Critical Game:

Week 17. Chargers (10-5) @ Broncos (11-4). Chargers beat the Broncos in an earlier matchup and clinch #2 seed in the playoffs with a win. A loss means they will receive the #6 seed. We once again struggled in the regular season, but we can put it all behind us with a clutch win here.

Well, we got away with one there. Ackerman continued his struggles--this year he posted the lowest totals in completion %, yards/a, TD/Int ration and qb rating since his sophomore year(2007). He posted a career high in Ints. It appears he is well into the decline phase of his career and we can no longer rely on him to carry us to championships. We host 12-5 Baltimore in the semifinals and are favored by 3.

Another conference championship loss. Ackerman really killed us in this game. Inexcusable, sickening loss.

I'm of half a mind to cut both my "star" fullbacks. They're really dragging us down with poor yards/catch and yards/carry. I was a lot better off with scrub FBs.

QB Ackerman wins 1st team QB... whatever, he was subpar this year.
DT Currie wins 1st team all pro for the 3rd straight year, his 5th all pro award in a row. He's also the League's Strongest Man.

QB Carl Forbes retires after a respectable career. He was 9th on the alltime QB rating list with a 95.1 rating. He had a career record of 39-11-0.

His career line:

Code:
Player Pos Strt End GP GS Att Cmp Pct Yards Avg Lg Forbes, Karl QB 2005 2020 59 29 1345 754 56.0 11105 8.25 86 Player Pos TD Int Sck Yards Rating Forbes, Karl QB 2005 96 38 61 380 95.1

As with Seth Banks, we can only wonder what might have been had we not landed Ackerman in the 06 draft.

I'm now committing to win now. I made another big free agent acquisition on the defensive line this year:

Off to a good start. Ackerman ties his TD record and Alves takes his first regular season snaps--going 3 for 3 and a TD.

Ackerman goes down in week 16 with another rotator cuff injury. Looks like CHargers fans are going to get a taste of the future a little sooner than they'd like.

Good game, Alves. 3 more like that, please. I'd like a championship ring for my right big toe. We are 13-3, #1 seed in the AFC and owners of the best record in the NFL.

We advance to the Super Bowl to face the 13-6 Green Bay Packers. We are 9 point favorites, but Alves has been unreliable and we're going to need the defense to carry us if we want to win.

QB Luke Alves wins the Championship MVP. We hope it's the first of many.

Free Agent addition DE Jackie Blair is named 1st team all pro.

FB Howie Salcido, TE George Angelo and WR Eddie Dahnke are all named 2nd team all pro.

DT Donnell Currie fails to win a post season award this year.

Ackerman easily deserved MVP again this year...another absurd snub. He passed 60,000 career yards and fell 1 short of 600 TDs. Maybe that will be motivation for him to return for 17th season despite the Torn Rotator Cuff.

Staff Hiring: The Fab Four is back intact.

Free Agency:

I signed QB Ackerman to a ticking time bomb contract with a backloaded voidable 3rd year, maxed bonus. If he doesn't retire or void that year, the Chargers are going to sink faster than the Titanic. I rarely see players in their 19th year, but Ackerman is the motherfcking comeback kid--this is his second return from a season ending rotator cuff tear and he's still 78/83 in his 17th season.

We are alreadyin cap trouble and I couldn't sign any new free agents. $11.4m of dead money, mostly from Ackerman's voided third year in the last contract, is eating up our cap. NExt year should be smoother. I do resign some minor reserve players and starting DE Hutchins.

Amateur Draft Report:

This is our best chance to win a superbowl in the immediate. Ackerman might not be back next year. Alves is up to 61/78, good progress.

Don't even ask how we pulled it out this year... we were underdogs at home in 2 playoff games and also underdogs in the superbowl. Ackerman missed most of the season with a broken fibula.

Most of the UFAs will be gone. This is a bit of a reloading year. There is a possibility we're going to eat a huge cap hit next year from Ackerman, so I'll try to keep roster moves to a minimum if I can.

