

The Utes put up a valiant effort, but just can't knock out the Nittany Lions to pull off a second straight upset and repeat as Rose Bowl champs. Still, just getting there for the second year in a row means a lot.

Fiesta Bowl National Championship Game
#2 Miami 30 #1 USC 47

Eaglesfan27's Trojans win their second straight national title, thanks in no small part to last year's Heisman Trophy winner, QB Melvin Galloway, who gets my vote for the second year in a row.

Galloway wins it handily for the second straight year and once again we have a Gator QB in the top 5, who are again all quarterbacks.

Ouch! I honestly don't consider our recruiting class that bad, but we'll see what Rivals.com has to say about it at the start of next year. The Utes again load up big and will probably be the MWC Lords from now until the end of the world. They really know how to perpetuate their success, unlike CSU, which appears to have been squandering their run significantly.

Our hope is in the future, as Ferderer and Harwell testify. Joel's making the National All-Freshman team surprised me, but I was happy to see it, as I was with Blackner's repeat appearance on the MWC 2nd Team. Now if we can just find some offense...

By the way, remember DE Shaun Conquergood from Green River, WY? The one with the awesome name who can't come to Laramie because we don't have his major?

He went to Utah.

We'll miss Randal Blackner next season, along with our entire starting offensive line and both of our starting safeties. There's a handful of Cowboys that might make the draft cutoff, but I'm not holding my breath by any means.

NFL Report:

Tennessee Titans finish 4-12 thanks to my autopilot program.

Super Bowl
Houston Texans 35 Green Bay Packers 25

QB Bob Meggett leads his Carolina Panthers to the NFC Championship, where they lose to the Packers. As expected, he wins Offensive Rookie of the Year. Not bad for an undrafted rookie free agent. Much to my surprise, I discover that this Boston College product is actually a dual threat.
Passing numbers 60.4% 3288 yards 18 TDs 18 INTs 77.1 Rating
Rushing numbers 60 rushes 402 yards 6.7 avg

QB Joseph Davidson won the starting job outright after Week 10 and started 8 games for the Detroit Lions, who finished 5-10-1. Unlike Meggett, he's a pure passer type and I still stay he'll be a better pro than Bob.
Passing numbers 57.5% 2129 yards 13 TDs 12 INTs 75.7 rating

As I expected, no Wyoming players made the draft cut, but there's always Melvin Galloway to keep tabs on, who's considered one of the top 5 players in the draft... and surprise, surprise, he's drafted with the #4 overall pick by the Tennessee Titans! Remind me to give my scout a big raise for picking this kid. That's just totally awesome.

It's even more awesome when Galloway goes from 22/79 at the draft to 35/82 after the exhibition season. . It figures that the one time I'm not controlling a team in FOF, I get a hefty boom from a critical area.

Joseph Davidson trades a couple future points for some actual points at is now 40/58 from 35/60. He's still the Lions' golden boy.

Bob Meggett goes from 38/44 to 41/48 and despite this nice little improvement, he loses his starting job to... Jay Fiedler. Bye bye NFC Championship, Panthers! The Dolphins, incidentially, now have Jon Kitna as their starter at QB. Good deal.

I'm furious when I read my pre-season email.

CB Quinn Pruitt (Sr), DE Lionel Pribbernow (Sr), and ILB Timothy Myers (Jr) all failed a class despite not being on Academic Notice at all during the year. That's two of my starters who are now out for the year because their asses got suspended. And they're both seniors, so this probably means they've played their last games as Cowboys. Stupid, stupid, unbelievably stupid!

In related academic news, 7 of 16 of my first recruiting class have a GPA of 3.0 or better, and an 8th frosh, walk-on S Keith Horn, posted a 3.94 GPA last year, earning him a scholarship. It's not perfect yet, but it's improving.

DE Lincoln McIntosh transfers to Marshall because he was getting no PT.

My offensive coordinator retires at the ripe old age of 28. ?! Maybe he had a nervous breakdown or something. Unfrigging believable. We also lose our NW scout, who went somewhere else.

