Week 14: 2.6-12.84
The top three in the poll--Maryland, Rice, and Missouri, stayed the same. BYU lost at Wyoming and to #5 UTEP, and fell to 7th. The most intrigue exists in the ACC, which houses #1 Maryland, #4 Duke, #7 North Carolina, #16 Wake Forest, and #23 and #24, Virginia and Clemson. They are such a top-flight conference that NC State has fallen out of the rankings because of league play. The Ivy has four teams in, led by Princeton (10th) and Cornell (11th), Yale (13th) and Columbia (22nd). Penn is just outside the rankings. Our heroes have reached new territory this week, moving up to 12th in the rankings. Their previous high was 13th, reached in late February last year. Code:
2.8.84: at Delaware State (12-11) The Hornets are a streaky team, but they have won three of their last five. They have played quality, and lost to it at every turn. They are a young team, fielding four new starters this year. But Gary Mangrum returns from last year. He leads the way with 15.1 points a game, and 4.2 rebounds. Justin Delgado, who was quite a pain in GW's rear last year, has stepped seamlessly into a starter's roll this year, averaging 14.9 points as a scoring guard. That said, the Hornets have been outscored, considerably (by an average of three points), despite their winning record. Delgado hits a three to open things up, and Mangrum gets a steal and a layup. Jack follows a Hulett miss with a dunk, but Delgado answers. Jack responds with a three, and it's 7-5 with 17:30 left. Delgado hits, and Davis finds Hulett to respond. Armbruster is fouled, and hits both free throws to tie it up. Woods gets a steal, and Jack gets fouled. He hits one of two, but they get the rebound, and Hulett hits. Bradley Bearden gets a three-point play, but Jack finds Davis to retake the lead. Davis picks up his second foul, and here comes Sandy...he has played well lately. Armbruster gets his second foul moments later. Hulett misses both free throws, but Jack gets a bucket. Sandy gets a steal and a layup the other way, it's 18-15 with 11:51 left. Mangrum throws down a dunk...the action has been quick so far. Jack with a three! He's got 11-1-1! Mangrum responds! It's 21-19! Jack hits again! Jesse Osborne is fouled by Woods, AND the layup goes! Sandy finishes on the other end. Charlie Marshall scores for the Hornets! Woods is fouled, AND ONE! It's 28-24 with nine minutes left! Jack with his second foul... ...and he comes out. Chance to catch my fingers' breath. He comes back with 7:09 left and GW up, 28-26. Davis gets his third foul, and Armbruster follows with his. Jack hits from the wing. Darrell Francois follows. Jack is fouled by Francois, and he hits both. GW leads, 32-31...Delgado hits. Jack gets fouled by Frank Karp. He hits both. He has 19, and GW leads, 34-33. Jack gets an and-one by Karp again...it's 37-33! Jack has 22! Two more free throws, and the man is on a scoring rampage. Mangrum hits, he has 10. Jack with a steal of Mangrum, he gets fouled by Bearden, and gets the bucket! He now has 27, and GW leads 42-35! Hulett gets two free throws...Porter Ali with a steal, he misses the three, but Jack cleans it up, and is fouled. Two more free throws! Jack finds Grayson right before the half, which ends with GW up, 48-35. Jack scored 29 points in the half. That's incredible. Mangrum led the Hornets with ten, while Delgado had nine. Hulett hits a three to start the scoring in the second half. Jack finds Davis. Jack finds Davis for three...the lead is twenty. I just noticed Hulett has zero fouls. How? Bearden cuts it to 56-40, and Jack gets his third foul. Jack is up to 29-11-4 on the night, and he goes to the line. He hits both, giving GW a 60-40 lead with 11:13 left. Jack has been passing for much of the half, but his teammates are not hitting. Delgado hits a three, but Jack finds Hulett. Jack sits for a moment, with GW clinging to a 62-4 lead. Ali scores...again, not a three. He did miss one in the first half. Hector, who is struggling to be productive with Hulett around, is in. Jack finds Hulett, who has 13. Hulett hits a three off a Hector pass. That's his first postive stat this game. Jack nails a three, making it 73-46. Davis hits...he only has nine today. Jack then finds Davis for a bucket. Charlie Marshall hits a three for State. Jack finds Hector for his first bucket, and Marshall hits another three. Moses Gonzalez hits a three, making it 84-61 in the closing moments. The final is 91-64. Jack went 9-11 in this game, 3-4 from three. He was 13-14 at the line. He had four blocks, and no turnovers to counter his eight assists. That was a brilliant performance. 2.10.84: at Colgate (11-12) The Raiders were 22-13 two years ago, and finished as the runner-up in the NIT. Last year, they reached the NCAA for the first time. They opened this season by losing to Delaware State. That's quite a precipitous fall. The Raiders are mediocre in every sence of the word. They are exactly like Delaware State, only reasonably worse. They do average four players in double-figures, led by Steven Twombly's 13.0 ppg. Grant Salazar averages nearly ten rebounds a game. They have guys who can do jobs. Collectively, they just don't get the job done. For the record, Twombly is fourth all-time on Colgate's scoring list. He will likely not reach the top three. The all-time leading scorer is Matthew Weber, who scored 1937 during his career, which ended in 1964-65. GW has a decided height advantage, which is easily why Colgate wins the tip. Woods with a steal, and Jack gets a dunk and the freebie. Mark Smith is fouled on the other end...he gets both free throws to go. Jack finds Davis for a bucket, and Davis immediately fouls Twombly. Michael Jung scores, and Davis gets his second. In comes Sandy. Honestly, the team seems to play better with Sandy in the game. Probably the steals. Ali hits two threes, and it's 13-6 and a Colgate timeout. Mulvey gets some early time, too. And Grayson. Odd. Fouls, I guess. Jack has a 3-1-3 line, as GW leads 19-9 with 12:40 left. Jack finds Hulett for a basket, and he gets a breather. Woods, Grayson, Mulvey, Sandy and Hulett are in right now. And it's 23-9. This is not a championship five they have out now. Jack comes back with Woods, and Hector in for Hulett. Jack hits immediately. He hits again, and has a 7-2-4 line. Sandy gets a bucket, and the foul...he misses, but Hulett drills a three off a Jack pass. Jack is then fouled, and he hits both. Hulett has 11, Jack has 9-3-5, and it's 34-13 with seven minutes to go. Jack blocks Twombly, then Julian Rogue's three attempt. Armbruster comes back...he's a guy they have to get going. Jack is fouled by Jayson Pitts. He hits both, and is up to eleven points. Jung scores. He has four. Hulett scores...he has 15, and it's 40-19 with 3:16 left, as Jack commits his first foul. He responds by finding Davis for three. Then he finds Hulett. The amount of assists he is finding in the first half is stunning as of late. Maybe his teammates are shooting better. It's 47-22 at the half. Jack finishes 11-4-7. Colgate had 11 turnovers, to just one for GW. GW had 13 assists, to just two for Colgate. If it seems like it's lopsided, it's because it really, really is. Davis gets his third foul early, and Dennis Mitchell hits two free throws. Jack finds Hulett for the first points. Then he finds Davis. Then he finds a fan in the stands. Whatever, that fan was thrilled. Jack gets a three-point play, and it's 56-26. Mark Smith misses a dunk on the other end. Pretty symbolic of this game. Mitchell has had a good second half. He has six, including a steal and a dunk just now. Jack follows with a dunk off a miss, then blocks Jung. Jack finds Sandy, giving him his tenth assist. He just got his tenth rebound, giving him yet another double-double. Jack gets fouled by Julian Rogue, who seems to be going as such on the defensive end. He hits both. Milton Holiday hits a three! Good job, Milt! It's 63-37, as GW calls time, and Jack takes a break. Hulett, Davis and Woods return. Milt gets a steal! And an assist! Great job, Milton! Hulett scores on the other end, making it 67-41 as we reach six minutes. Jack comes back with Armbruster, who has not scored, but has six boards. Jack finds Hector for his first score of the game. The ball-game ends closer than expected, as GW wins, 74-48. Jack went quiet over the last few minutes, but that's okay. He came back to Earth a little, shooting 5-11, and not registering a steal. Sandy had three of them, though. Code:
2.12.84: vs Iona (11-13) The Gaels have an incredible senior, Alphonse Maxwell. He's rated as a G/B, and was Mr. Basketball from Connecticut a few years ago. Unfortunately, he's redshirting after being injured for the entire season. The rest of the roster left in his absence is a open gate of bad defense and an inability to do most things adequately. They are 1-9 against the top 100, their only win coming to 12-13 Rutgers. If it seems like the descriptions of teams has been getting shorter, it's because they are. There isn't a lot to say this week about three teams who are completely interchangable, and complete trainwrecks. They, like Colgate, have four players averaging double-digits. Maynard Norton leads the way with 11.9 points and 5.5 rebounds a game. That's the high in both categories. It's going to be a long night for the Gaels. In a twist of irony, Davis is fouled on the game's first possession. He hits both. Biaggio Callabero hits for Iona, and Jack responds. He finds Davis for the basket, and Hulett finds a bucket. Callabero came to play today, scoring again. Robert Romo (Tony's uncle) hits. Jack gets a steal and a dunk, but Marshall Sperling responds. Callabero gives Jack a three-point play, and it's 13-8 with 13:42 left. Rocco Burns! That's a fantastic name, and unfortunately, how he met his doom in an oven-related mishap. Jack scores again...he's up to 9-2-1. Hector hits his first shot. It would be really nice to get him going. Armbruster, who has been all but invisible lately, finds Davis for a basket. He has yet to score himself. Perhaps the length of the season is bothering him (it shouldn't, high school seasons are this long). Jack suffers his first foul with 8:28 left, and he comes out with GW Up 21-14. Woods gets a tip-in of a Davis miss, then hits two free throws as Jack returns. This has been a pretty non-descript first half. Jack has a 9-3-1 line. Jack gets a steal and a layup on the other end. He heads to the line and hits two more. But Iona is doing a good job of keeping themselves around...it's 29-20. Jack commits his second foul with 4:17 left. He's been pretty sloppy lately with his defensive aggressiveness. On the offensive end, though, he's been dominant. Iona pulls to within six, but Jack finds Hulett for three. Jack gets his third foul with two minutes left, as Callabero draws the charge. Franz Rigel (Seven) comes in and plies his trade, to no avail for the Gaels. The half spirals out of control without Jack, and ends with GW ahead, 36-27. GW has come back to earth a bit on the threes, but Iona hasn't hit one. The Gaels outrebounded GW (20-19), which should never happen, and out-assisted them, 7-5. That should never happen, either. Jack and his 15-5-2 line is back. Burns fouls Woods, and he hits one of two to start the scoring. Jack finds Hulett for three, while Iona has come out doing pretty bad on offense. Sperling hits a free throw to get Iona on the board. Jack finds Davis, while Davis commits his third foul. Hulett, Davis, Jack and Armbruster all have three. Woods has no fouls. Jack gets a board and a score, making it 46-32 with fifteen minutes left. He has a 17-8-4 line. Jack gets his shot blocked by Burns. Sperling draws a charge on Sandy. Iona is not making this eas. Jack finds Davis for three; Norton responds. Kermit Summerville has four rebounds and six assists for the Gaels. Jack scores, and gets a break as Hulett commits foul #4. He comes right back...kind of like a LeBron break. Hector scores to keep pressure on Iona, who is now down 58-41 after Jack's three. Jack is up to 22-10-6 with 8:22 left. Jack hits from the line, and Iona calls time. Jack hits from the basline. He's feeling it right now. Sandy with a steal and a layup on the other end...GW plays a mean 2-3. Jack hits his fourth shot in a row, and it's 66-43. I jinxed him...he missed a shot off a steal. Jack gets fouled by Callabero, and he hits both. The game is effectively over, and Jack comes out with the score, 68-45. Grayson gets called for an illegal screen with 15 seconds left in a 28-point game. How does that happen? The final is 76-48. Jack had a nifty line: 32 points, 14 rebounds, 7 assists, 11-19 from the field, 9-9 from th eline. His blocks have gone down lately, and he managed four turnovers. He did get foul steals, though. Looking at the polls, this is an early projection of the NCAA Tournament's top seeding.
East: 1) Duke 2) Princeton 3) GW 4) Yale South: 1) Maryland 2) UTEP 3) Cornell 4) TCU Midwest: 1) Missouri 2) North Carolina 3) Texas A&M 4) Baylor West: 1) Rice 2) BYU 3) Southern Cal 4) Wake Forest The West would be stacked if that happened. Three of those teams are in the top eight. GW is hampered by the Ivy League rising this year, and the ACC being a dominant presence. Three ACC teams are worthy of #1 spots (it won't happen, the clutter among the top eight teams is too great). A three-seed with one of the weaker Ivies is not a bad consolation, if they can get it. And they have wanted revenge on Duke all year. So, I think they'd take this projection. |

