End of Late Free Agency, Preparing for Training Camp

The Chili Dogs use the last stage of late free agency to work out deals with many of our restricted free agent players, and to make offers to our rookie players. I am hoping QB Brent Sedor accepts my offer, even though I chose to give him a 5 year deal rather than the shorter deal he’d probably prefer. Assuming he works out for us, there’s no way we’re letting him hit free agency, so the only question is when he needs to be renegotiated.

Sedor turns down our offer – so we will presumably have to bring him in on his terms at the next opportunity. It probably wasn’t even worth the risk to do this to begin with – there’s at least some risk that he will lose a trifle of development by missing training camp now.

To clear cap space for these signings, we have worked out s few things. We released QB Bobby Chesley, victim of the numbers game at QB as a veteran non-mentor, he just didn’t fit any longer. We renegotiated deals with DT Martin Santos and DE Cornelius Kleinsasser, both squeezing some space this season. A couple more pre-camp cuts, too – RB Floyd Fraser and LB Urso Harrold are given their outrights.

We also land RB Andy Guo, a guy we will give a look at WR to see if he can become a return specialist for us there. Initially, he moves from 21/29 to 16/31 as a split end, and he looks like he might have potential of about 50-60

To get enough cap space to make on last pre-camp offer to QB Sedor, we cut G James Cid – a veteran, strong affinity guy, but just costing us too much under the cap to stick around. When Sedor signs, he will make 63 players on our roster, so we will definitely have some cutting-down to do anyway, and he was on the “likely” list anyway.

Cary Lincoln has made the switch from FB to TE, and at 10/34, he probably needs a very good training camp to make the team. Prospect status dimming…

With that, we are ready to get a closer look at our youngsters in training camp, where we have balanced out the effort anticipating more commitment to the run this year than in years past.

Training Camp

Well, the bad news first – due to some sort of glitch (probably user error on my part), we didn’t get QB Brent Sedor into camp in time. My last contract offer didn’t even register, nor did the cut of G James Cid – so my last file submission didn’t connect, it seems. Oh, well… we lose a shade of development there, but probably not the end of the world.

We also missed on the chance to slide RB Andy Guo over to WR for training camp - another missed opportunity.

Anyway – the bigger news is that Brent Sedor held serve, basically – he dropped one point from 22/88 to 22/87 in the camp, so any worry about a massive drop there has been ameliorated. We don’t get to see him take a step forward in camp, but at least it’s not a step backward.

Interestingly enough, for the second straight year, Harry Ross had a good training camp, and continues to demonstrate his value to this team. Whether it’s as a long term backup, or as future trade bait, he certainly looks good enough to help us for now and later.

Among the rookie class, we have the predictable disappointments – WR Howie Hudson is going to be a decent return man for us, but he’s not going to be too productive in the passing game other than as a deep reserve. About what I had a right to expect from a fourth round pick, though I had gotten a taste of “draft goggles” with him, admittedly.

SS Doug Schwantz was a guy I had pretty high hopes for – and his training camp was a half-full glass. I had hoped for a big bump, instead we got a small one, only seeing his future potential rating jump from 52 to 53. All this does is get him back to where he was as we evaluated him for the draft – so a future as a 60-65 rated player is probably not going to happen after all. He looks like a pretty good fit for us anyway (though not a top-notch interception guy, which is disappointing at safety) so he will get some looks this season, but all told we are a little let down there.

I do think that a few of our URFA project players are going to make the team – T Jerry Burns rewarded my faith with a nice camp bump, and might get a loot at RT for us, actually. I’m enamored enough with the long-term affinity idea at DB to keep both CB Dixon Webb and S Brett Vesser on the team, I think – both show some promise and might fit into our longer term planning.

Disappointing to miss out on my last round of actions, but overall, at least we avoided a catastrophe. To keep it all in perspective - Sedor looks fine, and that’s more important than all the rest of this put together.

Position Focus: Tight End

In past years, the Chili Dogs have lined up in a lot of 3-WR sets, and have made real efforts to move the ball downfield using our wideouts as the primary engines for our passing game. In our initial few seasons, we rarely used a TE on the field at all, generally running with three or even four wide receivers and one or two backs.

With the signing of Clyde Rego as a free agent in 2006, we started working him into the mix a bit more – a solid veteran tight end, he caught 45, 41, and 65 passes in his three seasons as a starter for us, allowing a reasonable shift toward more TE usage than before. Through that time, our backup has been journeyman Clay Lannon – generally my ideal backup TE, who has good special teams skills, can do the long snapping, and has a positional affinity with our leader. (The position leader, Joel Connell, is himself a TE and special teamer, incidentally, and he has a roster spot sewn up, as he is the centerpiece for massive affinity gains within the WR/TE group)

This offseason, we acquired FB Bill Wunderlich by trade, which complicates things a bit. He is probably the most talented guy in our backfield now, even with the signing of Bill briner to be our main duty back. So, how to best use Wunderlich? Using him at the fullback position per se probably means he catches a fair number of underneath passes, but doesn’t contribute a lot to our actual success. I have had success with using a quality FB in more of an H-back role, slotting him at TE, in another league, and I envision a similar role here for Wunderlich.

So, amidst this change, we have another variable. We brought in a few new bodies at FB or TE for training camp, and it looks like we have one more mouth to feed. TE Robert Cooper was a pretty well-developed tight end who slipped through the draft, and largely because he projected to have an affinity with Connell, we brought him aboard to give him a look. He gave us an immediate bump up, and then another in training camp, and now looks like a pretty intriguing prospect at 27/44.

For a team that once basically shunned the TE position, we are now looking at ways to get multiple tight ends onto the field. Rookie Brent Sedor, also, is limited to only 8 formations at this point (after missing a training camp specifically designed to help him) so we probably need to make use of the ones he does know – including the 2TE pro set. Right now, I think our best talent to put on the field there is probably Wunderlich at TE1 and Rego at TE2. Robert Cooper, though, is an intriguing enough prospect that slotting him at TE2 might make more sense, on a team that’s trying to look a little more long term.

So… Connell makes the team, and the promising rookie Cooper definitely does as well. That leaves both our returning veterans, Rego and Lannon, in limbo. Both guys are affinity contributors, Rego still has pretty decent skills (49/54 overall by my scout) and there’s not urgency to cut either guy. But I know cut-downs are coming, and we’ll have to find six or eight victims from this team.

I think we may shop Rego, and if we can get a draft pick for him, he might go. If not, then the plan may be to cut Lannon, and go into the season with three affinity tight ends, all competing for playing time behind a FB slotted as the TE1 starter.

Preseason Underway

After a difficult training camp, we move on to the preseason, where we hope to get a few things straightened out – we have battles for playing time at several slots, and a number of young players who need a look.

Rookie QB Brent Sedor has signed his 4-year contract, and we are underway with him at the helm.

So, we start off pretty well, with the defense mustering 8 sacks en route to a dominating win over the Hudson Valley scrubs. Brent Sedor looked very sharp in to start the game, clicking on 9 of 12 passes.

On the downside, we have a serious injury to an important player – LB Steven Watkins is down for the year. He is listed out for 26 weeks, so he is a safe IR decision. He hasn’t been injury prone, either, so this is a surprise to us. It puts even more pressure onto new addition Doug McKenzie, who will now take an even more prominent role for us right away.

CB Henry Birkland is also sent to IR – his main role on the team is as position leader, where he will remain, but his services will not be needed on the field.

We are paring down from here – the preseason will hopefully not bring us any more bad news, but just help us continue to refine our view of some of these long-term players for us. I’m feeling better and better about our situation at OL and DB for the long haul, as I think we may have some decent young players who can stay with us for a long time. If we can keep our veteran mix together along the front seven, and add some skill position players in the next couple of years, we might have a pretty reasonable formula going forward from here.

QuikSand, I see your quarterbacks sharing playing time in this first game of the season, but also noticed it in previous seasons. I probably missed the big explaination of the strategy behind it. Is there any particular reason for giving both Sedor and Ross time to play, or was the last game just the effect of pulling the starter after taking a big lead (even though it was in the second quarter)? if you care to share that tiny bit of info, of course.

Well, this is just preseason, so shared playing time seems to be unavoidable. For this game, Sedor was in the top spot and started the game with playing time set to 4, while Ross came in and got even more work. I plan to reverse their roles for the rest of preseason, if that means getting Sedor the bulk of the playing time (which has been my experience).