Offensive Coordinator
Christian Anthony (55)
Play Calling: Decent
Injury Avoid: Terrible
Rehab: Decent
Congeniality: Poor
QB: Poor
RB: Excellent
WR: Decent
OL: Terrific
K: Good

Yeah, it was an awful year as far as needing a new OC.

Rivals.com ranks our recruiting class as #98. Utah's they list as #2! Notre Dame was #1 (#2 in TCY Today) and TCY Today's #1 Texas slots in at #4.

Without further ado, your 2006 Wyoming Cowboys!

Code:
Brown, Arnie 14 QB Sr* 25 36 Dotson, Bennie 13 QB So* 10 60 Gordon, Lamont 11 QB Sr 34 62 Hitchcock, Edgar 2 QB Sr 30 31 Lichtenberger, Dwayne 6 QB So* 24 64 Tarplin, Neal 8 QB Jr* 8 27 Phillips, Lee 7 QB* Fr 7 47

How disappointing. Neither Lichtenberger nor Dotson improved from their redshirt year. We're again going to have a new QB starting and this time it's going to be none other than RS Jr Arnie Brown, who beats out the starters from the last two years. Phillips will redshirt.

Code:
Bridges, Rod 29 RB Sr* 16 29 Gillis, Tyrell 40 RB Fr 28 48 Horner, Daniel 48 RB So 53 89 Mathews, Shane 30 RB Sr 20 24 Smith, Ike 39 RB Jr* 25 30 Wilson, Kyle 47 RB Sr* 10 11 Morrison, Brant 36 RB* Sr 16 16

Horner leaps 21 points from the start of his freshman year and only lose one future point. He's one of the top players on this entire team now. Naturally he starts. Gillis proves an extremely pleasant surprise and wins the top backup job over the senior Mathews. What a nice catch he was!

Code:
Asquith, Travis 32 FB Fr 46 87 Simmons, Renaldo 24 FB Sr 22 22 Walden, Henry 23 FB* Jr* 17 28

The prize of this year's freshman class is a true gem, with the following areas rated 100 in RED BARS!: Third Down Running, Third Down Catching, Avoid Fumbles, and Endurance. Yeah I know, RBs in FOF with high endurance blah blah. Not sure if that's true in TCY or not. All I know is Asquith is going to be the starting FB and the 3rd down RB. I'm getting excited about this year's team again.

Code:
Flora, Louie 80 TE So 54 57 Newman, Bryan 95 TE Sr* 19 42 Jenkins, Cornell 83 TE* Fr 12 12

Note to Louie: Stay healthy. Like Horner, he rocketed in current, getting a 31 point boost, but he also lost 12 points of Future. He's still the best TE we've had in ages. I'll need to recruit here, though, to get some better backups.

Code:
Jackson, Frankie 9 WR So 22 24 Lee, Jimmie 88 WR Sr 32 32 Powell, Carlton 86 WR So* 39 57 Upshaw, Ricky 85 WR So 43 48 Barlow, Ray 81 WR* Sr 13 13 Briggs, Rex 5 WR* Jr* 2 24 Whiting, Ellis 3 WR* Sr* 13 13 Youssef, Carlton 89 WR* Jr* 5 34

One redshirt who did take advantage of his free year is Powell, who bumped up 14 points despite shaving 13 off his future. Actually I'm not going to report the changes in future from here on out. Just talk about them in terms of their adjustments to Current. Anyway, Powell becomes the new flanker and Upshaw will stay at split end. Lee, who actually improved his game from last year, gets bumped to the third receiver and Gordon's favorite target from last season, Jackson, drops a slot as well.

Code:
Hitchcock, Kurt 51 C Fr 28 46 McGregor, Ricardo 59 C So* 0 0 McQuarters, Les 58 C Sr 29 40 Sherman, Ed 52 C So* 27 51

Sherman is a huge disappointment right now. Even if McQuarters wasn't suspended, Hitchcock still had the starting job won. I'll be looking for a C again in recruiting, as there's no guarantees Sherman will ever snap back to his old promise and McQuarters is a 5th year senior.