No idea what the next class will look like. Michael King, a O/G sophomore who played in 29 games as a freshman, has played in just six this season. That's alarming, as he'll be the first guard off the bench next year, unless GW picks up some solid talent. I am a little concerned that this may be Jack's best chance at a title, at least until the pros. He's kind of in a funky recruiting cycle. I intend on doing this again with a different region. Week 15: 2.13-19.84
The top five stays intact, though BYU and Duke flip-flopped. There was much moving in the bottom half of the top ten, though, as Southern Cal and UNC both fell out. They were replaced by TCU, Baylor, and George Washington. The Colonials, with the nation's best record at 27-1, are up to tenth. It is their first top ten ranking since they ranked 9th in DC Magazine's "Top Ten Homages to George Washington". Looking at the top ten, there are FOUR SWC teams, two WAC teams, two ACC teams, one Big Eight, and one George Washington. The Ivy, which has been top-flight all season, has cannabalized itself. They still have five teams in the rankings, beginning with Princeton at 11. Code:
If the season were to end today, Jack Dawkins would rank 2nd in scoring, 1st in rebounding, 1st in assists, 4th in steals, and t-34th in blocks. His scoring is the worst in his career, too, at just 26.0 a game. His threes are down, hence the scoring dip. His turnovers are up, too, at 2.1. Gee, this season has been a tremendous failure for him. 2.15.84: at Marshall (16-9) Finally, a challenge, on the surface. The Thundering Herd is considered the last of six independents in the field. They, like many independents, have not played a terrifically difficult schedule. Their RPI (86th) could end up haunting them in March. They are woeful on offense (187th), but play great defense (27th). Usually, this means, to me, that they haven't played a particularly good schedule...especially when they've been outrebounded, All of the evidence suggest they've preyed on weaker teams. They have two solid players, led by point guard Lee Burris (G/B), who averages 17.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.8 assists. Nobody else averages in double figures. The next leading scorer puts up 8.5 a game (Jerry Hazen). The game is on the road, so this may prove more difficult. But, the way GW has been playing as of late... Jerry Reiss wins the jump, and Burris finds Royal Burton for the basket. Jack finds Armbruster...he's going to need a good game. Jerry Hazen hits a three, but Jack responds for his first points. Armbruster gets an offensive board and draws a foul on Reiss to tie the game. Davis takes a three to give GW an 8-7 lead after five inutes. Jack draws a foul, but hits only one of two. Jack finds Davis for the bucket, but JOhn Barlow answers. Davis and Sandy complete a rather remarkable oop, as Sandy throws it in backwards. Jack has an early 3-7-2 line, as he is controlling the glass early on. With 10:20 left, GW leads 15-9. Jack hits two free throws, and Ali scores, as Marshall's early spurt has been nullified. The second group comes in, with Chris Davis. Hmmm. Sandy has been getting a lot of minutes lately. The starters return with no change. Hulett gets fouled and hits both, and John Barlow responds. He was dominant, and Marshall bounced off him repeatedly. Only five turnovers combined in that half. GW holds a 22-16 rebounding edge, while neither team is shooting from outside well. Armbruster scores off a Jack pass, and the foul, to open the half. He then fouls Reiss, who goes 1-2. Marshall fouls an awful lot. Jack hits a three...it's 38-24 with 18:00 left. Jack finds Davis. He has five assists. Jack gets a block and a rebound. Howard gets one to go, making it 42-26. Jack gets his second foul with fifteen minutes left. Then he gets another block and board. Reiss scores. Back to fourteen. GW has gone cold...namely, Jack has. Barlow scores. Ali misses a three. Hazen scores, and the foul...back to ten, and GW calls time with 12:48 left. Davis gets a dunk off a Jack lob. Hazen hits another three. He has 13. Jack finds Hulett for the answer. Jack scores quickly on the inside. He has 20-13-7. Jack gets another block, and another. Barlow with a steal off Sandy, and Howard scores. Jack finds Davis for a response, and Jayson Tidwell scores. Jack responds. Burris hits a three. This game is getting hot. Jack fouls Burris, who hits both. It's 52-44 with six to go. Jack takes a break for a moment., and Marshall is taking advantage, as GW looks helpless. The starters come back, but Hazen cuts it to three. Reiss with a steal, but he misses the dunk. Hazen with the board and the foul, and the lead is one. Hulett gets a three off a Jack pass. Jack has four fouls...he needs to be very careful. Two minutes to go. Jack gets a huge block of a layup by Hazen. 55-51. Hulett to the line, but he misses. Burris drills a three, and it's 55-54. Davis is fouled with :45 left. He misses the front end. Barlow scores! 56-55...Davis is fouled with seven ticks left. He hits the first. The second rims in and out. And back in again. GW 57, Marshall 56. Seven seconds left. Frank Hendershot (of the infamous Hendershot craze of 1983) inbounds to Hazen. He races up the court, takes a three from the wing...and just misses. Sandy gets the rebound, and George Washington survives their scariest game in months, 57-56. This game punctuated with GW has been doing wrong as of late. They have let teams back into games, usually in quick runs, and they fail to get back in sync, once they get out. Jack finished with a 22-14-9 line. His fourth foul (a cheapie) really threw GW out of sync. Davis finished with 15, but Hulett had just nine. Woods went scoreless in just 23 minutes, as the team went small with Sandy for a lot of the game. If this were to happen in, say, the second round of the NCAA, it would be against a better team. And GW may not make their third Sweet Sixteen in a row. This is a major concern for the Colonials. Code:

Week 16: 2.20-26.84
Maryland stayed atop the poll, despite a loss at home to Clemson. Their schedule is brutal...in February, this is their schedule: @ #17 Wake Forest (20-6) (W, 93-87) @ #4 Duke (21-4) (W, 76-69) vs #21 Virginia (19-6) (W, 95-86) vs #20 Clemson (18-8) (L, 76-67) vs #4 Duke (21-4) vs #17 Wake Forest (20-6) @ North Carolina State (17-10) @ #15 North Carolina (21-6) My goodness. It's no wonder that, despite losses, they remain atop the list. Rice stayed at #2, while BYU leapfrogged back to #3. Duke moved up to #4, while Missouri and UTEP both dropped to fifth and six. George Washington, based on their narrow win at Marshall, dropped one spot to #11. Code:
2.20.84: at Seton Hall (16-9) The regular season ends really early (how does a season end on February 20th?) with a trip to the Big East leaders, Seton Hall. This is the kind of prep Hall needs for the final Big East stretch, and kind of a mixed bag for the Colonials. On one hand, they have the best record in the country. On the other hand, they haven't played a terrifically difficult schedule. On the third hand, a win over a potential Big East champion is a feather in the cap. On the fourth hand, it is the Big East, and they aren't any good. On the fifth hand, they have a potential #2 seed wrapped up right now. On the sixth hand, they could somehow wrangle at #1 seed if Seton Hall makes its way into the tournament, due to their RPI rising. So many hands. So little high fives to give. Seton Halls SOS is 196th. Says a lot right there. The Pirates do have a lot of talent, though, and are probably the future of this conference. At least, they go six-deep. Sophomores Roddy Liang Henry Ogburn, as well as junior guard Hubert Clarke, are the future. This year, though, belongs to Frank Barns. He's averaging 21.7 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.8 assists. He is your likely Big East POTY, and he'll create headaches for the defense. Then again, the kid from Detroit was supposed to, too. The Pirates play very, very solid defense. They are 13th in the nation in points allowed, and 18th in oFG%. How much of that is blurred from the Big East, I'm not sure. But they do appear to be a more solid unit. GW will have to play better than last game to achieve victory. Jack sets up Armbruster for the first poitns of the game. Jewel Quach, conventional son of hippies, hits SH's first points. Jack gets a tip-in of his own miss...Sandy is in early again. Interest. Davis was'bnt even in foul trouble. Jack has an early 2-4-1 line, and with thirteen to go, it's 10-9, GW. Seton Hall appears to force ugly out of you. Armbruster scores off a Jack pass. Jack hits a three, making it 15-11. He has 5-7-2 so far. Sandy gets a lot of time because Jack can play the post. He's like a sixth starter for that reason. Just figured it out. Nothing is happening in Jersey...Stephen Paschall hits, and Pascaul Calvo ties it. Paschall gets a steal and a breakaway to give SH a 19-17 lead, but two Davis freebies tie it up. Herbert Doser scores for SH, but Davis hits a three. GW will miss his spurtability. Woods gets a steal and a layup. Jack looks on from the bench as Grayson comes in. Doser hits a three to tie it with 4:44 left. Grayson hits his first shot. Woods gets a steal, but nothing comes of it. Hector now gets a steal...again, another empty turnover. Jack comes into the SG spot. SH is controlling the rebounds so far. This is absurd. The bigs return, and Woods gets two free throws to make it 28-24. Jack gets an and-one, and completes it. 8-8-2 for Jack, and it's 31-24. Hulett gets two free throws. GW's ability to draw constistent fouls has been fantastic lately. Jack gets two more free throws before the half, and GW ends on an 11-0 run to lead 35-24. Jack has 10-8-2 at the break...SH had 11 turnovers to five for GW. Quach hits a three to start. Jack finds Armbruster for GW's first points. Barns, who only has three points, had a shot blocked by Jack. Jack drills a three, and the lead is 40-27. Barns hits a three, but Hulett responds from a Jack pass. Jack then finds Armbruster. Hulett sinks both free throws. SH goes empty, and Quach fouls out. Woods hits both, and it's back to nine. Jack slides to the point opposite Barns. He doesn't even touch it. Jack owns school records in points, rebounds, offensive rebounds, assists, steals and blocks. Nationally, Jack is tied for 19th in scoring. He should reach the top 15 by the end of the second round of the NCAA. He is 46th all-time in assists. He is sixth all-time in free throws made, but not in the top fifty in free throws attempted. He is thirtieth in field goals made, but not in the top 50 in attempts. He is quite the efficient fellow. |

Week 17 and beyond: The rest of the regular season (Part I)
Also the one where I go off on an alternate universe tangent February 27th: Maryland stayed atop the polls, along with Rice and BYU. GW, meanwhile, is at #9, right ahead of Princeton. TCU continues their hard charge up the polls. They are now 8th. UTEP (21-6) fell six spots. March 5: The final regular season poll sees Maryland (26-5) nearly run the table atop the poll, and win the ACC regular season title. Rice (25-3) is #2, while Texas A&M (24-5) takes #3 from BYU (26-5). There were some shakeups...Baylor and TCU fell, while UTEP and Washington climbed into the top ten. George Washington finishes the year ranked tenth overall. Conference Tournaments: Ohio Valley: Eastern Kentucky, the fifth seed, is dancing, having beaten Austin Peay, 72-62. In another dynasty using this setup, the OVC was the kingpin of college basketball. In the greatest game in that dynasty, Penn beat Western Kentucky, then viewed as the height of hoops in the nation, in the 1979 NCAA Championship behind Henry Lavender's magical 40 points. The game went to overtime after a rather amazing back-and-forth battle. Here is a glimpse at that game: :: Penn is the second Ivy League team to reach the NCAA title game; the first was Penn, in 1953-54 (got run over by UCLA's wrecking ball, which nabbed three titles in four years, on a collective record of 133-2. No joke. The only other loss they suffered was in the 1952 Final Four, to eventual champion Dayton. Dayton handed them their loss in 1953, too). They had a great recruiting class a few seasons ago, nabbing the top recruit in the nation, Harry Lavender. They reached the NIT in his freshman year, then the Sweet Sixteen his sophomore season. This season (1978-79), Penn got back to the pinnacle. UCLA wasn't standing in their way, but a nearly formidable opponent was. Current kingpin, 38-1 Western Kentucky. WKU fell in the Elite Eight last year, but made it to the title game two years ago. To many, this is simply the coronation of a great champion. Their only loss was to #2 NC State, and their score disparity was a staggering +26.8 per game. WKU dispatched perennial powerhouse Kansas State, Temple, Maryland, and preseason #1 Southern Cal, to get to the title game. Penn had a magical journey, but faced a Cinderella every round. The three-seed faced 11th-seed St. Joe, then 7th-seed Morehead State. In the Elite Eight, it dispatched WKU's directional brother, Eastern Kentucky. The fifth-seed took out top-seeded NC State in the previous round. Everyone thought the Quakers would perish against North Carolina, who was back for their second straight Final Four. But the Quakers prevailed, 97-87. That set up the final. The line was WKU by 13.5, one of the highest in history. And, for a half, that seemed destinic. Despite WKU fouling at will, they held a nine-point advantage. That happens when you play super-aggressive defense. You foul, and you get turnovers. The Hilltoppers stretched that lead out to 15 early in the second half, but the fouls mounted up. With fourteen minutes left, the Quakers were in the bonus. Behind Lavender and some soft offensive play by the Hilltoppers, the Quakers stormed back to tie it at 51. A 19-2 run made it a 58-53 game, in favor of the Quakers. The Hilltoppers would storm back; neither team would have a lead as big as three the rest of the game. Every time the Quakers would get that cushion, the Hilltoppers would hit a three. They went 12-29 from there for the game. However, the Quakers had intelligence, some savvy headsup play, and a lack of fouls at their side; the Hilltoppers only shot seven freebies all game, while the Quakers shot 28. Three players would eventually foul out for WKU, and two other starters would have four. But, behind sniper-off-the-bench, Ty McNew (16 points, three huge threes), the game went to overtime. There, though, WKU fell apart, and Penn, behind a staggering 40 points by Lavender, won the title, 105-100. That is a title-game record. The stunning thing is, Penn returns nearly everyone next year, including Lavender. So does WKU. The academics bested the country boys by using their aggression against them. Week 17 and Beyond: The rest of the regular season (Part II)
Since I got off-track... Conference Tournaments (cont'd) Southern: #1 Citadel has become a bit of a kingpin in the conference. They trounced everyone before crushing the Ciderellian dreams of #7 VMI, 98-62, to reach the NCAA. The Bulldogs are ranked 25th in the nation, at 26-7, and have a far amount of talent. Their starting line goes G/G, Y/G, G/G, G/B, B/B, with all green pots on the bench. They are starting four seniors, but this is the group that helped the Citadel take the next step, from NIT perennial to feared team nationally. ACC: Maryland swept the regular season and conference tournament titles, beating #2 Duke, 86-73. They beat Wake 81-41 in the semis. This team is not to be trifled with (more trifling). Big East: Seton Hall ended up as the six-seed. That's how jumbled the Big East was (and how bottom-heavy it was). The Pirates did the unthinkable though, going through third-seeded Pitt (who finished the year at 15-14), #7-seed St. John's (11-21), and #8 seed Syracuse, who finished at 11-22. That's right, an 12-21 team could have made the NCAA. Good for Seton Hall, and good for GW, too. ECC: St. Joe's crushed #2 seed Rider, 101-79, to get in. The big wonder now is, what to do with Drexel? They are 23-7 and considered to be in the tournament. Does Seton Hall's win push them out? Or did the Pirates push Boston College out of the tournament? NCAA Selection Show BYU is the #1 seed in the West. Texas A&M, Southern Cal, North Carolina (7-seed?) all end up there. Princeton got #1 in the South. That's awful news for GW. That means they're in the East, where they are a 5-seed, and Maryland is the top seed. They are probably properly seeded, but I bet they'd love to be the six-seed, where Baylor, Clemson, and Columbia all are the high-seeds. The Colonials get 12-seed Mississippi (18-12) in the first round, and the winner of New Mexico (21-7) and Iowa State (18-13) in the second round. After that...unless Maryland or LSU knock off Maryland, the Terrapins await. 1984-85 NCAA Round 1: vs Mississippi (18-12)
The Rebels went 11-7 in league play, but 2-7 against top teams. The SEC is not known for its heightened basketball. The Rebels are a poor rebounding team, even more poor at keeping teams off the boards, and that usually spells doom for GW opponents. They don't do anything particularly well, except drag teams into a fouling fest. That is how it can beat GW, as the Colonials do love to foul. The Rebels hate to score, but they spread it around. Five players average at least nine points. Only two average more than ten, and none more than eleven. One of those players, starting forward Doug Harrison, is out for the season with an injury. But Kirk Rowden and James Kilpatrick, two of the three true veterans of this team, are still ready to lead the team. It should be known that this is the Rebels first postseason game since 1974, when they lost in the Elite Eight. They won six games four years ago, eight games two years ago. This program made a leap this year, and for Rowden, as well as key reserves Damian Shade and Wilbert Lehmann, it is satisfaction to be here. That said, against the 11th-ranked offensive team in the nation, the one who also is the top free throw team in the nation...you better select your fouls wisely. Prediction: George Washington 77, Mississippi 68 Jack scores the first points of the game, but Wilford Davis responds. Then the two come together, as Davis fouls Jack. He hits two free throws. Davis hits a three. Jack hits from the left wing. It's 9-3 quickly. GW's defense is supremely good at getting shot-clock violations. Jack scores again. He is read hot. An offensive board and a huge dunk...Davis gets a layup and a foul by Rowden, and I think that satisfaction is gone. 16-5, five minutes in...Mississippi did not expect this. Hulett steals from Rowden, and gets it to Armbruster, who scores. Martin is tagged for an illegal screen. Davis scores off a Jack pass. Then he fouls Wilford Davis. It's 20-7, and Jack has a 10-3-1 line. Armbruster throws down a dunk off a Jack pass. Jack then commits his first foul. Then Armbruster does, and Missisppi is starting to get into an ugly-fest. Davis gets Woods, and Jack gets it to Hulett. Sandy with a three. It's 30-11 with 9:30 left, and GW looks every bit a championship team. Jack gets a breather...Hector hits two free throws, then makes way for Hulett. Why Hulett gets preference over Hector, when he played so good last year...well, it's not my call. The lead is 35-16 as GW hit a bump in the road. Kilpatrick scores, but Davis responds. Rowden scores, and Jack finds Hulett for three. It's back to 40-20. Wilford Davis hits a three, but Jack responds. Jack should have two more assists, but whatever. Davis beats the trap. It's 44-25 with four minutes to go. Hulett hits a three off of Jack's inbound. The starters have been amazing in this one. Jack hits two free throws. Jack gets a steal...and Hulett with another three. It's 52-25! Jack charges into Rowden, and he comes out with GW up 52-31. That's how the half ends. Jack's line: 14-6-5. Mississippi has 13 turnovers to GW's four. Davis has 12, and Hulett 11, for the Colonials. Kilpatrick opens things with a three. Hulett gets fouled on the other end, and hits one of two. Jack then finds Hulett, while Martin hits a three for Mississippi. Jack picks up his third foul. You know, this is not out of the realm of comeback for the Rebs. Davis hits, and Kilpatrick hits a three. It's 57-40 with 17:40 left. Davis scores off of Hulett. He has 16, while Jack and Hulett have 14 apiece. Jack assists Davis. Ricard Gurule hits a three for the Rebs. With 14:22 left, it's 62-45. Armbruster gets his fourth foul. Woods, who has three, comes back...GW up 62-50. Jack finds Davis for three. Jack's line is 14-8-8, while Davis has 22. Jack scores from the wing, and Jack gets a steal and a breakaway dunk. Suddenly, it's 69-52. Davis hits two free throws, and what seemed uncertain just a minute ago is now 21, as Davis scores again. He has 26. Kilpatrick hits two free throws...with ten minutes left, it's 73-56. Jack scores...he's having a very quiet 20-8-8, given Davis' outburst. Grayson enters, while Hector hits two free throws. Hector gets inside, hits a floater, plus the foul. Right now, the only starters on the floor are Hulett and Woods. It's 84-62 as Hulett scores with just under seven minutes left. Jack comes back with 6:20 left. Jack has a double-double, 20-10-8. Rowden hits a three, while Jack finds Hector. Rowden has 10, Davis 11, and Kilpatrick 14 for the Rebs. Jack finds Hulett for his tenth rebound. There is no rust on this GW team, and none on Jack. Jack scores from the inside. Jim Rome gets in the game! And he hits two free throws! Jack responds...I wonder if never measuring up to Jack Dawkins is what made Jim Rome jaded. The game ends 99-81, after the Rebs went on a small run in the final two minutes. Jack had a nice game, going 9-16 for 24 points, 12 rebounds, and 11 assists. The fouls have got to stop, though. Against these better teams, he will foul out. He never was a fouling player...this is an adjustment. He did have three blocks and three steals. Davis shot 10-14 from the field for his 26. Hulett had a good night with 18, while Sandy scored 11 in 26 minutes. He took just two shots. Code:

I was waiting for the Maryland upset to come, based on the recent recaps. Had more or less expected it to be at the hands of our heroes, but the shock of a 16-over-1 is a little less than I would have normally anticipated.
Would be great to see the Colonials take advantage of this opportunity and break through with a deep run. I don't see any ACC teams in the way unless Clemson is coming out of the bottom half of the East region. |

NCAA Round 2: vs 4) New Mexico
The Lobos are a once-great program that seems back on the rise. They won two NCAA Championships and came close to a third in the sixties, but have not been close since. Their first-round win was their first postseason victory in five years. This Lobos squad is not ready to settle for one win, nor should they. This is, easily, GW's toughest test so far. New Mexico is deep, talented, and experienced. They have a B/B player, and five other G/G or G/B players on their roster. They start a four seniors and a redshirt junior, and bring two others off the bench immediately. Four players have put in at least 103 games in the program. Several others have registered more than sixty. This year, the team is led by guard Brady Ogden, who is scoring 21.1 points a game. Only one other player averages in double-figures, yet they put up 78.5 points a game. This team has many weapons who, while maybe not consistent, do offer their contributions at key times. If GW is to gain victory here, they will simply have to rely on their offense, and make one or two more plays than the Lobos. Booker Templeton is a great eighties name. He's also seven-feet tall, and may be Garry's cousin. He wins the jump. Jack hits his first shot of the game. Armbruster scores, and Jack gets a steal and an assist to Hulett. Ogden scores the Lobos' first points, but Jack responds. It's 8-2 after four minutes. Leif Lopez connects, and then draws a charge from Davis. Jack is not hitting threes this game...but Armbruster is scoring. With 12:47 left, it's 10-4. Jack scores off a Hulett pass. He's got a 6-3-1 line, and now add a foul to that. Lopez scores...neither team is connecting from deep. Armbruster gets a three-point play off of Lopez, and comes out. All subs now except for Woods, while New Mexico has four starters out there. GW has a 17-12 lead when Jack and Armbruster return. Templeton scores, then Cavillo hits a three to tie it. He takes a lead a minute later. Davis is fouled, and he hits both to tie it. Jack gets his second foul. Woods heads to the line, and he makes both. 21-19 GW, six minutes left. Jack gets a steal off Ogden, but Ogden gets it right back. Jack finds Davis for a bucket, then gets a steal off Ogden again, but Davis misses the dunk. Eggleston gets a T...Jack hits both free throws, and Hulett makes one of his. It's 26-21. Porter Ali hits a big three...Templeton scores from the line. Templeton goes on a flurry of points...six in a row gets it to 31-27. Larry Coleman gets the Lobos back to within two. Templeton is fouled, and he ties it with just over a minute left. Jack gets a steal, and finds Hulett for the layup. Jack gets a block of Larry Coleman's dunk. He's been a defensive wizard. Armbruster gets a steal and a layup right before the half, and GW has a 35-31 lead. New Mexico had seven turnovers. GW had seven steals. You tell me how that worked out. GW was decidedly the better team, although both teams went 1-9 from three. DBoth teams came out way cold to start, but Davis finally scores two minutes into the half. Jack has had four or five good looks. Cavillo scores, but Jack responds> Eggleston scores for New Mexico. Jack responds by finding Hulett, and Gaylor Ickes hits a three. Jack scores again. He has a 12-8-4 line. Sandy gets a steal and a dunk. It's 45-40 after Eggleston hits...Jack responds to that. Chris Shaughnessy gets a steal, but Hulett responds to his layup with one of his own. Jack hits from the left side. 51-42, 13 minutes left. Jack finds Hector for a bucket, but Cavillo hits a three. Hulett scores inside. Templeton scores...he has 12. It's 55-47, 10:14 left. Ickes hits a three, and it's 55-50...seems like they're going to play that, "get momentum and give it all back" thing they do. The Lobos got it to within three, but Jack found Hulett. Ogden got a free throw...Jack is not shooting well here. Really poor. He's making up for it, though, in defense and assists. Woods scores inside. With six left, it's 62-53, as Ali hits a three. Armbruster has 9 points and 11 boards. Jack gets a score, and Eggleston responds. Jack is fouled by Templeton. That's his fourth. Jack scores both, giving him 20-11-6. It's 66-57. Hulett scores, and with 3:08 left, it's 68-57. Ogden has just five points. Cavillo (17) leads the Lobos. Templeton fouls out; Armbruster gets the free throws. Jack is fouled, and he hits both. GW will move on, with a 72-60 win that was surprisingly a lot easier than the score indicated. GW outrebounded them by ten, had 10 steals, more assists, more blocks, fewer turnovers...GW shot 11% from three, but it didn't matter. Code:

1983-84 NCAA: Sweet Sixteen vs Indiana (25-6)
The Big Ten champion Hoosiers are stocked with talent. The Big Ten is not. This is not a quality league as we know it; the only team to make the NCAA Championship Game is the 1951-52 Ohio State team, who lost to North Carolina in the title game. Only one other school, Purdue, has reached the Final Four (Purdue has also reached five Elite Eights, more than any other school, but only once did they win their region). This Hoosiers are not all that different from their counterparts. They keep teams off the boards, mainly, by getting into shootouts. They score effectively (50th), but allow points effectively, too (162nd). They are 213th in oFG%, and 209th in adjusted FG%. They are also 15th in the nation in FG% themselves. As far as the roster goes, they are talented. Offensively, they revolve around the two-headed monster of SG Leslie Bendebel (17.9 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 3.0 apg, 1.5 spg), and SF Kermin Shamblin (16.9 ppg, 5.1 rpg). The rest of the team fills in the gaps. Forward Antonio Brooks (9.6 rpg) mans the post with C Geraud Houzet (9.4 ppg, 5.6 rpg), while Donovan Hewitt (8.4 ppg, 4.6 apg) mans the point ably. They have a talented-enough bench, and a *lot* of experience. They start five seniors, four of whom have started since Day 1. Four players have started at least 110 games. Two others have played in 119. This is redemption for Indiana, who had lost in the first round a year ago. They have become a perennial postseason team after going two years without, back in 1976-77. But they have not won a region, and have advanced past this stage only one time. GW is confident it will stay that way. Mortensen hits a three, and Davis responds off a Jack pass. GW is extending possessions like crazy with their offensive rebounding. They hold a 29-16 advantage on the glass at the half, and a 36-25 advantage in the score. Jack finished with a 13-10-3. Mortensen for Indiana, who shot 31% in the half, but 40% from three (GW shot 18%). GW starts with the ball, and Jack scores to open it up. Then he blocks a layup. Armbruster got his third foul though. Jack finds Hulett, then finds Sandy. It's 42-26, and Indiana is getting Jacked right out of this game. He drills a three, and Indiana has to call time. Jack has taken the soul out of Indiana in the first five minutes of this half. Wilmer Scott finally gets Indiana on the board with 13:50 left. Sandy responds...Grayson is in for the first time. And he goes to the line, hitting both. 49-30, 12:49 left. Woodring hits for Indiana...Jack finds Armbruster got a bucket. Danny Gallagher hits a three. Indiana needs to get on a run...we're under ten left. Jack hits, giving him a 20-12-6 line as he comes out, GW up 53-35. GW has a 42-24 advantage on the glass, and only four turnovers. Of course, Ali immediately tosses it into the stands. GW has nine blocks. Jack has the majority of them, I believe. Mortensen hits a three...it's 53-38 with 3:48 left. Cruz hits. Here comes Indiana. Nope, Jack finds Davis, and Davis forces a five-second violation. Sandy hits a jumper, and it's back to 17. Ronald Mosier hits...1:32 left. Jack gets a tie-up, which gives the ball back to GW. He finds Porter for the hoop, and comes out to a standing ovation. Danny Gallagher hits a three to finalize the scoring. GW 59. Indiana 45. This wasn't even a contest. Jack imposed his will on the Hoosiers, and they became small. Jack finished with 20-15-8, along with six blocks. He had eight offensive rebounds, as part of GW's 21 boards off the glass. It is rather amazing to see Jack control a game through defense and getting people involved in the offense. He has carried the team on his shoulders through scoring, though during this stretch, it has been more getting people involved, and shutting down teams on defense. This is a brilliant defensive team, mainly due to him. A big nod, though, has to be given to John Sandy and his increased role. He is a lockdown defender, and his insertion as a sixth starter allows for a more flexible defense. It is very difficult to match up against. Whereas before, I thought, this team will go as far as Jack takes them, I now think it will go as far as their defense carries them. That makes them a major championship contender. 1983-84 NCAA Tournament: Elite Eight vs California (24-9)
Before we get to California, here is what happened on Saturday. West: 1) BYU 81, 11) Long Island 53. Cinderella never found her shoe. Long Island fell behind quickly to the Cougars (30-5), and never got on track. Joshau Binkley scored 17 and registered 11 rebounds for BYU. Garret Watson scored 13 for Long Island, who finishes at 24-9. South: 1) Princeton 98, 6) Penn 74. The Tigers beat Penn twice this year in the regular season in close games. This explosion was a surprise, but the Tigers shot 56% from the floor to crush the Quakers. Princeton (28-6) was led by Travis Cruz' 22, while Charle Snell scored 15 and registered 10 rebounds. The Quakers (23-10) were led by Tony Steinmetz' 21. California went 24-9 this year, but finished 6-8 in the top-heavy PCC. They do own some solid victories, though they only beat Indiana by 3. They did beat Washington, and beat Columbia and Baylor so far in this tournament. The Golden Bears have an effective offense, ranking in the top 20% in nearly every category. They have a do-enough defense, though they are tough to shoot on (29th in the country in oFG%; 18th in aFG%). GW likes to shoot the three, but teams only shoot 30% against the Golden Bears, while shooting 37% themselves. For the Colonials to get to the Final Four, they're going to have to get to the line. Forward Raymond Doby leads a relatively experienced team (several players have put two years in the program), averaging 19.7 points a game this year. Guard Adalberto Rubio averages 11.1 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.2 assists to supplement the attack. They get after the rebounds consistently, so GW will have to battle. The Bears have reached the NCAA Tournament the last three seasons, but have not reached this stage in school history. Both teams are battling for their first-ever regional championship. Jack is fouled by Doby on his first possession...he makes one of two. Toby Harrington hits a three, but Jack responds. Jack scores again from inside. All three shots are inside. Rubio hits a three. Doby scores, and Cal has an 8-5 lead. Jack gets a steal...Cal has three blocks so far. And GW is missing free throws left and right. They are caving, while Cal is destroying them. Hulett and Davis finally get on the board, cutting the deficit to 13-10 with 14 left. Doby scores again...GW is trying threes, but they aren't hitting. This plays into Cal's hands. John Not Bela Fleck hits from the line. Then he hits on a layup, and Rubio gets a steal...Hulett fouls, and the bucket goes. It's 21-10 with 11:00 left. Cal hits a three, but GW gets the next seven points. Jack comes out, and Cal gets it right back out to 12. Jack comes in, gets a steal, and hits from the wing...29-21, and Jack has a 7-5-1 line. Jack finds Sandy for a basket. Here comes GW. Jack shoots from the wing, and drills it...the lead is back to four for Cal. Sandy goes to the line, and he hits both. Jack gets a steal, and a breakaway dunk, and it's tied. Harrington ends the 12-0 run for GW with a three, and Hulett fouls him on another three. He hits two, Hulett has three fouls...Jack get sa jumper to make it 34-31. Jack is running the point...Davis drills a dunk, and it's 34-33 with 1:50 left. Hector comes in and gets a steal. Jack gets to the line, and hits both. GW has a 35-34 lead. Armbruster gets a steal, and his hoop makes it 37-34. Harrington hits a three right before the half, tying the game at 37. Jack has a 15-8-2 line. Sandy has 11 points, while Hulett sulks in foul trouble. Harrington had 15 for Cal. Jack blocks the first shot, and Sandy hits a three off a Davis pass. Cal has a shot-clock violation, and Hulett breaks the press for a layup. Cal has come out very hesitant on offense. Armbruster drills a three. It's 45-37, GW. Hulett hits a three, and Cal leads 48-37. Jack gets a steal, and he gets a layup. Doby ends things with a three, but this is a different game at the moment. Davis gets his third...Hulett has three as well. Cal has seven blocks on the day, but also thirteen turnovers. Thirteen minutes left, it's 50-40, GW. Jack has gone cold...everyone is cold at the moment. He commits his first foul, and Hulett gets his fourth. That's big. Jack keeps missing shots, but you know he'll start hitting again. Jack gets his second foul. The rim is tight on everyone right now...Fleck is fouled by Hector, and he hits one of two. Jack finally responds. With 9:28 left, it's 52-41, GW. Jack's line is 19-14-2. Sandy fouls Harrington, who misses both. He has yet to score this half. Doby drillsa three. It's 52-44 with 6:48 left. Dana Cathey scores, and here comes Cal. Jack is out, so the team needs to defend until he returns. They do, and Woods scores. Davis gets his fourth foul, and Jack comes back. It's 54-48 with 5:44 left. Armbruster with a steal, and a layup. He has a 7-5-3 line. Armbruster then fouls Cathey on a three-point play. GW is getting tight again. Ali comes in and does some poor things. Rubio gets two free throws. It's back to three. Sandy is blocked. Doby hits a three to tie it with 4:04 left. Patterson gets fouled, and he hits both. GW leads 58-56. Armbruster fouls John Parke. He misses both...those are huge. Davis hits from the line. 60-56. Harrington misses a three. Two minutes left, and Cal's going to foul a lot right now. Harrington is up to four fouls. Davis goes one of two from the line. Armbruster goes to the line...he misses the front end. 1:30 left, and it's 61-56, GW. Woods gets to the line. He hits both. 63-56...Jack with a steal, and he goes to the line. He hits both. Up to nine with a minute left. Doby hits a three...Davis goes to the line. He hits one of two...seven-point lead. Fleck misses...Jack gets the rebound. Kelly hits a three, but Hulett hits one of two to ice it... ...George Washington is headed to the Final Four! They overcame a shaky first half with one dominant burst early in the second half. They relied on their defense (outrebounding Cal 43-34) to ride out the final wave. The 67-62 victory sends to the Colonials to their first ladder, and first time cutting down the nets. Cal ends their season at 24-10, while George Washington stands at 33-1. They will get Rice, who won the Midwest with a 72-61 win over Cornell. They are the only non-top seed left in the tournament. NCAA 1983-84 Season: Final Four vs Rice (31-3)
The Final Four, held in East Rutherford, NJ this year, is more home for George Washington than Rice. Of course, Princeton is the de facto home team here. The Rice Owls have been ranked #2 for most of the season, save for a couple of weeks, if that, at #1. They actually have a youthful roster, starting a senior, two juniors, a redshirt freshman, and a true frosh. For four of these players, this is their first season as a starter. That center, Joseph Kujawa, is the Owls' top player, averaging 14.3 points and 9.9 rebounds a game. Freddie Thompson averages 14 points even from the guard spot. They get contributions from several others on the roster, but those are the two big guns on offense. They have the seventh-best defense in the country, though they don't keep teams off the boards. They do force teams into bad shooting days, and GW is one constant bad shooting day. GW has more than a chance, especially if they continue their rebounding prowess (ie keeping the other team from getting the rebound). They are the best blocking team in the nation. Just one more stat to share. The early prediction: Rice 67, GW 63. I think it'll be close throughout, but Rice has been here (five final fours in the last six years). This is their year to finally get to the promised land. GW has a decided height advantage in this game. Woods and Armbruster immediately foul, and Thompson hits a three. Jack misses GW's first shot. Michael Drake finds Jonathan Shriver, but Davis responds with a three off a Jack pass for GW. Davis ties it, and Sandy, who comes in early, gets his first foul. Sandy gets his second, and that's not good news. Thompson hits another three, and it's 10-6 with 16:22 left. Jack draws a charge, then finds Patterson for the basket. Patterson then ties the game, and Hulett gives GW a 12-10 lead with 15:16 left. Jack finds Hulett. He has yet to score himself, until he just now gets a steal and a layup. GW leads 16-10. Jack's got a 2-3-3 line. Michael Mitchell scores Rice's first points in four minutes. Jack scores from the corner, and Kujawa responds. Odd, Hulett is the SF, Jack the off-guard. Rice gets it to 18-16 with 12:04 left. Ali comes in...here comes a three. Drake ties it on Armbruster's second foul, but Hector scores again. He's got six early points. Thompson scores to tie it at 20-20. Michael King is in. Davis hits a three, but Thompson responds. Seems like both teams have their wits about them now. Davis hits another three. He has 11, and Jack finds Ali. 28-23, GW with 9:49 left. Ali drills a three off a Jack pass. It's 31-23...Jack finds Davis. He has a 4-8-6 line, and GW has a 33-23 lead with 7:39 left. Unbelievable! Sandy gets a steal and a dunk...he's back despite two fouls. Rice is shooting 40% right now. Armbruster came back, but got his third foul. Drake hits a three, but Kujawa fouls Jack. He hits both, and Kujawa has two fouls. Sandy gets an offensive rebound, and nails a three. Davis hits another three! They're shooting 55% from three. Unbelievable. Drake gets two free throws, but Jack gets a foul AND THE BUCKET! It's 46-34, and Jack has a 9-9-6 in the first half. Jack scores again...48-34! Hulett scores...they're shooting 67%. They're going to need this lead, because when they come back to earth...Ali heads to the line. He hits both. He has seven points. Kujawa scores, but Hulett drains another three! Grayson with a steal, and he gets it to Hulett for a layup...it's 57-37. Unfreakingreal. Thompson hits a three, but Grayson responds. Mitchell scores...Chris Davis is in! That's how many fouls GW has. Jack blocks a dunk attempt, then finds Hulett for the score. It's 61-42 at the half, and this crowd is in a stunned frenzy. GW just hung 61 on Rice in one half. Jack has an 11-11-7 line, Hulett has 13..after that early deficit, GW was outright dominant. Thompson had 15 for Rice. Shriver is fouled by Hulett to start. He makes one of two...and GW comes out shaky. Shriver hits a jumper, and GW has two turnovers. Rice gets it to 61-47 before Armbruster, freshman idiot, hits a three. Drake finds Mitchell, then finds Kujawa. It's 64-51...and Hulett drains a three. Kim Reynolds scores, and Armbruster is fouled. He hits one of two. 68-53 with 14:54 left. Jack is off to start this half, missing four shots. Thompson scores...Jack misses a three. Drake hits, and the lead is 11, 68-57. Davis beats Rice's press and gets a layup. Armbruster gets his fourth foul. Kujawa hits...Hulett is fouled by Drake, AND THE BUCKET. He hits...he has 19, and it's 73-59. Jack finds Davis...Jack has yet to score this half. Kujawa scores, and Jack responds by finding Davis. They have 41 between them. Jack has an 11-13-9 number. With 11 left, it's 77-62. Grayson gets two fouls in fifteen seconds. Ali fouls James Halcomb. Rice cuts it back to 14. Grayson scores, and Jack has a triple-double. Mitchell scores, and Grayson scores again, with a foul by Kujawa. Thompson scores. It's 82-67. Thompson fouls Davis, who makes one of two. Jack finds Davis for another basket. Then he blocks Reynolds' shot attempt. He has not scored this half, but GW continues to dominate through him. Drake hits a three, and with 6:42 left, it's 85-70. Jack misses again. Maximo Joseph hits two free throws. Hulett misses a three. Chris Davis is back...for five seconds. GW has come back to earth from the heaven of three. Reynolds hits two free throws, and it's 85-74 with four minutes left. Rice is called for a violation. Davis gets inside and gets Thompson's fourth foul, and the bucket. He hits the free throw...it's 87-74, and Davis has 27. Hulett has 19. Halcomb hits...and Jack finally scores, getting a three-point play with 1:33 left. He has a 14-15-11 line. Sandy is fouled...he makes one of two. GW is going to win this game, despite Jack scoring three points in the second half. Unbelievable. The final is 91-79. This is incredible. They're going to the NCAA Championship, and it's because of way more than Jack. In the end, Jack went for 14-17-11, with five blocks, one steal, and one turnover. He shot 5-14, by far his worst shooting day. But his team marches on. Pretty sure he's okay with that trade-off. Davis (27) and Hulett (19) finally showed why they get the bulk of the time at the guard spots, despite bouts of inconsistency. Code:

The Final Four, 1983-84: George Washington will face...
Princeton 74, Brigham Young 62. The Tigers (29-6) continue to play inspired basketball after being written off as an undeserving #1 seed. Five Tigers scored in double-figures, led by Travis Cruz' 13. Princeton used 22 BYU fouls to take 20 free throws, compared to just 12 for BYU. Joshua Binkley scored 18 for BYU (30-6), who shot badly (39%), and never found a rhythm against Princeton's defense. 1983-84 NCAA Championship vs Princeton (30-6)
The Princeton Tigers won the NCAA championship four years ago as only the second undefeated champion in history (the first was the 36-0 UNC Tar Heels, back in 1958-59). Rice lost that title game, 84-58...it would have been interesting if they got back to face each other. But nevermind that. There were lofty expectations for the class that came out of that national title. Four years later, that class has nearly realized those expectations. After three straight early-round losses for the Tigers, they have returned, perhaps against odds, to the national title game. Overall, this is their fifth Final Four, and third NCAA championship game. They lost in the 1976-77 title game. This is a deep, extremely experienced group. Six players have played at least 98 games. Three have played at least 130. Two 100+ game starters. SF Blake Quillen is a mini-Jack, averaging 15.9 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 4.4 assists, along with a steal a game. Travis Cruz, the new starter this year, has averaged 14.2 points, and has been the leading scorer for Princeton this postseason. Power forward Charlie Snell averages 9.4 points and 9.0 rebounds a game. Princeton is a top-twenty scoring team in a deep conference. They went 15-5 in games against the RPI top 50, and 10-1 against 51-100. They have a championship resume. They shoot very well...they aren't a great defensive team, but they do well enough. Their 12.2 margin of victory is eighth in the nation. GW's powerful defense will definitely be tested in this game. Kermit Lee wins the tip, and Stephen Williams finds Cruz. Jack gets to the line and scores both, so we're tied at 2-2. Hulett fouls Williams, who hits both. Jack beats the press and gets it to Hulett, who hits one of two. If GW is going to rely on Hulett...he beats the press and gets a layup, so it's 6-5, Princeton. Benton Gober comes in; that's the perfect name for a sidekick in an 80s sitcom. Jack with a steal...Gober commits a foul. With five minutes gone, it's 8-5. Cruz hits a three. Charlie Snell scores, and is fouled. It's 14-5 Princeton. Quillen finds Cruz. Davis gets a bucket, and the foul...16-8 with 12:32 left. Princeton responds. Davis gets hurt. Jack with a steal and a layup. 18-12 Tigers. Jack hits Sandy for three...18-15. Jack has a 4-1-1 line. Porter Ali comes in and beats the press, and throws it down. Sandy heads to the line, and hits two, and GW has a 19-18 lead with 9:45 left. Quillen responds...Dennis Davis blocks Jack's layup. Princeton is totally controlling the boards (16-5). So many second chances...they take a 25-19 lead, while GW can't get multiple tries on their end. Hulett goes one of two from the line. Williams drills a three, and it's 28-20. Sandy scores, and Woods draws a charge on Cruz. Jack throws one home off a Hulett miss. Cruz hits two free throws...30-24 with 5:11 left. Gober hits a jumper. Williams hits two free throws. Jack goes to the line, and hits two. He's up to 8-2-1, but Princeton is up 34-26. Jack finds Hulett for a bucket. DePrieto responds. Ali is fouled, and he hits both...Princeton has the response for now. Jack gets a steal, and Sandy scores. Back to four. GW is getting confidence. Armbruster hits one of two free throws, but Williams finds Quillen. Hector hits two free throws. 38-35. Cruz hits both free throws he takes. Hector gets back to the line...he goes one of two. Dennis Davis hits...Armbruster responds. Gerald Alarcon finds Cruz, but Jack finds Hulett. Dennis Davis hits two free throws to end the half...Princeton is up 46-40. They have a 22-13 rebounding edge, but nine turnovers to just four for GW. Quillen had 10 for the Tigers. Jack had an 8-3-3 line, while Sandy had nine, and Hulett eight. Chris Davis is in. This is bad. Hulett gets the tip. Jack comes out. Hmmm....Davis hits a three to put GW up 52-50?!!?!?! What?! Then he's fouled by Quillen, and Jack comes back. Quillen gets fouled by Grayson, and ties the game. Hector with a steal...Jack is fouled, he hits both. 54-52 lead. Jack hits from the top of the key. Then he finds Woods. It's 58-54, GW, with 12:53 left. Patterson hits! He's hitting in a huge way! Jack finds Hector for another score. He has ten and is reminding everyone of last year. Jack finds Hulett for three! 65-54! Joe Mattox scores...Jack responds. He's up to 16-5-6, and he gets a steal and dunk the other way. GW is on a huge run right now. Jack with the bucket, and the foul! Michael King got the assist! Marty Reed is pushing all the buttons right now! Jack hits two more free throws, and Princeton gets a T! Jack hits those, and Chris Davis gets two free throws. It's 76-64, but Princeton is far from done. Jack with a tip of a Woods miss...he has 25, and it's 78-66 with nine minutes left. Quillen scores. Cruz has 19, Quillen 12. Hulett hits a three! He has 16! Lee scores on the other end, those are his first points. Snell gets a rebound, but Woods ties him up immediately. Davis and King is the backcourt again. They are stealing time with this backcourt...they've done is a few times. Jack scores off a King pass. Jack draws a charge off Quillen. Davis with two more free throws...he has seven! FOur minutes left...85-70, George Washington. What an unbelievable full team effort. Hulett goes to the line as Williams fouls out. He hits both. Jack comes out. Alacorn hits two free throws. Hulett misses, and here comes Princeton. Quillen gets a layup. 1:51 left, 87-74. Ali hits, and this is over. This game is over. Quillen hits a three...89-77 in the final minute. Armbruster hits a free throw, and DePrieto hits a three at the buzzer... ...and George Washington knocks off Princeton, 90-80. The George Washington Colonials. YOUR 1983-84 NCAA Men's Basketball Champions! GW dominated the boards, and only had two turnovers in the second half. Princeton got cold, fouled a lot, and committed 17 turnovers for the game. Jack, naturally, was named Player of the Game, for his 27-7-7 effort. But let's go through this. Dwight Davis was hurt seven minutes in. John Sandy got into foul trouble. So, in a national championship game, Chris Davis played seven minutes, and scored seven points. Michael King played just two minutes, but had two assists. Hector, who was huge last season but a forgotten man this year, played 18 minutes, and scored ten points. Hulett, who now had to be the other man in the offense, a role he always wanted, stepped up. He went 6-11 from the field, 2-3 from 3, and had 18 points and eight rebounds. Brian Armbruster, who went invisible late this season, scored eight points. Bruce Woods scored just two points, but had five big rebounds. And then there was Jack. 9-17 from the field, 9-9 from the line. Just seven rebounds, four offensive. Seven assists, no turnovers. Three blocks, SIX steals. All of those were huge. For Princeton, this has to be heartache. The GW defense clamped down in the second half. Travis Cruz finished with 19 points on 5-9 shooting, 8-8 from the line. Quillen had 17-7-5. The 1983-84 George Washington Colonials
Michael King, PG (So): Appeared in just eight games, but still managed more minutes than either Chris Davis or Rob Mulvey. Playing time dipped considerably as Richie Hulett and Dwight Davis stayed healthy until the final game. Played two minutes in the NCAA championship, but had two key assists to help jumpstart GW's run that led to the victory. Code:
Chris Davis, SG (Jr*): Davis was known last year as the unhappy walk-on. Oddly enough, he played more last year than this. However, it was his seven minutes in the NCAA championship, where he scored seven points, that fans will always remember about him, no matter what happens next year. He has already made his biggest mark on the program. It's quite possible George Washington doesn't win without him after they spent the last two seasons doing just that. Code:
Robert Mulvey, SF (Sr): Mulvey walked-on at Virginia Tech as the 918th overall recruit. He transferred after his freshman year, and was a bit player for GW. He was a usual reserve last season, averaging 8.5 minutes, 2.3 points, and 1.6 rebounds a game. He saw just one minute in the NCAA title game. Code:
Porter Ali, SF (Jr*): Ali has been a bit reserve throughout his career, something that won't change next season. You know he's going to shoot when he's in, and he has a very solid jumpshot...but not a three. And he shot 49 of his 92 shots from beyond the arc. He played well in the NCAA title game, but don't expect his role to increase. Code:
Glenn Grayson, C (Fr*): Grayson started two games this year, but slowly disappeared in the second half of the season, as John Sandy's role expanded, and Jack spent more time at the 4. He has a bright future next year, as Armbruster should take over at the C spot. He had spurts of solid play this year, and has a lot of growth ahead of him. Code:

Hector Patterson, PG (So): The 5'9 (in shoes) guard didn't fall out of favor. His minutes decreased because Hulett and Davis were injured. When Davis got hurt early in the title game, Hector ended up playing eighteen minutes. He registered ten huge points, all in the second half. He needs to improve drastically on the three (4-33 this season), but chalk that up to intermittent minutes. He will be a sixth man next season.

