The new Sunflower Dead album ("C O M A") is stunning, though perhaps moreso for people that are familiar with their work to date. While it stands alone very well, the evident growth adds value for me. Facemelting, with lyrical value to spare.

Full disclosure: I've gotten to know the singer via social media a bit over the past couple of years. I'm so fucking proud, for them, of how this record turned out.

Played some old Journey and then remembered about Arnel Pineda how well he mimics Steve Perry so listened to "Revelation". I don't know how Arnel does it but he is good, not Steve Perry good but still pretty darn good.

As usual, I am not cutting edge at all, but am in high rotation on a full album that I love. Beck's "Morning Phase" is a mellow masterpiece. Don't care what Kanye thinks. (That last part stands as widely true)

I have never been a Beck fan at all, but I do like his latest album, Colors - almost entirely because it seems like Roger Joseph Manning, Jr and Jason Falkner finally rubbed off on him. Much of the album is pure Jelly-inspired pop goodness.

I just saw Danzig last week. He still puts on a good show, even if his voice is pretty shot, and he looks like Frankenstein's monster these days.

How about, what the hell NO ONE is listening to... here's the story we've all been waiting for, the one that combines music with fake news, bought FB likes, doctored videos, everything but Paul Manafort from what I can tell.

While more complex than most, sadly this isn't far from what happens all over the place these days.

As long as promoters are dumb enough to buy into FB likes as an indication of popularity, well ....

This one kind of reminds me of the old DEVO videos, mining discomfort by twisting the framing of familiar images & themes.

The weird thing is apparently he was actually pretty decent. I guess hoping that the ‘any publicity is good publicity’ theory pans out

Just got my tickets to see them in Philly in March. Can't wait.

May continue my European symphonic metal phase later in the year with Delain.

Weird(ish) thing about this song is that they've flipped into promoting it as "our new single" ... yet they've been close to getting a rare airplay chart appearance in the U.S. from "The Reckoning". (i.e breaking through to #50 to get into the published chart).

While the value of radio airplay in 2018 is somewhat questionable, it's generally better to have it than not have it.

It just feels like a strategic misstep to me,and that's a shame. The world needs more of this stuff, not less.

Adding a few others to the list, but not posting a link tonight, maybe tomorrow.

In Flames - They kicked ass when they opened for Within Temptation last month and have become a steady part of my playlist.

Amorphis - I have been adding more of them to the playlist as I try to learn more about them. They will be opening for Delain when I see them in September and I hate not knowing anything about a group when I go to see them.

Delain - Also in an attempt to learn more leading up to the show. (actually doing my first meet and greet for that show, that should be cool)

Anneke (not looking up the last name so not even trying to spell it out tonight) - She'll be the first opening act at that show and I have less than no idea what to expect. I have done research and she sings with Vuur who I see on the South American part of the tour where she opens for Delain but I have seen no mention of Vuur for the show I am going to, just her name. I have seen anything from symphonic type metal to acoustic when looking her up.

Oh, has anyone seen Kamelot? They will have a show in September also, wondering if it would be worth it to pick up tickets for that one too.

Haven't listened to everything from the new album but all that I've heard (3 songs? 4?) has been pretty solid

The Hu are a Mongolian rock/metal band with a few Youtube clips and an album apparently due this year. Lyrics seem a bit on the 'extreme nationalistic' side, but I can't help but love the shit out of the cinematography, instrumentation (including the traditional Mongolian throat singing), and even the music itself, oddly enough...

I just listen to popular stuff since I Uber. The new Khalid CD is pretty good. Billie Eilish has a few very good songs but several tracks sound like knockoff Lorde b-sides

Has anyone seen The Struts? Not overly impressed by what I have heard from them but will be seeing them as part of the MMRBQ festival next weekend.

Shinedown, Evanescence, The Struts, Joan Jett, Fozzy, The Glorious Sons, Bad Wolves and Siravo.

I've seen Shinedown a couple times, they put on a great show. First time with the others. Heard Evanescence puts on a good show (just think Amy Lee is fake as hell).

Few bands have ever frustrated me more with their set structure than Shinedown. It's as though they can't stand to have any energy or momentum for more than two songs in a row.

I've seen them a couple times but that doesn't stand out to me. Then again, I don't really remember noticing that for anyone I've seen.

I kind of like a decent mix. As an example, when I saw In Flames it was amazing but I was drained by the end of their set. I still had Within Temptation coming up. Realized I was still sitting a few songs into their set, was enjoying it just needed to get that energy back.

Saw Sons of Texas again last night (last time was, I think? last summer), first time as a headliner.

A band couldn't be tighter than they are right now, 5 guys all appearing to be at the top of their game at the same time.

I've seen that happen maybe 3 other times in my life. (Scorpions in '88, A7x around the beginning of the Nightmare tour, 10 Years 2-3 years back) and it's just f'n magical when you see it and know it's happening. Humbling almost.

Had a unique experience before the show too. Hanging outside the venue mostly since two of the three local openers were {cough} uninspiring, what seemed to be just another fan walked up & said "you here for Sons of Texas"? (seemed like an odd question to ask since it's their f'n show, but okay) "Yeah" ... "Don't move, be right back"

Maybe a minute later, he returns ... with the singer in tow. A very cool conversation follows, the gist of it was that he just wanted to thank us for being there to see them, that he knew weeknights could be rough, and that they really appreciated people making that effort.

Been going to shows for 34 years, never had that happen before a show. And damned sure not in this era of the paid "meet and greet".

edit to add: that seemingly random fan (I pieced together later) knows the band well, friend of theirs basically, and had noticed us and a few others outside who were clearly not there primarily to see anyone else.

You read right. From what I read they have some dates where they will be headlining their own show and others in support of Babymetal.

I really am ready for the alien overlords to get here.

(I may not like everything Avatar does but I respect them for being creative. A bit, or more, over the top at times probably but in general I respect their efforts)
