Know when to hold em.. Foz returns to Poker..

Well.. kinda sorta.

Long time regulars remember that I used to play a bunch of online poker (with the FOFC group, and in tournaments, including my largest win, about $1100 in one of the old weekly tournaments open to us: (Need help today ) Poker question. - Front Office Football Central)

Well, since the online poker ban, that's of course gone away. But, lately, I've gotten the urge to start playing again. I played in a tournament at Foxwoods last month (lost most of my stack with KK v AA), but planning my second Vegas trip in January, where I plan to play at least three poker tournaments. But my game has obviously atrophied in the years since Online Poker's ban. So.. this is an attempt to chronicle my attempts to get back into top poker shape and hopefully, a net win in Vegas come January.

Round 1: Preperation

THese are the tools that I'm going to use to try to help me get my online poker skills:

A) Reading:

Of course, the two seminal books on poker and its variants are the two Super System books from Doyle Brunson. While the first book is not available on Kindle right now, I picked up the original used, and the second book for my Kindle. I also plan to pick up Harrington on Hold Em (I may grab the Cash Games Harrington books if I decide to play cash games while I'm in Vegas)

I also ordered a copy of Master Poker (Official site of Master Poker - NL Texas Hold'em poker software... and doing extended tournaments at a variety of tournament types (Sit and gos, long WSOP Like tournament setups, things close to the settings I'll be facing in these weekly tournaments, etcetera.. while I wish it had online download ability (you can download the demo and play up to 10 table-tournaments with it), I had to wait for it to be shipped to me when I ordered it.

Round 2: The Grim Truth

As things stand right now, I am, or hopefully WAS, "Dead Money". So far, I've identified the following leaks in my game:

A) Too loosely playing A-X Suited.

It's nice to know that if you make a flush on the river, that you'll have the nut flush, but how often do you make a flush, even if you start 40% of the way there with your hole cards? Something like 6.5%.

Too many times I found myself playing Ace-"Something", and while I didn't hit my flush, I hit Ace-rag-rag on the board, only to find myself dominated (ie, outkicked). So, I've found myself cutting down on the amount I play those cards.

B) Suited Connectors: A time and a place for them

Everyone knows that suited connectors are the hotness ever since Kid Poker, Daniel Negreanu, started throwing it around. It has its place, suited connectors have good implied odds, and can be disguised easily.

But played improperly, it can be a slow leak in your game, like a balloon with a pinhole leak.. the more air you put in, the more air spills out. You need good pot odds to play them (preferably, multiple opponents who have limped in so you can see a flop cheaply and there's a good chance someone else will have made a (second-best) hand to pay you off.

So, avoid suited connectors unless you're in the right position.

Tournament 1:

First big hand was hand 4: Honestly, it's a dead money play by my opponent.. I put him on a steal.. was afraid of being dominated, but I figured that if he had woken up with AK or AQ (or A-pair board) then there wasn't much I could do.. but it just seemed.. to be overly aggressive in the "I'm projecting a really big hand here" kind of way.

Unfortunately, I fall into a trap hand, I couldn't record it (I'm going to have it save every hand starting next tournament), but 100/200 blinds.. SB player Conception raises to 600, I make it 2K to go, called)

Flop Q 9 10

He checks, I bet, raised all in, and I called.

Knocked out of the tournament :P

Level 1: No real interesting hands, up and down slightly, end with $3,075 in chips (+$75)

Level 2: This is an exercise in frustration. I'm getting nothing in cards, really, I'm getting lots of practice hitting the fold button. The urge to play a hand is palpable.. but I can just imagine the frustration level is higher sitting in the tournament itself. To my joy, I finally get rewarded with AA, in middle position, but my table image is so tight (because I'm playing less then 10% of my hands), a raise of 300 (3xBB) wins me the blinds only as everyone folds. *sighs*.

The cards do start to come late in the level, and I win a couple more sets of blinds, and then my AKx knocks out a short stacked KJ, but my cards go dead again, and I'm again slightly ahead, but feel like I'm stuck in neutral

Stats at Level 3: (100/200 Blinds)

Players Remaining: 1128 (of 1820)
Chip Stack: $3,450 (Tied for 698th)

Hands Played: 12 of 120 (10%) -- Rock Solid (according to Master Poker)
Aggression Level: 9 of 12 (75%) -- Good aggression
Limp Percentage: 1 of 8 (12%) -- Solid Presence
Folded Best Hand: 1 of 8 (12.5%) -- Hopefully you'll improve int he long run

BTW, I can't see the players personalities (because that's something I need to learn to read).. Here's the breakdown of personalities in Master Poker:

Y=You. Or more accurately, Me.