Code:
Messer, Mack 77 G So* 53 92 Steussie, Darren 68 G Fr 15 68 Swope, Bennie 66 G Fr 18 45 Owens, Omar 61 G* Fr 8 8

Messer busted his ass off!!! He went from 8 to 53 in his redshirt year!!! He's the best OL we've ever had! His mates aren't so good, though. Swope takes the RG spot from Steussie, though the two will battle back and forth for it. I may try and recruit another guard, I'm not sure.

Code:
Anderson, Herman 60 T Jr* 7 41 Gustafson, David 69 T Sr* 13 34 Lewis, Floyd 63 T So 20 22 Stephenson, Derek 75 T Fr 17 41 Ulrich, Arnold 67 T Sr* 11 18

What an ugly bunch. After a season to learn as a backup, Lewis, who improved remarkably, will take over one side, with Stephenson holding down the other. It's a young, young line, which doesn't bode well for this season in spite of our massive improvement in most skill players.

Code:
Bowers, Willie 18 P Sr 27 27 Cabbage, Zack 15 P Fr 22 62 Haugen, Kendrick 12 K Jr* 36 40 Wells, Antonio 10 K Jr 41 55

Bowers will punt and Wells returns as the kicker. Cabbage redshirts, though his promise is exciting.

Code:
Esposito, Claude 90 DE Fr 11 46 Harwell, Joel 71 DE So 54 77 Hill, Jessie 93 DE Sr 13 36 Pribbernow, Lionel 92 DE Sr 35 56 Strickland, Norman 96 DE* Jr* 11 11

If Pribbernow's dumb ass doesn't get suspended, this group is very good, especially with Harwell's 31 point Current boost. But alas, Lionel is a lameass and so we have to start Hill. Esposito sees some action spelling the low-endurance Hill on passing downs and is the top backup.

Code:
Buckner, Deion 97 DT So* 21 45 Godfrey, Jamie 72 DT Jr 21 21 Kennedy, Damon 73 DT Sr 28 39 McGee, Chester 70 DT Fr 17 47 Abney, Jackie 74 DT* Sr* 8 8

Buckner put in some good work during his redshirt year, but it's not enough to start, which will go to Kennedy and Godfrey. McGee redshirts.

Code:
Devlin, A.J. 54 ILB Fr 14 75 Reese, Morris 99 ILB Fr 12 38 Wortham, Arnold 41 ILB So 12 28 McNeil, Shannon 91 ILB* Jr 8 34 Myers, Timothy 98 ILB* Jr 8 27 Young, Reggie 55 ILB* Jr 7 34

Devlin's future has me salivating, though his bars don't show anything like that, so somebody's wrong somewhere. He'll redshirt while I figure it out. Reese, Buckner's Riverton teammate, wins the starting job, though I doubt he'll hold it beyond this year.

Code:
Brady, Timothy 56 OLB Fr 7 59 Ferderer, Duane 49 OLB So 45 46 Finch, Dominic 53 OLB Sr 24 34 Forbes, Edgar 44 OLB Sr* 19 26 Renfro, Earnest 50 OLB Sr 30 30

Ferderer's future surprisingly dropped 22 points from his first year despite his incredible season, but I'm not too worried. I'm thinking he'll manage to get that back up. He resumes his job at LOLB, and Forbes holds off his challengers to be the ROLB, though that's subject to change as things are real close between the three. Brady redshirts and I hope he'll be a viable partner for Ferderer eventually.

