Roguelike Comp Pre-#3 discussion
I thought I'd create a new thread to discuss the upcoming comp. It seems like we lost some steam with the last one and I think it'd be a good idea to keep the same Monday start schedule but either begin the new one either 1-2 weeks from this upcoming Monday to give people a chance to recharge their batteries.
As I mentioned in the other thread, I think going with ToME as the new variant is the way to go for a few reasons, mostly that it's more friendly and user-friendly than Z+ (more good items available early on, wilderness is far less threatening and not even necessary to fight in, far more documentation available). I also like that money is far less important, in Z+ since items were so scarce you needed to fret over each gp so you could buy your good items instead of taking them off monster corpses. Better still, even though everyone will run the same characters, there will be a great deal more variety between them because ToME introduces skill points to distribute upon leveling up that let you decide the direction of your character. In the opening post for the competition, I will provide a lot of information about the new mechanics and where to get more information so people who are new to it don't feel lost. The nice thing is about 99% of the commands are the same from Z+ so there won't be that much of a learning curve. I will probably make the intro post about a week before the competition officially starts in case people want to get their feet wet with the new variant and then I'll post the character file when it's time for it to start in earnest. It might take that long to read the opening post. Any thoughts from people as far as type of character you'd want to see or whatever options might make it more fun for you, feel free to have the discussion here, or else I'll just come up with everything and hope people have a good time. |

TOME is fine with me, its like the "Anti-ZPlusAngband" An extra week off to let people recharge their batteries is fine with me, but fine with not taking the week off too. What version of TOME will we be using? It's been a while since I played that variant and given its history, the latest version probably looks a lot different than the versions I have. Will give ideas for classes/races once I have a chance to look at the newest version.
Thanks for running this comp JAG. |

TOME is fine with me too - I'm happy to let you make all the decisions.

T.o.M.E 2.3.5. From my research, there was some work being done on a version 3, but it's in alpha and not fit for serious gameplay. Also, it seems that the original coder is no longer working on the game and the group that's taken over is not very organized and/or active. |

dola;
Does ToME work with the tile set that improved Zangband? Also, first game I got hit over the head, ended up in the theives guild dungeon and got killed trying to escape. |

Don't know about the tile set, but the real dungeon entrance you want rather than the thieves guild dungeon is outside of town to the west. You should be able to handle the thieves guild dungeon pretty quickly after your first trip down in the real dungeon. |

Not sure I have a race/class suggestion for you JAG. In looking over the possibilities, there are so many unique classes that it would perhaps be a shame not to try one, but a lot of those are hard to play. Then there's the gods in this variant, so a priest of one of them or a character that worships one seems like a good idea too.

It does work with the tile set, I use it myself. I'll write up the long intro post tomorrow and we'll plan on a Memorial Day start.