D=Dead Money. This is the majority of players. Some are horrible, some are tight/weak, some of them are bluffing maniacs.. but these are the average poker player you'll find at a table.

T=Tough: These are the players who will get a read on the way you play. Are you constantly folding the blinds when raised? They'll plink plink plink you away, daring you to play back at them.

A=Aggressive: THe other side of the Tough Player: Get into a pot with them, and be prepared to sweat. They'll try to only get it in with the best of it, still, this is aggressive, not stupid, butyou show weakness, they will take advantage of it.

Tonight's Tourneys will be held with a format similar to the Casino that I'll be staying at for their Daily/Weekly:

Buy in: $45
Rebuys: Yes, till hand 60 (The casino format is one $20 rebuy any time in the first hour for 4,000 more chips, but unfortunately the software doesn't support it:
Chips: $4500 (Blinds start at 25-50)
Usual amount of players: 40 or so
First prize, usually around $850

Tournament 1: This time I'll need to play a bit more aggressively, as I have 1/6th the amount of hands per level that I did in last night. I will use my one rebuy at the beginning, so I'm down for $90 in this tournament.

Level 1:

Hand 11: Have a feeling I played this badly, I really need to work on my post flop play. But I luck out with TPTK on the river, and the fact that my opponent checked on the turn after raising me on the flop gave me confidence to make this bet:

Starting hands:

Seat 1: Ac - Ks (Fozzie)
Seat 2: Jc - 8d (Frightful One)
Seat 3: Ah - 5s (Mockery)
Seat 4: Ad - Qc (Stryation)
Seat 5: Td - 9h (Nobel Winner)
Seat 6: 7d - 4c (Deadpool)
Seat 7: Kd - Ts (Spokesperson)
Seat 8: 6c - 2d (Moderator)
Seat 9: 5h - 2c (Chiseler)
Seat 10: 8s - 6d (BigBadMama)

Hand 11:

Antes/Blinds: 0/25/50

1.Fozzie(Y) began w/8,775 chips.
2.Frightful One(A) began w/9,500 chips.
3.Mockery(D) began w/9,275 chips.
4.Stryation(A) began w/8,875 chips.
5.Nobel Winner(T) began w/8,875 chips.
6.Deadpool(T) began w/9,075 chips.

Fozzie checks.
Stryation checks.

The pot is: 4,475

The RIVER comes: 7s - Qs - 6s - 5d - Kc

Fozzie bets 4,475.
Stryation folds.

Fozzie wins a pot of 8,950 without a showdown.

Up to 10,975 from 9,000 at the end of level 1, that's my only real hand of note.

Level 2: Hand 24. Chalk this one up to rebuy madness, I guess. I was afraid of him flopping a set, but I couldn't see him having AA, and TT, 22 or 77 didn't fit the pattern here. I had him on a lower kicker.. turns out it was a good read.

Starting hands:

Seat 1: As - Kc (Fozzie)
Seat 2: Tc - 6d (Frightful One)
Seat 3: 8h - 7h (Mockery)
Seat 4: Ks - Jd (Stryation)

The pot is: 21,050

The RIVER comes: 2s - 7c - Ac - Ts - Qd

The FINAL POT is: 21,050

SHOWDOWN ...

Fozzie shows As - Kc
Chiseler shows Ah - 9h

Main pot involving:

-Fozzie
-Chiseler
***Fozzie wins 21,050 with a Pair of Aces.

Play a couple of speculative hands in the level and lose some chips, but sitll the tournament leader with 19,650 after two levels.