As for the regular season, I'm still up in the air. Losing one more top-quality defensive player dims my hopes for this year a bit, and with every incremental loss of confidence I become more likely to send Sedor in as our starter right away (or close to it). I don't want to flush this season away, as I think we have a shot to contend -- but developing Sedor is clearly our top priority. We have a mentor, and an opportunity to start the young QB (who doesn't look too bad, really) so there's a compelling argument to give up a win or four this year if it means setting our course with him right away.

As for last season, we had a bit of a longshot prospect in as our starter, with a washed-up veteran (whose contract forced a release anyway) as our other option (with Ross injured and out). So, I was giving minimal playing time (set to 1) to the starter, calling for the backup to get used in every game, which suited my preferencers okay, mostly to see whether the young QB was going to develop enough to remain part of our long term plans. He didn't show much on the field, and he is no longer on the roster.

Whew! Just finished reading the whole thread!

I love your moves this past off-season -- don't really see how it could have gone much better.

Just curious -- were you going to get that #1 overall pretty much no matter what, or was the deal you made pretty much your limit in terms of what to give up?

Ugh. Slam in my face. Proves me right for not reading that well.

The rest of the explaination sounds all reasonable. Even with the young quarterback (Biddle, right?), who you eventually released. It's still interesting to see how sometimes teams decide to not 'rush' a first round pick into the starting lineup. Especially the approach to keep your rookie on the bench until the game is halfway done.

Well, there were players I would have been very happy to land with my two early picks, so I could have made peace with the idea of landing two good players at less critical positions... but in retrospect, it's probably good that I did move up, as I think I would have been disappointed with the players who were there at 1.8 and 1.11.

So, I was indeed near my limit with that deal. Earlier, I was all but ready to settle for two early picks when the logjam broke for 1.1... and I'm glad it worked out there.

Brent Sedor is again very, very sharp for us (this time playing the majority of snaps in relief duty) and we get quite a day from rookie wideout Howie Hudson – playing as if his job depended on it (which it likely does).

No major new injuries this week, fortunately. So, not much to report, overall.

Focus on: Wide Receiver

For as long as we have fielded a team, we have happily spread three or four wide receivers across the field, to make best use of our roster’s strengths. We started out with WR Mark Jackson and Justin Berkey as the central players in this scheme, with Marcus Meneses as the valuable slot receiver in our base package. Success has been intermediate – our offense has usually been in the top half of the league (by my reckoning) but rarely in the very top region.

Now, we have a changing of the guard, it seems. Justin Berkey is still here, but in his 11th season, he is clearly in decline to some degree. Mark Jackson was injured badly two seasons ago, and unable to recover – instead hobbled off to an unceremonious retirement. And Marcus Meneses signed a deal to play in Shreveport this season, leaving only one of the original foundation players still standing here in Chesapeake.

So, what to do? Well, this year, Justin Berkey remains our top option on paper, a solid veteran slotted as #1 on the flanker depth chart, with no serious worries behind him there -- Jake Madison is a reserve-caliber guy with some return skills, and has no greater ambitions than that, I think, and Rookie Howie Hudson is a nice return option and a deep reserve, but we have no reason to believe he has a higher ceiling than “fill-in” player.

For the last two seasons, veteran Jimmy Castellano has increased his role in our offense – he’s a guy with solid ratings in nearly everything, but one void in the worst place: route running. In two seasons starting with us, Castellano hauled in 57% of the passes thrown his way for about 13 yards per reception – decent, but not extraordinary numbers by any count.

The new player in the picture is third year wideout Danny Napiecek, oddly released by Norwich prior to this season, and signed to play in Chesapeake as a free agent. Napiecek is a natural split end, so the obvious place for him to contend is for Castellano’s job. Napiecek is basicaly Castellano’s opposite (for players of roughly the same overall scout rating) – he rates 64/72 in route running, and has pedestrian ratings in the 25-45 range for most everything else. So, he will have a shot (and after a strong preseason, maybe a good one) to step into a starting role for us at the split end position, and quite possibly end up the year with more catches than anyone else at WR.

The ideal situation for next year would be to bring aboard a promising rookie to develop – Castellano is a mentor at the WR position, and we have tremendous affinities at the position (every possible player has one) so the stage is set for a major investment there, a target to bring along with young QB Sedor. As for this year, we will continue to use Berkey (the franchise career leader, and in the league top ten all-time in receiving yards) and see what we have in Castellano and Napiecek, but like most of this team, we’ll have one eye looking down the road.

I always liked Castellano... he seems to be a perfect fit for the #3 receiver spot. I believe that's the role he filled for our moderately successful Vegas teams.

So, Who’s Going to Make the Team?

Halfway through our pretend games, I need to start thinking about the final roster we’ll carry into the season. I have a pretty good idea… here’s the roster grid that I keep this time of year to help me count heads:

Code:
FORECASTED DEPTH CHART Bubble total active QB Ross Sedor Beach 3 3 RB Briner Criswell Lee 3 2 FB Wunderlich Emerson 2 2 TE Rego Cooper Connell Lannon 3 2 WR Berkey Castellano Napiecek Madison Hudson Worcester 5 4 C Houtz Turnbull Lambeau 3 2 G Saladino Schmit Brandon Olechowski Shaffer (IR) Castillo 5 3 T Tilton Boyd Kolodzik Burns 4 3 P and K Embry Everhart 2 2 DE Hall Kleinsasser Linquist Kershner 4 4 DT Santos Shah Bradham(IR) 3 2 ILB McKenzie Wiseman Dennis Watkins (IR) 4 3 OLB Kuykendall Galvan Shepard 4 3 CB Raab Nave Scanlon Padgett Winters Webb Birkland(IR) 7 5 S Carr Schwantz Vesser McCartney Kettler 4 3 Red text - in danger of being released Italics - rookie player Total Slots: 56 43 Bold text - predicted starter Players on IR: 4 Net Roster 52 43

If this holds true, then right now I basically have one open job remaining. I don’t see any of the guys I have tagged as keepers being released, so the only way that list expands is by injury (putting a reserve player onto IR).

The guys who are competing for that last roster spot are basically:

Veteran S Chappy Kettler will again have no role on our defense, but he’s been with us since the start, is an affinity guy, a mentor, and could play if needed. Tough to just cast off a guy like this – but this is probably the third year he’s been on the bubble like this. Hard to see him being on the team in, say, three more seasons when we expect to be putting it all together – so why should he stay now?

6th year TE [b]Clay Lannon[/i] has been with us forever, has developed slowly but surely, plays special teams and a little bit in the passing game. Trouble is, URFA TE Robert Cooper is already a better player, and the arrow is up for him – leaving Lannon, at best, our third TE option. Again – how does this guy help us in three years?

2nd year RG Tank Castillo is a nice prospect, has developed a little, but he’d probably end up as our 12th offensive lineman. Tough to see him getting adequate time to develop, especially with no mentor and no active spot for him anyway.

At this point… I don’t think there is a compelling player on our roster for that last slot. Really, what we need is a solid OLB who could give us a little reserve time at LB or DE… since we are perilously thin at both positions. Right now, I am unmoved by the options available, but that’s what we need to really patch by for this season.

Up in the air so far… but we’ll be watching the waiver wire as well as our own roster.

So, we get a pretty solid effort from young Brent Sedor, but looking a bit more like a rookie than before, with a few mistakes along the way. WR Hudson and Napiecek are continuing to shine, and both are looking like they will be able to make a contribution this year.

WR Jake Madison has a cold, and this is a chance to put him onto IR for the year, deliciously enough. The question is whether we need him this year – or are we better off using an extra roster spot on someone else? Madison’s main contribution was to be in punt returning, and Howie Hudson can step into that role right away, and do okay. It would be a cold-hearted thing to do, I think, but if it lets us keep one more promising player, it may be worth it.

Let me take a moment to explain what a monster addition DE Chuck Linquist is to this team. He leads the defense in tackles, playing from the DT position, and he ought to be a solid, solid foundation for our run defense this year. Indeed, he may be one of the finest human beings to suit up for this franchise, and I mean no disrespect to the fine players who preceded him. Chuck Linquist, Great American.

They were able to grind it out pretty well against us, and we come up short – Sedor is making mistakes, but still showing pretty good accuracy overall for a young QB.

On the injury front: nothing too serious. S Brett Vesser is down, and he might get a ticket to the IR as a result. So, we will have to do our pare-down without the aid of a lot of fringe players with trifling injuries.