Wow, I wish I'd checked how deep the draft is before I'd signed a free agent RB. The OLBs and RBs just kept hanging around, so I reloaded at those two positions, which have been sources of weakness in recent years. I wouldn't be surprised if all 3 OLBs become starters and 2 of the RBs become breakout star potentials.

There's a treasurre trove of 3rd round calibre undrafted rookie RBs in the free agent pool. Maybe I can switch some of them to TE/WR.

I have a huge problem.

Ackerman is now 77/81, clearly the second best QB behind 80/80 Luke Alves.

However, if I don't start Ackerman, and he doesn't retire, I'm going to have to eat an extra $10m cap hit next year. Alves is a free agent, so I would be forced to cut Ackerman to resign him for the huge deal he'll seek.

If I do start Ackerman, Alves may become disgrunted etc and I'm going to get inferior production at this point.

Right now, I'm leaning towards starting Ackerman, but it might be the wrong choice.

Okay, who saw that coming? Ackerman broke the Passing Yardage record he set in 2011 and the TD record he set in 2012. If he returns in 2024, he would likely break 70,000 yards passing and 700 touchdowns.

The playoff loss was because Ackerman pulled a calf muscle and Alves ended up throwing 3 picks in an offense that was not configured to his strengths. The regular season loss was to 14-2 Detroit. All in all, this was a very strong team--one of the strongest--that just got unlucky in one game. C'est la vie.

QB Ackerman captures his first League MVP Award since 2018 and also gains Offensive Player of the Year and 1st Team QB awards.

WR Drew Grier garners a 1st team WR award for the second year running.

Sophomore Matthew Lima is named 1st team All Pro CB, though he played the year at safety/nickelback.

DT Donnell Currie is named 2nd team all pro DT.

This offseason could get ugly if Ackerman plays hardball and forces us to eat his contract.

Breaking News

QB Ryan Ackerman retires.

He was born in Monroe, NC on 5-17-1982. He attented college at Iowa and was drafted 1(1) by the San Diego Chargers in the inaugural empty cupboard draft. He is one of the best prospects I've ever seen in FOF(Rating: 47/95 Dash: 4.6 BP: 19 Agi: 7.0 Sole: 46) and his career statistics are unlikely to be matched.

He seemed to possess intangibles beyond his ratings--several times coming back from career threatening injuries to post MVP seasons. He will be sorely missed and never replaced.

Career Awards:

League MVP: 6 times
Championship MVP: 9 times
Offensive Player of the Year: 5 times
1st Team Quarterback: 7 times(He got robbed...should be 11 times)
2nd Team Quarterback: 1 time

Other Stats:

Only 30 fumbles in 220 career games.
Rushing: 271-1170-6 with 4.3 Yards/Carry.

Ackerman's records could fill a book. He not only holds the record for every single season, single game and career(except completion%) passing category, but in most single season/game categories he hold the 2nd, 3rd, etc best seasons as well. For example, he has the top 10 single seasons for passing touchdowns and the top 7 passing yards seasons. He leads the next best QB by nearly 13,000 yards despite playing in 26 less games.

Ryan Ackerman, we salute you. Good luck in your future endeavours.

2024 Off Season:

Staff returns intact.

Free Agency:

I make another big splash in FA. In a surprise move, I kick 2 time Championship MVP Luke Alves to the curb and lock up 84/84 Eddie Dobler for the next 7 years at a below market price.

I resign WR Eddie Dahnke to a 3-yr, 4m deal and CB Leslie McCarthy to a 1-yr 4m deal. The rest of my signings were minor and I lose starters at CB(Shula), TE and DT(Currie). I have $10.7 in cap space still available. My biggest weakness is DL right now, but not coincidentally, great DTs and DEs are hard to find.

The player I really wanted in Rd 1(a much better DT) was taken 1 spot ahead of me.