Code:
Conway, Max 26 CB Fr 18 91 Hodgins, Matthew 38 CB So 32 72 Oliver, Jumbo 46 CB Jr 19 25 Pruitt, Quinn 33 CB Sr 51 51 Hanson, Ed 34 CB* Jr 12 14

What a dynamite secondary (relatively of course) we'd have if Pruitt's stupidity hadn't gotten him suspended. Hodgins doesn't look much worse for the wear after the injury and appears great, actually. Conway gets the other corner over Oliver just because of his potential. If Pruitt didn't screw up, Conway'd be redshirted. Oh and we're introducing a new defensive wrinkle. No longer are our CBs going to be left and right. They'll be top versus top receiver. It'll work better that way.

Code:
Crawford, Jose 31 S Sr 16 30 Glenn, Tyrus 43 S Fr 13 47 Horn, Kent 37 S So 4 28 Parten, Grant 20 S Fr 18 85

Ouch. Raw players here, though Parten's promise piques. Parten, though his bars are all green save for his 90 INT red bar just about, will be the FS and Crawford gets the nod at SS.

Wyoming AT Michigan State (-12)

Once more we open the season in Week 1 playing a Big Ten team, but my efforts to land us a TV slot fail. Our TV revenue was 0 last season, as was Alumni Donations despite having a much improved Syndicate Coordinator, so maybe we need to win some more games, eh?

We'll get beat down, sigh.

Prediction: MSU 42 Wyoming 10

It's apparent after this game just how far away we are from being able to compete with the Big Ten. All we manage is a field goal in an asskicking. How bad was it? QB Arnie Brown (RS Jr) went 0 for 10 and is in danger of losing his job as the starter. Our biggest bright spot came on defense, where DE Joel Harwell (So) picked up right where he left off from last season and records 6 tackles and 2 sacks. What's significant about that is he had 2 sacks all of last season and after one game, he's already equalled.

Michigan State 66 Wyoming 3

Big Names

National Rank: 169
National Rank By Position: 29
State Rank: 1
Rating: 81+
GPA: 2.75
SAT: 903
Values: Distance*/Academics

The perfect match for Harwell, he's unfortunately also got an offer from Boise State, just 7 miles away, so it looks like we won't get him. I'll press on, though.

TE Graham Woodward Meeker HS Meeker, CO
National Rank: 123
National Rank By Position: 1
State Rank: 2
Rating: 71++
GPA: 4.00
SAT: 1484
Values: Distance/Academics

He's one of those perfect guys from the perfect high school. In fact, he's so good that he might be able to beat out Louie Flora for the starting job next year if he comes here. Marshall and Texas have offered as well, but I think we can beat them.

OLB Randy Flannery Arroyo HS San Lorenzo, CA
National Rank: 70
National Rank By Position: 5
State Rank: 11
State Rank By Position: 2
Rating: 71++
GPA: 3.80
SAT: 1294
Values: Academics*/Distance

DT Chester McGee's teammate, we're really hoping to land him despite our crappy program. McGee will help, as Randy was happy to see Chester there, and we've got Alabama and Oklahoma, his other offers, beat on distance.

How did Messer do blocking for you in game 1? He looks like a beast and may allow Gillis and Horner to break a few for a TD.

I was disappointed that Horner only had 2 TDs last year - you may want to think about giving him the ball more?

2/5 KRBO for 40%, which is quite good against a team like the Spartans.

As for Horner, two things went against him last season:
1) He didn't win the starting job until Week 4.
2) A lot of games he played, like the MSU game, we were so far behind we started passing to try and make up ground.

I may look at tweaking the run directions and playing time, though, to get him a bigger workload. Thanks for the suggestion.

Following CraigSca's advice, I went through and readjusted the playing time for most of my starters (which in many cases was criminally too low), and recalculated the directions our run plays are operating in. Way too many going through the center and off the left tackle, the latter our weakest link in the running game. So after the changes, Horner is now 9 (previously 4) with 28% of our runs behind Messer. Harwell, formerly 3 playing time is now 9, and Ferderer and Messer see their time bumped up as well.

All this in preparation for our next game.

Kansas (0-0) VS Wyoming (0-1) (-4)

It's always nerve-wracking when you make significant changes to your team's gameplan, but we really need a breakthrough win early in the season and I think the Jayhawks can provide it for us.