The cutdown victims:

RB Courtney Criswell
TE Sedrick Ford
C Terrell Dauber
WR Dave Worcester

We are ready to go for the season opener – this will be a new look for us, with more balance on offense, a new bright light at QB, and a lot of mysteries most everywhere else along the roster.

One last personnel move…

As opening day approaches, we get interest in CB John Raab, our 12th year mentor and starter. I had dangled him through the offseason, and when division rival Hollywood suffered another in its string of injuries, they finally came around.

SCA receives:
CHE 2nd next yr
CB John Raab

CHE receives:
SCA 1st next yr

So, we lock up a third pick in next year’s first round, as our efforts to rebuild while still on our feet continue. With Raab gone, we will be looking at our younger DBs to take an increased role in the defense, with William Padgett now almost certainly locked in as a starter from here on out.

We pursue and sign veteran free agent CB Gilbert Threlkeld – he’s not the solid player that Raab was, but he helps out as a mentor and affinity guy, so we replace a good deal of Raab’s long term value there.

And we are ready to send out the team for our opener – on the road at defending division champs Portland.

Week 1: Chesapeake at Portland

Portland is the defending division champion, and we are in some midst of rebuilding – so there’s little expectation here. We will run a more conservative offense than our norm, as we start out young QB Brent Sedor right away. Looking at my roster, especially along the defensive front, I’m just unconvinced that we are anything more than a marginal playoff threat if things go well this year, so we will be focusing much more on getting young players working together and developing – with hopes that we can acquit ourselves okay this year, and be in better shape for the years beyond. We’re not tanking – we still will be fielding a pretty solid team, but we might be effectively dropping a win or two by focusing on younger players where it’s reasonable for our longer term future.

So, we get a fairly predictable result here – we are dominated and held in check by Portland, and come up well short in this game. Sedor is okay, no big mistakes, but didn’t really get a lot of help from the running game or underneath play. I may need to get to work tweaking this offense more, to see what we might be able to get working better to help out our young QB.

No major injuries, but we might be working on the game plan a bit in the week(s) ahead.

For give me for the lack of recent updates -- our organization has recently acquired a very, very promising young prospect, and we've been focusing much of our attention there.

For now, suffice it to say that the Chili Dogs have managed to peel off two wins to get to 2-1, young Brent Sedor has his first "4th quarter heroics" to his credit, and we are playing pretty well despite the injuries that ave hit us pretty hard.

And so, we stand at 3-1 this season, following a BIG win on the road at league power Hell Creek. Right now, I think newfound MLB Doug McKenzie is most certainly our team MVP, as the defensive front talent continues to disintegrate around him. Travis Kuykendall, our shining young star at SLB, has gone down with a season-ending and career-threatening injury, so we are now down to just Mckenzie and the recently recovered Galvan, with a patch-up job at the other LB slot (we’re actually using special teamer D.J. Dennis there, which is a first for him).

So, through four games, here is the team snapshot:

This is a very different Chesapeake team than we have seen I the past – so far, our m.o. has been to run the ball, stop the run, and win the turnover battle. Brent Sedor is coming along fine, and with only one pick in four games, has executed the plan very nicely. DE Cornelius Kleinsasser deserves a shout out, as he has been productive getting his first regular action after years on our bench.

Off to a great start, and we are fishing for a little help at LB before the trade deadline.

Need Help at Linebacker? Call on the Captain!

Chesapeake has signed veteran free agent linebacker Captain Bonham, who is expected to shore up the defensive front following a number of injuries. Initially, I think Bonham will be slotted in as our starter at the weak side slot – as we have moves right back to the 4-3 front following the season ending injuries to two LB starters. Bonham is pretty solid against the run (scouted at 51/62) and that is probably his best position on the field. We may shift to using nickel coverage a bit more now, as I think we have better overall personnel on the field using S Jeff McCartney than Bonham, but both will see significant time from here on out, I suspect.

We had dangled some interest in the trade “market” but Bonham satisifes our immediate needs, and the price is right – he’s aboard for the familiar veteran minsal deal.

Week 5: State College (1-3) at Chesapeake (3-1)

Well, now that we have pulled off one significant upset, and picked up one player with a purely “help now” mentality, we can start speculating about this season ahead. Is this a playoff team? For me, the real debate had really been whether we’d be competitive for the playoffs at all… now we’re looking for signs as to whether we’re really a solid team. This week, we host State College, and will be looking for signs that we can play well enough to put a game away (thus far missing from our equation). We’ll do it basically without FB Bill Wunderlich, but we have FB Charles Emerson and our reserve TE players led by rookie Robert Cooper looking to pick up the slack for him.

Well, we work a decent underneath attack, and the running game is okay, but we give up way too much through the air to them, and get beaten in a game we figured to win at home. Placing us back at 3-2, this also may well send a signal that despite the ability to win a few games here and there, this is not a truly consistent team right now – and that the wins we get we’ll have to earn.

Brent Sedor, while not taking many real shots downfield, has continued to play pretty well – here he is credited with only two “bad throws” in 37 attempts. He also appears to be pretty dangerous when pushed from the pocket – he’s listed as a short pass style of guy, but so far in five games he’s posted a pretty healthy 168 yards on the ground. One more thing for opposing defenses to watch.

Dissapointing loss...Seder's legs have been more effective than his arm, but as young he is, you needn't worry. Losing home games that you should win is potentially ominous.

Nice dynasty, though. I just started reading, and I will definitely be keeping up with it.

Focus on: Chili Dogs Ground Game

In past years, our team has consistently been pass-first. This year, with some shifting of our overall talent on field, we are looking to run a bit more often. After five games, I wanted to have a look (so far) at our new investment – a running game.

Code:
Rushing Statistics Player Pos Team GP GS Att Yards Avg Lg TD Briner, Bill RB CHE 5 5 77 358 4.64 41 2 Sedor, Brent QB CHE 5 5 29 168 5.79 19 0 Wunderlich, Bill FB CHE 5 4 23 95 4.13 15 1 Emerson, Charles FB CHE 5 4 7 15 2.14 7 0

First off, here are the raw stats, by ball carrier. Offseason acquisition Bill Briner was brought in to be our main workhorse back on first down, and so far, so good. A 4.6 average per carry is plenty solid. Wunderlich, who I’m using as a sort of H-back (starting at TE, but used as a specialty RB and #2 on the RB depth chart), is getting a fair number of carries as well, and while not explosive, he’s doing fine.

Looking a level deeper, I want to see the OL performance, which I believe is pretty important given our overall talent level in this area:

Code:
Blocking Statistics Player Pos Team GP GS KRB KRO BPct SkA PPly SPct RPly OPct Turnbull, Winston C CHE 5 5 8 24 33.3 3 162 1.8 130 18.4 Saladino, Bobby G CHE 5 3 7 15 46.6 0 101 0.0 72 20.8 Schmit, Gus G CHE 5 5 7 14 50.0 3 178 1.6 136 10.2 Tilton, Stanley T CHE 5 5 5 22 22.7 0 178 0.0 136 16.1 Wunderlich, Bill FB CHE 5 4 4 8 50.0 0 133 0.0 104 7.6 Emerson, Charles FB CHE 5 4 4 5 80.0 1 81 1.2 77 6.4 Burns, Jerry T CHE 5 5 3 10 30.0 2 172 1.1 129 7.7 Brandon, Marvin G CHE 5 2 2 9 22.2 1 83 1.2 70 12.8 Houtz, John C CHE 5 0 1 1 100.0 0 16 0.0 7 14.2 Cooper, Robert TE CHE 5 2 1 3 33.3 0 99 0.0 68 4.4

Well, from a roster management perspective, my only real decision was to go with young Winston Turnbull as our starter at C – he’s a run-blocking guy, ahead of veteran group leader John Houtz, who is primarily a pass blocker. So far, Turnbull has been okay, and we will hope to develop him with a good season here. Veteran free agent Bobby Saladino has been solid starting at the LG slot, and young Gus Schmit is coming along at the RG slot, mostly.

We are paying Stanley Tilton a lot of money, and he has easily the best “bars” of anyone in this group, but once again we don’t seem to be getting star-caliber results from him. Oh, well. Rookie Jerry Burns has potential to grow, and so far we’re not running a lot behind him at the RT slot, where I think he will be a long term fixture.