Forbes is a bust, I am not going to make skill-based picks any more... I passed up better combine guys for him. Really, no one to get excited about from this draft. Went for need in RD 1/2 instead of BPA because of how thin I'm getting at DT.

Wow, Ackerman was the MAN. Like some kind of uber-McNair, immense talent but can't stay healthy, he missed 68 games in his career by my count. Just imagine if he had stayed on the field more in the latter half of his career.. 1000 TDs would have been in reach, maybe even 100,000 yards if he had a few super duper seasons.

Yeah, Ackerman was ridiculous. As hard it is to believe, it seems like he played above his ratings.

If he had not missed those 68 games, we might have been able to expect:

21,610 yards
209 TDs

Going by his career averages(though he actually missed time in the peak of his career). That would put him above 90,000 Passing Yards and within shouting distance of 900 Passing TDs.

Alas, we are left to wonder what might have been. His final year was amazingly the best year of his career and he had less talent at WR and OL than the earlier peak years.

Also, I think I sabotaged his stats somewhat. When I had Banks and Forbes in their peaks, I would rest Ackerman whenever he had any injury except a cold or chlamydia or whatever that wouldn't threaten a season ending injury. Even still, he was very injury prone and I was lucky his career wasn't ended several times over by injuries.

We sit at 4-0, but I've lost 3 of my top 4 cornerbacks, a starting safety, my starting TE(FB Kelly Case) and both my starting DEs... many of them are out for the season. 8 players are on Injured reserve.

On the bright side, Eddie Dobler is on pace to break Ackerman's TD record.

13 championships. Eddie Dobler breaks Ackerman's single season Passing Yards record in his first season! He was also a spectacular run threat, going 514 yards on 85 carries and scoring 9 rushing touchdowns. He easily wins the quadfecta: League MVP, Championship MVP, Offensive POTY, 1st Team QB.

WR Drew Grier shatters the previous single season Receiving record set by our own Wesley Francis(1947 yards) with a 2090 yard season. He'll be back for his 5th year with the Chargers next year. He is named 1st team all pro.

No other Chargers won awards.

An early season injury epidemic wiped out nearly the entire starting secondary and I was forced to rework my defensive game plan. We ended up first in stopping the run(yards/carry) this year instead of our usual 1st in yards/attempt allowed. Because of my house rules, I had to start several 11/23 etc level undrafted rookies at defensive back positions. Our investment into LBs in the last few years has really paid off. This offseason we need to improve the DL and DBs after losing a lot of our best talent their and failing to reload.

2025 Off Season:

16th Year LT Ross Goodwin retires. He was our starting Left Tackle for the last 12 straight seasons, but he was not particularly special, just an affordable and effective pass blocker. We will look for a replacement in free agency and the draft.

8th year DT Bubba Foley retired. He was out first round draft pick in 2017, but he never lived up to his billing despite starting 6/8 seasons. In 2024 he was benched in favor of rookie Meier in our 3-4 alignment.

Former Chargers draft pick WR Jeffrey Ochs was inducted into the Hall of Fame. He caught 800 balls out of 1406 targets for 12,674 yards and 91 TDs in his career in his 11 year career. He chose to enter as a New York Giant despite earning 3 of his 4 championship rings with the Chargers.

We return all of our staff from 2024.

I'd like to return DEs Hutchins and Blair if they have reasonable demands. I think I'll be able to return 1-2 of the WRs as well. We have the cap room to sign a big free agent this year.

DE Blair returns for 3 years at 8m/per. I'm not thrilled about the cost, but with how far I am under the cap I can afford to overpay to keep on of my most important players. It's too bad I had to let go over Currie in 2024. I sign an 11-year LT who is 59/66 overall to a 4-year deal at 3.2m/yr. Not bad, I needed a new LT who can pass block. LT Deloach is better off on the right side.