Prediction: Wyoming 24 Kansas 17

National Game of the Week
#12 Colorado State (1-0) AT #3 Penn State (1-0) (-8)

Our rival Rams get a big test against the Nittany Lions. Let's hope they fail.

Both teams combine for over 100 points. We narrowly edge them out in an overtime session that lasts forever. RB Daniel Horner (So) rushes 39 times for 249 yards and 4 TDs, all Wyoming Cowboy records. He also grabbed 4 catches for 70 yards and a TD. QB Arnie Brown (RS Jr) goes 20-28 for 269 yards, 4 TDs and 2 INTs, setting a Cowboy passing yardage record. On the defensive side of the ball, OLBs Duane Ferderer (So) and Edgar Forbes (RS Jr) both rack up 10 solo tackles and CB Max Conway (Fr) finishes with 8 tackles, 3 assists, and his first ever collegiate interception. S Grant Parten (Fr) also picks off his first college pass in a thrilling game. G Mack Messer (RS Fr) obliterates the KRB record, the Jayhawks defensive front, and memories of C Harry Diaz with 8 KRBs as the new gameplan is an incredible success.

National Offensive Player of the Week
RB Daniel Horner - Wyoming

My first National PotW!!! Hooray! CraigSca, I owe you big, man!

National Game of the Week
CSU 15 Penn State 52

What a fantastic week it's been! The good news rolls on, as there's no major new injuries to report.

Big Names

DE J.R. Colclough
He's already visiting Boise State, so I think we'd best write him off and concentrate on other players.

TE Graham Woodward
There's lots of offers for him now: Iowa, Marshall, Texas, and Wyoming, with a ton of other schools contacting him. That's what happens when you're the #1 TE in the country.

OLB Randy Flannery
Still Alabama, Oklahoma, and us pursuing him.

Wow, I certainly didn't expect THAT big of a game! I'm sure the overtimes helped pad the statistics, but man, 5 TDs scored by Daniel Horner!? Even Arnie Brown remembered how to throw a completion (which he forgot how to do against Mich State).

Great victory - perhaps you have an offense that can now take some pressure off the defense?!

Let's see if you can double your win output from last season in week 3 !

Thanks Yeah, Horner just lit into the Jayhawks. They'll be talking about this game in the entire state of Wyoming for years to come. While our pass offense is still nothing terrific, we've got inklings of a deadly running game now.

Week 3 doesn't look easy because.... you'll see next post.

Wyoming (1-1) AT #46 Northwestern (1-0) (-6)

The Wildcats actually don't suck in this universe. Thanks, TCY academic bias! We still stand an outside chance of beating them, but realistically we're not going to.

Prediction: Northwestern 35 Wyoming 24

Despite a valiant effort, we just don't have the horses right now to compete with a Big 10 team. They beat us soundly and hold off our furious fourth quarter rally. At least it wasn't a complete blowout like last year, so we're definitely improving. MLB Morris Reese (Fr) surprises with 11 tackles and 2 assists and CB Matthew Hodgins (Fr) posts his second straight strong showing, good for 10 tackles, 3 assists, and a forced fumble and recovery for 26 yards and a TD.

A great high school (82/65) and solid athlete with man-to-man skills, he's attracted the attention of Air Force, Georgia Tech, Iowa State, and us in terms of offers. The Yellow Jackets hold the inside edge.

DE J.R. Coclough
He's visiting Boise State. We're likely sunk.

TE Graham Woodward
Offers: California, Florida State, Iowa, Marshall, Miami, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming. Guess what the lone school he's visited so far is? That's right, the effing Utes.

OLB Randy Flannery
Attention shoots up out of nowhere. Alabama, Michigan, Oklahoma, USC, and Wyoming, with Michigan and USC his two visits thus far. This is looking like another ugly recruiting season.

Our fairly brutal schedule continues against the Eagles, who boast among other studs, a couple of other-wordly talents at LB. Yeah, another massacre's in the offing.