As it is, as I’m thinking longer-term about this team, the real complexion of our line is quite a bit different than I am used to. Just considering the guys I expect to be around a while, here’s what we have:

Code:
Player Pos Yr RunBl PassBl RB/PB ratio Turnbull, Winston C 2 60/80 14/19 0.81 / 0.81 Schmit, Gus G 2 28/45 46/67 0.38 / 0.40 Burns, Jerry T 1 42/63 21/37 0.67 / 0.63 Brandon, Marvin G 2 22/54 26/75 0.46 / 0.42 Lambeau, Wendell C 2 23/29 23/44 0.50 / 0.40 Olechowski, Bennie G 2 13/46 7/28 0.65 / 0.62 Castillo, Tank G 2 24/51 18/57 0.60 / 0.47 Tilton, Stanley T 5 62/65 61/61 0.51 / 0.52 Kolodzik, Horace T 5 27/40 27/41 0.50 / 0.49

That’s a lot of guys who are pretty balanced – not at all like the line we had in place just a couple years ago (where most guys would have had a ratio in the 0.2-0.4 range, I’d guess). If we eventually drift back toward a pass-happy attack, we may have a mismatch on our hands – but having a solid, balanced LT and two pass-blocking guards shouldn’t be too bad.

Quik, just curious...what do you mean by RB/PB ratio, and where do you derive those numbers from?

Also, how has Sedor's future development (ratings) come along so far?

Week 6: Chesapeake (3-2) at South Carolina (4-1)

Pretty big divisional game – a win on the road here, and we are back as a factor in the division race. A loss, which seems fairly likely, and we are two games behind the second place team. It’s early to make declarations, but that would be tough to overcome with a team that is likely to be pretty unpredictable.

Well, we are in the game the whole way, thanks to a solid defensive effort, but we end up calling at least 43 pass plays to under 20 rushes. Our top back gains 7 yards a carry, and we starve him in favor of more underneath passing. I rarely dwell on playcalling, but that is pretty frustrating.

Anyway, we have one more injury to our defensive front, as Miles Kershner is down for a month or so – he’s been a run-stopper inside for us, and the loss will be felt. This will elevate young Gabe Shah (a guy I never though would play much either) to a starting job, and will get veteran FA pickup Reuben Bean onto the field as well. Neither is that great, but we are patching holes however we can. We could really easily handle a loss at DB or OL, but oh no, it has to be the defensive front again.

So, at 3-3 we share the division basement with Dodge City, but are not in complete disarray. We will see H-back Bill Wunderlich and WR Jimmy Castellano return to the lineup this coming week, so perhaps we can add a little bit to our offensive punch. I remain amazed that our beat-up defensive front is still rated highly against the run, allowing only 3.6 yards per carry (5th best in the league).

The RB/PB ratio is just the share of his total ratings in those two catgeories attributed to run blocking. The formula I'm using is:

Ratio = RB / (RB + PB)

So, for Turnbull, with his current ratings, it's

Ratio = 60 / (60 + 14) = 0.81

(meaning that 81% of his visiable skill is in run blocking, making him a pretty one-dimensional offensive lineman)

For each guy I calculated this twoce, based on current ratings then based on future ratings. For the most part, the two were pretty consistent.

To me, it's just a convenient way to quantify what I already know -- my line is more balanced than ever, and that helps to explain why we are probably running better than ever, in some part. I have long been of the mind (unproven, completely admittedly) that this ratio is itself important -- that for some reason an OL rated 60RB/20PB will be more effective as a run blocker than a guy rated 60RB/60PB. I have nothing but anecdotes to back that up, but it's at least slightly on my mind as I consider my OL plan.

As for Sedor, my scout rates him at 39/87 overall after six starts. My scout had him at 22/87 coming ouut of training camp, so his development is coming along quite nicely. I don't think that a player really sees movement in his future potential except for specific points in the year -- and the next one isn't until next season, I believe. I'll be watching closely, but I suspect that he will indeed reach most of that potential, and will eventually be a very well-developed star-caliber passer. Our club's future almost certainly hinges on it.

Week 7: Portland (5-0) at Chesapeake (3-3)

After a surprising run to a 3-1 record, we have settled back to earth a bit, and are looking once again like a pretty middling team building toward a (hopefully) brighter future. Against the unbeaten division leaders, this doesn’t look like an easy spot to get things turned back around, I fear.

Well – a pretty good game, all told. We led at the half and through three quarters, we didn’t make any big mistakes, but just got ground down by a better team in the end. Portland did pretty much nail down our running game, which is disappointing, and they passed on us very efficiently all day – so there were weak spots, to be sure. But not an awful showing. Brent Sedor manages to get through the whole game without being tagged with a single “bad throw,” which is nice to see for a young gun.

LB Doug McKenzie continues to put up monster numbers for us in the middle linebacker spot, as he has clearly become the real centerpiece to this defense, in very short order. But no pressure on their QB makes things awfully tough for the secondary, and their QB had all day to get his job done.

Now RB Bill Briner is hurt, and we will probably slot in FB Bill Wunderlich as our main ball carrier for a couple of games. He ought to do okay, but he won’t have the breakaway threat we got from Briner (a bit). We may tweak the offense a bit for the next few weeks, but I don’t expect to see a totally different team out there.

Week 8: Chesapeake (3-4) at Madison (2-4)

Now that we have fallen below .500 for the year so far, we have shed any illusions that might have been creeping up when we pulled off a nice upset to stand at 3-1. I still like this team a bit, but I recognize that we have work to do ahead. On the road against a team also struggling, I don’t see this as a litmus test, but it’s hopefully a winnable game for us.

It’s tough not to be happy with the defensive effort here, as new additional Linquist and McKenzie anchored a pretty stout front against a run-committed team. But we couldn’t really get anything going on our own, and this ended up being a pretty tough one to watch, I’d hazard.

DEs Chuck Linquist and Miles Kershner, both starters for us at DT, are now added to the injured list. This is getting to the point of absurdity, though these two, mercifully, are only for a few weeks. I have no idea who will be suiting up for us in the next couple of weeks, but it’s getting rather silly. I suspect we will have to move star DE Alvin Hall to play inside, and we’ll patch up the DE spots with whatever we have lying around.

So, with eight games in the bag, here’s the season synopsis:

It’s just odd to me that despite the ravaging we have suffered along the defensive front, we remain among the very best teams in the league against the run – holding foes to only 3.6 yards per carry. I am out of superlatives for LB McKenzie, but he’s on pace for a truly frightening tackle total, in part enhanced by the absence of much talent around him. DE Cornelius Kleinsasser, an original Chili Dog from the 2003 season, is finally getting his chance to shine, and looks like a solid player for us, actually. Our young secodnary is a weakness (though I continue to like many of these guys) as nobody has a PDPct rating over 2 on the season.

WR Danny Napiecek has been the standout among our passing offense, as young Brent Sedor avoids making too many mistakes, but also hasn’t been revving the engines all that much. Napiecek might well be on his way to cementing a starting job for this team for the years ahead – he’s a pretty good fit anyway, and this season he’s looking like our best guy out there by far.

This isn’t an awful team, but we aren’t likely to get back to .500 for the season, I don’t suspect.

Young DBs – Half-Season Check

We have two very young players who have been starting all season for us in the secondary – CB Herman Padgett (pick 3.1 last year) and S Doug Schwantz (pick 2.32 this year). Both are guys I am basically penciling in as long-term starters, so I have an interest in their development as well as their play on-field. How’s it going so far?

CB Padgett, 2nd year

Ratings when drafted: 28/52
Ratings currently: 49/54
Run Defense: 74
BNR Defense: 75/82
Interceptions: 39/40

Pass Plays: 186
Passes Caught: 16
Passes Defensed: 2
Passes Intercepted: 0
PDPCt Rating: 18.1

SS Schwantz, 1st year

Ratings when drafted: 27/49
Ratings currently: 35/53
Run Defense: 20/35
BNR Defense: 66/70
Interceptions: 36/63

Pass Plays: 202
Passes Caught: 22
Passes Defensed: 7
Passes Intercepted: 0
PDPCt Rating: 18.9

So, neither guys is exactly a sterling asset on the field right now, but both guys are developing pretty well. If I had my druthers, I might switch their run defense abilities, as I like Padgett out on the wing, but wish Schwantz had a little more power against the run. Both guys fit into our plans just fine, though, and we will keep it up – both are active and mentored this season, which ought to maximize their respective development progress.

Wow, where to start? We lead 17-7 at the half, but only hand the ball off 8 times the whole game? Really? And then our defense gives out on us late in the game, allowing a prototype fourth quarter comeback at home, to give away the game – great. Oh, well.