Amateur Draft Report:

Rnd 1 - Nick Sales, DT, Michigan State - Rat: 42/56 40: 5.0 BP: 35 AD: 7.6
Rnd 2 - Ricardo Fields, DT, Oklahoma State - Rat: 20/52 40: 5.3 BP: 31 AD: 7.8
Rnd 3 - Lawrence Lindsay, S, Texas - Rat: 28/53 40: 4.5 BP: 18 AD: 7.2
Rnd 4 - Toby Mayes, S, Auburn - Rat: 13/48 40: 4.5 BP: 15 AD: 7.4
Rnd 5 - Kirk Keith, WR, Alabama - Rat: 26/46 40: 4.4 BP: 14 AD: 7.1
Rnd 6 - Robbie Gindin, WR, Eastern Michigan - Rat: 17/38 40: 4.5 BP: 26 AD: 7.0
Rnd 7 - Roger Cole, RB, Boston College - Rat: 23/38 40: 4.7 BP: 11 AD: 7.1

This is a very deep draft on the DL and I take advantage. I love Sales--how often do you get a 42/56 DT with great measurables at 1(32)? He might be a better fit at DE though. It will be a tough call whether to convert him or not.

Fields looks pretty good as well and increased by 01/01 after the draft.

Dobler declined from 86/86 to 80/83. Very worrisome considering how much I've got invested in him. This team is better than last year's I think. Our front 7 is really coming together--we have 7 quality starters there and I don't have to platoon too much at DL.

Eddie Dobler sweeps the big 4 awards for the second year in a row.

DE Jackie Blair makes me look good with a 16 sack, 38 hurry season in the first year of his contract en route to being named 2nd team DE.

This is our fourth 19-0 season, but it's our first since 2016. We've appeared to easily weather the loss of Ryan Ackerman--Eddie Dobler's numbers with us the last two seasons are well above Ackerman's career averages and Dobler has yet to miss a game. Dobler's QB Rating in the last two years is 117.6 compared to 105.6 for Ackerman's career.

Drew Grier doesn't win any awards, but he eeks onto 1st place in receiving yards, catches and 3rd place in receiving touchdowns on the Charger's career leaderboard with a fine 53 catch season for 1065 yards and 14 touchdowns in 12 starts.

Players Under Contract: 34 Inactive: 0 On Active Roster: 34 Salary Cap: $80,600,000 Cap Room: $30,420,000

My main resigning targets(demands allowing):

C Luchene, B.J
FB Salcido, Howie
LB Roberson, Marshall

I might also resign Lima on a huge 1 year bonus-heavy deal since I have so much cap space. An impact free agent is not out of the question, but I also could use a quality backup QB if I can't resign 10th year backup Cole Reilly.

I can almost gaurantee Grier is gone. He'll ask for 10m/year surely. Same for Whitfield except $6m/year.

Meet the newest member of the 2026 Chargers:

Yep, big contract--mainly the bonus, but I have to use my cap room or lose it and with no renegotiations allowed, I have no mechanism to use up extra cap room. Even after his signing, I'm $14.7m under the cap.

I resign both my starting centers to reasonable deals and sign Lima to a 3-year deal worth around 4 million a year--much less than I expected. OLB Roberson and DE Rex are resigned to minor deals as well. I lose out on the rest of the major players I mentioned.

In the draft, I'm looking for Defensive Backs and Wide Receivers--two positions where I've historically been very effective at finding excellent bargains. I also would like to find an impact TE or FB if circumstances permit.

Huge impact draft. The 1st, 3rd and 4th(and 7th) rounders are potential starters. Dunlap can fill a reserve RB role or possibly see a conversion to another position. OLB Garza and LT Garrison busted down a few points or I'd be talking them up as well.

Very busy offseason. I make some key signings and uncharacteristically resign my top CB and WR to reasonable contracts--about 4m/yr each.

Is anyone having a hard time keeping up with the roster? I've been flying through seasons and not going over individual players too much, but I can do a summary of each position group if that would be helpful and interesting.