We score first, but that's all she wrote in the pounding I anticipated. Bright point: S Grant Parten (Fr) plays brilliantly with 9 tackles, 4 assists, and 2 interceptions.

Air Force, Florida, Georgia Tech, Iowa, Wyoming, with Florida his first visit. Ugly season again. That's what happens when you can't win to save your life.

DE J.R. Colclough
Boise State's his only other offer and his only visit, though Virginia Tech contacts him.

OLB Randy Flannery
Alabama, Fresno State, Michigan, Nebraska, Oklahoma, USC, Wyoming. Visits: Michigan, Nebraska, USC. Our battleship is probably sunk here too.

TE Graham Woodard
Here we have California, Florida State, Iowa, Marshall, Miami, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming. His second visit is the burnt orange of the Longhorns. That's fine. He can go to Texas as long as he stays the hell out of Utah.

Side note: My Differential Equation studs are posting decent GPAs, above 3.0 and such, so why did my DE rep go DOWN from 44/100 to 38/100?! I'm really having trouble building my DE powerhouse this way and it frustrates me.

That the Aztecs, with brilliant S Jon Fulton, are favored, I can understand. That they're favored by three+ TDs, I can't. They'll probably win the conference opener, but it'll be close.

Prediction: S.D. State 27 Wyoming 21

As it turns out, they were right to be so heavily favored and they not only match the spread, they beat it to the point of almost shutting us out. What an awful way to start the MWC season.

I don't care that he's --. I still really want this guy. Those bastards at Colorado State have offered along with us and Miami. I regret to say that the Rams hold the inside edge but hopefully he'll sway to us.

S Nicky Gibson
Offers: Air Force, Florida, Georgia Tech, Iowa State, Purdue, and Wyoming, the Gators his lone visit. We need to keep the pressure on him and land him.

DE J.R. Colclough
A barrel of contacts, only Boise State and Wyoming with offers.

TE Graham Woodard
California, Florida, Florida State, Iowa, Marshall, Miami, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming, with Utah and Texas the two visits.

A terrific CB with visits to Miami, Nebraska, and UCLA, with Marshall and us offering. He told us explicitly that he's going to the Bruins and probably won't go a Cowboy route, but we'll keep trying.

The Bruins also boast a teammate on their roster and that combined with their academic might and closeness was simply too much for us to hope for. Oh well.

Bye week.

I'm getting nervous at the lack of Visits here.

Big Names

S Nicky Gibson
Air Force, Boston College, Florida, Georgia Tech, Iowa State, Purdue, Utah, and Wyoming. I'm getting sick of these MWC schools cockblocking me when it comes to recruits. The Gators remain the lone visit.

DE Russell Spaulding
Offers include Colorado State, Georgia, Kansas State, Michigan, and Wyoming. This abrupt influx of attention leads him to visit the Wolverines and you can pretty much write his check to the Maize and Blue.

DE J.R. Colclough
Heh. My home state Badgers step up with an offer, but forget it. He's gone to Boise State.

TE Graham Woodard
Lesson #1 in how to kick me in the balls as a recruit: Visit Air Force and Utah along with California and Texas. I'm really, really getting pissed at my own conference. How the hell am I supposed to compete with them when they keep pulling this crap?

Decisions

CB Winston Sellers Taos HS Taos, NM
National Rank: 92
Rating: 71+
GPA: 2.79
SAT: 988
Major: Geology (36/100 - 80th)
New Mexico All-State
Commits to: Nebraska

...This recruiting season is going to go even worse than last year's. Not only are the top guys stiffarming me, but even the lower prospects and chuffing me off in favor of other schools, including my MWC opponents.

Thanks. I appreciate it. Though honestly, right now since our Prestige is now Green, I'll be happy if I can just manage to make mid-tier MWC status. We've got two years left to capitalize on my topflight first recruiting class and they need to start winning games.

