Kabanov sent back, Combs recalled

November 26th 2010 - The Kansas City Coyotes have sent back 18-years-old winger Kirill Kabanov to the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL. The russian forward made a good impression on the team's staff, scoring a goal and adding two assists in 7 games while keeping an excellent +5 record. GM Nicolas Fillion commented on the move that the team felt Kabanov was still very young and time in the minors would be beneficial for his development; the team has no interest in rushing him.

The Coyotes called up forward Jack Combs. In 9 games since being sent down, Combs had scored 4 goals and 4 assists for 8 points. Combs will replace Keith Tkachuk in the lineup for the next two games as the veteran was suspended for clipping Brad Boyes. Brett Sterling will take Kabanov's spot on the left wing of Rob Schremp and Evgeni Artyukhin.

November 21st 2010: Kansas City vs. Calgary, 4-3S W, (Schremp 5-6, Kabanov 1), Mason [W] (40/43)

Are things looking up in December?

Rob Schremp scored 11 points in 12 games in November

December 1st 2010 - The Kansas City Coyotes ended the month of November with the worst record in the National Hockey League, winning only 7 of their 23 games played so far. Yet, there seems to be more optimism going around the team ever since coach Kevin Dineen's demand for more hard work. The team is now working harder and with a bit more opportunism and awareness, the Coyotes could go on a winning streak.

Rob Schremp was the November segment winner of the Sprint Cup. In 12 games, the Canadian forward scored 4 goals and 7 assists for 11 points. He beat Anson Carter and Lukas Kaspar in the voting.

Meanwhile, prospect Travis Randell, who was the 31st overall pick in 2009 by the Coyotes, was named QMJHL Player of the Month after scoring 11 goals and 13 assists in 10 games with the Halifax Mooseheads. The 19-years-old, who was ranked number 9 in Hockey's Future Top 50 prospects list, is currently leading QMJHL scoring with 31 goals and 60 points in 25 games.

NHL Offensive Player of the Month: C Olli Jokinen, Chicago Blackhawks (14-8-18-26)
NHL Defensive Player of the Month: D Mark Streit, Buffalo Sabres (16-3-8-11)
NHL Rookie of the Month: C Lars Eller, St. Louis Blues (13-9-7-16)
NHL Goals Leader: 22 - LW Ilya Kovalchuk, Chicago Blackhawks
NHL Assists Leader: 27 - C Olli Jokinen, Chicago Blackhawks
NHL Points Leader: 44 - LW Ilya Kovalchuk, Chicago Blackhawks
NHL Defenseman Points Leader: 19 - D Jay Bouwmeester, Florida Panthers
NHL Rookie Points Leader: 24 - C Lars Eller, St. Louis Blues

Schremp frustrated

December 10th 2010 - The Kansas City Coyotes have not won a single game in the last 8 outings, and the team's first centre and top scorer Rob Schremp has grown tired of the situation. The Syracuse native has apparently met with general manager Nicolas Fillion because he wanted to know where the team was headed. Schremp, whom at 24-years-old is on the final year of his contract, is said to be unhappy with the situation in Kansas City and would be willing to get traded.

"At this point in time, we have no interest in discussing trades about Rob Schremp. He is a key player on our current roster, and we hope that he remains a key player in the future. Of course, we want our players to be happy so we don't like these kind of stories, but it comes with the team's lack of success." said GM Fillion.

In 28 games this season, Schremp has scored 9 goals and 15 assists, keeping an even plus-minus record. He is the second player to reportedly ask for a trade this season after Lepistö, who was quiclky traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Columbus Blue Jackets, Nashville Predators, St. Louis Blues and Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly interested in acquiring Schremp.

December 1st 2010: Coyotes at vancouver, 4-3 L, (Artyukhin 5, Carter 7, Schremp 7), Denis [L] (37/41)
December 2nd 2010: Kansas City vs. Dallas, 3-0 L, Mason [L] (23/26)

Kulyash-Hedman pair leads to Coyotes win

Victor Hedman was dominant on a defensive pairing with Denis Kulyash

December 14th 2010 - The Kansas City Coyotes dominated the Columbus Blue Jackets for the whole game today while Evgeni Artyukhin put in two goals as the team went on to a 2-1 win, ending a nine-games winless streak. For the first time since their arrival in the NHL, the Coyotes' top defensemen Denis Kulyash and Victor Hedman were playing on the same defensive pair today. This proved to be a very good decision as the pair played a very good game, as did the whole defensive squad, limiting the Jackets to 25 shots on goal.

December 12th 2010: Kansas City vs. Buffalo, 3-2 L, (Kaspar 8, Kulyash 3), Mason [L] (29/32)
December 14th 2010: Coyotes at Columbus, 2-1 W, (Artyukhin 7-8), Mason [W] (24/25)

Tkachuk and Schremp lead the way to amazing comeback

December 16th 2010 - Celebrating the birthday of their General Manager, things couldn't have started so poorly for the Kansas City Coyotes. Less than eleven minutes into the first period, the Flyers had already put four goals past goaltender Chris Mason in eight shots, taking an early 4-1 lead. Rob Schremp cut the lead to 4-2 midway into the second period before Tkachuk made it 4-3 after a few minutes. Then, Schremp and Tkachuk both scored their second goals of the game to start the third period, giving the Coyotes a 5-4 lead. Kaspar completed the score as the Coyotes came back from a 4-1 deficit to win the game 6-4. Marc Denis, who came in relief for Mason after the fourth goal, blocked all 26 shots he faced. Denis Kulyash had three assists in the win.

December 16th 2010: Coyotes at Philadelphia, 6-4 W, (Carter 9, Schremp 10-11, Tkachuk 13-14, Kaspar 9), Mason (4/8) & Denis [W] (26/26)

Danish goaltender causes surprise in group stage

January 3rd 2010 - Ulrik Bork, the seventeen years old backup to Frédéric Piché with the Acadie-Bathurst Titan of the QMJHL, has been a force for the Danish U20 team in the group stage of the World Junior Championships, leading the way to Denmark's first presence in the preliminary playoffs round. If you take out of consideration the game against Canada where he was pulled out after allowing four goals, Bork only allowed six goals on eighty shots, earning wins against Finland, Latvia and Czech Republic.

On the other hand, Czech Republic, Germany and the USA will all play in the relegation round. The US had a particularly difficult tournament, losing to Germany and finishing with only two ties in four games. The Czech team lost all four games, scoring only five goals. Latvia will also play in the relegation round. Both with perfect records, Canada and Russia will recieve byes in the preliminary round.

Denis injured, Pavelec called up

January 5th 2011 - After suffering a groin strain early in the Coyotes' 4-1 loss to the Dallas Stars, Marc Denis has been added to the injured reserve. He is expected to miss one to two weeks of action.

Ondrej Pavelec was recalled from the Rampage. In 25 games this season, the 23-years-old Czech had 10 wins, a 3.11 goals against average and a 90.3% save percentage. He also registered a shutout. He is expected to start one of the back-to-back games in the LA area, either against the Ducks on the 6th or the Kings on the 7th.

Switzerland and Sweden pass, Americans and Czechs fall apart

January 6th 2011 - Loïc Bucher scored the game-winning overtime goal for Switzerland as they beat Denmark 3-2 in the first preliminary playoffs game while Magnus Svensson-Pääjärvi scored the game winning goal in a 4-2 win by Sweden. The relegation of USA and Czech Republic has taken the front of stage to these victories though. USNDP coach Joe clarke called this tournament a disgrace, but there has been a lot of talk about the politics that led to some notable omissions on the roster, including forwards Drew Shore and Steve Quailer as well as defensemen Christopher Duncan and Bjorn Krupp.

Ukraine and Slovenia, who won the division 1 tournament, will replace USA and Czech Republic next year.

Schremp signs new deal

January 10th 2011 - After much speculation on his future, centre Rob Schremp has decided to end rumours and sign a two years extension with the Kansas City Coyotes. Reports had come out in the last few weeks about his questionning of the direction the team was taking. Schremp will earn a bit less than four millions per year for the next two seasons and the deal includes a no-trade clause.

In 32 games this season, the Syracuse native has scored 12 goals and 30 points. He is currently out with an injury but is expected back in a few days.

Yes, I wish I could take control of them in the WJC so that they wouldn't fall apart like this. I don't expect them to be back in the main tournament soon...

January 13th 2011 - Rob Schremp will be back in the lineup for tonight's game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Schremp hasn't played in almost a month after being sidelined with a hip injury. In his last two games before this event, he had scored 3 goals and 3 assists for 6 points.

Blake Comeau has been placed on waivers to make place for Schremp's return and will be sent down to San Antonio. This move confirms that centre Vitaly Karamnov will stay in the lineup for the time being. The 21-years-old russian has scored 5 points in 12 games since his callup. Comeau had no points in 22 games this year.

Comeau on re-entry waivers

January 15th 2011 - Blake Comeau has cleared waivers, but he will stay in Kansas City. Although he had originally been sent down to San Antonio, the forward will hit re-entry waivers and stay in Kansas City if not claimed. Forward Jack Combs suffered a neck injury that will have him sidelined for two weeks and Comeau will therefore stay up with the Coyotes for the time being. Combs has been added to the injured reserve.

I'm going to let them a year or two to try and get back, and if they don't I might just do that. They've got a few nice kids coming up, so they might be good enough to make it.

Schremp out again

January 24th 2011 - After playing only 7 games since coming back from an injury, Rob Schremp will once again miss at least 3 weeks of action. The young canadian forward suffered a rotator cuff strain in today's 4-2 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks. Schremp was still on his way to take back his spot in the lineup, playing around 10 minutes a game since returning. He had scored two assists since coming back. Back in the lineup from his groin injury, Taylor Pyatt will replace him. The Coyotes have lost their last 5 games.

Meanwhile, after some tough times in San Antonio where he had only scored a goal and an assist in his last 8 games, Kirill Kabanov has been sent down to the ECHL's Cincinnati Cyclones. The speedy 18-years-old russian had 11 goals and 6 assists in 36 games with San Antonio.

January confirms bottom of the barrel for Coyotes

February 1st 2011 - As we have gotten used to, there were some ups and downs during the month of January. Most of the team played solid hockey and have finally been able to play consistently, but there was once again a dysmal 5-losses streak in the middle of the month that costs the team so much in the standings. The difficulty of goaltender Marc Denis to come back into full form after his injury. as well as Rob Schremp's constant absence, are also worrying.

Denis Kulyash was the Sprint Cup winner for January with 5 goals and 3 assists in 16 games, while keeping a +5 record. He beat Matthew Lombardi and Chris Mason in the voting process.

Mason and Lundmark traded

February 8th 2011
- In a surprise move heading to the All-Star Game in Atlanta, the Kansas City Coyotes have traded goaltender Chris Mason to the New York Islanders. In return, the Coyotes recieve prospect defenseman Aaron Ness. Minor league defenseman Chris Summers will also be headed to Long Island. The move can be seen as a surprise following Mason's recent string of success. It seems like the team will be putting their confidence in Marc Denis and therefore decided to trade Mason at the top of his value. Mason will serve as backup to Rick DiPietro in New York. Ondrej Pavelec was recalled from San Antonio to serve as backup to Marc Denis.

Ness, a diminutive junior defenseman with the Minnesota Golden Gophers of the NCAA, was the Islanders' 40th overall selection in the 2006 NHL Draft. He was ranked 39th overall in Hockey's Future top prospects rankings before the season. In 37 games this season with the Gophers, he has scored 10 goals and 15 assists.

The Coyotes also traded forward Jamie Lundmark to the Florida Panthers. In return for Lundmark, the Coyotes recieve 25 years old winger Stefan Meyer. In 18 games with the Panthers this year, Meyer had scored 1 goal and 4 assists. Jamie Lundmark was on a good streak with the Coyotes with 5 goals and 4 assists in his last 18 games.

Penguins form new dynamic trio

February 10th 2011
- The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired 22-years-old winger Patrick Kane from the Chicago Blackhawks yesterday, and already the new acquisition has made an impact on the right wing of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. In their first game following the trade, the three combined for 10 points in a 10-4 win over the Ottawa Senators. Kane scored a goal and three assists in the win and now has 52 points in 53 games this season. The Blackhawks had to get rid of Kane to fit in under the NHL Salary Cap and Dumont was the best fit as an addition that would help the 3rd place team.

13th in the eastern conference, the Penguins are expected to trade Alex Tanguay before the trade deadline.

TRADE: New York I trades F Mark Parrish to Toronto for rights to F Richard Flett
TRADE: Chicago trades F Patrick Kane to Pittsburgh for F Jean-Pierre Dumont

Fillion and Dineen in danger?

February 19th 2011 - The Kansas City Coyotes haven't won a game since trading goaltender Chris Mason; scoring only twice in return to the 20 goals allowed during that period. GM Nicolas Fillion and head coach Kevin Dineen are at the center of a lot of criticism right now due to that poor sequence.

"You've gotta let the men do their job." said veteran Keith Tkachuk. "This is a young team and they have to grow. Dineen has done a great job implenting his system here and results should come shortly."

"We'll find our way out of it, we just have to work hard and try to finish the year on the right note." said Rob Schremp, who has only scored one point while being a -3 in 11 games since signing a lucrative contract extention.

"We came in with a five year plan. In this day and age, you can't build a team from scratch and hope to become a contender in the first years. I want to bring a constant cup contender here in Kansas City, and you have to be patient and let the team blossom." said GM Nicolas Fillion

A few players could still be traded before the trade deadline. 38-years-old Keith Tkachuk will probably retire at the end of the year and would like to add a Stanley Cup to his great career resume: 1262 games, 561 goals, 564 assists and 1125 points. Anson Carter, P.J. Axelsson and Jay McKee aren't getting any younger and could be interesting trade assets in the next few days before the February 23rd trade deadline.

The last game before the deadline will take place on the 21st against Columbus:

Kaspar - Schremp - Carter
Tkachuk - Lombardi - Pyatt
Axelsson - Kelly - MacMillan
Meyer-Karamnov-Artyukhin

Hedman-Kronwall
Kulyash-Semenov
McKee-Parent

Denis

TRADE: Atlanta trades F Pavol Demitra to Carolina for rights to D Cam Fowler and a 1st round pick

Pavelec falls; Coyotes in goalie trouble

March 23rd 2011 - Ondrej Pavelec suffered a groin injury that should keep him out for the rest of the season in yesterday's game against the Detroit Red Wings. With only one other goaltender under contract, Brett Bennett who showed he was not ready by being lit up in replacement for Pavelec, the Kansas City Coyotes are now in trouble between the pipes.

The next game is tommorow in Kansas City against the Chicago Blackhawks. Both Marc Denis and Ondrej Pavelec will be out of the lineup for that game. The Coyotes have signed goaltender Dustin Butler to a tryout offer and he will serve as backup to Brett Bennett.

March 20th 2011: Coyotes at Edmonton, 3-2OT W, (Semenov 5, Pyatt 10, Kaspar 13), Pavelec [W] (22/24)

Coyotes sign Randell and Haula

The Kansas City Coyotes retained rights to prospects Travis Randell and Erik Haula today by signing them to two-year rookie contracts. Randell finished second in QMJHL scoring this year with 149 points in 61 games with the Halifax Mooseheads; also leading Canada to a WJC gold medal. He was ranked the 9th best drafted prospect in the world prior to the start of the season. Haula played the whole year with fellow Coyotes prospect Mikael Granlund with Ilves Jr in the Finnish Junior League; the move to North America will be benificial for his developement as he will play in against much tougher competition. Granlund should also be signed during the summer.

"He has the work ethics, the talent and the attitude to one day captain an NHL team to a Stanley Cup." said Halifax's coach Cam Russell about Randell when contacted about the news.

Edmonton wins third longest game in league history

Robert Nilsson scored his first goal of the postseason with less than two minutes to go in the fifth overtime period as the Edmonton Oilers tied the Western Conference finals at 1 with a 4-3 win over the Canucks. Nilsson's goal was the 82nd shot on goaltender Roberto Luongo.

The 158:30 of play represents the third longest game in NHL history and the first in modern days. The Detroit Red Wings had beat the Montreal Maroons 1-0 in 176:30 in 1936 while the Toronto Maple Leafs had beat the Boston Bruins 1-0 in 1933. The modern day record was set in 2000 when Keith Primeau scored the game winning goal 152:01 into the Flyers' 2-1 win over Pittsburgh.

Vancouver will take on Toronto

The Vancouver Canucks, with ten players from the 2008-09 edition still in their lineup, will try to win a third straight Stanley Cup by facing the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Finals. A win would make this the sixth time in history and the first since the New York Islanders of 1979 to 1983 who won four straight. The Maple Leafs haven't won a Cup since 1967, but team captain Tomas Kaberle hopes to end this shameful streak.

Greg de Vries, who was the first captain in the history of the Kansas City Coyotes, will suit up for the Canucks. After scoring 8 points in 80 regular season games, he has been held pointless so far in the post season.

Saginaw wins Memorial Cup

The Saginaw Spirit swept all opposition in the Memorial Cup tournament to win the conveted CHL championship against Val d'Or. An unusual situation happened in the Finals after goaltender suffered a rotator cuff strain in the Spirit's third game. With backup goaltender Chris Perugini also injured, the Spirit turned to 18-years old Kristopher Orr, whom despite 39 games last season, had spent the entire year with the Leamington Flyers of the Western Junior B League. Orr blocked 21 of 24 shots and star defenseman Nick Crawford took care of business to eliminate Val d'Or and win the championship.