Level 3 is two steps forward, two steps back. The player immediately to my right is a tough player, and they win a big hand last level to take the chip lead from me. I win one, lose one (to the player on my right), and I finish the rebuy period in 2nd place with 19,200 chips

Level 4: Win a couple thousand chips off a player who seems to be typifying dead money, I saw them play two garbage hands earlier (one of them against me, where they bluffed with 62x!!!) and I manage to push him off, despite having K-High Squadoosh on the flop. Then give some of it back pushing at a pot where I have low pair and some one check calls with medium pair, and we check it down. Still above 20K (20,100) and 3rd of 37 remaining (50 started)

Level 5: Again, stuck in neutral, I need to change gears here somehow. BigBadMama (the player with the big chip stack) is picking off the shortstacks left and right, knocking out a couple players to increase their stack to near 40K. And they're right next to me. ($20,500)

Level 6: Lose a third of my stack, but I'm generally ok with how I played it I think, I think I need to lower my "continuation" bet size from pot sized to half to three quarter pot size:

Starting hands:

Seat 1: Ad - Kd (Fozzie)
Seat 2: Ks - Qh (Frightful One)
Seat 3: Ac - 6h (Mockery)
Seat 4: Kc - Tc (Brit Honey)
Seat 5: 8c - 6s (Knut)
Seat 6: Qs - 5s (Flightful)
Seat 7: Ah - 7c (Spokesperson)
Seat 8: (Empty chair)
Seat 9: Jd - 5h (Papal Shark)
Seat 10: 9h - 3s (BigBadMama)

Hand 107:

Antes/Blinds: 0/300/600

1.Fozzie(Y) began w/19,900 chips.
2.Frightful One(A) began w/20,363 chips.
3.Mockery(D) began w/13,250 chips.
4.Brit Honey(D) began w/12,274 chips.
5.Knut(A) began w/8,088 chips.

Frightful One folds.
Brit Honey calls 1,200.

The pot is: 4,200

The FLOP comes: Td - 5c - 2s

Fozzie bets 4,200.
Brit Honey calls 4,200.

The pot is: 12,600

The TURN comes: Td - 5c - 2s - 4c

Fozzie checks.
Brit Honey pushes all-in, making it 6,274 to go.
Fozzie folds.

Brit Honey wins a pot of 18,874 without a showdown.

The good news is: I finally have a hand to play back at BigBadMama (whose continued to bully the table, basically raising every unopened pots to levels where one lost hand equals half or all of your stack gone. They tried a trap, flat calling in early position with JJ.. I called as well, sensing the trap with Big Slick, and TPTK came in, and from the betting pattern, I knew they didn't hit trips on the flop.

Starting hands:

Seat 1: Ah - Kd (Fozzie)
Seat 2: 5s - 2h (Frightful One)
Seat 3: 8c - 2c (Mockery)

7.Spokesperson(T) began w/8,775 chips.
8.(Empty chair)
9.(Empty chair)
10.BigBadMama(T) began w/44,375 chips.

Knut has the Button.

PREFLOP betting begins:

BigBadMama calls 600.
Fozzie calls 600.
Frightful One folds.
Mockery folds.

The pot is: 2,100

The FLOP comes: 4s - 3h - Ks

Spokesperson checks.
BigBadMama checks.
Fozzie bets 2,100.
Spokesperson folds.
BigBadMama raises 3,900, making it 6,000 to go.
Fozzie raises all-in for 5,800, making it 11,800 to go.
BigBadMama calls 5,800.

The pot is: 25,700

Level 7: We're already at 500-1000, so I know that pre-flop play is important here. I manage to win a coin flip (10-10 over a pre-flop all-in AQ) to gain an
extra 12K in chips, good enough to move me to third overall.

Then, later in the level.. I won the hand, but I'm still second guessing myself about the call of the real big bet on the flop. The rule of poker is "If you play it the same way you would if you could magically see everyone's cards, you're playing +EV. I very nearly gave him credit for either having a pocket pair higher then mine, or having flopped trips on the flop. But luckily for me, I "only" had to fade two over cards, and then when all the chips came in, the over cards + a flush draw. But luck was a lady, and I win a huge pot:

Just before Level 7 ends.. I win another big pot. I think I played this one pretty good, and I at least extracted SOME post flop value (especially with the river bet, He must have put me on a hand that completely missed to call ANY bet with two over cards on the board, never mind as it turned out, I had flopped top set. at the end of Level 7, I'm the chip leader of the 16 remaining players with just over 70K in chips, but again, the blinds are rising rapidly, we're playing 1-2K blinds, so I can't be loose at all, with the blinds going 2-4K in just twenty hands.