Otherwise we'll be facing a lot of lean years and I'll probably end up getting fired. It's a wonder I haven't yet, to be honest.

Look for me to schedule cupcake Sol8 schools over the next few years to pad our win total. It was a big mistake scheduling the big schools for this season.

UNLV (1-3, 0-1) (-3) VS Wyoming (1-4, 0-1)

We must win this game. We absolutely without doubt and without question MUST WIN. If we don't, our season's sunk. In fact, I'm so paranoid, I don't dare make a prediction.

MWC Game of the Week
San Diego State (4-1, 1-0) AT #7 Utah (4-0, 1-0) (-3) (TV3)

The Aztecs are riding their two HS All-Americans from my own stellar recruiting class to challenge the Utes, who are without their lone Excellent-rated RB due to suspension.

At long last... at long last, we erupt on a conference foe, tearing them apart on both offense and defense! Our first conference win in a very long time and a convincing one at that. RB Daniel Horner (So) rushes 22 times for 170 yards and 2 TDs and QB Arnie Brown (RS Jr) sets all kinds of Cowboys passing records by going 30-46 for 346 yards with 4 TDs and 1 INT. DE Joel Harwell (So) sets a Cowboy single-game sacks record with 3.0 to go with his 7 tackles and 2 assists.

Note to self: Push up the number of run plays.

OLB Edgar Forbes is ready to come back to the lineup now, which he does in short order.

Visits

DE Russell Spaulding
His final five are in and they are: Alabama, Colorado State, Georgia, Michigan, and Wyoming. The Wolverines are the odds-on favorites to get him.

S Nick Gibson
He also has his five visits picked; Boston College, Florida, Florida State, North Carolina State, and Wyoming. It's close between the Gators and the Eagles, but we'll give Florida the edge.

DE J.R. Colclough
Although he's almost certain to join Boise State, he checks out Wyoming and Wisconsin, the only other schools to offer him.

G Alan Caldwell Horizon HS Brighton, CO

I've decided not to include the GPA and SAT scores until Decision time on the non-Big Names, because otherwise it takes too bloody long to type up all the visits up. If anyone wants me to change that, let me know. Anyway, Air Force, Colorado, Colorado State, Georgia Tech, and Wyoming are his five finalists. Prediction here says Buffaloes or Falcons.

ILB Marco Green Clear Creek HS Idaho Springs, CO
National Rank: 199

He visits Iowa, Notre Dame, Utah, and Wyoming. Hawkeyes and Utes are going at it for him, but it looks like he'll join that hateful MWC cream of the crop.

ILB Buddy Forbes Charleston HS Charleston, TN
National Rank: 510
National Position: 29

Right now, it's us versus Troy for his services and I've a good hunch that we can beat the Trojans to land this kid, who would immediately fill our long-suffering problems at MLB.

G Deion Boone Lincoln County HS Panaca, NV

A beautiful high school he comes from and his final five are Illinois, Northern Illinois, Texas Tech, Virginia, and Wyoming. We're very much contenders here, although Illinois, Virginia, and Texas Tech can't be counted out by any means.

QB Kent Blackburn Louisville HS Louisville, OH

Thus far he's visited Arizona State, Iowa, Oregon, and Wyoming. My hunch tells me he'll end up a Duck.

K Lincoln Huntley Tara HS Baton Rouge, LA

Iowa, Troy, and Wyoming are his current visits. All signs point to his being a Hawkeye, unless Tyrus Glenn can talk him into coming here and replacing Antonio Wells.

ILB Doug Harrison Baltic HS Baltic, SD
National Position: 82
State Rank: 4

Visits: Central Florida, East Carolina, Indiana, and Wyoming. Everything says Pirates, possibly Hoosiers. Will we never catch a MLB that's any good?

S Tony Austin Skyview HS Nampa, ID
National Position: 89
State Rank: 4
State Position: 1
Rating: 49+

Akron, Fairbanks, Indiana and Wyoming are his visits. We hold the narrow edge, but the Hoosiers are right in the mix as well, along with the Sol8 school ironically enough.