Sedor has a good game – sacked six times and picked off twice, he was not marked down for a single “bad throw” all day. I’m not sure that him throwing 38 times in a game we were leading is the best recipe for success, but that was a pretty solid effort for him, all told.

I’m inclined to lay the blame for this tough loss at the feet of our offensive line – zero key run blocks, six sacks allowed, and a close loss in a home game. Rough.

Not mush to add here – we’ll keep at it, with Bill Briner back in the fold next week, and try to get back on track. From 3-1 to 3-6 is a pretty steep drop, but we know that this isn’t the target season in “the plan.”

Week 10: Dodge City (5-4) at Chesapeake (3-6)

We still consider Dodge City our main “rival,” even though at the moment it’s Portland who rules the division roost. DGC has been the team who has factored into our intra-division figuring the most over time, and they merit special attention for each renewal. They used to be a one-dimensional offense, running as their first and last option, but now are more balanced with some real talent at the WR slots. While we are last in the division, and probably out of playoff consideration, it’s always nice to poke a hole in someone else’s boat if you can.

So, a pretty even game overall, but we won the turnover battle by a wide margin, and got away with a win. Our defense held the line for the whole second half, and that made the real difference. The offense didn’t lose the game, and the defense basically won it for us. Hats off to real game MVP safety/nickelback Ferdy Nave, a guy I totally love for some odd reason.

I also like a switch I have made – I have slotted SS Mark Carr in as our starting weak-side linebacker. He’s decent (not great) against the run, and is ok to play there, and having him there instead of a very weak true OLB (like Captain Bonham) just seems better to me. So, when we are in our base 3-4, we will have him playing in a LB slot, and when we drop back into nickel coverage, he will still see some time in a safety role. For a pretty solid player, this seems like a decent slot for him, especially with out stock of true LBs so depleted.

So, a pretty solid win, and another pretty good effort by our defense, again exceeding my expectations. We are now the #1 defense in rushing yards per play (the best indicator, I think) in the league. We have had that badge before, even this late in a season, but it has always been with exemplary personnel there to make it clear why we were so strong. Now, we lack that foundation – with four key guys from our traditional front seven just gone – but are still reaping the spoils of a commitment to stop the run.

Week 11: We Rested

With the week off, we don’t have too much to report. We did make one free agent signing, picking up rookie LB Nick Winslett, who might see some tangential playing time for us down the road. What this amounts to, really, is a concession that we’re not going to see LB Stephen Watkins the rest of this year. He joins LB Travis Kuykendall and DT Eugene Bradham as the big questions marks for nest season – can these guys come back from very serious injuries and continue to play productively? Kuykendall was a central figure in my defensive planning, but all three guys are very good players. As we’re trying to build this team for the future, it’s very tough to just shed talent under any circumstances.

Well, it wasn’t pretty, but it’s a win. Tough to get all that excited about winning to get to 5-6, but you do what you can.

Sedor is charged with one bad throw in 38 attempts – that’s great. LB McKenzie is again the focal point of the defense, posting another huge day of tackles. He is making 21% of our defensive tackles, which is a crazy number, and is in a two way race for the league lead in that department so far. He does have more than twice as many solo tackles as anyone else on the team.

On the day, we held them to 3.4 yards per carry – and that number is itself inflated by their QB getting 37 of those yards – their backs went 18 for 50 yards. Our run defense continues to be very effective. DE Alvin Hall is downed with an injury, so we will just keep patching up and hoping for the best up front.

Another road game against a team we match up with fairly well. We expect a defensive-oriented, controlled effort, and I think we have a reasonable chance to get another win here.

Well, not the script I had imagined (or had pursued vie the gameplan) but not a bad result. Sedor cracks the 300 yard mark for the first time, and he is tallied with only one “bad throw” in 34 attempts, en route to a pretty good day, the two picks notwithstanding.

So, we get to 6-6 on the season. Here are the standings for some context:

We are technically not out of the race, but it’s a tough road ahead, and we remain a last place team. It’s quite possible that our division sends both wild cards from our conference… and we are only one game behind the current wild card tier, so that’s not so bad. One more win, and we can start thinking about what it would take to get in this year.

The injury bug has hit our CB position, as we have lost Billy Joe Scanlon and Dixon Webb from our rotation of players there. We’ll patch up, as usual, and will likely see more playing time for the venerable Mark Carr.

Week 14: Fall River (3-9) at Chesapeake (6-6)

Well, we are back at home, facing off against a rebuilding team we nominally outmatch. Last week, my declaration was “one more win, and we can start thinking about what it would take to get in [to the playoffs] this year.” Well, this certainly seems like the spot to do it, gang.

We will hope to see the team revert back to the ground game more this week, as everyone is healthy there and it’s probably our best shot.

Well, I am delighted to see us rack up over 200 yards on the ground, and put together another pretty solid win. The offense was again pretty mistake-free, and the defense played well enough to keep us in command. The real key to the game for us, I think, was the offensive line – we tallied 12 key run blocks on the day, and didn’t allow a single sack. That’s about the best day I’ve seen from this group of young blockers.

A couple “yeah, but” things here. RB Bill Briner is hurt, and will miss a couple games (again). And it seems that my file submitted was incorrect somehow, as my team went under limited AI control – much to my chagrin. So, we will have to do a couple of repair moves to try to get us back where I want us.

LB Doug McKenzie will miss a game, bad news for his quest to lead the league in tackles. Our move to a 3-4 defense (forced by injury) had really spelled the end of that thought anyway, I think, but with a week on the bench it’s all but over there. I’m not one for individual stats (and I generally think that the tackles stat is probably the most overrated in the FOF game) but it had been pretty interesting to see one guy gobble up such a huge share of our tackles.

Playoff Outlook

So, here are the relevant standings for the conference – as we commence with our promised look at the playoff situation:

Code:
NC North W L T Pct PF PA Conf Div Norwich 10 3 0 .769 288 256 7-3 3-1 Calverton 7 6 0 .538 339 260 6-4 2-2 NC South W L T Pct PF PA Conf Div Hell Creek 10 3 0 .769 334 196 8-2 4-0 NC East W L T Pct PF PA Conf Div Portland 8 5 0 .615 308 271 7-3 3-1 South Carolina 8 5 0 .615 317 253 5-5 1-3 Chesapeake 7 6 0 .538 246 234 4-6 1-3 Dodge City 7 6 0 .538 261 252 6-4 3-1 NC West W L T Pct PF PA Conf Div Myrtle Beach 5 7 1 .423 209 248 4-6 3-1

There are indeed teams at 6-7 who could jump forward and claim a wind card slot, I’m sure it’s mathematically possible. But for now, here’s how I see it:

#1 and #2 seeds: Norwich and Hell Creek in some order
#3 seed: winner of East division, up for grabs
#4 seed: crappy team from the West
#5 seed: Portland/South Carolina loser has the inside track
#6 seed: Calverton has the inside track, with Week 17 likely settling DGC/CHE

Our three remaining games are all against playoff contenders, including hosting South Carolina this week, and playing at Dodge City in the finale. A 2-1 finish to put us to 9-7 could potentially be good enough to get us in… it might depend on Calverton. However, Calverton has three very winnable games in their last three, and they have the edge on us in conference record as well – so we only pass them by getting a game ahead.

The odds are, we probably need to run the table to get in, and then we’d have a chance to go and play on the road at Portland, who have already pasted us twice this year.

Another Thing for Chili Dog Fans to Be Watching…

Whole we are somewhat in the middle of a playoff run (after this week, we’ll know whether we are really in the middle, or just on the fringes), there’ one more thing to be watching for this season.

Amidst our rebuilding, and somewhat lost in the shuffle of the big trade for Brent Sedor, we did manage to pick up three first round picks for next season. Two of them – originally our own and that of South Carolina – are going to be middling picks at best, as both of our teams are amidst the playoff struggle and neither is too likely to end up worse than 8-8. So, we probably pencil in picks at slots like 20 and 25 or something like that – good enough to land a solid contributor, but probably not a major impact player unless we get lucky.