I'm trying a platoon between DT Meier(92 Run Stopping) and DE Nick Sales at RDE after deciding I have too much linebacking talent to use the 4-3.

Dobler wins his 3rd straight quadfecta(MVP, Champ MVP, Off. POTY, 1st Team QB). Play for play, this was his best year, but he missed 2 games.

SS Marvin Meier was named 2nd team all pro. He recorded 95 tackles, 3 interceptions, 16 defensed passes and 3 forced fumbles.

This is our 15th championship. We've won 15 of the last 19 championships and we're nearing 80% career winning percentage(remember, I went 21-43 my first 4 years. Since then we're 268-35-1!!!!)

No players retire, but my long time ubercoach Robert Lindsay Retires. He went 328-88-3 in 23 years and won 12 championships. He finished his career at Excellent in every HC category.

I have to replace him with a scrub for a year.

I also replace my D. coordinator with a very marginally better one.

Main targets are LT DeLoach, FB Case and OLB Vecchio. None are critical, but they'd be pretty hard to replace this year. If I can bring back the WRs cheaply, I will.

Round 6 LT is a big bust(-01/-06), but the rest look like keepers.

First two rounds give me some good utility players. The best receiver of the two will start at TE. Blitzgerald(lol typo but lets make it a nickname) could see time at RB depending on how his ratings look post camp--especially in 3rd down and short where I lack a good option.

I love Bidney in the 4th. Players like that are the meat and potatoes of FOF2k4 drafting.

What a joke... when you lose your 4 best players and several other starters, you're just not going anywhere no matter how good your game planning and roster management are.

This is our earliest playoff exit ever.

We were crippled by the loss of our coach. Our offensive numbers were way off. Despite all that, we got ourselves in a position to win(#1 Seed, 14-2) and just couldn't overcome injuries. Maybe 150 Injury setting is too high... I seem to lose an inordinate number of players each year, but maybe that is how it is in the real NFL.

Offseason:

Surprising no one, Ryan Ackerman is inducted into the Hall of Fame with 100% of the vote.

I have two unexpected and harmful retirements: My starting LT Andy Atkinson and my starting DE Jackie Blair. As if things weren't bad enough.

I hire a pretty good coach with Ex Offense, VG Defense, Injury. He'll do.

We lose everyone rated 60+ in FA and sign a veteran DE to a favorable 3 yr, 4m/yr contract.

Amateur Draft Report:

Rnd 1 - John Kinzie, DE, Rutgers - 18/58 40: 4.76 BP: 29 AD: 7.40
Rnd 2 - Kenyon Friedgen, T, UCLA - 19/60 40: 5.15 BP: 45 AD: 7.44
Rnd 3 - Lionel Bailie, CB, Virginia Tech - 27/51 40: 4.48 BP: 14 AD: 6.98
Rnd 4 - Larry Mueller, ILB, Grambling - 27/46 40: 4.79 BP: 25 AD: 7.50
Rnd 5 - Darrin Hudson, S, Indiana - 20/47 40: 4.66 BP: 24 AD: 7.17
Rnd 6 - Rich Jarvis, RB, Washington - 25/37 40: 4.54 BP: 15 AD: 7.09
Rnd 7 - Bryce Hendrix, RB, Arkansas - 29/43 40: 4.70 BP: 11 AD: 7.24

DE John Kinzie busts slightly... I pray that he can be our starting DE, but he might be a mirage. RT Friedgen(huge breakout +08 potential IIRC) and CB Bailie are steals and will probably start on week one.

I think I'm going to end it here. I finished out Ackerman's career and then proved that I could dominate without Ackerman. I really don't have anything more I'd like to do with the dynasty.

Here is the season by season breakdown:

I'm pleased with my success, but I am weary of the constriction from the house rules--they force constant player turnover and in the end they didn't prevent my reign of terror. After the 2009 season when we went undefeated, the dynasty lost some of its magic--I started to focus mainly on the trials and triumphs of Ackerman and the rest of the team took a back seat.
