February 24: Incarnate Word at Abilene Christian

Abilene controlled the first half, leading the entire time and going into the locker room with a 43-36 lead. Something happened at halftime, because Incarnate stormed out of the gate and went on a 23-3 run to take a 59-46 lead with 10 minutes left. Abilene regrouped and found themselves back in it after three straight fast break layups and a Rob Nielsen jump shot tied the game with 2:50 left. Then two free throws from Jeeber gave Abilene their first lead of the 2nd half with just :32 left. However, Abilene missed their final three shots of the game, while Incarnate hit 4 free throws to come away with yet another victory in this rivalry.

*Despite my earlier comments, both Incarnate and Abilene are listed as Locks to make the tournament right now. But with respective RPI's of 58 and 52, I'm still not that confident.

*Ginsberg right now leads the nation in Scoring and Rebounding, and is 3rd in Blocks. I don't see how he loses Player of the Year at this point.

*I bet Abilene fans will be really happy to see Ginsberg leave.

Southland Conference Tournament: Championship

It was an evenly matched contest for much of the first half until Abilene went on a late run in the first half to pull ahead 38-33 at halftime. Abilene continued that momentum in the second half, threatening to pull away. Abilene's big men Dennis McKellar and Paul Montalvo were doing a surprisingly good job at frustrating Ginsberg and forcing him into bad shots. The closest Incarnate could get in the second half was when they pulled within 8 at 48-40. But Schaplowsky keyed a 14-2 Abilene run that deflated Incarnate. Abilene coasted to victory for their first postseason title and their first win over Incarnate in their last 5 games.

Ginsberg's struggles continued into this game and his awful start was a big reason Incarnate found itself in a 23-7 hole with 9:21 left in the first half. The first half continued like this until Incarnate entered the locker room at halftime staring at a 38-21 deficit. Incarnate made several runs in the second half, mostly keyed by Lang's strong play, but still found themselves down 64-62 with 13 seconds left. A game winning three by Lang was missed, but Ginsberg grabbed the rebound and put it back to tie the game at the buzzer. Incarnate quickly took a 68-64 lead, but then proceeded to miss four shots and commit two turnovers, while Cal scored 7 straight points to advance.