However, our trade of S David Plata also yielded the top pick from Toronto next year, and things have not gone the way that they would have hoped this season. Witness the league’s overall standings – stage bottom:

Code:
2009 Regular Season Standings W L T Pct PF PA Conf Div Washington 2 11 0 .154 192 300 2-8 0-4 Las Vegas 3 10 0 .231 180 269 1-9 0-4 Fall River 3 10 0 .231 265 349 3-7 1-3 Norman 3 10 0 .231 235 302 2-8 0-4 Toronto 3 9 1 .269 253 327 2-8 0-4 Wheeling 4 9 0 .308 196 268 4-6 2-2 Davis 4 9 0 .308 276 289 3-7 3-1 Duluth 4 9 0 .308 254 311 3-7 0-4

So, at this moment, Toronto is slotted as the #5 pick for next year’s draft. Things can certainly change in the coming weeks – but they do finish with three straight road games, and the last one of them is against Capital City, the league’s most dominating team this season. So, there’s a pretty decent chance that this pick stays in that top tier – landing us a chance at a real impact player for our club.

It’s not that I’m exactly hovering ghoulishly over the remaining games for Toronto… but it’s not that I’m totally uninterested, either. So, here are their remaining games:

Code:
at Hudson Valley (6-7) at Wheeling (4-9) at Jupiter (12-1)

This week’s game is pretty big for them – Hudson Valley has lost two in a row to probably drop out of playoff contention, and are –87 in the PF/PA comparison, so this is a winnable game for Toronto, by my reckoning.

It’s also possible that Jupiter is on cruise control by the season finale, and they might field a team of backups. We will hope not -- they only lead the race for the top seed by one game, so we’ll pin our hopes there.

Something else to watch as the season wears down. In terms of putting pieces together for this team’s future – that pick is looming as a very big building block. Especially as we get into next season and get some sense of who on this team is actually going to be able to recover from long term injuries.

Week 15: South Carolina (8-5) at Chesapeake (7-6)

This is probably the biggest week in the history of this division. Honestly. All four teams are in the playoff race, we’ve got a real chance to get three teams from this division into the playoffs, and we are all playing one another this week:

8-5 South Carolina at 7-6 Chesapeake
8-5 Portland at 7-6 Dodge City

So, here is our game – we’re without our leading rusher, but I decide to go in with a pretty conservative run-first offensive game plan anyway. We’ll hope that FBs Bill Wunderlich and Charles Emerson can carry the load for us.

Run the ball. Stop the run. Don’t give it away. Win the game. It reads like a recipe.

Great game from our defense, once again – we hold them to under 3 yards a carry on the ground, that’s great. And we did it without our man in the middle, as Doug McKenzie was out injured this week – even better. I am amazed.

Wunderlich and Emerson were great up the gut, as we just played a good, solid game on offense. Brent Sedor continues to play surprisingly un-rookie-like in his debut season, and we have now ripped off five wins in a row to turn from 3-6 also-rans right into 8-6 contenders. Heh – if the season ended today, we’d be the #5 seed in the playoffs.

And that is due, also in part, to the results from across town:

Code:
Dodge City 7 7 0 10 0 - 24 Portland 7 7 10 0 6 - 30

Not that we have anything in particular against long time hated rivals Dodge City, but our best scenario here is basically to just cede the division to Portland, and allow them to knock around one of the teams who is battling with us for the wild card slot. And that is, eventually, what we get here.

Here are the standings in the conference after this week’s games – including seeing another WC rival Calverton slip into one of three ties all in one week:

Code:
NC North W L T Pct PF PA Conf Div Norwich 11 3 0 .786 319 272 8-3 4-1 Calverton 7 6 1 .536 360 281 6-4-1 2-2-1 Ayr 6 7 1 .464 300 308 5-5-1 2-2-1 Seal Beach 5 9 0 .357 257 331 5-6 1-4 NC South W L T Pct PF PA Conf Div Hell Creek 11 3 0 .786 354 209 9-2 5-0 State College 6 8 0 .429 232 290 6-5 2-3 Madison 5 9 0 .357 206 265 5-6 2-3 Washington 3 11 0 .214 209 310 3-8 1-4 NC East W L T Pct PF PA Conf Div Portland 9 5 0 .643 338 295 8-3 4-1 Chesapeake 8 6 0 .571 267 241 5-6 2-3 South Carolina 8 6 0 .571 324 274 5-6 1-4 Dodge City 7 7 0 .500 285 282 6-5 3-2 NC West W L T Pct PF PA Conf Div Myrtle Beach 5 8 1 .393 228 268 4-7 3-2 Davis 5 9 0 .357 296 308 4-7 4-1 Wheeling 4 9 1 .321 227 299 4-6-1 2-2-1 Duluth 4 9 1 .321 285 342 3-7-1 0-4-1

So, this week basically couldn’t have gone any better for the Chili Dogs. We get a big win, and stay alive in the playoff race. All three teams we’re up against in the WC race either lost or tied, so we gain actual ground there. With two games to go, we actually control our own destiny.

And, just in case you remain interested – here is the battle for the top draft pick:

Code:
AC North W L T Pct PF PA Conf Div Las Vegas 3 11 0 .214 203 295 1-10 0-5 Fall River 3 11 0 .214 282 372 3-8 1-4 Norman 3 11 0 .214 249 346 2-9 0-5 Washington 3 11 0 .214 209 310 3-8 1-4 Toronto 3 10 1 .250 267 344 2-9 0-5 Wheeling 4 9 1 .321 227 299 4-6-1 2-2-1 Duluth 4 9 1 .321 285 342 3-7-1 0-4-1

Washington will be gravely disappointed with a win here, but the rest of the order remains unchanged – our pick (Toronto’s) stays in the 5th slot, as they lost a close game this week. The Wheeling/Duluth tie is tough to call – I don’t honestly know how these tiebreakers work out, but it’s now at least possible that Toronto could win a game and still not drop a slot.

Week 15 – just what the Doggies ordered!

Week 16: French (8-6) at Chesapeake (8-6)

Obviously a huge game for us, as we try to extend our winning streak to six games. The French Ticklers started off very strong, but have lost three of their last four games. They are a run-first team, with solid second year running back Martin Todd leading the charge. He’s gaining 4.6 yards a carry, and they ought to pose a real test for our top-rated run defense.

With Bill Briner back active, we will go with a platoon backfield, using Wunderlich and Briner in combination, and we will try to beat them at their own game. From the looks of things, I suspect we ought to be able to run on the Ticklers. That’s our game plan – try to win it in the trenches, despite an apparent talent gap in our respective offensive lines (theirs is far better than ours, it seems).

And so, we lose a squeaker here – the defense did its job quite well, but our offense was just too conservative and ineffective. A missed extra point, though? Ouch.

Thing is – the whole world just collapsed around us, too. Not only did we lose our game, but quite literally everyone else in the conference chase won their games, so we really lost a whole game to the entire field. Here are the relevant conference standings now:

Code:
NC North W L T Pct PF PA Conf Div Norwich 11 4 0 .733 325 286 8-3 4-1 Calverton 8 6 1 .567 374 291 6-4-1 2-2-1 NC South W L T Pct PF PA Conf Div Hell Creek 12 3 0 .800 378 212 9-2 5-0 NC East W L T Pct PF PA Conf Div Portland 10 5 0 .667 365 319 8-3 4-1 South Carolina 9 6 0 .600 358 295 5-6 1-4 Chesapeake 8 7 0 .533 276 251 5-6 2-3 Dodge City 8 7 0 .533 322 299 6-5 3-2 NC West W L T Pct PF PA Conf Div Myrtle Beach 6 8 1 .433 251 288 4-7 3-2

So… Portland has locked up the division already, so they are in. Four division winner slots accounted for. The rest is pretty simple, actually:

- South Carolina plays Portland in the finale, with a win they are in.

- Calverton plays Norwich, with a win, they are in.

- If either Calverton or South Carolina loses, then the winner of the Dodge City/Chesapeake game gets in*.

- If both Calverton and South Carolina lose, then South Carolina gets in as the #6 seed, behind the winner of the Dodge City/Chesapeake game who would be the #5 seed

* -- (If Dodge City wins, they swept South Carolina, and would win the head to head. If Chesapeake wins, they split head to head with South Carolina, but would have a better conference record.)

Also, in the race for the top draft picks, Toronto won their game this week, causing a shift in the standings there as well:

Code:
AC North W L T Pct PF PA Conf Div Las Vegas 3 12 0 .200 213 336 1-10 0-5 Fall River 3 12 0 .200 303 406 3-8 1-4 Norman 3 12 0 .200 266 383 2-9 0-5 Washington 4 11 0 .267 240 310 3-8 1-4 Toronto 4 10 1 .300 293 365 2-9 0-5 Wheeling 4 10 1 .300 248 325 4-6-1 2-2-1 Madison 5 10 0 .333 225 289 5-6 2-3 Davis 5 10 0 .333 306 330 4-7 4-1

A totally disastrous week for us on the field. Hard to believe a missed extra point could ultimately result in the whole thing falling apart.

