I'm not sure if this has been mentioned somewhere else, but the season two leads are Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn. I'm not sure about those choices, but we will see what happens.

I would have less faith in Vince.

Agreed.. I just don't see him fitting in a role like the first True Detective, but who knows.

Yeah, I'm pretty sold on Farrell. I think Vaughn can do good work, but wouldn't have fit in with Season 1's mood. The show's earned enough goodwill though that I'll gladly wait to see what sort of mood Season 2 has before judging them. They cast Vince Vaughn, not Keanu Reeves and Arianna Grande!

Vince Vaughn.. Interesting. I hope he isn't as bad as he was in the Psycho remake.

I have faith in a motivated Vince Vaughn and I think he'll be motivated out the butthole for TD. Also, with these two as the leads I can guarantee the titty quotient of season 2 is going to be through the roof.

Heck, up until 3 years ago McConaughey was coming off Fool's Gold; Surfer, Dude; Ghosts of Girlfriends Past and Failure to Launch.

Yep, 100%. Farrell is perfect IMO, but I'll wait and see re: Vaughn - they casting folks hit a home run for the first season.

Season 2 begins tonight. Hoping this can come anywhere close to last season's story and acting.

As much as I like GoT, this is the series that got me to take the plunge on SlingTV and get HBO with it. Really looking forward to it tonight.

I liked the ep. I can see the complaints all over the internet about it being all atmosphere (and what atmosphere it was!), but it's a pilot episode. It's setting up the mood and the characters and the background. The show really starts with the characters meeting at the end.

So I never saw the first series, but figured I would give this a shot (need something to fill my normal GOT/TWD Sundays). Is it always so dark side of humanity style? I mean, I wasn't expecting roses and sunshine, but that was a pretty bleak premier. Was the first series like that?

Still planning to watch. I enjoyed the episode--just surprised how dark it is.

Lots of showers with lots of scrubbing required. Wife and I only made it through 3 or 4 episodes last season.

Im going into this with the mindset that it wont be as good as the original. But I was presently surprised with episode 1. I barely have an idea of what the F is going on, but i figure they'll rectify that shortly.

I heart Rachel McAdams

I agree with most of this. I'm assuming we won't get a transcendent performance like McConaughey's in S1, so I'm trying to just judge this on its own merits instead of comparing it to Season 1 the whole time and setting myself up for disappointment. (And iirc it wasn't really until ep 3 that season 1 really started getting good.)

That said, I thought some of the lines they gave Vince Vaughn were laughably bad, and his delivery/overall screen presence weak.

Haven't watched ep 1 yet, but based on the short I saw when Vaughn was on the Jimmy Fallon show the other day I'm not buying Vaughn in a serious role.

BTW worth watching that Fallon interview with Vaughn, if just for the story of Firth revealing to the two of them shortly before that he was once a murder suspect for an unsolved crime:

I enjoyed Season 1 but thought it was pretty overrated (from a story perspective; the acting was awesome). It ended up being a more straightforward story than the general internet community tried making it into, and it surprised me that there wasn't much backlash against it.

Anyway, when I heard about early reviews being down on this season, and some fairly muted reaction to the first episode after it aired since I missed it Sunday night, I thought that was good news for me. And it delivered there for some of the reasons mentioned above, and it has me more excited for the season than I was a couple days ago.

I'm of the opinion that season one was brilliant, and comparing season 2 to it, would end up disappointing viewers.

I really enjoyed the first episode. 3 of the 4 characters seemed very very interesting and enjoyable. Vince Vaughn's was guilty party that didn't seem all that interesting to me. It's just the first episode, so there's time for his character to get better.

Overall though, my expectations were met. I thought there were a few standout scenes, and i am very much looking forward to episode 2.

I liked the first episode well enough.

Vince Vaughn wasn't great, but I give the guy a lot of credit for trying something outside his usual, comfort zone. Vince Vaughn is great at being Vince Vaughn, but I like that he's willing or interested in trying to be something else from time to time.

He's also got pretty great screen presence, which helps quite a bit.

And I'm sure he can play evil... He is a Republican after all (I kid, I kid!! )

I liked Season 2.1 quite a bit. I do not see all the issues with being able to follow characters either as to me it was fairly obvious who was who and what was what. Apparently these reviewers do not watch GoT then. I would also like to state that Season 1.1, I fell asleep half way through that episode and didnt start watching again until 1.4 and then was hooked. So even the highly acclaimed Season 1 didn't grab me immediately.

I think some of the problems are A) people compare it to season 1, which is unfair and B) people want everything handed to them and explained to them immediately and don't have the patience to let the story develop at it's own pace.

I think Vince Vaughn is doing alright. Again, it is one episode. Nobody thought Matthew McConaughey was ever going to win any type of acting award when he played David Wooderson on 'Dazed and Confused.' Alright, alright, alright.....

It's an 8 episode season. It's also not last seasons show. If you want to invest an hour a week. do it. You should know what to expect by now.

Also, go watch Season 1. Zero plot connection to S2, but a really good 8 hours of television.

I'm happy so far with Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams. Great characters, well drawn. The Taylor Kitsch storyline seems just a *little* hackneyed. And as much as I love Vince Vaughn, I don't think he can carry off the weight of his character.

I'm no scientist, but I'm pretty sure that being shot point blank with a shotgun will put a hole in you, bullet proof vest or not.

I actually think the casting of Vaughn is perfect. The character is in over his head and out of his element, and I think Vince encapsulates that perfectly. Plus, he has charisma to spare.

As far as the show as a whole, not doing it for me really. All the characters are right out of central casting and the actors aren't doing a lot to bring them to life. Not sure I give two shits about the story either.

It was dark, and there was no shot of any wound. Blood spatter is the last thing I'd be looking for or seeing. This isn't some cheesy action flick where blood flies out 30 feet after being shot. I think he's dead. True Detective doesn't seem like the show that fucks with fans.

Now, there is a chance I'm wrong. I remember during season 1 thinking at times that neither main character would make it through the season.

I really enjoyed this episode. Vince Vaughn's role solidified with me. Looking forward to seeing where it goes.

Wild ass theories-

1. Vaughn was having an affair with Farrell's wife, the rape never happened. Vaughn have him some random dude to kill.

Line about Vaughn needing IVF was kinda peculiar.

2. Even wilder, Rust Kohle was seen in 1995. He spent at least 4 years undercover and an indeterminate amount of time recouperating.

Meaning that he easily could have fathered a kid in or around 1988-9 which at least brings up the possibility that Tim Riggin's mom is his ex wife and Cohle is his father.