Level 8: I win a decent pot (about 10K in total) with a half-pot continuation bet on the flop, stretching me out to 76K. ANd I know the rising blinds are getting to me, and they're apparently getting to others too, as we have this hand:

We're only 5 handed (with 11 players remaining), so it's a bit flying blind here, I lose a small pot when my second pair queens loses to a K-rag top pair that was played mostly because the stakes were so low, about 10% of my stack.

We're now at 1500-3000 (and still trying to knock out one player to get to the final table, and entering Level 9 I have just over 104K in chips, about 30K more then 2nd place).

Finally, at hand 165, we knock out the 11th place finisher, and this is what the final table starts at:

Hand 165:

Skinflint the short stack goes out quickly, losing a hand to Nugget Valet on hand 166.

I raise on the button with 88, but a 30K raise from Nugget Valet chases me out, and he takes over the chip lead.

Youngblood knocks out Sanity on hand 169, and I let out a small cheer.. who cares if it's only 50 players, this is my first cash when playing this, and that's pretty good.. now let's see if I can win it.

Mochomo gets knocked out by Smash, so there's only 6 of us left.

Did I say 6? Make that five, as Brit Honey falls to Youngblood who pulls a three outer on a dominated hand (A6 vs 65), who takes the chip lead.

Hand 173: I'm disappointed that I let him force me off this hand, as for only the second time in 21 post-flop plays, I throw away the best hand. Too tight/weak post-flop. Short-handed table play is definitely something I need to work on.

Hand 182: Get tired of being bullied around, and re-raise with KQc in the small blind.. thankfully my opponent who ALSO has KQ (unsuited), folds, and I chip back up to around 100K. In third place of five..

Hand 183: Wow. Being aggressive pays when a the third spade hits the board, and an all-in bet convinces him that I've got a made hand. It was a bluff.. and I'm glad it worked, but I'm already cautioning myself to try to limit the amount of times I bet without at least having a semi-bluff:

Honestly, I'm squirming during heads-up. As you may have noticed from the description, Smash is an Aggressive player. And that's exactly what he is. You raise with weak cards, he'll play right back at you and make you make a decision. For once, I make the RIGHT decision, and it turns out to be the FINAL decision of the tournament:

Starting hands:

Seat 1: 8s - 3h (Fozzie)
Seat 2: (Empty chair)
Seat 3: (Empty chair)
Seat 4: (Empty chair)

8.Smash(A) began w/168,412 chips.

So, I "win" $1,449 for first place. THat's a LOT of hands in different situations. I think it's the only "tourney" I play tonight:

Day 2:
Tournaments: 1
Entry Fees: $90
Winnings: $1,449
Plus/Minus: $1,359 to the good.

Virtual drinks are on me!

BTW, if anyone has praise/criticism for some of the hands I posted, please let me know (Why do I have the feeling that I'll have more criticism then I'll know what to do with? )

I'll be interested in seeing how the software holds up. I've been thinking of trying to get back into poker, but I want to get some practice before I put up some cash. I've looked for a program to practice with and have come up empty. I know some people like Turbo, but I tried the demo and read the criticisms of it and decided to pass. I even thought of just trying to make my own.

The software's holding up, I haven't seen it make a brilliant read that marks a TOP player, but there's some things that it's very hard to get an AI to simulate without letting it cheat (IE, peek at your cards, which this game does not). The Aggressive players are a study in frustration management. The heads up match was just so frustrating as I suppose it would be, because my heads-up opponent was constantly putting the pressure on ME, instead of letting me do it to him

Same settings as before (and same breakdown as the large tournaments, 20% Tough,20% Agressive, 60% dead). Only change is 60 players instead of 50.

(Take the rebuy at the beginning, of course)

The first couple levels are frustrating, as the hands I get aren't played at and the couple times I go in with marginal stuff, I get raised off the hand. I manage to get back to the starting 9K in chips when presto gets a set, and I manage to coax two bets out of another player (turns out he had a smaller pocket pair)

Hand 42: I hate how I played this hand. Looking at it now, I feel like I deserved to lose and be knocked out, but the aggressive three bullets (including the all-in river attack) wins me a pretty good sized pot. Again, I had nothing, which is something you have to do VERY rarely. But, as it turns out, he was chasing the flush. I'm not sure which of us played it worse, actually.