All for the lack of a horseshoe nail…

Week 17: Chesapeake (8-7) at Dodge City (8-7)

Big, big game. Probably a playoff berth for the winner, and the loser is definitely out. Big game, and I’m pretty excited to be playing our long-time rivals Dodge City with so much on the line. While we are a team nominally in a rebuilding effort, we have ridden a strong defensive effort and a decidedly un-rookie-like season from Brent Sedor to a place right in contention for a wild card berth.

Here goes.

So, we end up just barely on the outside, with an 8-8 record. It’s pretty disappointing to land there after just two weeks ago being at 8-6 and very much in control of our own destiny – but the last two weeks saw pretty much everything go wrong. We only lost the games by close margins, so it’s not like we fell completely apart, but everything else that could go wrong did go wrong, and we end up as, I believe, the #8 team in the conference at season’s end.

Incidentally, Toronto also won their last game, as (I’m guessing) Jupiter had a meaningless game – so that even hurts our draft position for next year’s draft – Toronto’s pick will be either #7 or #8 overall. Man, the wheels really fell off the Chesapeake wagon here.

Alas – a good season all told, and a lot of hope for the future. Much more post-season stats and so forth to come…

Congratulations to the rest of our division, all of whom are in the postseason!

Last season, I wrapped up with a fairly detailed position-by-position analysis of who played well enough to stay around into and through the projected “rebuilding.” I pretty much scrapped most of that when I got into the real decision-making, but it was an entertaining exercise, to some degree. I am hoping to do something along similar lines this year.

So, I tend to look at my yards per play as the most solid underlying indicators of success on the field. I know that third downs and turnovers and the like are important – but to me, yards per play is a pretty good indicator of how good the team truly is. Here’s that nutshell, then:

Code:
Chesapeake Chili Dogs Team Rank Yards Per Carry 4.34 7 Yards Per Attempt 6.07 29 Opponents Team Rank Yards Per Carry 3.61 1 Yards Per Attempt 7.32 19

There it is. We developed a pretty effective ground game this year, with Bill Briner and Bill Wunderlich as the most talented running backs this team has seen. I think the yards per carry stat tends to be a little inflated when you have an effective running QB (as we do in Sedor, who posted 545 yards and a 5.6 average) but each RB was around 4.0 ypc, which is pretty good – and leaps and bound ahead of the 3.5 slot where our top two backs were performing last year.

Our passing game was pretty close to the vest, as I opted to use a lot more 2 TE formations this year than we ever have before. That was for many reasons, but it served to keep a lot of the passing underneath and safe, all told. (Might not be a bad recipe for a young QB in any event) So, the yards per attempt were pretty low – I am not shocked by this. At the halfway point, though, this was at 5.34 – so getting it up to over 6 by season’s end showed that we were getting more effective in the passing game as the season wore on, and as Sedor continued to get comfortable. Hopefully, the arrow is pointing up.

On defense, I simply can’t believe how well our defensive front played against the run. DE Alvin Hall is a star-caliber player still, but the rest are guys who would be considered fill-in caliber by most teams. A guy like DE Chuck Linquist, a relative afterthought pickup for us, probably turned out to be a huge acquisition for us – we gave up getting some added pass pressure from him at his DT slot, but he posted 51+23 tackles and was in on nearly 10% of the tackles when he was on the field – good stats for a 4-3 DT. MLB Doug McKenzie was clearly a huge signing, and ended up anchoring the LB corps that we thought was a team strength until injuries rendered us asunder. We stayed consistent, and ended up #1 in the league in yards per carry allowed – unreal.
The pass defense was pretty unremarkable, and I’m not shocked by that. Not a single double-digit “passes defensed” guy on the team which is disappointing. We had an average pass rush, with 31 sacks, and have young guys playing key roles in the secondary – so it’s tough to expect much better than average. I hade slightly higher hopes for CB Padgett and S Jeff McCartney, both of whom I consider to be part of my long-term planning back there. Alas – 19th isn’t bad, and we can hopefully build on that as we keep this unit together a while (I hope).

So, I am quite happy at the QB position, really. Sedor is developing rapidly and had a great rookie year by my count. His ypa was a shade lower than what we got from the veterans who played last year, but there’ no reason to think it will ever be this low again. Ross is a solid reserve and fits in well with the team, and Beach is a cheap and stable mentor for Sedor. Very happy here.

Well, once again, I am very happy with the position, all told. Briner is pretty old, but unless he completely falls apart, he ought to be a solid enough starter for us for next season. That’s good. Wunderlich is a great utility guy – he’ll probably start again at TE but get time at HB and FB – and he’s capable of taking over the HB1 duties as needed – good to have in reserve. I like Emerson, who has settled into his reserve role. Adding a nice young RB to the mix would be welcome, but it’s not a pressing immediate need.

Well, Clyde Rego is a perfect guy for this team, really – cheap, affinity guy, adds to our cohesion as a multi-year player, and can start when needed. Good value player for us. I remain optimistic about young Robert Cooper, and want to get him onto the field, where I think he can develop – Joel Connell is an affinity lynchpin, but I’d love to bring aboard a mentor for Cooper, if I can do so.

Happy here – using FB Wunderlich in the rotation makes me very pleased to use a 2TE system. We’ll watch Cooper for signs of life.

So, as I sort of suspected, it was young Danny Napiecek who broke through and put together the best season among our wideouts, after wresting the starting split end job from Castellano. Interestingly, the thoroughly un-talented Jake Madison was substantially better as a starter at flanker than was veteran Justin Berkey. The ideal situation going forward would be that we get Castellano and Berkey to both re-negotiate down after fairly soft seasons, and we bring back the main four guys next year, hopefully with an addition or two for the future.

A place we will be looking for an addition or two – either an impact guy with an early pick (or FA signing) or probably more likely a role player addition who’d fit in our system.

I can’t say that I am thrilled with the performance this season from this group – our starters ended up under 30% in key run blocking, which is a bit too low I think. But I do like the way this is heading – I think we are going to end up with a pretty solid starting group here, without massive investment. Actually, left tackle Tilton look great in the red bars, but he has yet to really put together a serious star-caliber season for us at left tackle, despite his nominal ability. We will certainly endeavor to re-sign Turnbull, Schmidt, and Brandon and expect all three to come back and start for us, hopefully for years to come. Renegotiating John Houtz down to a fair salary figure is essential, but assuming we do, we have flexibility here – veterans like Kolodzik and Saladino can cit as backups behind our developing youngsters, or can be trade bait as both guys are pretty solid, in my view.

We could even entertain the notion of trading away Stanley Tilton – on the grounds that a guy like Kolodzik might be able to give us comparably mediocre stats at the left tackle spot for a fourth of the cost.

This is an area where we could use a young infusion of talent, for certain. I cannot at all be disappointed with the results from this season – we were average in the pass rush, despite selling out against the run to be the league’s toughest run defense (in yards per carry). Assuming we have no meaningful additions, we would probably go with the rotation that worked well this season – Hall and Kleinsasser starting on the outside and playing full time, Chuck Linquist as a full time run stopper inside, and then a rotation of perhaps Kershner and Shah at the other DT slot.

That assumes that when we finally see the post-injury Eugene Bradham, it will regrettably be a guy not worth keeping. If he’s even a substantial fraction of his old self, we will have a tough call to make there. He has been very productive when healthy, but after two serious injuries, I have to think he’s done – even if his ratings look okay, we won’t be able to rely on him.

Ideally, we land a promising youngster to help us out – really, either a DT or a DE would be great. Add in one quality player to this mix, especially a guy who can hold his own on run defense right from the start, and I think I’d be very happy. Target area, but we’re not miserable as it stands.

Well, we have big question marks at this position, to be sure. Certainly, Doug McKenzie has cemented himself right into our lineup as the starter in the middle. John Galvan has been solid, though not spectacular, on the strong side when we have needed him, so he ought to be okay. Longtime reserve and special teams standout D.J. Dennis held up okay when pressed into service – so we expect he will be okay too.

What about Travis Kuykendall – the guy made for this defense? What about Steven Watkins, the centerpiece of our affinity efforts and a long time starter himself? Both are totally up in the air after debilitating injuries this season. I –think- Watkins looks like he will be okay, and he might be suitable for a role as the weak side ‘backer. Kuykendall is the total unknown – he ends the season with the clock still sitting at 41 weeks following ACL surgery, so anything goes there.

If Kuykendall comes back as a shell of his former self and a non-factor, we have three starters (including Watkins) who should be okay, though both outside guys will have injury clouds hovering over them. Guys like Dennis and Wiseman and maybe Shepard are fine as backups, but I really don’t want any of them saddled with full-time starter duty if someone gets hurt – not even at the weak side slot.

So, we will cross our fingers for Kuykendall, a guy who was very much in my long term plan before the blown-out knee. Past that, it’s a possible area for an addition, especially with one of those late first round picks – I have had some luck with linebackers slipping to those slots in MP leagues before.

Well, I already have a long term plan in place here – that is to keep our current young foursome of Padgett, Scanlon, Schwantz, and McCartney in place for the foreseeable future. I remain fairly optimistic about CB Webb and S Vesser also, so we might have six young guys all ready to stick with this team for the long haul, which would be very nice. As much as I like Herman Padgett, he has yet to deliver on the field very much – and his ratings seem to be topping off, to my dismay. However, he stays in my planning, but we’ll keep Dixon Webb in the left side, just incase things don’t work out with Padgett.

We also, as mentioned before, will be looking for a regime change in the affinity leadership in this group, probably. Four of our young guys happen to be early July birthdays, so we might be able to bring aboard someone to build around with them – four instant affinities sounds pretty solid to me. That probably means adios for Henry Birkland, a mentor and position leader, who fits in with the old but not with the new. Stay tuned there.

It’s tough to see us investing here with out draft picks – we have plenty of young guys, and don’t need a crowd. The big question might be whether to re-sign Ferdy Nave, a pretty good player who fits our system awfully well, and a guy I really, really like for some reason.

Overall, where are we?

Right now, here are the players that I envision being part of a “core” of this team going forward – players I expect to be with us next year and for the next several seasons beyond, in whatever capacity (and in what season they will be next year):

QB Brent Sedor, 2
QB Harry Ross, 7
FB Bill Wunderlich, 10
FB Charles Emerson, 6
TE Robert Cooper, 2
WR Danny Napiecek, 4
C Winston Turnbull, 3
C Wendell Lambeau, 3
G Gus Schmit, 3
G Marvin Brandon, 3
T Stanley Tilton, 6
T Jerry Burns, 2
DE Alvin Hall, 10
DE Cornelius Kleinsasser, 8
DE Chuck Linquist, 6
DT Gabe Shah, 4
LB John Galvan, 8
LB Doug McKenzie, 6
CB Herman Padgett, 3
CB Billy Joe Scanlon, 4
CB Dixon Webb, 2
S Jeff McCartney, 3
S Doug Schwantz, 2
S Brett Vesser, 2

We will head into next season thinking about our defensive front and skill position players, probably in that order. We hold draft picks that ought to look like:

1(7) or 1(8)
1(18)
1(21)

If we can perhaps grab a “BPA” type of guy with that top pick (impact player pretty much anywhere) and come back with two need-based pickups later on, that would be fine. With three early picks, we also have the capital to move up to grab a standout player somewhere as well, which may be appetizing. Lots of options ahead, but I am officially happy with a lot more of my roster outlook than at this time last season.

Congratulations

…to Norwich, the #2 seed from our conference who pull off a couple of upsets to take the championship, defeating league power Capital City in a thrilling championship game, on a last-season FG, 16-15.

We wrap up the season, and look ahead to 2010 with real anticipation. Chesapeake signed a few modest free agents down the stretch (all guys with 3 or fewer years of experience_ -- not likely to be anyone of real consequence here, but we’ll have exclusive rights to a handful of guys just in case. Fourth year WR Joseph Crase, late of South Carolina, is probably the most notable of the bunch, and he’s likely to be a longshot to make the team anyway, even with a strong affinity.

Welcome to the 2010 Season!

Well, we have one retirement from Chesapeake – and it’s a non-impact player, G Joseph Shaffer. We signed him three seasons ago, he gut hurt badly midyear in 2007, spent two seasons on IR for us, and now has retired. Probably the most notable thing about him was that he caused us to actually realize a “balloon” payment year from his original FA contract – we signed him to two cheap years followed with some real money… and due to his long-term injury, we couldn’t cut him as we had semi-planned. So, we had to hold him through year three (though he did renegotiate most of it away, thankfully).

Anyway – we’re into 2010. When we drafted a rookie QB last year, it clearly marked a sort of “rebuilding.” However, after winning 6 games in a row to get into playoff position, I’m feeling like this team isn’t years and years away from contending – perhaps Brent Sedor (who didn’t play like a rookie last year anyway) will be able to lead us to the postseason right away – a bit ahead of schedule?

I have already profiled each of the position groups in some detail… so we have our basic needs mapped out. Generally speaking, I’m pretty happy with where we are along the OL and in the defensive secondary… my main focus for this offseason is likely to be the skill positions and the defensive front. We don’t yet know how LB Travis Kuykendall or DT Eugene Bradham are going to look once their long term injuries are resolved – we basically have to assume that they are non-contributors this year (except from a cap perspective, where both guys will make some dent). My honest guess is that Bradham will never play again, and that Kuykendall returns at a depleted state – so basically those jobs are open to be filled.

In the rookie draft, we hold picks at #7, #18, and #20 – and we will consider those three picks as the primary capital in our ability to build for the future.

Our cap situation isn’t going to be as forgiving as usual – we carry over $7 million in dead cap space – unusual for us, but a function of an active offseason last year that, in large part, netted us QB Brent Sedor and these three first round picks. We sit right now on $10.2 million in cap space – but with the heavy draft, that leaves us with about $3.9m as our maximum free agent offer. I look at our roster – we have 45 players signed already (a good deal more than usual) and the early signs are that this will not be an offseason of massive turnover.

Among our veteran free agents, CB Ferdy Nave will be the guy we watch most closely he is just such a great fit for this team, I am really tempted to retain him if I can. He, too, got his balloon payment last year, and wouldn’t renegotiate for less than about $3m a season, more than I wanted to pay. But, if we can lock him up for another contract, I’d be delighted to – hard hitter, good in bump coverage, and a pretty solid ball hawk – just what we like in our secondary.

DE Miles Kershner was a part-time starter for us last year – a one-dimensional guy who can help stop the run a bit, and who has an affinity with position leader LB Steven Watkins. He’s a guy nobody else is likely to want, and if we need a body again, he could get another ride here for cheap.

Among the restricted young players, we will almost certainly re-sign C Winston Turnbull, C Wendell Lambeau, G Marvin Brandon, CB Dixon Webb, and S Brent Vesser. My guess is that we’ll spend about $4m or so on those guys, since several had plenty of playing time already, driving up their prices. So, it looks to me like any space we will have for actual brand new signings, or even signing a guy like CB Nave, will have to come from renegotiations.

DE Alvin Hall is our highest paid player, and he isn’t likely to take a big pay cut. We will probably be able to shave down a few other guys, but I don’t see $5m becoming magically and painlessly available – so I don’t think I’ll be looking to add lots of old free agents, unless they are at immediate need positions.

An initial look at the potential FA market suggests that we won’t be missing out on too much. There are going to be, it seems, a few very solid linebackers on the market – but I think that with Doug McKenzie from last year’s FA class, we have a pretty solid investment there already.

I'm continuing to follow your dynasty Quicksand. Can't wait to see how you retool your team. Good luck in the draft.

Thanks, glad you are enjoying. Going into this offseason, I am on a bit of a fence regarding how much detail to offer in this career thread. I'm still getting a fair number of views, both here and at the FOBL/FOFL website itself -- meaning that I'm likely having many of my league rivals follow along, at least to some degree.

I look back, and feel like I have all but tipped my hand regarding draft strategy for the cocming year -- unless I have created a pretty extensive smokescreen, someone would be fairly sacure knowing I'd pass on even a star CB. S, or OL with my top pick(s)... and I don't know if that might cause us soem harm at some point.

Regardless, the FOFL is amidst some squabbling over rules (a staff hiring system) and it might be a few days until we get to see the rookie class. By then, maybe I'll have a solid idea how much to talk about here. I'd really enjoy posting here details like "This DT looks exactly right for us, and we really hope he lands at #7..." but I can't see how that does anything but hurt the team.

Stay tuned...