DT Gus Hartnett Dupont Manual HS Louisville, KY
National Rank: 900
National Position: 58
State Rank: 15
State Position: 2
Rating: 48-

Kentucky, UL-Lafayette, and Wyoming are his three visits to date. Everything indicates Wildcat blue, with Cowboys brown second. Quite the overrated player, it appears.

DT Claude Watkins Hibbing HS Hibbing, MN
State Rank: 49
State Position: 1
Rating: 42-

Despite the rating, he has High consistency and whip-smartness. I think he'll turn out a better player than most people realize. We're the only ones to even offer him and I suspect there's a decent chance he'll end up starting at some point on the D-line for us.

OLB Ted Daggett Dixie HS St. George, UT
National Position: 91
State Rank: 16
State Position: 3
Rating: 32 (Not visited)

A D.E. brainiac, he's heavily recruited as his final five attests: Colorado, Navy, Rutgers, Utah State, and Wyoming. He'll probably end up a frigging Buffalo.

Decisions

TE Graham Woodard Meeker HS Meeker, CO
National Rank: 123 (#1 TE)
Rating: 71++
GPA: 4.00
SAT: 1484
Major: Economics (24/100 - 94th)

And there's another kick in the junk by Woodard, who goes over to the Falcons and gives them an even better version of Louie Flora. Now I have to go TE hunting again. Oh joy of joys.

At least we kicked sand in the Runnin' Rebels faces, especially their former HS All-American OLB Xavier Pollard, who is no Jon Fulton.

Edit: Other MWC Scores
Utah 34 SD State 7
CSU 45 BYU 7
New Mexico 56 Air Force 17

The Aztecs are exposed as pretenders and the Rams show they're not dead. The Falcons are in a swoon this year and sit at the bottom of the conference, following a bowl appearance season.

New Mexico (3-2, 1-1) (-9) VS Wyoming (2-4, 1-1)

The Lobos being favored is very fair, in my opinion. They have a mildly talented QB and a wicked secondary. Note to self: More running. Put more running in. We'll try and cram Horner down their throats until they puke. This one's a tossup.

I look in the run percentage and realize that *gasp* 18% of our carries are going to the QB. Pfft, no. 90% RB, 10% FB to take advantage of Asquith's running. I also tweak the finesse runs so that we're doing more power running, though not by much. The run percentage, on the other hand, gets cranked up a lot. We'll betting everything on our running game to try and knock them out.

MWC Game of the Week
#6 Utah (5-0, 2-0) (-5) AT #33 Colorado State (4-2, 2-0)

The Rams should get bitchslapped here. I find it amazing they've been able to hang on to the upper echelon of the conference as long as they have.

The great run experiment fails miserably. Horner has his worst outing of his college career with 2.5 ypc. That's all you need to know. They in fact beat us at our own game, their top tailbacks combining for 37 rushes for an ungodly amount of yardage, their starter getting 202 yards rushing.

Win this game and we can write our ticket to avoiding the basement of the conference. Lose and we'll be headed to the cellar. I've given up on predictions. It's too nerve-wracking.

...We score 3 points. DE Joel Harwell (So) gets 13 tackles, 2 assists, and a sack, but so what? It's an embarassing loss and a march towards another depressing season's end.

The most glaring stat: 0/11 on 3rd down conversions

Other MWC Scores:
San Diego State 48 BYU 0
Utah 49 New Mexico 20

The Utes just keep on rolling and the Aztecs are now 5-2, a single win away from being bowl-eligible. How lovely it is to be a California school! We're scraping the bottom now after getting dropped by the Falcons.

Decisions

DE J.R. Colclough

ILB Buddy Forbes

OLB Ted Daggett

S Tony Austin

I'll go back and edit in the expanded writeups later. Right now I'm too depressed to even bother.

Actually, screw the expanded write-ups.

I'm going to re-familiarize myself with the team and this dynasty though, and see about jump-starting it again.