Starting hands:

Seat 1: As - Kd (Fozzie)
Seat 2: Qh - Jd (Clapper)
Seat 3: 5c - 3h (IWillBiteBack)
Seat 4: Kc - Td (RunItUp)

Seat 6: Ah - 8s (DaHeatIsOn)

I somehow lost my first post on this: I think I'm behind, but here are the hands I put him on (Note: I "know" that he's a Tough player from the description that I've posted above T=Tough, but I'm not going by it.) I don't have much of a read on him, since it's early and I haven't played many pots against him.

Possible hands:

AA, KK, QQ, JJ - Very possible. He's representing a huge hand, three betting on the flop, and then re-raising all-in post flop. This seems to be more designed to shut down the hand, because he's probably afraid I'm chasing the flush. If it's KK QQ or JJ, I have 12 outs (9 flush cards and three aces). If it's AA, I'm down to 9 outs)

Set: I don't see him three betting pre-flop with Tens, 3s or 5's here, but I guess it's possible. Nine outs (- some possibilities where the board pairs to make him a full hourse.

Paired the flop: Doesn't seem likely (three bet with A-10?) but putting here for completeness stake

No made hand: Seems like and awfully risky bluff (what if I had a huge pocket pair?) But it's again possible

Odds on making a winning hand on the turn or the river)

9 Outs (Just the flush) 35%
12 Outs (The Flush and the Ace) 45%
15 Outs (Flush, Ace and Jack) 54%)

I'm risking 4,775 (of 9,300) into a pot of 12,800: Pot odds of 2.8 to 1 (35%)

So, between the fact I still have a small but ok stack here if I call and lose, even the most pessimistic view (that I need the flush to win) gives me just about even pot odds to call.. This is at least a marginal call, and I think its a good call. Let's see how my read went..

As it turns out, I WAS only slightly behind, having 12 outs twice (Nine Flush and three jacks), and I had favorable pot odds to call. However, I didn't improve, and lost the pot.

Looking at his bet, and considering how he played it: This play was a semi bluff.. he didn't have any hand made (and really, didn't make a hand through the river), but it looked like that if *I* had a hand, he would have 9 or 12 outs himself, but he had good expectations because I could have folded in the face of his aggression.

A good hand. Really interested to see what others think of it.

And then, I lose half of my stack on a small pair that had three players against an all in, and I coulda lost the rest of it, as I would have made a set on the river, but lose, set over set. Then this hand occurs, and.. all you can do is shake your head.

I manage a quadrule up on the next hand, where I was forced all in on the small blind, and caught a queen), and then double up on the hand after that where the BB called with any two because it was such a low amount of chips to call, but even then, I'm still below 3K in chips, and at 300-600, my M is 3, so any unopened pot means all in, even with two limpers and 8-2x. One of the limpers calls, and his K9 holds on to bust me in 44th.

About the hand on post 37...(and keep in mind it's been years since I've seriously thought about poker)

I pretty much agree with your take. Seemed like a semi-bluff. On the flop, I might have just checked since I would be on a draw that would beat his possible big pair or set and he was just giving me a free card. Not sure if a bigger bet on the flop would have scared him off, but I generally like to bet between 1/2 the pot and 2/3 of the pot as a continuation bet. Your bet was a tad under half the pot. Tough situation there.

Post 37 hand (AJs vs AQo), I think the call of the all in is trivial with the nut flush draw and your pot odds. You're almost certainly behind but almost certainly have good enough odds to call against his range.

I think the fact that there was over 4k in the pot on the flop, your opponent only had 6.7k left, and the fact that you aren't folding if he raises all in gives you a reason to shove the flop instead of make c-bet.

The fireworks start early. I know this is a bit of a loose call defending the blinds, but a stupid play by a Dead Money player meant I turned the straight. And before, I was looking for the program to make a good read.. I'd say Weenie's fold was pretty good read (Although I think the check on the flop was a bit.. weak.. he was only going to get action if someone made a hand, and while TPTK (like say, an A9) was possible that he could crush with the K's, he had a guaranteed small pot and threw it away to try to trap us.. but as I said, he did get out fairly cheap from it.