Brian Armbruster, PF (Fr): The biggest (only) addition to the team, Armbruster played the second-most minutes on the team this season. He has a love of the three that either needs to be improved upon or discarded, but he is a very capable rebounder and inside scorer. He should be much better next year, and may be Jack's right-hand man as the new center. Code:
Richie Hulett, PG (Jr): Hulett is hot-headed, the source of a few technical fouls this year. He is also not a particularly good outside shooter (30% from 3), and could work on is all-around game (he is a pretty lousy defender). But he comes through in the clutch, as evidenced by his play in the Final Four. He won't be able to lean on Davis next season, or John Sandy, for that matter. So he better show up to practice ready to be more of a leader. Code:
Bruce Woods, C (S0): Woods was dependable, though never spectacular. He lost playing time as Sandy gained it this season, and the team became more of a small, defensive machine. He was a plodding brick wall of a man who was good for some solid defense, and a few points a game. He made valuable contributions that rarely went into the stat sheet. He'll stay a starter, but will play limited minutes as the game goes on. Code:
John Sandy, SG (Sr): Sandy became the sixth starter this year. He didn't start a single game, but he played starter minutes. He was usually in the game in the first 2-3 minutes, as GW went to a more varied linep to put Jack wherever he needed to go. Sandy's defense was lockdown, and that may be what is most missed next year. Nobody can do what he did, getting steals and layups seemingly at will. He was also Mr. Dependable at the line, shooting 82% this season, and improving every season. He was never counted upon for offense, but he gave it, even more so late in the season. He played exactly 2000 minutes in his career, 910 this season. If he had played 910 minutes on many teams, they probably wouldn't have won. But, on a team where all they needed was one thing out of him, he became indispensable. Code:
Dwight Davis, SG (Sr): The former Mr. Basketball of Delaware scored 27 in GW's Final Four win over Rice, and it seemed like he was primed for another hot run in the title game. But he tore a ligament only seven minutes in, a bittersweet finale for Jack's right-hand man. Davis steadily improved as a shooter over his career, and while he was never much of a distributor, he could facilitate every so often. He averaged 14.3 points this year, and 11.3 for his career, scoring 1350 points. He was underrated, and often stepped up when was needed. He will leave a vacuum much like Sandy will, but on the other end. Code:

Jack Dawkins, SF (Jr): What can we said? Perhaps we'll wait for next season. His scoring was down, but his assists way up. His rebounding was astounding. He has 2,613 points for his career, and should burst the scoring record within the first ten games next season. He has 1167 rebounds, and should be the all-time leader by midseason or so. He has 723 assists...he needs 299 to get to #1. He had 306 this year. So, it's possible. His story isn't done, of course. So, his tale will be told next year.

Jack was named National Player of the Year, of course, his third such win. Marty Reed was denied National Coach of the Year, which is preposterous. But he was Independent Coach of the Year. His career record is 63-4. Better enjoy his final year of the good life. Code:

Coaching Changes Marty Reed took the temperature just right, and bolted for Murray State. On second thought...maybe he didn't. Murray State is not a step up. GW ended up hiring his 31-year-old recruiting coordinator, Charlie Radcliff. He is definitely 31, young, not very experienced in anything. Radcliff did, however, hire defensive guru Rolf Edwards as his lead assistant. That is huge. Reed had gotten better during his time at GW, but he was never going to be a coaching wizard. Radcliff is not good, by any stretch...but he should do okay for the long haul. Three coaching changes during Jack's tenure. Never, ever would have expected that. I would have expected a coach to latch onto his coattails. But two, Arlie Jennings and Marty Reed, used what they felt were peak times with Jack to bolt. The Freshman Recap North Carolina snagged three five-star and three four-star recruits to take this year's recruiting title. The big haul for UNC was C Lauren Baillargeon, a 6'8 center from Alabama. Baylor signed the top two players in the country, as well as #6. That would make them the top class in the country, to me. George Washington did okay, signing three players that could be solid down the road. Denny Perez was the big haul, the #106 recruit in the nation. He's a 6'11 center from Alexandria. Guard Kenny Frazier is Dwight Davis revisited, and Charlie Muncy is a JuCo who can come off the bench. Overall, this is a lackluster class, though it ranked 73rd in the nation. On the surface, this is the best roster Jack has had. Armbruster has blossomed into the best player Jack has played with, while Hulett is a more-than-competent lead guard. Whether or not he has a more-than-competent brain, that's up for debate. Woods is a perfectly suitable post player, and Kenny Frazier has a decent handle, a streaky jumper, and is a wild card. The bench is markedly better than the past; Hector looks like he could be a starter for many teams. King, Grayson, and Perez give solid size, something many teams don't have. And Ali...well, he's Ali. Boutwell probably won't contribute this year, and Davis will lose seconds to Boutwell. That's a shame. Code:
On offense, Armbruster has gotten better inside, and Woods is okay. Hulett has gotten a better jumper. Frazier already has a serviceable jump shot. Nobody is really a good passer...Hector is the second-best passer after Jack. King can handle but not pass. They will get their fair share of rebounds on the offensive end, like last year. From the line, they will struggle. King is a very good free throw shooter, but how many chances will he get? Code:
On defense, Woods will be solid in the post, but Armbruster is okay at best. In fact, this team will struggle to guard people anywhere. They don't have a Sandy that can cover like Jack can. Only Armbruster and Jack are solid rebounders. This will be a worse team than last year, unless they grow throughout the year. Code:
Preseason Poll Duke starts the year atop the poll, which is a surprise. Rice, Penn, Kansas and Maryland round out the top five. George Washington, for all of their holes, have Jack. And so, for the first time in Jack's career, the Colonials start the year ranked, at #21. Code:
Team Schedule: The typical Independent scheduel. Though they have a game at #1 Duke in February. That will be a great pull for NBA scouts, as many will be there to see him against the best team in the country (as of this minute). 11.17.84: vs Ohio State (Legends Invitational)
The people at the Legends had some great forethought when they signed GW up two years ago. They now get the defending national champions in a tournament that, historically, hasn't had much clout. The Colonials lead things off with Ohio State, a team that has never had sustained success in college basketball. They did reach the 1951-52 NCAA championship game, but lost to North Carolina's first title team, 66-60. Their last postseason experience was back in 1978-79, when they lost in the first round of the NCAA. They have been putrid every since, and will probably do so once again. The Buckeyes return one starter, and only five guys who have ever played a college basketball game. In fact, they only have two guys who have averaged more than 11.5 minutes a game in their career. Wilber Hiller started 12 games last year, but he is not of starter quality. He has 2.9 ppg for his career, which makes him their top returning scorer. Forward Carrol Simmons is their best overall player, and their most experienced. He has put 88 games into the program. Freshman guards Rusty Brandon and Troy Jahnke are about to get a quick education in college hoops. Jimmy Bradford scores to open things for Ohio State. Jack misses his first shot of the year, and Ohio State is off and fouling. Jack gets swiped, and Ohio State scores on the other end. Jack hits his next shot, but OSU responds. Jack scores again...and Kenny Frazier scores his first points. Jack gets fouled by Bradford, and the score is tied. Taylor Murray hits a three. Elias Bautista scores. It's 11-6. It's 41-29 with five minutes left. Jack scores again...he has 16-4-1. Assists will be hard to come by this season. Grayson is fouled, and he gets one of two. Hulett commits his third foul, and here's Boutwell. Hector scores...David Echevarria is in for GW, too..this second team is getting crushed. Ali scores, but it's 49-36. Jack comes back. Brandon hits a three, and the lead is back to sixteen. Armbruster is fouled...he misses both free throws. Jack gets a steal, and he hits a three. GW has sixteen fouls this half. The score is 56-39, and that was painful. Jack has 19-5-1. Armbruster scores to open things, then gets fouled by Kirk Paschal. Jack finds Armbruster for the score. He has ten. Jack gets a steal and a feed to Grayson. Hulett gets foul #4. It's 59-45. Hector hits a three. OSU is coming back to earth a bit. Armbruster gets the bucket, and the foul. It's 59-51, and Armbruster has thirteen. Denny Perez draws a charge. Jack follows a Frazier miss with a dunk. Armbruster gets a dunk. It's down to four. Jack gets a steal, and a dunk. He has 23-8-3, and it's 59-57. Jahnke hits one of two free throws. Hector hits, cutting the deficit to just one. Armbruster gives GW a 61-60 lead. Jack is starting to assert himself on defense. Bautista has three fouls now. There are fouls everywhere. This is ugly. OSU is completely cold. And now, so is GW. Boutwell and Perez are in. This is where OSU grabbed control before. Hector hits a three...he has ten. Armbruster has a double-double (17-11)...Hector hits another three, and GW leads 69-61. They were down what, 17 at the half? So far, it's 30-5 this half, GW's favor. Jack comes back with a 23-9-3 line, and he hits two free throws immediately. King goes to the line...he misses both. Jack's up to a double-double. Ali scores, and GW is comfortably in front now, given how OSU is shooting. This is the Ohio State team that was expected. Guess it took GW a half to warm up. Jack heads to the line. He hits both. 77-63 with 4:33 left. Hulett fouls out. This is very bad news, if Hulett is going to be so crazy on fouls like this. Frazier has four, Woods has four. Jack hits a three...he has thirty points, and it's 80-64. Woods fouls out. Frazier is fouled...he hits one of two. Talk about nervousness...he has only four points, and has jacked up shots everywhere. GW's free throw shooting is atocious. OSU gets it back to 81-70. Seems like they've woken up. A steal and a layup for Brandon, who fouls out immediately after. Jack hits two more free throws. Frazier fouls out. Jack runs out the clock, and that's a rather bad 83-74 win for GW. Armbruster's 17-17 line was very impressive. Jack had four turnovers, four steals, and just three assists. That is bad news for this team. They can't beat better teams if they play this way. Wake dismantled West Chester, 93-65, yesterday. They have a veteran group, returning four starters from last season's NCAA team. They put four players in double figures, and Matt McCoy, who is their best player, was not one of them. They are a deep team, littered with pro talent all over the place. Tall order for GW, indeed...especially with yesterday's performance. Wake is not tall. So GW has that going for them. Armbruster hits a three after a long possession that includes several offensive boards. Hulett fouls Dane Pack on a dunk attempt, and Wake has an early 5-3 lead. Jack finds Kenny, who scores and gets fouled. He misses the free throw. Ben Shanklin scores inside. Jack is fouled by Pack, and gets the bucket. He hits, and it's 8-7. Woods with a steal and a breakaway dunk. Jack finds Kenny, and with four minutes gone, it's 12-7. Armbruster fouls Shanklin, who gets a three-point play. McCoy scores to tie it. Woods scores off a Kenny pass. He's getting more confident. Woods with a dunk, but SHanklin responds. McCoy ties it back up. Jack has only one take so far. Jim Mitchell scores, but Jack gets a three-point play to retake the lead. He has an early 6-1-3 line, after he finds Armbruster. Hector comes in and gets a steal, but Hulett tosses it away. McCoy scores. 21-20, GW. Grayson scores, but McCoy responds. He has eight. Hulett gets his second foul. Jack hits a three from the corner...26-22 GW. Frazier with a steal and a layup. McCoy responsd to that. Hector scores from inside, as GW tries to win minutes without Jack. It's 30-24 with 8:40 left. Jack comes in and scores...he has 11. McCoy has 12 as he responds. Then McCoy fouls and comes out. It's 33-26, GW, with six minutes left. Henry Hannah scores. Hulett is fouled...he hits both free throws. GW looks like a different team, one more composed. Jack tips in a Hulett miss. Frazier fouls Hannah, who gets one of two. Hulett gets his third foul, charging into McCoy. Patterson is going to get a lot of run this year, if Hulett plays like this. Grayson scores, and it's 39-30 with under three to go. McCoy hits two free throws...Jack responds to that. Both have 15. McCoy finds Duane Saunders for three. Ali is ouled, but he misses both free throws. McCoy scores, and the lead is cut to 41-37. Jack gets fouled by Pack, gets the bucket, and the free throw...then he comes out, as he appears shaken up. Shanklin hits. Hector misses right before the half, and GW leads, 44-39, in an exciting half. Jack is back...he has an 18-3-3 line. Woods starts off with a dunk off a Frazier miss. Frazier gets his third foul. Jack charges into Shanklin, and Hannah hits a three. Armbruster responds to that. He was quiet in the first half. Pack finds Shanklin. Jack hits from the corner. It's 51-46, GW. Woods draws a charge on Hannah. Three players have three fouls for Wake. McCoy scores, but Jack responds. That is a great individual matchup of two outstanding players. Wake is getting help though. Jack gets a steal...and Frazier hits a jumper. Three players have eight for GW. Hannah has 12 to supplement McCoy's 19. Jack finds Frazier again. Armbruster commits his third foul. It's 57-52 with 14:12 left. Jack scores from the wing. Woods has turned into a much better, more controlled defender this year. Jack's up to a 24-5-5 line, but GW has controlled the boards. Willie Crotty hits his first shot. Armbruster scores, and GW leads 61-54. McCoy finds Crotty. Jack gets fouled by Saunders. He misses his first free throw of the year. David Washington comes in and gets a layup. It's 62-58 as GW tries to steal minutes with no starter on the floor. Washington hits a three, and it's 62-61. Armbruster comes back and draws a charge on Pack. GW goes empty...but so does Wake. Hulett scores...he only has four, and he commits hsi fourth foul. McCoy hits two free throws. 64-63 GW, 6:37 left. McCoy scores...he has 25, and Wake has a 65-64 lead. Jack responds off a Hector pass! Mitchell gets fouled by Woods, but he misses both. Jack hits again off a Hector pass! He has 29! Hector fouls Washington, who hits both. Back to one, and Jack repays Hector by finding him. Ali hits a three off a Jack pass. It's 73-67...Jack has a 29-8-7 line. Jack hits a three! The lead is nine! GW on and 8-0 run! 3:15 to go, and Washington finds Mitchell. Jack mysteriously comes out, but Hulett gets an and-one! Jack comes back witha 79-69 lead. Jack gets the board off a missed free throw...Hulett hits two more free throws. He's been clutch in the last two minutes. Offensive rebounds won this game in the final minutes for GW, as they will win this game, 82-74. That's a fantastic victory, one I didn't think they'd get. McCoy played inspired ball for Wake, but this is a quality victory for the Colonials. Code:

11.19.84: Duke is still ranked atop the poll, which had just a little shakeup. Missouri (6), Princeton (7), Cornell (9), and Clemson (11) took the furthest tumbles down the poll. GW had the biggest rise, jumping from 21st to 14th (Texas A&M also moved up seven spots, as did Columbia). That is respect for the Wake victory, which was a complete one.
11.26.84: The top four stays the same. Penn, meanwhile, fell from fifth to out of the poll after two losses, to BYU and to Baylor. Both are ranked in the top five. That's a raw deal, from where I sit. GW, meanwhile, slides up two spots to #12, despite not playing. Code:
11.27.84: vs Buffalo (2-1) The Bulls have been outscored, despite the winning record. That's a red flag. They are mildly experienced, with three starters returned from last year's 10-19 team, a new head coach (Elmer Rhine), and an injury to one of their key starters (SF Harold Cross). They spread the offense among 5-6 different players, all of which get around 24-25 minutes of playing time. So the loss of Cross is a big one. Booker Not Brooke Shields is Cross' replacement, and he is not dealing with fan chants well. C Hoyt Everside, and SG Demetrius Schwarts, are the key targets for this team. As a team, they shoot very poorly (37% through three games). Expect GW to cruise. Allen Pope scores first for either team. Hulett responds off Kenny's pass, and Pope hits a three. Pope gets a steal, but Eversole gets heart. Then Pope charges, and gets his second foul. Schwartz picks Jack and gets a three. Then Jack turns it over again. Perhaps he has yet to wake. Normand Pinero scores to open things. Ian Silva adds a three. Jack finds Hulett for GW's opening points. Eversole scores, but Kenny responds with a dunk. Jack finds Hulett again. Jack has had his first two shots blocked...he gets a tip-in for his first points. Then he gets an early break. Buffalo races out to a 16-10 lead with 10:21 left. Jack scores...he has half of GW's points so far. GW has eight turnovers, which is absurd. Jack gets a dunk, and Grayson gets a three-point play. Booker Shields scores, despite the fan chants. Hulett responds, and Hector scores two free throws to make it a one-point game. Jack commits his second foul. He has a 8-5-2 line. Armbruster gives GW its first lead, at 25-24. Jack finds Hulett, who scores again. And..Jack has his third foul. Oy. Woods scores. Hulett hits a three...he has 15 this half. Kenny hits a three. It's 37-31. The half ends 40-35...GW righted its ship. Jack has an 8-6-3 line...and he gets his fourth assist to make it 42-35. Jack finds Woods for a bucket. Woods with a steal and a layup. It's 46-35, and Buffalo has to call time. Silva hits a three. Hulett is fouled on a three. He hits all three, giving him 20. Armbruster hits a three. Pope gets a dunk, making it 52-40. Buffalo cuts it to ten...Jack takes his first shot, but misses. Woods gets the board, and gets fouled with the bucket. Jack hits from inside. He has a 10-9-5 line. Silva has 20 for Buffalo, for the record. Woods has 10-6 for GW. It's 58-42 with 11:38 left. Hetrick hits a three, cutting it to 59-47. Woods gets another tip...61-47. Jack drills a three. Hetrick hits again. Jack scores from inside. He's at 15-10-5. Grayson scores...it's 68-53. Woods scores again, and the foul, and the hoop. HE has 15. Great game for Woods! It's 73-53 after Ali gets a steal and a dunk, and GW has finally made this a blowout. Jack finds Ali. Then he finds Hector. Jack hits a bucket, gets fouled, and hits the free throw. He comes out with GW up 80-55. The final is 91-61. It was a very lackluster thirty-point game. Jack had one of his worst games as a Colonial. And he still had 18-12-7. Code:

The Rams have bottomed out, not even two years after winning the NIT championship. They are 0-3, and have been outscored by an average of 17.3 points a game. They have played Clemson, who is ranked, but the other two teams are not of any quality. They did return three starters from last year, but none of them are players you'd build a program around. The forwards, Chris Alcala (11.7 ppg, 4.3 rpg) and Kenny Hartwell (10.3 ppg, 3.7 rpg) are the main scoring focus. This team rebounds poorly, and does not play defense. GW should finally get on track here. VCU comes out in a press. Jack beats it easly and finds Kenny. VCU's Kenny (Hartwell) hits a three, and VCU has a 3-2 lead. Armbruster gets the lead back on a jumper, but Alcala responds. Jack drills a three to tie it at 7, but Andrew Burkey throws up a wild three that goes in. Milton hits a three, and VCU is up, 13-7. Jack commits his first foul. GW has gone cold, and VCU is hot. Apparently, GW is prone to letting teams go on shooting streaks against them. Do that against a good team, and they're screwed. Milton has ten for VCU still. They didn't take points away from him or anything. Jack gets a lob on an inbound from Hulett...he scores, and gets fouled. Woods throws down a big dunk. This game is just running out now...Milton scores to open things for VCU, at the 16:25 mark. Hartwell hits a three. VCU is fouling in their press. Jack hits from the corner, but Alcala responds. Jack hits from the baseline...he has 28-10-1. He gets fouled, and hits both. 68-40 GW with 13:26 left. Hulett gets his first foul with 13:09 left. That's nuts. Armbruster fouls Tony Waring, who took the charge on Hulett. Jack finds Kenny for a basket. Only his second assist. Jack gets to the line, and hits both. It's 72-43...Alcala gets fouled by Woods, with the bucket. Milford Akers scores! Hulett hits two free throws for his first points of the half. Hector beats the press and gets a layup...Hartwell dribbles through every square inch of the offensive end and scores. Jack finds Perez, and Kenny gets a steal and a layup. It's 82-49, and it's all subs right now. Ali drills a three...Ferdinand Boutwell, this year's Chris Davis (with Davis still on the team), is in the game. History Update Jack has 2727 points, which is fourth all-time. He will pass Gordon Showalter (Wake Forest '70) in eleven points. He is a few games away from the top two. He is t-16th in total rebounds, and should move up to 12th after next game. He is tied for fifteenth in rebounds, but that record will be tougher to break, as assists are slower in coming now. Code:

12.1.84 Poll
Duke maintained the top spot in the poll, and maintain a large lead over the new #2, Maryland. The old #2, Kansas, fell to #24 Bradley. #3 BYU and #5 UTEP received one first-place vote each. George Washington moved up to #10, which is really weird seeing still. I'm used to them not getting into the poll until late in the year. They likely won't be challenged until the Duke game. How great would it be if both were undefeated going into that matchup? It's on February 7th, so it's over two months away...but hey, a man can dream... Code:
12.2.84: vs Drexel (4-1) The Dragons haven't played anyone tough, but they look the part. GW is fortunate that they are likely without sophomore guard Marquis Matos, who is out for two months with an injury. He is their leading scorer, at 16.8 ppg. It is unknown who will replace him, though it's like David Bischoff is the guy. He's averaged 7.8 points in just 11.8 minutes so far. That looks quite impressive...he also averages 2.8 rebounds. Who knows how that will prorate over a full game of action. The team still has 7'1 forward Dennis Hungerford, who is averaging 10.6 points and 8.2 rebounds a game. Last year's 24-9, NCAA team has largely gone, replaced by a lot of freshman. There are two in the starting lineup, and another four coming off the bench. The five seniors that remain will have to see them through. (There are no juniors on this team...watch out for them in three years.) Matos got the start, though he is quite hobbled. Drexel has a lot of size, quite on par with GW's twin towers. Kenny fouls Matos, who hits both free throws to open the game. Then he gets a layup. Hungerford draws a charge, and Byron Taylor hits a three. Woods gets fouled, and the hoop. Jack gets the assist. Woods makes it 7-3. 12.6.84: vs VMI (2-3)
The Keydets' yearly date has come up. They have lost three in a row, though one was to Virginia. They peaked two seasons ago with a NCAA berth, and appear to be on their way back down right now. They still have four-year starter Solomon Baldwin (11.4 ppg, 7.8 rpg), and guard Kenny Rowlett, who is averaging a team-high 16.6 points per game. They are pretty woeful, though, especially on the boards. GW should breeze through here. Clayton Moose! That's a great name. He wins the jump for VMI. Rowlett misses an easy layup, and Jack scores on the other end. Then he gets a steal and finds Kenny for free, and then fouls Herb Buckingham (sounds like an 80s baseball player, Herb Willingham). Hulett hits a three, and it's 8-0 early. Woods scores...10-0 three minutes in. Jack finds Hulett. 12-0. VMI scores with 15:01 left. Woods makes it 14-2, then promptly gets his second foul, and the team's seventh. If VMI gets back in this game, it's there. Baldwin hits, but Hulett hits a three off a Jack pass. 17-4. Armbruster drills a three. Jack gets a steal and a dunk on the other end. 22-6. Jack gets a layup and his second foul. Out he goes, in comes Ali, who of course takes a three. Arthur Smith is averaging 10.8 points and 6.0 rebounds. They are the leading defensive rebounding team in the nation...yet they give up 75 points a game. A lot of this does not compute. One thing that doesn't happen...they don't shoot well. And neither do the teams that face them. Yet, there are high-scoring games. Can you imagine the brickfest this game is going to be? A bit of history...Jack is now 29 points away from the all-time scoring record. So, he's likely to get it, either in this game, or the next. It may likely be in this one. 12.17.84: vs Lehigh (1-6) The Mountain Hawks are a perennial doormat. They have won 24 games in the last three seasons, and are one of the few teams never to see the postseason. This year, their offense is a major issue, which is a major issue when facing a team like GW. They also rebound horribly. They are outrebounded by an average of 8.3 a game. That's 225th in the country. And they shoot worse than 39% from the field. That's atrocious. The backcourt of Jack Powers and Bradley Daniels "lead" the way. They are averaging 12.6 and 10.1 points, respectively. This is not an offense to marvel at, unfortunately for Lehigh fans. Lehigh is one of the smaller teams in the NCAA, which makes sense for their rebounding woes. Armbruster opens things with a three. Ron Martin scores for Lehigh. Jack finds Hulett in the corner. Kenny with a steal, and a layup...that's his third such play this game. It's 58-37 with 17:09 left to go. Jack gets it to Woods, who gets it to go, and the foul. He hits, and it's 61-37. Jack finds Armbruster. He is facilitating like crazy. GW has 19 assists. Kenny hits off a Grayson pass. Jack gets his fourth foul. This is a frustrating game. I speed up the game, and nothing of any particular note happens. Lehigh begins to chip away, but GW has answers. Armbruster goes on a little streak...he has 13 with 8:30 left. Woods has ten again. His scoring is up this year. It's 77-50 with 7:20 left. It gets to 85-57 with five minutes left...Jack is not coming back, as the subs come in. The final is 94-64. Jack finishes with just 13 points in 19 minutes. The POTG is Hector, who scores 13 with six assists and three steals. It is very rare that someone other than Jack is POTG. It happened here. Code:

To add to the POTG tidbit from last game...
Jack's GP: 108 Jack's POTG: 101 Only seven times has he not won the honor. That is nuts. Jack sits at 2,799 points. He needs sixteen to tie Sarver. 12.22.84: vs St. John's (3-3) This is the hottest ticket DC has seen since the Redskins got to the NFC title game. Granted, that was only last year, but the point remains. This is a huge game in DC sports history. The Johnnies have beaten teams they should, and lost, mostly, to teams they shouldn't. They score at a hideous rate, just 56.5 a game. They give up just 59.8 a game. They play at a plodding pace...their adjusted FG rate is 232nd out of 234 teams. But they hold teams to only 37% shooting, fifteenth in the nation. One wonders how they'll do against GW, who is shooting at a 50% clip, fifth in the nation, and scoring 82.5 a game. Only John Parton is averaging in double-figures, and that's 10.3 a game. Timmy Correa and Steve Callen are the most talented on the team. Callen averages 8.7 points and 10.7 rebounds out of the center spot. So, Armbruster and Woods are going to have a battle. This is a young roster with four junior starters, and only one senior on the roster (and he barely plays). They are two years removed from a NCAA bid, and are continuing to rebuild. Hopefully Jack's foul woes as of late are curbed. Jack gets a steal and a layup for the game's first points. Correa responds. Kenny drills a three, but Efrain Stamp responds. Jack finds Armbruster. St. John's gets it back to fifteen, as the momentum gotten by Jack was wiped away by the ceremony. Hector has seven, and he gets a steal. It's 69-50 with 6:36 left...Jack comes back. Tommy Orellana comes in and scores, as St. John's tries to fight back. It's down to 69-55 as Correa hits. Hulett with another turnover. Orellana goes to the line, and hits both. It's down to 12. GW is ice cold at the moment. Hulett heads to the line, and hits both. They are shooting well from there right now. Jack gets his dunk blocked by Correa. The Johnnies have 11 blocks. Duke continued their season-long run atop the AP Poll by continuing their undefeated season. Rice and Kansas stayed #2 and #3, respectively, and then there was some jostling in the poll, based on writer preference (and region). Maryland, who lost to #22 TCU, dropped eleven spots to #16. That enabled George Washington to slide back up a spot, to #8. Princeton, who has only gotten in six games this year, continued their rise up the polls. They moved up three spots to #9. Code:
12.26.84: vs Appalachain State (3-7) The Mountaineers have a surprising history of success, especially recently. They reached the postseason four years in a five-year stretch from 1977-82. They won only ten games a year ago, though, and are still on a downward trend. The culprit is an inability to prevent teams from scoring or rebounding. They are a good rebounding team themselves, but they are still outrebounded on the general. They are also a team still growing. They start two juniors and two sophomores, and only have two seniors on the roster. There is a lot of potential on the roster. Sam Hurley (14.3 ppg), Laurence Driver (11.3 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 2.8 apg), Jason Irby (9.9 ppg, 8.2 rpg) and Randolph McCutchen (8.3 ppg, 8.3 rpg) lead the way. But this roster does contribute up and down. They just don't find consistency, which is why they are losing. Once they find it, the Southern Conference is in trouble. Jack opens things up with a three. Driver gets App State on the board. 12.28.84: vs Temple (7-3)
Temple may be the worst 7-3 ever put together. They've been outscored. Of course, that's not hard when these are your wins: 69-67, 60-55, 65-63, 70-65, 51-50, 81-80 (and 69-49). They could just as easily be 1-9. They have a pretty good defense (57th in the country), but are deadly mediocre on offense. They appear to lull teams into slow games and rushed shots, which is why nobody in their games shoot well, them or their opponents. They are also dead last in assists, at 7.7 a game. GW is 24th in the country, at 16.5. They have reasonable experience, with two 100+ game guys, a 98-game guy, and a few over 50 games. Omar Davis is the leader of the team, and the miserable offense. He is scoring 19 a game; nobody else is putting up more than 8.5 a game. Jack hits a three to open the game. Calvin Glassman gets a hoop...Woods responds, then Jack hits from the baseline. Jack then gets a steal and a dunk. Chris Standard (a fantastic 90s wrestling name) hits a three. It's 9-5 after two minutes. Hulett drills a three. This is kind of a homecoming for Jack, who grew up 90 minutes west in Harrisburg. Hulett drills another three, and it's 16-5. Jack has a 7-0-0 line. Jack finds Hector for a score. Jack gets another steal and a layup. Ahmed Hall hits a three...it's 20-8 with 12:37 left. Hector gets fouled, and the bucket. Three-point play and he has five early points. Grayson hits, and gets fouled. GW is shooting 71% from the field early on. Ali hits his first bucket, playing the 2. Jack plows into Glassman for the charge. Armbruster draws one back. Rene Eugene, a great jobber wrestling 80s name, is in for Temple. James Cahill is in, as Jack takes a seat for Kenny. GW has made only 40% of their free throws thus far. Hector hits a three, and it's 32-12, as Temple calls time. Hector and Kenny are the backcourt, before Hulett and Jack come back, along with Michael King. Hall hits a three. Jack gets a steal, then finds Hulett in the corner. It's 34-18 with 4:54 left. Glassman hits, but Armbruster responds. Then he drills a three. Jack with a steal, but nothing comes of it. He has four or five steals this half. Kenny gets one. Chris Standard gets the layup. Jack has gone cold since his early run. He's got a 9-2-3 line, and it's 41-22. Kenny blocks Omar's dunk...Armbruster scores inside, and the foul! But, in typical GW fashion today, he misses the free throw. Hulett drills a three off a Jack pass. It's 46-22. Hector hits a three at the buzzer, and it's 49-22. Hulett's got 13, Hector 12, Jack 9, Armbruster 7. Jack is fouled, plus one, to start the second half. He hits the free throw. GW is shooting 41% from the line now. But 63% from three. Go figure. Jack has become much less of a scorer since his freshman year, when he outscored teams by himself twice. He hits a three, and he has 15. The point remains though...perhaps it's his teammates...Hall hits a three...Chris Standard with a steal and a layup, and it's 55-28. Jack doesn't score as much. Glassman hits, and Jack responds with a bucket, AND the foul...he gets the freebie, and it's 58-30. Jack has 18-5-4 with 15:51 left. Jack finds Kenny as soon as I write that sentence. Glassman gets to the line, and hits both. Temple is shooting 33%. Jack finds Kenny again. Hall hits another three...he has 15, the only person scoring routinely for Temple. Ernie Reese gets one of two free throws. He gets back and hits both. It's 62-38. Jack drills a three, giving him 21. Richie Renner draws a charge on Hector, who now has three fouls. Hulett hits a three...the lead is back to 38. Denny Perez is in. He gets fouled, goes 1-2. Glassman gets a layup, and the foul, and the free throw. He has 11. Jack responds with a layup. Jack hits another three, assisted by Hulett. He has 26-5-6, and the score is 75-41. Jack gets fouled...he hits both. 77:53 left. Hector gets a steal, and Ali hits a three. Temple calls time. Jack with the suddenly rare block. Then he comes out with 6:10 left. Dunno if he'll come back. Hall scores...he has 17. The JVs come in for GW, and that's gonna do it here. It's 82-46 with 4:18 left, as I fast forward. Just noticed Hector has 15, and Ali 12. Wow. Hector finished with 17, and the final is 94-50. That was an absolute demolishing. Jack finished with 28 on 10-16, 4-4 FT, 4-6 3, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 steals, and a block. Not bad. Temple is a bad opponent, but it's good to get a complete win on the road. Duke started the season atop the poll, then will end the first half of the year atop it. They are 11-0. The five teams behind them--Rice, Southern Cal, BYU, Missouri, and Baylor--all have one loss each. The seventh-ranked team, George Washington, is also 11-0. It is surprising, perhaps disappointing, to see Armbruster not make that leap ahead of Woods. I get that Woods is the senior, and he's more experienced...but Armbruster is, far and away, the superior player. He should be averaging a double-double a game, or something like 12-8. He's been lackluster. Jack's scoring dropping is also disappointing. Part of that is his shooting percentage dropping, but it's also more shots being taken by others. Hulett is attempting to be a scoring machine. And Armbruster is inconsistent, but he's trying. That takes away from Jack's output overall. Code:

Checking In With Old Coaches...
Since Jack has gone through two coaches, I figured, why not see what they're up to. Was leaving the right call for their career? Arlie Jennings Left GW for Bucknell after 1981-82 (28-5, Elite Eight appearance) Since: 30-42, 1-8 this season To be fair, Jennings has no seniors on this team, and had a reclamation project from his first team. But Bucknell had the momentum of back-to-back NCAA appearances, and suddenly got the coach who coached the Golden Boy. And he has failed to do anything with it. His first two recruiting classes ranked 121st and 133rd, lower-mid tier of the ECC. He has pulled in two three-star players with it, but he's supposed to be better at this. This year's club has played an ambitious schedule. They got blown out at Rice, and again at Cornell. They just got taken apart by Columbia. Truth is, they're getting beat by an average of 80-59 this season. And they have games at Penn (on NYE, actually), and, on January 9th, they head to GW for Jack's senior tour. Parting is such sweet sorrow. Soon, Bucknell will be saying that to him. Marty Reed Went 53-4, won a national championship last season Left For Murray State: 5-9 this season Reed gained a lot quickly, though he is putrid at coaching defense. But his first head coaching stint couldn't have gone better. He won a national title and was known as a player's coach (though other coaches did not like him inserting Jack back into games late, after the outcome was decided...they didn't tell their kids to hurt Jack, out of respect to him. But they let Reed know it. Reed said that he was helping the younger players get some experience...nobody bought that). This year, he inherited a solid Murray State team, and has proceeded to run them into the ground. His two best players, SG Alec Shaw (8.9 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 3.8 apg, 1.3 spg) and SF Chris Gaffney (17.8 ppg in just 29.7 mpg) are woefully underused. Chris Freeman, a solid-enough post player, is averaging 13.9 points a game, but on just 49% shooting. Why is he taking that many shots? Sure, Shaw is shooting 38%, but he's relying on the three (28% on 71 shots). If Reed would let him drive, which is what he's best at, he'd go up quickly. Reed's already got more losses this year than he had in two at GW, and he is learning quickly that it's not all glitter and rainbows. |

That diabolical preppy 80s-movie jerk, Brady Cory, is still there. Oddly enough, the Leopards have two players from Fayetteville...but one from different states (NC, TN). The Leopards are a reasonably veteran squad (Cory has played in 101, Carmelo Kiely has played in 87 and started 78, several others have played at least 45), that is trying to get back to the NCAA after missing out last year (NIT bid). The Colonials will be the first team the Leopards have faced that is a true challenge...the only team they beat that has a winning record is Loyola-Chicago. They are a solid offensive unit who has feasted on poor defenses thus far. GW presents a challenge for them, easily. That offense is led by guard Sandy Cosgrove (16.5 ppg) and Kiely (16.4 ppg, 7.7 rpg). Cory only averages 5.3 ppg, but also 5.8 rpg and 4.6 apg. This team is solid at rebounding. Truth be told, I like when GW plays Lafayette. There aren't many teams Jack has faced all four years. The Leopards are one of them. Richard Welker hits the first bucket of the game for Lafayette. Hulett hits a three for GW. Jack's first attempt is blocked, but Woods follows. Jack gets his first points following his own miss. It's 7-2 with four minutes played. Cosgrove hits a three, but Jack responds. Hector gets a steal and a layup. He's become quite wait he got another...adept at it. Two in fifteen seconds. 14-5 with five minutes gone. Jack finds Woods. Then he blocks Kiely's shot. It's 17-5 with 12:34 left. Jack has a 5-4-2 line after finding Woods. Chuck Eyler hits a three, but Jack responds. Woods hits, and with 10:11 left, it's 23-12. Ali comes in for Jack. Jack then comes back at C, and hits a jumper. When Jack is at the center spot, GW is especially nasty. Eyler gets a tip, but Jack responds with a three. Grayson comes in and Jack slides to the 4. Armbruster comes in for Grayson after four seconds. Jack scores again. He has 14. Lafayette has 16. Well, Cosgrove hit a three. Hector responds after a Jack pass. Oddly enough, Lafayette, though playing horribly, is staying there. Jack hits two free throws...it's 34-19, but Welker just got a three-point play. Jack responds again. Cory gets his first points off a three. It's 36-25, but Jack gets two free throws. 38-25, 2:36 left. Cosgrove hits two free throws...Kenny hits two. Welker scores, and it's 40-29. Ali drills a three, but Welker responds with a jumper. Ali is fouled, and he goes one of two. Jack comes back. Danny Fuller finds Kiely. Hector is fouled, gets both. Welker hits. 46-35. Jack gets several rebounds on the final possession, but Hector's three is waved off. It's 46-35 at the half, as Lafayette got hot late. Jack has a 20-6-3 line. Welker has 13 for the Leopards, who also have 11 turnovers, to just three for GW. Jack gets a block of Kiely's dunk, then finds Woods for the score. Cosgrove respondsm with a three. Cory gets his third or fourth foul. Armbruster scores...he only has three. Eyler gets a three-point play off Armbruster's third foul. It's 50-41. Jack gets fouled by Kiely, and he hits both. Hulett with a steal, and a layup. That's his first score since his opening three. Jack hits again...he has 24-7-4. Jonathan Cundiff scores. Oh yeah, Carrol Jim is on this team...forgot about him. Armbruster gets fouled, and he misses both. He is playing hesitant right now. Woods fouls Willie Gomez, who goes one of two. 56-46. Jack finds Hector for the basket. Jack's up to 24-11-5. Jack scores from the corner...Hulett with a steal...Jack hits off that. It's 62-46 and Jack gets a steal, but he misses. Hulett is fouled...he hits both. It's 64-46, and a close game feels so far away. Grayson is in. He hasn't done anything. Jack commits his first foul, a charge...he gets a steal, and finds Hulett for the bucket. Jack gets a board, and finds Hulett again. He's up to 11, Jack has 28-13-7, and it's 68-48. Hector comes back...he has ten of the sneakiest points you'd ever see. Eyler hits a three. Hulett gets two free throws, as Jack comes back. Tony Matthews hits three. Armbruster gets to the line, goes one for two. It's 72-56, as here comes Lafayette. Jack hits another shot. He has 30. Grayson gets in the stat sheet, as he gets a rebound and an assist on Hector's three. Jack finds Armbruster for a hoop. Jack throws down an emphatic dunk, causing a timeout with 4:49 left. It's 81-58, and only a matter of time before everyone comes out. Hulett finds Jack for a score. The JVs come in with 2:15 left...what was a close game became completely one-sided, and it revolved around Jack's total ability to take over a game. Hector, meanwhile, is on a roll. He had 15. Kenny, meanwhile, didn't take a shot, and had just two points in 24 minutes. Gotta wonder if he's losing confidence, or his place on the team. Hector is taking his role, and while there's total confidence in Hector, there seems to be waning confidence in Kenny. This is not good, and something to watch. Code:

The Eagles are a throwback in the naming department. Cameron Spurlock, Gene Asbury, Errol Spencer...this group is going to take part in a WWII buddy movie. The Eagles are not particularly good, and they've lost the only home game they've played. They did play #17 North Carolina to a 71-69 decision against...but they haven't played anyone since. They haven't reached the postseason since 1973-74, when they went 23-8 and got to the NCAA. That was, far and away, their best season. This team, however, is your typical ugly unit. They don't play well on offense, play okay on defense, play slowly and limit teams from rebounding all over them, because they can't rebound themselves. GW should slaughter these guys, which would be against the law, since eagles are protected. George Washington slaughtering an eagle. Hmmm. Head coach Casey Whiteley (71-84) is on his last legs in Ypsilanti. Hulett opens with a three, and a tech for taunting. Arnold Ford hits both free throws. Kenny gets a steal, and Armbruster scores. Hector gets a steal, and Jack scores off a pass. It's 8-2 with four minutes gone. Hulett gets a steal and a hard foul on a dunk attempt. He's scrappy though...he hits both. Then he gets another steal and a layup. Asbury hits a three. Jack finds Hulett in response. It's got nine early points, and it's 14-7, as Spencer hits two free throws. Jack finds Hulett again. Ellingson hits a shot. Jack finds Hulett again. Carlos Hubblell, Carl's grandson, scores. It's 18-11 with 12:16 left. Ford hits two free throws. Woods is fouled on a dunk...he hits one of two. Kenny scores! There you go, Kenny! John Cofield hits. Grayson is fouled, and he hits both. Jack, Hulett and Armbruster come back, and Hulett's in a zone. Jack has another assist for him. Cofield hits and gets fouled by Armbruster. Sebasitan somethingorother comes in...Esquirrel or whatever. Frazier tips in a Jack miss. Esquirrel misses, and Jack hits on the other end. It's 34-18 with five minutes left. Spurlock hits. Hulett hits again. He's got 20. Ford steals from Kenny. Spurlock scores. Jack finds Hulett AGAIN. Jack gets Armbruster a three. With 2:50, the JVs come back in with a 44-22 lead.Grayson commits a foul, and Ellison hits. Ford gets a steal, but Hector fouls him. Nothing comes of it...Boutwell gets a point, as Jack and Hulett come back. Ford scores...45-26, one minute left. Armbruster scores, and gets fouled. He misses the freebie. Jack hits off a King pass...the half ends that way, and with GW up 49-26. Hulett had 22 at the half. Jack has a 8-5-7 line, and GW has 14 assists overall. They shot 73% from the field against EMU's defense. Jack hits from the corner to start things. Jack hits a three off a Hulett pass. Then Jack fouls Asbury. Hulett hits a three off a Jack pass. Duke is the unanimous #1, as they should. They have been ranked there since the dawn of the season. Rice and Baylor, both Southwest Conference playmates, are second and third. Southern Cal is 4th, while Missouri and BYU round out the list of one-loss teams that trail Duke. Kansas, meanwhile, leapfrogged GW for #7. The Colonials fell to eighth. TCU, another one-loss Southwest team, is ninth, while Clemson has gotten back into the top ten. The late season, meanwhile (the Ivy League season ends on 3.16) means #11 Princeton is just 6-1 at this stretch in the year. Meanwhile, #20 Alabama remains the third unbeaten, the one nobody talks about. And they've been lurking in the lower end of the rankings for awhile now. No respect. I wonder if that's warranted. January 7, 1985: vs American (6-5) Ralph Ham! has become a bonafide star. I've always enjoyed his name, but he's become a G/B phenomenon. Ralph Ham! is averaging 15.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.9 assists (with 3.7 turnovers) a game this year. The Golden Eagles, who start four seniors (and a freshman), revolve around Ralph Ham! and backcourt mate Bradford Collins (10.4 ppg, 2.9 apg). The backcourt is American University lore...they've started three years together, and have seen tough times. Now, they'll see Jack for the fourth, and final, time. As far as a way to slow him down...well, American plays a slow place. They are not a good rebounding team, but they limit rebounding opportunities. They shoot from range at a reasonable pace (37%), and shoot free throws very well (74%; 13th nationally). GW will be wise to not put them on the line. Jack finds Hulett for the opening bucket. Joe Reyes hits a three for American, but Jack finds Hulett again. Jack then finds Armbruster off a Kenny steal. Reyes scores, then fouls Armbruster. Jack gets fouled by Ham, who also has a turnover. They tried it a third time, but people thought that was overkill. Still, it's 57-41 at the half. Jack had a 14-6-9 line, while Hulett has 20 points and two rebounds. American had 12 turnovers, eight of which came on GW steals. GW shot 67% from the field, but American shot 54%. Armbruster gets a steal, and Jack finds Woods. That's Jack's tenth assist. Both teams are cold, but Jack scores. He's got 16-6-10. Jack forces a turnover. Hulett's hot streak is over. Collins scores...it's 61-44. American got four looks on one possession. They are winning the rebounding battle. Jack scores on the right wing...Jack hits again. He has 20, matching Hulett. It's 65-45. Jack hits again...then he finds Hulett for a bucket. It's 69-45. Hulett picks Ham's pocket, and Jack finds Armbruster for the score. Then Hulett commits his fourth foul. Collins snags the ball from Hector, and Jason Hinman scores. Jack finds Ali for a bucket. He also gets his ninth rebound. Jack finds Hector...that's assist #14. Then he comes out, one rebound away. Marty Reed would've made the game longer so Jack could get a triple-double. But now, he's done. Four minutes left, he's not coming back. And rightfully so. The final is 81-60. Jack and Hulett are insane right now. GW had 22 assist...Jack 14 of them. January 9, 1985: vs Bucknell (2-10)
I've discussed Bucknell's troubles a few entries ago...but truly, this is one of the worst teams in the nation. They are 223rd in both total offense and defense. They are being outscored by 20 points a game. They allow teams to shoot 49% against them, which is 233rd out of 234 teams. That's pretty rough. This is a young team, with three new starters. The only holdovers are Major Jensen and Don Rabb, and neither of them are playing particularly well. Aaron Littleton, a redshirt sophomore forward, leads the team in scoring with 10.9 points a game. He's shooting 37% from the field, and 59% at the line. This is not a good team. Littleton opens the game with a score, and Darrell Deaver gets a steal and an assist to Littleton. Deaver scores from the baseline. Hmmm. GW is slow to wake up here, missing their first four attempts. Deaver is fouled, and he makes one of two, causing GW to call time. Hulett comes out of that with a three. Jack throws one down on LIttleton, and gets the foul. He hits the freebie...it's 7-6. Hulett's hot streak appears over. He also appears very fired up to stick it to Jennings. Bucknell is rebounding like mad here. Grayson gets a three-point play, and GW leads 9-7. Hector hits two free throws...Perez gets a dunk off a miss. Cristobal Smith hits two free throws...Woods gets two free throws, and Jack hits a three. Jack is 2-2 so far. Jensen gets hurt. Jack hits from the left wing. The guards are in such foul trouble that Ferdinand Boutwell is in. Jack goes to the line and hits both. He has 10. Donovan Farrow hits a jumper. Jack finds Kenny for three...Armbruster with a steal and a layup. Hulett comes in and commits his third foul. Jack finds Kenny, and it's 29-17 with 6:15 left. Ali drills a three. It's 32-20. Hector finds Ali for a bucket...who then fouls Littleton on a three. Jack's back, and he finds Kenny. He's got a 10-5-3 line right now, 36-24 with 3:26 left. Jack misses a three. Jerry Luttrell scores. Woods scores off a Jack pass. Kenny with a steal and a layup. Jack with a steal...but he can't get the bucket. Deaver gets the lead back down to 10. Jack throws down a dunk off a Hector pass. Then he hits two free throws. Rabb hits a three with two seconds le5ft. Hector hits a three from beyond halfcourt to end the half. That makes the score, 47-34. Jack has a 14-6-4 line. Bucknell outrebounded GW, 22-17. That's no good. Littleton had eight for the Bison. Littleton travels on the first possession, and Woods gets an illegal screen. Jack charges into Deaver. Kenny gets a steal, and Jack finds Armbruster. Hulett hits his first shot of the half. It's 51-34. Jack gets more trailing blocks than anyone I've seen. He gets it to Hulett for three. Woods scores inside, and the lead is twenty. Woods draws a charge on Rabb. It's 56-36 with 14:43 left. Deaver scores, but Jack responds. Deaver scores again. Jack finds Hulett for a tough basket. Jack has a 16-7-7 line. Jack drills a three off a Hulett pass. Patterson has six assists...Farrow scores...Jack scores off a Hector pass. Jack gets a block and a board. Jack gets a steal, and throws down a dunk. Then he does something he never does..he taunts the defender. Hector finds Jack on a lob for the dunk off a steal. It's 70-48 with 8:19 left. He's got 25-9-7. Jack finds Hector...both have eight assists. Jack finds Hector again. Hector has a 9-1-8 line. Jack gets it to Hector again, and now he has a triple-double...25-11-10. Jack scores off a Kenny steal, then he comes out to a standing ovation. Jack looks over at Bucknell's bench as he walks off. Hector scores...he's up to 13. He's got this ability to make a lot of plays in his short time on the floor...he and Jack have unbelievable chemistry together. The final is 84-58. GW ended out outrebounding Bucknell, 40-36. They shot 53% from the floor, 37% from three. Bucknell shot 33% and 11%, respectively. GW, behind Jack and Hector, had 24 assists. In addition to Jacks 27-11-10 line, where he shot 10-14 from the field, he had three steals and three blocks. Pretty complete game. Jack said after the game that it wasn't until Jennings left that the program really took off. It's hard to argue with that. They have a 37-game winning streak, a national championship, and the best team in school history. And Arlie Jennings has what he has in Lewisburg. Code:

Duke and GW could be on that collision course I hoped for early in the year. The Blue Devils are 15-0, as is GW. Duke stayed atop the polls, where they have been all year, ahead of Rice, Southern Cal, Missouri, BYU, Baylor, TCU, and GW. The Colonials stay at 8, having been leapt by TCU. That will change as the Southwest begins conference play soon. I jinxed Alabama. They lost for the first time last week, falling to 5-10 Kentucky. (Note: Polls printed on Saturday, January 19th.) January 19, 1985: at La Salle (7-7) The Explorers are going through a rebuild, as they have three seniors, one junior, two sophomores, and eight freshmen on their roster. They're also hurting; starting point guard Tony Gholston has been injured for the last eight games, and won't suit up. Starting C, and old friend, Tom Ford is banged up. The Explorers have reached the last three NCAA tournaments, including an Elite Eight appearance two years ago...they don't project to be there for a fourth consecutive time. Jeff King, who I reminded you last year would become third baseman for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the late 80s, is averaging 18.5 points a game. Canadian tongue twister Thierry Desmillescamp averages 11.5 points a game as a freshman. He was the 63rd overall recruit in last year's class. Randal Burt, a sophomore guard, is putting up 10.7 points a game in increased time over last year. The Explorers have plaeyd a slowed down pace over years past...but they also let teams score on them, and do so effectively. Hulett gets a steal immediately, and gets it to Kenny for a dunk. Demillescamp hits a three to open things up for La Salle. Tomford has a pretty bad minute or so, getting tied up, and tossing the ball into the stands twice. Jack finds kenny for three. Hulett scores off a Woods pass. Jack finds Woods in the corner for a bucket...Kenny gets a steal and a layup. He has 7, and it's 11-3, GW, with three minutes played. Tomford scores. Stan Peters gets a dunk and a foul...it's 11-8. Armbruster gets fouled, he misses both. Such a bad free throw shooter. Desmillescamp hits a three to tie it...Kenny breaks the press and gets a layup. Armbruster gets fouled and the bucket. Demillescamp hits another three. He has nine. He gets a a steal and a dunk. It's 18-16 after Kenny responds with a three. Jack has yet to take a shot yet. But he'll go to the line, after Peters gets a T. He hits both, then finds Hulett for three. It's 23-16. Jack has a 2-2-3 line. Jack finds Hulett again. His ability to find teammates for easy open looks is amazing. Jack misses his first actual shot, taken with 10:47 left. Grayson hits off a Jack pass. 27-16. Hector comes in and hits a three. Chris Smith responds with a layup, but Jack gets fouled...he hits both the other way, and it's 32-18 with 9:29 left. Smith gets a steal, and gets fouled by Grason. He misses both. Jack finds Perez for a bucket. Tomford gets two freebies the other way, and Hector is fouled. He gets two freebies. It's 36-20. Tyler Daniel gets two free throws...these two teams are being pretty chippy with one another. Jack sits with 7:38 left, and the score 38-22. He comes back a minute later, as Tomford scores. Then he fouls Woods, who hits one of two. Jack gets fouled by Jonathan Freeman, scores the bucket, but has a rare miss at the line. Hulett gets a steal and a layup at the other end. Jack gets a three. GW has run away with this thing...it's 46-28 with 3:44 left. Jack has a 9-4-6 line. King hits a three. Jack commits his second foul. King hits two free throws, and the lead is down to eleven. Ali skies for a dunk, but Burt responds for three. Jack gets a steal and a dunk...King responds with a dunk of his own. Jack finds Armbruster, and Hector gets a steal and a layup. Tomford is fouled by Perez, and he scores. He has 8-6-0. Jack is out of the game for the rest of the first half, which ends with GW up, 55-44. The Colonials shot 66%, but let La Salle shoot 50%. The Explorers also outrebounded the Colonials, 19-13. GW does have six steals in the half, something they are incredibly proficient at. Jack has an 11-4-7 line as the half begins. Kenny has 12, Hulett 11, with three fouls. Burt hits a three, and here comes La Salle, down eight. Jack finds Kenny for a bucket. Jack is blocked by Tomford, and Freeman finds Burt. Hulett rushes up a three...Freeman gets a dunk, and it's 57-51. Ford has 8-13-1 numbers. Jack gets a steal, but Armbruster gets blocked. Hard to believe Armbruster (4-2-0) is the same guy who started the season with 17 points and 17 boards. Hulett hits a three, Jack gets a steal and a layup at the other end. Back to 62-51 with 13:20 left. Jack finds Woods for an easy dunk. Desmillescamp hits a three. Jack sits for a moment, and Armbruster charges into Freeman. Burt scores, and it's 64-58. Jack gets his third foul. He gets a rebound and scores on the other end. He has a 15-6-9 line at the moment. Jack gets fouled, and makes both. 68-58, 9:46 left. Jack gets a steal on the next possession, and a layup on the other end. He leads all scorers with 19. Desmillescamp has 16 for La Salle. Armbruster goes 1-2 from the line, making it 71-58, and an Explorers timeout. GW is imposing its defensive will, but Burt hits a three to respond to Hector's three. Jack gets an and-one on Ford...he has 22-8-9. It's 77-61, and the game doesn't feel close now. Jack scores off an Armbruster pass. Danny Cervantes scores. Hulett responds. Jack comes out with 2:19 left, the only starter not on the floor, which is odd. There's a minute left, and the score is 81-63. La Salle put up a great fight, but ran out of gas and GW's defense tighthed up. The final is 81-63. Desmillescamp did his damage in the first half, and scored only three in the second. GW held La Salle to just 19 points in the second half. Jack went 24-9-9 with four steals and a block. Code:

Duke is still undefeated, having beaten #19 Virginia and #13 Clemson on the road last week. They get Virginia again, then at #16 Maryland, at NC State (12-3), at Wake Forest (11-4), and then, they host the now-#9 Colonials. GW fell another spot, despite being 16-0. Kansas surged from 9th to 6th in this poll. BYU also dropped three spots after suffering their second loss of the season. Code:
January 21, 1985: at St. Bonaventure (8-9) The Bonnies are enjoying their best season since 1980, when they went 16-13. They have already matched their win total from a year ago. They play hard and, despite not getting any wins over teams of consequence, or having an overly talented roster, may be tough to beat. They are, in all honesty, a scrappy team. SG Joey Deel is their leading star, averaging 17.8 points and 4.7 rebounds a game. Point guard Henry Massey averages 12.8 a game. Nobody else averages more than 7.8. They have a veteran roster, four senior starters, a redshirt junior, and a senior off the bench. One of those redshirt seniors is Harold Bosworth; he is a red/yellow player. That should illustrate the toughness of this team. They play above themselves. They probably cannot play above themselves enough to beat the Colonials. Michael Guiterrez opens the scoring. Armbruster hits two free throws! That ties the game. Deel beats the press for a layup. Hulett gets fouled and the bucket, but no free throw. Gutierrez scores again...Jack finds Hulett in responds. Jack has yet to take a shot. Bosworth, that red/yellow savant, hits a three. Jack responds, then gets a steal that leads to an Armbruster foul. With 14:44 left, GW leads 10-9. Jack gets an offensive board, and he finds Hulett. Gutierrez scores...Hector gets fouled by Massey, and the bucket. It's 15-11...Jack gets a steal, and scores from the corner. He's got a 5-5-2 line. Jack gets fouled by Deel, and he goes 1-2. Jack scores again from the line, then a steal, and he finds Woods. He has given GW a 22-11 lead. Hulett fouls Massey, who scores. Norris Salvatore hits a three. Joe Theis hits a three, as Jack comes out. St. Bonaventure cuts the lead to 22-21. Ali hits two free throws...it's 24-21 with 7:41. Jack comes back after Ali gets two more freebies. Hulet scores off a Jack pass. Jack gets a block, and Woods scores on the other end. It's back to 30-21. John Gustafson scores, but Hulett hits a three off a Jack pass. Jack has an 8-5-5 line, Hulett has 11, but Douglas Haddock gets a three-point play on the other end. It's 35-26 with 4:24 left. The score is 37-32 at the half...St. Bonaventure definitely lived up to that scrappy billing, shooting 57% from the field (only 43% from the line), and getting nine turnovers, and being outrebounded 24-14...they held GW to 31% shooting to keep the game close. Jack had an 8-7-5 line, while Hulett has 13. Jack finds Woods in the opening seconds. Alec Dufrene gets his own tip, while Jack scores on the other end. Jack finds Woods. It's 43-34. That's Kenny's first points of the game. He has a 3-2-1-4 line. Jack finds Armbruster. He has 12 assists, Armbruster has 14, and it's 73-57. Bosworth hits. Deel hits a three...73-60 with 2:23 left. Hector finds Woods, who has ten points and seven rebounds. Massey scores. Woods scores from the corner. The JVs come in with :42 left. The final is 77-62, but it felt closer. Jack seemed like he had a rather quiet line, with 17 points, but his 12 assists were huge. And five of his nine rebounds were on the offensive end. He only got to the line one time, and went 1-2. He got four steals, which were big. The team only shot 5-20 from three, and that let the Bonnies stay in the game. Code:
