Saban hires Major Applewhite

Saban hires Major Applewhite to be his new QB coach after applewhite spent one season as OC for Rice. Is it just me or is this guy suddenly becoming a hot coaching prospect?

This is his 4th coaching move in 4 years. He went from graduate assistant at Texas to QB Coach at Syracuse to OC at Rice, to now QB Coach at 'Bama. The reason he left training camp with the Patriots was because he decided he'd be better off starting his coaching career right away, and not ride the NFL pine for a few years. Looks like he made the right decision.

If I recall, they were calling him a prospective coach back in college. Because no one thought he could play in the NFL. But...more than other guys, I heard that while he was still a player and that he was doing all sorts of notetaking and preparing himself.

It's an interesting career move, that like you all said...has worked out okay for him it seems.

The Rice HC Job is open.. I suppose Applewhite got word that he would not be considered before leaving to take the OC Position at Alabama.

If he had one or two more years experience as an OC, I think that the Rice job would've been his.

I don't really look at that amount of movement as a good thing, though getting a job under Saban has been a career maker for a lot of guys.

You'd be surprised how common it is for people starting out in the coaching profession to constantly job hop.

Yeah, I was reading about some basketball assistant coaches who had something similar, another young guy who did the same thing. When you consider all of the change in the coaching profession, especially in this day and age, I'd think maybe a guy providing he can work under a lot of different guys is maybe a good thing until he's somewhere where he can implement his own system, etc.

And I'm figuring at 'Bama, Saban's assistants are probably doing decently well for themselves.
